  1. So the Jake/DiBiase feud started in May 89 and culminated, what, April 1990?

    Now THAT's some forward planning!

A strange as it may seem now, back in the day booking was done with a long term goal in mind. After Wrestlemania IV it was said thet Vince new the main event for Wrestlemania V would be Savage vs Hogan, and everything done was to build up to that. These days everything appears to be done on the fly, Vince changes his mind at the drop of a hat, and there appears to be little, if any long term plans.

  2. So long as they continue to keep producing decent players ( did you see Gurney and Chisnall at the Lakeside ? ) then they'll continue to be around. I can't name a top player who didn't come through the BDO.

The BDO will be around for a long time to come. However, any decent player will end up switching to the PDC, the BDO will end up producing some more talent, they will join the PDC, and it will all continue again. Chisnall looked the absolute business in the BDO Worlds, though I didn't care for Gurney in the slightest.

  3. Has the Undertake ever faced Chris Jericho in a singles match?, I cannot think of one even on house shows during the 1999 - 2002 period before the draft as they were pretty much heels and faces at similar times and then after the draft jericho left when interbrand matches became the norm. In all honesty its a weird Dream Match for me

The above website will be able to help you.

  4. Has John Zandig sold all or part of CZW to someone, just asking as in the last few videos and even last night watching The Wrestler I noticed that they now have a decent little rampway and video screens. Also the presentation quality seems a lot better.

So has Zandig either a) won the state lotto. or b) got an investor.

For some reason the guy who owned XPW - Rob Black seems to be creeping into my thinking about it.

I haven't watched the promotion for a bit, but from when I used to frequent the CZWfans message board, I am sure I remember something about D.J.Hyde investing into the company. It would certainly explain why he used to get pushed so heavily.

  5. Anderson Silva for me, 3 wins and all inside the distance (even if one was the Cote fight). To be honest I find it pretty ludicrous that Miguel Torres hasn't made the shortlist (especially as you have Thiago Silva )as 3 fights for the year, and he finished everyone he faced, and one of those was the incredible fight against Maeda. Had GSP finished Fitch, I may well have gone for him over Silva, but it is a pretty sorry state of affairs if Lesnar wins this.

  6. Mab got my vote. Nowhere near as bad as he was last year, but still the odd idiotic comment such as about the Luchadores on the Paul O'Grady show, and his posts in the Pregnancy thread (I think that is where they were) that stick clearly in my mind, and the absence of people such as Roger, nateandrews, Mr Lawrence, Mr Mojo Rising in this category means it was him for me.

  7. Jon Koppenhaver vs Jared Rollins

    Clay Guida vs Roger Huerta

    Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva

    Frank Shamrock vs Cung Le

    Miguel Torres vs Yoshihiro Maeda

    Urijah Faber vs Jens Pulver

    Eddie Alvarez vs Joachim Hansen

    Eddie Alvarez vs Tatsuya Kawajiri

Note the first 3 took place the end of last year, but are eligible for the Observer's 2008 Awards so presumed they would be eligible here aswell.

  8. Hi there, fantastic thread and you guys have helped me before and i would like your help again please. Having just purchased the first volume of Real In Memphis from Simania I popped it in last night and was surprised at the various different bits of footage on the discs. Can someone please provide me with a listing for all the volumes and some background to the dvd set if at all possible.

    M2K Comp #10 - The War On Co-edism

Wataru Inoue v The American Dragon (NJ 6/10/02) Ah, some clever chappy decided to give these two an eight minute wrestling match. Whoo-hoo! It's all choppy-choppy and bitchy-bitchy as you'd expect. Ohtani/Benoit comparisons for both men respectively are explicit.

Jumbo Tsuruta v Toshiaki Kawada (All Japan, 1991) Arguably the two best Japanese professional wrestlers ever tie it up in singles. Jumbo looked as though he hadn't been layed for a couple of weeks and was intent on smacking as much shit as possible out of young Tosh. Great teacher v pupil stuff in the All Japan idiom.

Shoichi Ichimiya defends his 24/7 Hardcore Title against hot babes, dogs, disgruntled restaurant owners.....(DDT, 12/02)

Ian Rotten v Jimmy Jacobs (IWA Mid South, 4/03) More fun from FAT! Finlay, this time guiding the fuzzy booted young Jacobs through a super little wrasslin' match. Ian is one of the most underrated wrestlers on the scene at present.

Pierroth Jr/Violencia/Blue Panther v Gran Markus Jr/Apolo Dantes/El Satanico (EMLL, 1/03) My favourite match yet from the wickedly bufoonish Markus-Boriquas fued. Panther and Satanico beat the shit out of each other like the MEN that they are, while Dantes and Violencia complete a fine supporting cast. Mmmmmmmm, Arena Colliseo.

Toshiaki Kawada v Genichiro Tenryu (All Japan 10/00) Argghhhh!!!!! I'm watching this for the third or forth time and I'm still cringing at the ferociously stiff blows unleashed in this match. Extremely well laid out match that builds sublimely (no boring repetitious headdrops are necessary here), punctuated throughout by the stiffest wrestling on the planet. This COULD be the match of the century so far.

La Galactica v Jaguar Yokota (AJW) This zany fan-cam is the follow up to their more famous hair match and is full of hate. Galactica is a great heel and Jaguar is brings her normal brand of firm assed, perky bosomed professional wrestling (Matron!). All capped off by some funky interference from the legendary Monster Ripper.

Young David v Fit Finlay (England, very early 80's) Lovely stiff-as-fuck technical wrestling stuff from these two skinny kids. Finlay's greatness is obvious even at this stage of his career and pre-roids Davey Boy could really GO. Messrs Galbraith and Kennedy will get a kick out of the latest scores as well.

KAORU/Toshiyo Yamada v Etsuko Mita/Mima Shimoda (GAEA, 4/99) One of those crazy Memphis-meets-ECW brawls that GAEA does so well. Shimoda excels in this environment, Yamada is superb, Mita stomps ass and KAORU does her lesbian Sabu schtick. Did I mention that Chris Coey hates this match?

Earl 'The Pearl' Strickland gives a masterclass in heel psychology and how the turn a crowd against you. The best heel in America behind Todd Morton.

Stan Lane/Bobby Eaton v Tracy Smothers/Steve Armstrong (NWA, 1990) Forgotten TV match between two great tag teams who would go on to have a bona-fide classic at the Great American Bash later in the year. All the greatness of MX-Southern Boys you expect compressed into a sub-ten minute match.

Kiyoshi Tamura v Tsyoshi Kousaka (RINGS, 27/6/98) Pretty much the last word in pretend MMA matches. Oodles of tricked out shooty matwork and maximum usage of the points system makes for one heck of a match. Imagine the mid-point between Maeda-Fujinami '86 and the better Takada stuff.

Electroshock/Chessman v El Torero/Oscar Sevilla (AAA, 1/03) The sleazey, zany, low-budget AAA version of the ECW Gangtas Paradise tag with a bunch of angles crashing together like semen on Kristi Myst's face. Worth checking out for mucho MILF malevolence from Lady Apache and Esther Moreno if nothing else.

Shiro Koshinaka v Genichiro Tenryu (World Japan, 3/5/03) This just rocks with fun. Tenryu is joyfully mean and miserable as the perfect foil to Koshinaka's assbumping nuttiness. Not to hammer home rhetoric or anything, but if you don't like this match, you hate professional wrestling.

Tom Pritchard/Jimmy Delray v Dirty White Boy/Tracy Smothers (SMW, 9/95) Yeah, the best match from possibly the best US indy show of the 1990's and maybe the best tag match in the history of wrasslin's rootinest, tootinest, pollutinest promotion. Dr Tom's blade job fucks your mother and blows it's load on your aunt's face.

Tamon Honda v Kenta Kobashi (NOAH, 13/4/03) Honda is this year's suprise package. His unlikely Taue-meets-Dr Cerebro act has turned him from laughing stock into one of the best wrestlers in the world (that is unless your name is Mrs Angle). The match is full of funky matwork, cool suplexes and great drama. Both men's best performance of the year and beats the living piss out of Misawa-Kobashi.

Ted Dibiase v Jim Duggan (Cage, Mid South) 'Best Dressed' angle....Dibiase the worker......tuxedos.......you know the rest.

Takeshi Rikioh/Takeshi Morishima/Diasuke Ikeda v Akitoshi Saito/Jun Akiyama/Jun Izumida (NOAH 23/3/03) This match clubbers it's way into contention for Match of the Year. Everyone is up for it and firing on all cylanders, even Izumida and especially Morishima. This has everything you could want from a six-man tag.

Johnny Smith v George Hines (All Japan, 4/5/03) 70's style matfest-o-rama as Johnny Smith takes the third Fantastic through a hell of an engaging contest. Tremendous stuff as usual from another of the world's most underrated wrestlers.

Michael Todd Stratton v Ian Rotten (IWA Mid South, 18/4/03) Todd is the king of the redneck inciting rednecks, fighting with ringrats and screaming at the fans. Great brawl, with plenty of blood and hatred; think of a modern Lawler-Dundee with more cussing. The ever charming Steve Stone turns the air blue on commentary.

Billy Joe Travis v Jerry Lawler (Memphis, 7/02) Terry Funk no shows so they brought in Travis for this MSC main event - and it rocks. Double juice brawl all over with smatterings of that classic Memphis schtick we all love. The last significant match of Travis' life, as he tragically passed away a few months later. Great pre-match mic work here as well.

GENTARO v Takashi Sasaki (DDT, 19/3/03) Clash of tag team partners forced into battle with each other by the evil DDT powers-that-be. It helps that these two guys are the best workers in the promotion too; Sasaki operates as a kind of babyface SUWA, while GENTARO is 'the Japanese Marty Jannetty' (Fadda~~~~~). Neat match.

Masa Fuchi v Danny Kroffat (All Japan, 1991) Fun little match, especially for fans of Fuchi who is at his dickish best.

Tatsumi Fujinami v Chavo Guerrero (Early 80's) A lot of people forget that Fujinami was one of the great pioneers of junior heavyweight wrestling and they er....shouldn't. Chavo Sr could go back then too. Nice match with some funky stuff from both men. I do believe the first match on one of my comps to feature a Vince McMahon cameo.

  9. Also whilst browsing Ebay I came across someone selling a wrestling dvd which claims it has the footage of Slaughter and Kernodle vs Steamboat and Youngblood in a cage and its the only known full copy of the footage... sounds too good to be true to me but is it possible?

Info taken from a post of Bix's over at DVDVR. The story was that Arn Anderson accidentally taped over a copy of Jim Nelson's copy of the Slaughter & Kernodle vs Steamboat & Youngblood Final Conflict. However, later Kernodle himself came forward with his copy of the match which was a dub of Nelson's and everyone was able to see it in full. I am pretty sure I have a copy of the disc myself somewhere.

  10. When did Norman Smiley grapple in the WWE?

04.21.03 Atlanta, GA Mark Jindrak bt Norman Smiley

04.22.03 Nashville, TN Ernest Miller bt Norman Smiley

06.09.03 Miami, FL Rico bt Norman Smiley

06.21.04 Miami, FL Chuck Palumbo bt Norman Smiley

11.19.07 Fort Lauderdale, FL Vladimir Kozlov bt Norman Smiley

  11. Which wrestlers have been in WWE WCW ECW (original version) and TNA it got to be a short list

    Christopher Daniels

    Lenny Lane

    Erik Watts

    Wolfie D

    Norman Smiley

have all wrestled at least one match in all four of the promotions.

  12. The tournament has really picked up in the knock out stages, although I am hugely disappointed that Whitlock didn't capitalise on his incredible start against Taylor and knock him out. I am rooting for King and Jenkins in the Semis, with Jenkins to (hopefully) take the final.

I am glad that the BDO players have put in some good performances, though am getting a tad fed up with the constant talk of players moving over to the PDC in January. On a similar note, I have enjoyed Chris Mason's commentary far more than Alan Warriner-Little, as Warriner comes over as a Sid Waddell wannabe, and is a tad annoying constantly repeating his same phrases (player requires 99 "if he hits this I'll stick a flake in it for you!"). There was also a nice bit of footage of John Lowe's first ever televised 9 darter against Keith Deller back in 1984, which he got

  13. Can someone explain to me what a 9 dart shoot out entails ? Andy Hamilton and Alan Tabern are going through one tomorrow to get an easy second round game against Phil Taylor.

Each player throws 9 darts, highest score progresses through to the next round.

  14. The first set of matches have been confirmed for next Saturday.

    Afternoon Session ( 12pm - 5pm )

    Adrian Lewis vs. Denis Ovens*

We met Denis Ovens at the Matchplay in Blackpool last year and he was a really nice guy, had a chat with us and signed our programmes. Also met Eric Bristow, sadly the man who was the greatest player in the 80s was nothing sort of a rude cunt to us.

  15. Yup. Robert Thornton was the only guy who put up something resembling a fight against him.

Aye, Thornton averaged around 103 in his semi against Taylor, whilst the Power averaged 113! Had he checked out his 130+ outshot in his final leg then he would have broken the highest recorded 3 dart average in tournament play (which was 114. something).

I am looking forward to the Grand Slam and hope some of the BDO boys put up a better showing than last year, when only Nixon seemed to play well, and even he didn't get out of the group stages, and Webster only played well in his third group match after he was already eliminated. I haven't seen much BDO Darts this year, but if De Ruiter is as bad here as he was during the Worlds he could get annihilated.

I also wish that Adams would play in this (at least for one year). Yes we know he is BDO through and through, but I can't understand why he doesn't want to prove himself against the best players in the world, hell, if he wins it is then even more kudos for his BDO.

  16. And can I have some opinion on what are some of the best shoot interviews to view?

The first Jim Cornett shoot that he did with RF was tremendous and is my favourite, although you cant go wrong with any Cornette (I have at least 15, and that doesn't include when he was doing the interviewing for ROH like with the Bruno and Konan ones). The Bill Watts shoot (also RF) would rank second, and the Lanny Poffo shoot comes in third. Of the newer ones I would recommend any Jamie Dundee stuff.
