  1. I watched the star wars trilogy with my wife recently. It was such a joy to watch them with someone so utterly oblivious of pop culture. She had no idea Vader was Luke's father, when Luke first goes to find Yoda she fell for the slow reveal completely (she actually said 'surely there's no way that thing is Yoda?'), and just generally having no knowledge or preconceptions of the characters. It was awesome. I never had that experience, so it's as close as I could get.

I had this with my 6 year old daughter.

She watched the originals with me, and during the Vader-Luke reveal, her tiny mind was blown apart. It prompted a full on "whaaaaat" reaction from her as well.

  2.

A friend of mine had exactly the same thing, and its basically the formalities of: you can either choose voluntary redundancy now OR follow through with the whole transfer thing, because that's the only other step to take.

Completely up to you, In my friends case it worked out due to a mix up in his workplace, and he got to stay on, but it's whatever works out best for yourself/your family.

That doesn't appear to be the case in this instance though.  I'm not being offered redundancy.  I'm being told I will TUPE transfer, to a job.  Which will then be deleted immediately, and will then have to go through a further consultation about redundancy during which time, it's not clear exactly what I'd be doing since they are saying they wont be continuing the post.

Oh right, that sucks then. I honestly don't know what to suggest. Are you in a union or anything like that? might be worth consulting a rep regarding if possible.

  4. I have fond memories of the spectrum, although looking back trying to play a game took forever. You have to put in the cassette in, like load it up (which made various fax machine/dial up noises for a while) then you played. We had a bin bag full of games, although I can't remember anything past Chucky Egg and Donkey Kong.

  5. Watched Akira last night for the first time, and its a combination of amazing and bat shit insane.

The animation is out of this world, and puts a lot of modern stuff to shame. Story-wise, I *think* I got everything, but it all goes a bit nuts towards the end. Very much worth watching though, if anybody hasn't. I'll be picking up a blu-ray of this at some point!

  6. I watched the Raw after Wrestlemania 29 last night. What were they thinking turning The Miz and Alberto Del Rio face?

Also, I have absolutely no memory of Booker T being the Smackdown GM.

I just read that last line and thought "...he wasn't GM was he?" , but looked it up and yep he was. How did I miss that?

  7. For me, I'd have Lesnar win the rumble, last eliminating Goldberg, and 'berg taking the universal title at Fastlane from Owens, leading to a "Lensar/Goldberg 3: this time it's personal", and it [might] give the universal title a bit more of a bump as well, with two absolute beasts fight over it in the main event of the biggest PPV of the year.

Then again the apparent winner of the rumble from the betting odds is:

    The Undertaker

which I could also see happening.

  8. Ah, that's good to hear then.

As potentially sad as it is, I really enjoyed the building of the cathedral in itself in Pillars, which then spurred me onto check out York Cathedral when I was visiting, and despite not being religious at all, I enjoyed it for the building that it is.

And Gus: Christ alive that sounds horrifying! I'm aware some nasty stuff went down in that time, but crikey that's bad.

  9. I liked World Without End. I didn't connect with any characters in the same way as Jack and Aliena in Pillars, but the plot and scope are similarly epic and you still get really invested in what happens.

    Cool, that's good to hear.

I got sucked into the Jack/Aliena stuff in Pillars as well, are they in this at all? I wasn't sure if its a straight sequel or if its just set in the same world but a different time? truth me told I should have looked as it does mention the years it's working from, but I hadn't checked when Pillars finished.

  10. Ghost in the Shell is "OK", like the animation is amazing in parts, but I thought the story and ending was a bit "meh". I recorded Akira from the weekend and am yet to watch it, but I've heard its amazing.

  11. Just started: World Without End by Ken Follet

I really enjoyed the first one, [Pillars of The Earth], so hoping this one is more of the same. I may be wrong, although this one is a bit longer as well, which will make it the largest book I've read so far. At least it'll keep me busy!

  12. I really liked Iron Man 3, and the whole Mandarin thing was [i thought] pretty cool.

There is also a "one-shot" called "hail to the king" which suggests:

That there is infact real mandarin in the MCU afterall, and the bad guys from Iron Man just started using his name as a cover for their operations

  13. I saw a ton of movies over the Christmas/New year period that I've never seen before.

The "stand out" movies were Singin' In The Rain and An American In Paris ,both I'd never seen due to them being musical/dancing movies which I just didn't think I'd like.

Gotta say though, I enjoyed them a fair amount including everything from the way they've shot certain scenes, the acting and even the dancing numbers. Kelly in particular dances in a very "masculine" way, (if that makes sense), and I found both movies highly watchable.

Singin' in the Rain in particular, I had never watched partially on principle when I was a lot younger thinking it would be terrible, but it was very funny in places. Later I would find out the main women in that is Carrie Fishers mother, which was ill timed due to her passing, but an interesting little bit either way. [that she was in it, not that she died].

There are many films from in/around that time I've never seen, so if we have fans of movies from that era on here, please let me know any recommendations!

  14. Oh and that girl in the bunny mask... damn.

Yeah...Who is that? Mamma Mia indeed!

Loved the whole WK event, and caught some of "New Years Dash" as well. The Omega/Okada match didn't get going until the middle part, for me at least, but I did love that finishing section of the match. Omega looked fantastic in everything he did, and Okada was good as well.

Looking forward to see where NJPW go from here, with the New Years Dash set up as well. G1 and NJ cup will be good as well hopefully.
