  1. Dillikid, your sig is unnecessarily big and annoying. Can you change it?

You can turn signatures off just by going into your settings. Its what I do, as I dont fancy spending time scrolling past pointless pictures and links to things I have no intention of ever visiting.

  2. It should also be pointed out that the scheduled main event for this card was meant to be Kevin Randleman vs Pedro Rizzo. The fight never took place as Randleman slipped on the concrete backstage, knocking himself out and having to be taken to hospital. No mention of any of this is made on the DVD, and the disc is edited as if the fight was never scheduled to take place in the first place.

 WTF never heard about that before

It is only when I went back and read about the show in an old Observer that I became aware of this. I was just wondering what on earth Tedd Williams vs Steve Judson was doing main eventing a UFC show (Adams/Freeman was a prelim fight that aired last on the DVD), and the Randleman injury was the reason for it. As it turns out they ended up having the Randleman/Rizzo fight at UFC 26.

  3. Here are the final few notes on UFC 24 that I finished watching a few days back.

Shonie Carter/Brad Gumm - perhaps the most notable thing in this fight was the fact that Dan Severn was the official. Carter goes by the nickname of 'Hurricane' rather than Mr International. The fight is nothing special; a couple of nice throws by Shonie, one good exchange in the second and that was pretty much it. Carter gets the judges decision in his UFC debut.

Tedd Williams/Steve Judson - Williams the wrestler looked as though he didnt have a clue as Judson came out throwing strong. However, he appeared to be playing possum, as when Judson started to gas, Williams then let his hands go and KO'd Judson (although this KO wasnt as bad as the one if suffered at the hands of Brad Kohler).

Scott Adams/Ian Freeman - I am thinking Freeman is the first Brit to fight in the Octagon here. They heavily hype Adams as a leg lock specialist (he supposedly made Tito tap 30 times in a row), and he doesnt disappoint. He takes Freeman down immedialely and goes for all sorts of leg lock variations (kneebars, heel hooks, achilles holds, ankle locks). Freeman defended them well until eventually tapping, and Adams looked impressive in his victory.

All in all, search out Tiki/Cook and maybe the Pulver fight but that is it. Against better judgement I am going to try and watch UFC 25 tonight.

  4. ...John Polakowski

and no mention of John Polakowski can go by without mentioning his war with Olaf Alfonso from WEC 9. An incredible fight, that is my all time favourite. I dont know if this is online anywhere (it wasnt on youtube when I looked), but if you can track down a copy you wont be disappointed.

I really need to try and source a copy of TUF 8 from somewhere, as it is the one season I havent seen (with the exception of the Finale).

that's a fight that was all over the internet when it happened. Seemed to disappear from existence then though :( wish i'd archived all the old shit i used to download (i do now).

The WEC needs to get its act together with DVD's.

I think a lot of the WEC shows aired on HDNet Fights at some point in the US. The only one that I think may have gotten an official release is WEC 6 'Return of a Legend' which is main evented by Frank Shamrock vs Bryan Pardoe.

The problem with the WEC that aired on HDNet was that they didn't always air the complete shows. WEC 12 for example, they only showed 4 fights, and the same for WEC 18 (although they aired a hell of a short fight between Justin Levens and Scott Smith). Some of the early shows are not even in circulation amongst DVD traders (1-3 and 25-27, although the latter shows aired in the first season of Wrekcage). When you look at some of the names on the early WEC shows such as Leben, Swick, Parisyan, Vera, Carter, Melendez, Faber etc. you would think it would be well worth the WEC investing a bit of time and releasing these shows, even if it was in box sets of 5 shows at a time.

  6. Cheers for the info regarding UFC 25. As a completist I am going to make time to watch it, but as I didnt care for the previous two Japan cards I wasnt looking forward to this one as it is, so it might be a case of a fight here, a fight there.

I havent seen any Tito from the time frame you specified (doesnt he have a dull 5 rounder against Matyushenko?), although I thought he looked great in his prior fights when he was getting started such as against Bohlander and Mezger II, plus the one against Frank until his cardio let him down.

  7. i put UFC 25 on last night and couldn't believe that Minowaman was on the card, i never knew he fought in the UFC.

This ones next on my UFC viewing as I continue to make my way through the early shows that I didnt see first time around. I have seen the Tito/Wanderlei fight before (on a Wanderlei career comp), but the Japan shows in the past I have found a chore to get through.

  8. Manhoef v Cyborg from Cage Rage is always a classic.

Forgot that one. What a wild brawl that was.

I was looking at the UFC 21-29 shows and bar seeing them for completeness, I really didn't feel they would be worth watching.

It was certainly a weak run of shows. There's still some stuff worth seeing though just maybe not whole shows. The Frank Shamrock-Tito Ortiz fight is obviously the one that stands out most from these events.

I maintain what I said previously about UFC 21 being a hidden gem of a show. From 22 its all about Shamrock/Ortiz and a brutal KO in the Kohler/Judson fight, 23 is one to give a miss to, and having just finished watching the show I would say the same about 24 (just search out Tiki/Cook, and maybe the early Pulver fight).

  9. I have started watching UFC 24 'First Defence', and bar one fight it is nothing great so far.

Jens Pulver vs David Velasquez opens the disc and Pulver enters the cage wearing wrestling boots. Its pretty much total dominance from the future Lil Evil who uses his superior boxing skills to earn an eventual 2nd round TKO. This was followed by the best fight on the card (of what I have so far watched) where Tiki (and even back then he had that strange dyed goatee) faced Bob Cook. Tiki was dominating this one standing and putting the hurt on Crazy Bob, that is until Cook finally got the fight to the ground and from there quickly forced the tap. Fabiano Iha vs Dane Menne was nothing memorable, and that was followed by Lance Gibson Sr vs Jermaine Andre. Andre was a Muay Thai practioner and actually showed some fairly decent ground defence in order to escape from a couple of submissions (an armbar especially looked as though it would be the end) from the Pankaration fighter Gibson. The ending was a nasty KO after a knee to the chin of Andre, that sees him just fall face first to the canvas and he then gets worked on by the medical staff after for a bit. They then aired one of the prelims which was the UFC debut of Shonie 'Hurricane' Carter against Brad Gumm, and Carter at this point had already had almost 35 MMA fights. It should be noted that Carter fights this match in attire similar to Zach Ryder wears. I will post about the rest of the show when I have finished up watching it.

  10. Hackney is a total fucking legend. As is Harold Howard. He was a fucking king.

Dont know how many are aware but Hackney actually tried out for Season Four ('The Comeback') of TUF, but they didnt consider him.

My lasting memory of the mulleted Howard was from his pre-fight video, where he is shown opening up sandbags due to the power of his punches. I remember (at the time) thinking he was one tough fucker.

  11. Distinct lack of Don Frye vs Thomas "Winner of 200 bare knuckle fights on the island, and Pakua Chan exponent" Ramirez from UFC VIII there. Same for Fred Ettish showing the world how it should be done in UFC II.

For some reason the moustached wonder that is Fred Ettish had slipped from my mind. I suppose if you have a spare 7 seconds in your life you could check out the Predator/Ramirez fight.

  12. I'm downloading UFC 1 and I'm gonna be working through the shows.

Is there any shows and fights in particular I should be looking out for.

Must see fights from the first 20 shows:

UFC 5 Ken Shamrock vs Royce Gracie (you need to sit through this for all the wrong reasons!)

UFC 6 Tank Abbott vs Oleg Taktarov

UFC 9 Amaury Bitetti vs Don Frye

UFC 9 Dan Severn vs Ken Shamrock (another you need to sit through for all the wrong reasons)

UFC 14 Mark Coleman vs Maurice Smith

UFC 15 Vitor Belfort vs Randy Couture

UFC 17 Dan Henderson vs Carlos Newton

UFC 18 Bas Rutten vs Tsuyoshi Kohsaka

Good fights, nasty finishes, or stuff you should just watch

UFC 1 Teila Tuli vs Gerard Gordeau (brutal kick to the face in this one)

UFC 2 Patrick Smith vs Scott Morris (vicious finish)

UFC 4 Melton Bowen vs Steve Jennum

UFC 6 Tank Abbott vs John Matua (Tank lives off this fight for the next 15 years)

UFC 8 Gary Goodridge vs Paul Herrara (vicious finish)

UFC 10 Don Frye vs Mark Coleman

UFC 11 Tank Abbott vs Scott Ferrozzo

UFC 12 The debut of Vitor Belfort

UFC 16 Mikey Burnett vs Eugenio Tadeu

UFC 17 Mark Coleman vs Pete Williams (awesome KO)

UFC 19 Jerry Bohlander vs Tito Ortiz

UFC 19 Tito Ortiz vs Guy Mezger

UFC 20 Pedro Rizzo vs Tra Telligman

  13. Met Denise Lewis for a second time today. She is knee-tremblingly beautiful and so friendly.

I remember when she had a short stint as the regular sports correspondant/reporter on our local news, Midlands Today, and she was painful to watch. A world class athlete she may have been, but a truely woeful presenter.

  14. Seemed like a real breakthrough day for him, I like him, he's a bit of a character and a very good player to watch. For all his playing up to crowd he seems like a decent chap in his interviews, although a little odd.

I enjoyed the rapid tournament as a whole but I think it should be a bit longer. Two people in 3 games in ones day is a bit much

He comes across pretty unnatural when trying to portray the bad guy gimmick, it just doesnt suit him. I remember when I first saw him at the Grand Slam, and it appeared he was originally just trying to show a bit of personality/character, but misjudged things, and the crowd was on his back almost instantly. From his interviews he just seems a decent, pleasant chap.

Agree about the format. Quarters, Semis and Final in one day was too much. As a viewer I was struggling, so it must have been doubly tough for the players.

  15. ive got the Extreme Fighting 1-4 DVD, i watched it years ago when i was just starting to become a diehard, i remember them having Sperry listed as being something like 150-0 on there, doing the old 'BJJ matches included' thing, he fights Igor Zinoviev...it's abit of an MMA classic.

Even worse Sperry was billed at like 270-0

Sperry-Zinoviev was the reason I bought the DVD because I'd heard it was great.I thought it was a really good fight, especially for the time.I couldn't believe that one escape Igor pulled off,Sperry had him mounted and he somehow managed to sweep and turn him over straight into a guillotine.

Bit odd for someone with 270 fights to freak out and tap just because he got a cut though ;)

Kinda reminds me of the David vs Goliath tournament from UFC 8, where Don Frye faces Thomas Ramirez. Ramirez is introduced as being 'undefeated in over 200 challenge matches on the Islands' but the far lighter Predator knocks him out in 7 seconds. Not that I am questioning things but....

  16. I dont know how many people are aware of this one, but its the best fight to come out of the IFL and one of my all time favourites, and its been kindly uploaded onto youtube.

Shad Lierley vs Chris Horodecki from 06.01.07

  17.

    OH MY GOD. AMAZING!

    Great find

Never saw that before or heard of it

also Doug and his brother publicly quit a promotion in the ring and bury there gimmicks

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8KWzPH9_4Y...=video_response

I had actually posted the clip from Continental a while back in this thread, and it got zero response, so it is nice to see that people are being made aware of it. It is a hell of an angle, with the added bonus of the downright sexy Dirty White Girl Kim.

  18. A few fight listings and notes from my own list on a few of the cards that have been mentioned, and I will add the continuining praise for Pride Bushido 9, as it is one of the best MMA shows in history.

    EXTREME FIGHTING II 04.26.96

Jason Canals vs Nigel Scantelbury (boring fight with lots of lying on the canvas and not doing much)

    John Lewis vs Jim Teachout

    Steve Falkner vs Igor Zinoviev

    Ralph Gracie vs Steve Nelson

    Jean Riviere vs Carlos Newton

    Marcus

  19. I got one called Extreme Fighting Vols 1-4 but haven't got round to watching yet.Supposed to be good. It's got the likes of Mario Sperry,Conan Silveira,Carlos Newton,Maurice Smith and even a fight between Matt Hume and Erik Paulson which I'm quite looking forward to.

Wish they would release WEC,Dream & Strikeforce DVDs with prelims etc.WEC prelims are impossible to find if they never aired on the live broadcast. All them great fights that never see the light of day.

I have seen Extreme Fighting II & IV, and II is an awful card. IV on the otherhand (if it is the one that features the debuts of Kevin Jackson and Kenny Monday) is the polar opposite and is really worth making the effort to see. I am pretty sure I still have that on an old NTSC video somewhere. I will post some more detailed thoughts on II in the morning when I dig out my matchlistings and notes.

In regards to the WEC, dont the prelims eventually air on the Wrekcage show on Versus? I have got the first two seasons, and am pretty sure there was a season 3.

  20. Nice idea for a thread. I am slowly trying to make may through the earlier UFC's that I didn't watch at the time, and wanted to make a post about the show I will be writing about now, but just couldn't find anywhere suitable, so now here goes. Sorry the notes will not be as detailed as what they could have been as it is several months down the line.
