  1. I liked him as CK Lite. :(

    you win, mansfield.... you win.

    Real names! He's shooting! :omg:

    :sly:

Who the hell is CK Lite? I have no memory of such a person... I think... ;-)

CK Lite is the son of "That 70's" Andy Shoes, who travelled forward in time so that they could work together as a tag team. It's a Triple X thing.

I believe that Gordon is referencing the fact that CK Lite was completely removed from the time stream, and thusly never existed, as a result of a low blow a few shows back. Hence the ;-) .

    That's brilliant.

  2. Ah, I see. That's even worse than a restart. To win me over, the win had to be decisive, and to win it like that... It's basically a fluke, isn't it?

What are you on about? It wasn't designed to 'win you over'. JBL was the heel, the finish was designed to piss you off. Mission accomplished.

I'm fully aware of that, but a champion, face or heel, has to be perceived to have some kind of ability, or he wouldn't be challenging for the title, and JBL didn't really show that for me until he was well into his title reign. If he cheats to win the belt, fair game, that's a finish designed to piss people off and want to see Eddie get his revenge or Taker get the title off him or whatever, but the way he won it didn't even do that for me, and as a result I didn't buy into him as a champion or care enough about the title to want to see anyone with it. Explaining what I'm on about accomplished!

OK I get you now, but I think it had been well established already in this thread that rushing the belt onto JBL was a massively unpopular move at the time. The fluke manner in which he won the actual title match had nothing to do with it, it was the fact that he was there in the first place and booked to win that pissed everybody off. Your earlier post made it sound like you were not impressed because JBL hadn't outwrestled Guerrero.

Understood. Could have worded my first post better, though for me it was the fluke rather than the being there I was least keen on. Definitely nothing to do with outwrestling, though - with it being a Texas Bullrope match, JBL should have beaten Eddie with ease... then put him in the concrete crypt for laughs.

  4. I still maintain that the rapid ascension of JBL to the main event, and his title win, were terribly done. The last person he wrestled before he challenged for the WWE Title was Scotty 2 Hotty. There was no attempt to make him a top guy by putting him with other top guys (not that there were many on SmackDown at that point, but Scotty 2 Hotty?)

The Judgment Day main event with Eddie ended in a DQ, and I'm fairly sure Jables didn't even wrestle again until the GAB, where he actually won the title, and did so in a really unconvincing way. Didn't there have to be a referee restart for him to win?

That coupled with the fact the first few months of his title reign were pretty weak and uneventful, meant I couldn't like him as Champion. Great character, yeah, but not Champion. It took til near the end to bring me round, and now I kind of miss him, especially on commentary.

The match wasn't re-started Angle (I think was the GM at the time) showed footage of the match ending and thatshowed JBL touched a turnbuckle first (the ref thought Eddie had touched it first).

  6. Am I right in thinking that Nathan Cruz, as 'Superstar' Nathan Irwin, made a thread about himself on here just when he was starting out, got a load of abuse, and had a bit of a meltdown? If that's the same person, good on him for making something of himself.

  7. Currently reading Charlotte Roche's "Wetlands" which is violently veering back and forth between disgusting me and giving me the horn. So, thumbs firmly up.

A friend of mine wrote her dissertation on this book. I only read her essay, not the book, but yeah, it sounds horrific.

Anyway, OH DEAR GOD GLENN BECK HAS WRITTEN A NOVEL. Anyone who knows who Glenn Beck is will be simultaneously curious and slightly sick in their mouths.

(and here is an amusing article on it)

  8. TheDownPlayer.com is an excellent resource for new (free) music. They have ten free mp3s a day to download (free) from a wide range of genres, and naturally there's some rubbish, but there's plenty of cool stuff too. The songs usually change daily from Monday to Friday - today's selection includes Miiike Snow, Cat Power, and remixes of Feist and Kele tunes. I really recommend inserting it into your daily cycle of websites to visit - you never know what you might discover.

    I like Cat Power

  9. Steve Guttenburg is a desperate/lazy man.

My instinct was to wonder where the hell he'd been for 20 year, but according to imdb he didn't do so much in the '90's but he's been pretty busy the last 10 years. Not that I recogised many of the things he's been in :(

What happened though? He was one of the biggest stars in the 80's then suddenly you barely heard his name.

He was quite good and creepy in Veronica Mars. And pretty awesome doing the standard self-piss-take of his somewhat fading stardom in Party Down this year.

He was wonderful in 'Single Santa Seeking Mrs Claus' when I saw it on Sky Movies last Christmas.

  10. As far as I know, the whole series is still on iPlayer. Tempted to do a rewatch of them all before Saturday.

Meanwhile, anyone else been to the Dr Who exhibition at the Life Centre in Newcastle? It's bloody fantastic!

  11. I was sat on the edge of the sofa by the end, wide mouthed in awe. I just hope the next week flies by!.

    Moffat is a genius.

The series really has stood alone and you can almost forget the RTD series' ever existed. Smith has proven his critics wrong in that he has not only shown himself a worthy match for Tennant, but I think I can safely say that given time, he may overtake Tennant as the greatest Doctor. I loved the last two episodes of the Tennant era and he's really had some memorable episodes that will keep him up there as one of the great Doctors, but the series has really moved away from clich

  12. The Van Gogh episode was perfect. And the scene where Vincent was taking in the modern reception to his work, in tears, whilst a perfectly cast Bill Nighy waxed lyrical about his hero had me choked.

I was livid, bloody livid, when the day after I read a review of the show that said it was confusing that Van Gogh died anyway, and that showing him the future mustn't have had any point. But, surely the point of it (and the wider point about mental health), was that just being shown the good doesn't always change things. In fact, the Doctor said as much.

Agreed, I didn't think I'd like the Van Gogh episode when seeing the preview but I thought it was as close to a perfect Dr. Who episode as is possible. I loved how they dealt with his depression and didn't shy away from the subject of suicide despite the fact this is primarily a kids show.

This weeks episode was purely brilliant and epic, but I don't know whether next weeks will be able to match up to the hype given to it by this weeks cliffhanger.

Agreed with both of you on the Vincent episode. And that scene choked me up too... beautiful and brilliant and perfect.

I'm certain I will be furiously shat on by long-time "proper" fans for saying this, but I've never enjoyed Dr Who as much as I have this series. It's been excellent week in week out.

  13. I'm not suprised on the Anchorman 2 news. With Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd and Steve Carell now huge stars the budget for those 3 alone was probably off the charts expensive.

According to the director, it really wasn't. They got it down pretty low, but Paramount still wouldn't do it.

Is it not true that they all agreed to cut their salaries if it meant they could make the film? I think Ben Stiller was going to do the same for Zoolander 2 (which has also been axed).

  14. A whole lot of "What the fuck's going on?" and the usual Mill phone-it-in FX job saved by some snappy dialogue ("You're Scottish; fry something!") and a fast pace.

The title sequence and new theme music are pretty terrible. I'll forgive these for the hot ginger assistant. Overall, it was a whole lot better than most of the previous season and the various "specials" over the last couple of years.

Plus, the "Coming Soon" trailer had Bill Nighy...

It also had James Cunting Corden. I think it's safe to say I wont be watching that episode.

I think she'll turn into a creepy in love assistant more so than the others with that wedding dress bit.

I could be wrong though, but I doubt she's going to be the next Donna where she isn't in love but changes the Doctor for the better etc.

The wedding dress wasn't because she was in love with the Doctor, was it? In the "Coming Soon" she definitely said something along the lines of "I'm meant to be getting married tomorrow!" - another two years had passed, so I assumed she'd got engaged to that nurse bloke. Lucky bastard.

  15. Britain wasn't given a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. I don't like that.

Neither do I to be honest.

I see it as our leaders thinking they know better than us, when they are supposedly elected to represent us. A simple vote is all I ask. It comes back to this elitist attitude.

So they want a new order under a global structure. Is it their right to move us in that direction without input from the people? Whether their intentions are good or not? I don't think it is.

Quick question, please clear up if you can -

Wouldn't you be worried that your vote wouldn't count for anything? I mean, if everyone is as corrupt and hell-bent on world domination as you say, surely they'd nullify any dissenting votes and just do what they wanted anyway? In that situation, where the elites ignore your vote and do what they like regardless, what's the point in demanding democratic process?

    Just wondering, is all.

  16. I didn't even think Mania XX was the best triple threat involving those three guys.

Hmm, tough call for me, that one. From an actual standalone perspective, the Backlash re-match was probably better, but in terms of crowd expectation and the stage it was on, the first was a lot more emotional. Plus, the main reason I prefer the WMXX match is down to a simple piece of booking that was nevertheless sheer class: Triple H had been in the Crossface for so long, and HBK had been out of the picture for a while, my heart was sinking as Trips failed to tap - for so long, I (and I'm sure others) had been so long conditioned by WWE to think that that meant Benoit wasn't going to win because HBK would break it up, and we all know what happens when a finisher fails to finish the match: the guy doesn't win. Also, on the side, WWE had done a great job of working the internet by leaking that there was a possibility that Benoit wouldn't go over because they were going to put the belt on him at Backlash owing to it being in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta.

So, with all that in mind, when Triple H tapped in the centre of the ring, after about two minutes in the Crippler Crossface, I jumped off the sofa with a yell and punched the air like I used to do when watching football. That was probably the last time anything wrestling did made me do anything like that.

You're not alone in feeling like that - I did exactly the same thing.
