Nonetheless, the idea that communism wasn't desinged, and implemented (however badly) is kinda rubbish.

Yeah, I should have been more clear, and said something more along the lines that 'all successful western societies and beaurocracies have been the product of evolution rather than instantaneous creation'. Communism was certainly designed, yet I believe they weren't able to implement the design and instead what they achieved wasn't as dissimilar to what went before as concrete terms such as 'communism' and 'capitalism' would suggest. Autocratic socialist rule rather than communism, then, which isn't all that different to the autocratic monarchic rule that preceded it.

Then again, I'm of the opinion that communism is it's essence is just a work of nineteenth century utopian fiction (it's theories actually share much in common with More's sixteenth century Utopia), and is unlikely to ever work unless society was started from scratch and people have no expectations/perceptions/conceptions. Which of course will never happen.

However, while it's helpful to bear it in mind to get you through the day, it's important not to use it to ignore the vast social inequalities and injustices that exist within this country.

Again, true, but I tend to take a more passive response to social injustice, in the belief that little will change. There are always people at the top and people at the bottom in life. It's unfair, unjust, unequal, yet I do not see a solution that will be palatable to all society, and thus there will always be those who fight against change, and it will be those currently at the top with the most power.

Let's be thankful that such people as Keir Hardie, John MacLean & James Connolly didn't share such an attitude.

Have you even seen David Starkey on TV mickey? the twat had made a reputation for himself long before his racist comments over the riots.Hardly suprised to see you defending him though mickey.EDITStarkey is also one of the rudest people I have ever seen on QT constantly cutting people off and shouting over them (heck Dimbleby had to tell him to shut up one time) so for him to cry over how he was treated on TV is fucking hilarious.

I don't blame Starkey for lashing out, so one (albeit worded very badly) observation is enough for people to turn on you & declare your career over? Really? Is that how we are in 2011?Scary.

It's how things have been for ever, if you have stupid ignorant opinions the majority of people will think you're a cunt. This really shouldn't come as new news to you mickey.Re Palin not running, I don't see it as particularly positive I have to say. A tea party candidate was about the only thing that'd stop the republicans getting in next term, if they choose a candidate that comes across as less insane you can pretty much guarantee obama's out. Which I can't help but think is a shame.

Without retreading old ground he did make a reasonable point, he just put it badly.

Yeah, but people aren't jumping on him for "one observation" are they? It's because he always acts like a dick and everyone knows it. This was just yet one more example. You said yourself you don't like him - what could that possibly be based on if not an opinion formed on a collective view of all the things you've heard him say?Stop backtracking your bullshit defense of him.

Starkey is the Flaming June of the BBC ;)I quite like it when he's on QT as often his historian's perspective on modern politics can be enlightening; however he's definitely started acting more of a dick as his fame has increased. He enjoys being controversial I guess.

Yeah, he said gangsta culture was a black thing, and therefore kids being gangsta's where being black, whereas blacks not involved in crime were being white.People are always gonna think you're an ignorant racist cunt for things like that.
