Just got around to watching Bellator from t'other night. Fuck me, wasn't expecting Little Pitbull to KO Diego Nunes that quick. Actually, I didn't expect him to KO him at all really. Thought that would be a close fight. Big win for Patricio. Nunes had never been finished before either, so it's not like he's chinny.

I watched the 5* version of this this morning. I can't speak for the rest of the show but the stuff we got on 5* I really enjoyed.

Max Nunes got well and truly derailed didn't he? Jason Jones is a scary looking fucker. I don't know if it was Jones' trash talk effecting Nunes or what but after a decent start he seemed to kind of freeze and Jones took over. Jones post-fight interview though - "Errrrrrr....Errrrrrr". Jesus.

 

Freakshow vs Newman was a cracking fight. Really enjoyed it. Freakshow looked good, won the striking but Newman came scarily close on a few of those submissions. I don't know how Freakshow escaped that triangle and armbar in the 2nd (I think?). Really good fight. Loved Freakshow's entrance as well with the sword eating and the midget and stuff.

 

Barnaoui vs Warburton was a wild one rounder. Stoppage was way late though. Yeah a lot of the shots didn't look full power but Warburton was already hurt and he wasn't defending for ages. He was done and the ref was just arsing about watching. Even Ken 'that was an early stoppage' Shamrock was saying he didn't know why the ref was letting it continue. Aside from that though, really fun action packed round.

 

Wallhead vs Ellis was a bad decision. All I can think is like Trigg said at the end, the judges scored Ellis the first round for having Wallhead's back for a while. Bollocks though. In a round where Wallhead dropped him twice (didn't he?), cut him and did all the damage, Ellis taking his back and just riding out the clock shouldn't have tricked the judges. That's some goofy scoring. Good fight though.

 

*Ken Shamrock needs to calm the fuck down. What was up with him last night? I can't stand Trigg so for Shamrock to annoy me more than him is some feat, but he did. And I usually haven't minded Ken's commentating in the past. He was a right negative twat last night though. That bit at the end of the show where they ran through their final thoughts on the fights was painful. Ken basically put every result down to the loser being stupid rather than the winner doing well. It does nothing for BAMMA who have to promote these guys in the future, when you have Ken Shamrock the most recognizable face on the show, telling everyone that the winners last night only won because their opponents didn't do "what he would have done." The icing on the cake was his outburst on the Barnaoui-Warburton fight where he was pink faced and outraged that Warburton didn't exploit Barnaoui's ground game, which he said was non-existent - "He (Barnaoui) doesn't even know how to choke, look, it's right there and he doesn't know how to do it." Meanwhile Warburton is in the twilight zone after eating about a thousand punches. Did he miss that? He was calling for Warburton to bust out some BJJ when Warburton was done, out on his feet. He was fucking toast and Shamrock was criticizing him for not pulling a Sakuraba-like from the jaws of death submission. He made the winner and the loser look like idiots.

 

To end on a more positive note, that dark haired BAMMA ring girl is lovely.

Agree 100%, he was fucking painful to listen too.

i spoke the other day of MMA leaving me a little underwhelmed recently by potentially great fights just ending so quickly, and this was another one. It looked like a nothing shot too, i think it just hit Nunes on a sweet spot. He was done.

 

Only other thing of note really on Bellator (which was one of the pooerer shows in a while), was the Justin Wilcox comeback, fuck me!

 

oh, and i was glad to see Vlad get the win

 

WSOF was better, Arlovksi/Kyle had what's best desribed as a hard hitting sparring match, both guys landed some heavy shots. Arlovski's chin seems to be improving with age.

 

Dave Branch looks legit at 185. He's a UFC 'cast off' but the guy looks great these days, one of those physically imposing 185lber's that can strike but if needs be can just grind fuck out of you, great submission defence too. Branch is the kind of guy i don't think anyone would enjoy fighting.

 

Did Rolles take a dive in the Mehman fight? No one gets KO'd that theatrically do they?

 

The Elvis Mutapic situation was really weird, anyone got an opinion on that?

I only watched bits of WSOF, but enjoyed it. Arlovski's chin is weird. Seems on a given night it either absorbs big shots pretty well or you could knock him out with candyfloss. Mike Kyle for all his shortcomings is a devastating puncher and Arlovski held up. I wish there was a way to clone Roy Nelson's chin and stick it on Andrei. He'd have probably been UFC champ up until the Brock Lesnar era, and likely still in the mix now. I still think he'll be back in the UFC one day. Dana's never really taken a pop at him, even when he was fighting for rivals Affliction, EliteXC and Strikeforce. And the Arlovski-UFC split in 2007 was amicable. I think at some point when he's on a little streak, they will give him a call. He won't make any real waves but there are fun fights to make and he's still got some name value. He'd be a good boost to the European cards as well.

 

I was happy to see Vlad win as well. Houston Alexander continues to disappoint though.

Dana's never really taken a pop at him, even when he was fighting for rivals Affliction, EliteXC and Strikeforce.

Dana took the blame for that one amazingly. Said it was the his mistake the way they dealt with Arlovski in 2008 if I recall right.

 

If you look back, the immediate rematch with Sylvia in 2006, the way he was marketed in 2005 alongside Franklin and Hughes as a cornerstone, the company clearly has a soft spot for him. He is very hard to dislike.

 

On the flip side, they could not wait to get rid of Sylvia and the other jobbers from that Heavyweight era.

Arlovski is looking alright these days, i don't think he's as sharp as he was but he's still a very capable heavyweight, and like i said his chin (which was always his biggest knocking point) seems to have improved. Andrei also seems to be over that metal thing where he could come into a fight after being KO'd and being hesitant. After the horrific jaw injury he suffered to Johnson i expected him to be hesitant Saturday but he wasn't.

 

As for Houston Alexander, the guy spends 90% of his fights seemingly mustering up the courage to throw something. When he does he clearly still has frightening power, but he fights like he's terrified. At 41 you're never expecting the guy to live up the hype, but he's been disappointing so many times.

 

Vlad looked good, fighting a hesitant power puncher is always gonna make for a cautious fight but he won all 3 rounds and went old-school Vlad for round 3. I really hope Bellator put him in the upcoming 205lb tournament.

Yeah, surely he'll be in the tournament. It's not like the Bellator roster is heaving with 205ers so they'll need to fill it up and Vlad is coming off a good win.

 

Speaking of chins, I think that's Houston's mental block. He looked like a killer when he came the UFC, until he got put out a few times. Including that KO loss to James Irvin in seconds. I think that's why he's so hesitant now. I don't think he fancies his chin to hold up so he comes in gun-shy.

 

I'd like to see Arlovski back in the UFC. There's so many fresh match ups you can make with him. I'd love to see Arlovski vs Stipe Miocic. Fights with Overeem, Hunt, Mir, Barry would be fun as well. Wouldn't mind a Roy Nelson rematch either actually.

I like Lima again. I like both but I'm hoping Saunders wins, just got a feeling Lima will catch him again. Just seems like whenever things seem to be on track for Saunders he gets stopped. Should be good either way. Might rewatch the first fight actually, I remember it being really good.

I presume you mean Georgia? And it's BAMMA Belle, not ring girl.. Oh and I should be starting to get the prelims on our You Tube channel in the next few days.
