The Brave :

Raphael (Johnny Depp, also making his directorial debut) and his young family live in Morgantown on the edge of the American Dream. With one step over the poverty line, he sees only one way out... money. Raphael meets the monstrous snuff movie maker McCarthy (Marlon Brando). He offers Raphael $30,000 to be the star of one of his movies. He accepts and has $5,000 in his hand, $25,000 to go to his family and just one week to live the rest of his life. Determined to make something good out of his last seven days, he builds a junkyard paradise for his family. He relishes his new friendship with his kids and falls in love with his wife all over again. Realising that he is worth more to his family alive than dead, he tries to return the money and end the contract... but is it too late?

Picked this up from Play.com purely because it was directed by Johnny Depp, and it left me feeling a little underwhelmed. The story is touching, if a little implausible and the acting is great throughout with special props to the children playing Depp's kids whose performances were very natural. Depp himself carrries the film really well, but in terms of direction it's oddly slow and it seems he can't decide wether he wants it to be full of quirky humour or an involving emotional drama. The ending was very emotional though and I nearly reached for the tissues! :(

Anyone else seen it?

I also wanna add to the Broken Arrow love.

The Last King of Scotland

Fantastic film. I'd say that Forest Whitaker needs to win best actor at the oscars for this, but I haven't seen all of the other nominees. Either way, he is amazing in this film.

People are critical of the way in which Amin is often viewed as a figure of fun - a comedic buffoon who is laughed, at, sometimes at the expense of acknowledging his horrendous crimes. Whitaker manages to put accross his childlike yet brutal nature in a way that's both entertaining and frightening in equal measure. Charismatic, charming, funny, deluded, vulnerable, naive, paranoid, terrifying and brutal at the same time, sometimes in the same scene.

Despite some criticism for not fully putting accross the terror of life in Uganda under Amin, the film still makes an impact and does a lot to dispel the idea that Idi Amin was some kind of clown, and one particularly grisly scene is reminiscent of SAW for its brutality and must have pushed the limits of a 15 certificate.

James McEvoy and Kerry Washington as Kay Amin also put in fine performances, but it's hard to look past Whitaker when talking about this film.

A fascinating and engaging film that doesn't drag at all during the 2 hours, and one that I thoroughly recommend.

Had a bit of a movie marathon this weekend!...

Pursuit Of HappYness

I thought this was really really good. A real 'feel good' film. The off screen relationship between Will Smith and Jaden Smith was the main reason that the film worked so well. I cant remember seeing a better Will Smith performance.. ever.

Very touching, heart warming film.. with humour scattered here and there.

Rocky 6

I watched this again in the Cinema.. and it deserves another review.

Fucking fantastic. Before I went to watch it for the 2nd time.. I watched Rocky 1 on Sky Cinema.. and didnt realise until I watched Rocky 6 again.. how identical the two films are. The dog, the fight build up, the underdog status etc.

Terminator 2 - Judgement Day

Ive probably watched this over 100 times now.. Still one of the greatest films ever made... ever.

Keeping Mum

This was pretty funny.. not something Ill watch again though.. but dont regret watching it. I thought Grace Hawkins was really good aswell.

Harold And Kumar Go To The White Castle

I watched this again after a year or so.. still really really funny.. a simple.. unique.. silly story.. but worked really effectively. I thought the mix of the two characters fit this movie perfectly.

The first time I watched this was the night before a major uni exam!.. We were only meant to watch the first 5 minutes to get a little taster.. but ended up watching the whole thing. The scene with the 'hills have eyes' guy had us laughing for ages.

The Passion Of The Christ

This film, smothered with the name of Mel Gibson and the hype of the Christian world, is hideously over-rated.

I'm coming at this film as a stand-alone piece, i.e. how it stands up without the infamous bible story for it to fall back on.

It chooses not to have any character development, instead it relies on the audience's knowledge of the Good Friday story, e.g. "oh right, thats Judas, he is a bastard", sort of thing. So when Jesus is saying stuff like "You'll only get to heaven through me" to Pilot, without the contextual background of the bible, he hardly makes a convincing hero. Certainly that is not just the scripts fault, but it could have been avoided.

The film is over-directed, and despite being in foreign language, still feels very much like a blockbuster.

Having said that, some of the acting is very good, especially Hristo Shopov as Pilot, and the underlying sub-plots are intriguring, if ignored (e.g I would have rather watched 2 hours of Judas, exploring why he betrayed Jesus and more depth on his guilt).

This is the sort of film, that if you accepted or even *gasps* enjoy the Christian gospel side of it as being legitimate enough, that you will probably think it is an adequate piece. However, in terms of being good cinema it falls flat on its fat, scarred arse.

Antwon Fisher - Denzel Washington's directorial debut...a drama/biopic about a young fella named Antwone Fisher (also the writer of the movie). Fisher's story isnt all that remarkable to be honest, its basically about an orphaned boy who decides to go back and find his real family. It sounds like the kinda thing that my mam would watch on truemovies but what sets this apart from those shitty drama's are the performances, Washington is superb as the navy guidance counceller and Derek Luke is nothing short of a revelation as Fisher. This is a serious yet simple story that's packed with emotion, if there's a dry house at the end of this forgotten gem i'll eat own shit.

Cars... fianlly.

Bit of a slow start (takes about half-an-hour to really get going), but I was properly hooked from then on in. I got a couple of big belly laughs out of a couple of tiny details and you have to watch the credits. Thumbs up.

Caddyshack - my favourite comedy...just pure gold from start to finish, Rodney Dangerfield steals the show..some of his one liners are classic. I also class this as perhaps Chevy Chase's best role, Chase is at his best when hes using his dead-pan wit and he's bang on the money here. A classic!

I watched The Three Trails Of *something* Estrada tonight starring and directed by Tommy Lee Jones. It was a pretty good movie, nothing bad at all but nothing mindblowing. It was well done that they got all the characters over with so little dialogue in the movie.Worth a watch but don't rush out to get it.

Superb! I was watching it again last night, never grows old.Watching Casino at the moment. Scorcese just hits the nail on the head everytime, the scripts and screenplay just ooze class. I've never been a huge fan of Taxi Driver or Gangs of New York but Goodfellas and Casino are 5/5 for my money.
