It’ll do. Main event isn’t getting the juices flowing but it was about the best they could come up with given the circumstances. Some decent fights scattered around on the undercard and a couple of interesting debuts. Doesn’t hurt that we get the Euro friendly start times. 2pm prelims, 5pm main card. Whole thing should be done and dusted by 8pm. Magomed Ankalaev vs Bogdan Guskov is our makeshift main event. This has been a right old balls up. Was originally supposed to be Ankalaev against Khalil Rountree but Rountree pulled out with an injury less than a fortnight before the show. The UFC scrambled and apparently reached out to both Jan Blachowicz and Paulo Costa first to step in. Blachowicz was actually scheduled to fight Guskov on the Belgrade card a week after this show. He says he initially wasn’t sure if he could make weight a week sooner than planned and asked for a Catchweight but Ankalaev said no. Blachowicz then decided he could make weight after all but by the time he got back to the UFC, they’d already been in touch with Guskov, who jumped at the opportunity immediately. As for Costa, he turned it down flat. And as much of a weirdo as he can be, I don’t blame him. Unlike Blachowicz, Costa wasn’t in camp when they offered him the fight. So they wanted him to jump in on just 13 days notice, in a five round main event, in Abu Dhabi, against #2 ranked Ankalaev, for no extra money? Oh, and it’s the last fight on his contract! Yeah, I don’t blame him one bit. Although, if he wants out, maybe he should’ve just done it. The circumstances would’ve given him a solid excuse in defeat, but if he pulled off the win? That would’ve been great for him going into free agency or renegotiating with the UFC. Whatever. Guskov stepped in. Fair play. This isn’t exactly ideal for Ankalaev either. That’s something that often gets overlooked when these late opponent changes happen. Everyone understandably focuses on the guy who’s stepping in on short notice but on the other side you’ve got a guy who’s had his opponent switched last minute and still said yes. Say what you want about Big Ank, I’m not really a fan myself, but he’s taking a risk himself here. Wasn’t long ago he was the champion. He literally lost the belt in his last fight in the rematch against Alex Pereira back in October. Couldn’t have gone much worse for him. After beating Pereira the first time on points, to not only get smoked in a round in the rematch, but to get the Jamahal Hill treatment and be made a meme out of? Just brutal. And worst of all, he’s probably never getting a chance at redemption now Pereira’s eaten himself up to Heavyweight. Never sure what to make of Ankalaev. He’s one of the best at 205 currently but that’s more of a statement on the lack of depth in the division than anything else really. He looks decent one fight but then fights like a bit of a goof other times. I will say he fought surprisingly well against Pereira the first time. I remember really not fancying his chances of getting through five rounds without walking onto something devastating. But he went the full 25 minutes with ‘Poatan’ and came through with the gold. But there was a lot of talk after the fact that Pereira went into that fight injured and, unfortunately for Ank, the way the rematch played out fed into that theory. Big moment for Guskov here. Like I said, he was all set to face Jan Blachowicz in Serbia at the start of August. That would’ve been a rematch of their draw at UFC 323 in December. Obviously this is a bigger opportunity for Guskov so I’m not surprised he jumped all over it. He’s from Uzbekistan, 33 years old and has a record of 18-3-1 with all his wins coming inside the distance, 15 by knockout. I’ve only seen his UFC fights and he hasn’t blown me away so far but, in fairness, he hasn’t been boring. In today’s 205 division, that goes a long way. He made his UFC debut in 2023 and got subbed by Volkan Oezdemir in a round but hasn’t lost since. Although, until recently, his opposition was pretty shite. Zac Pauga, Ryan Spann and Billy Elekana were his first three UFC wins. Not the best but he did at least finish them. He got a bit of a step up last July and stopped Nikita Krylov in a round. Then in December he had that draw with Blachowicz, which I do recall being a decent fight. This is our lot then. Not ideal but, with Rountree’s withdrawal, what were they realistically gonna do on less than two weeks notice? It’s not the worst Fight Night main event ever. I don’t particularly rate Guskov so I think Ankalaev should be winning this but who the fuck knows anymore? If nothing else, Guskov’s game, he’s aggressive and he goes for the finish. And Ank’s coming off getting chinned in a round. Stranger things have happened. Especially with a late switch of opponents. But yeah, Ankalaev should win. And to be honest, even though it’d only be a win over Guskov, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him getting right back in the title shot conversation with a decisive/highlight worthy win here. Let’s face it, there isn’t a lot going on at LHW at the minute and the champ Ulberg is on the shelf with a blown out knee. As much as I don’t think the matchmakers are keen on giving Ank another title shot, there’s every chance we end up seeing an Ank vs Jiri interim title fight before the year’s out if Ulberg’s return isn’t looking imminent by then. Steve Erceg vs Ramazan Temirov is apparently our co-main. Can’t say I’m really feeling it but we’ll see how it goes. Erceg is still in his rebuilding phase after that horrible three fight losing skid. He gave Pantoja a hell of a scrap in their title fight in 2024 but just came up short. In hindsight, despite how well he did that night, he really could’ve done with a significant step down in levels to give him chance to build himself back up. Instead they immediately threw him straight back in with top contenders Kai Kara-France and Brandon Moreno and he dropped two more losses. He’s managed to get back to winning ways in his last two fights, which has been good to see. Although I thought he looked really unconvincing against Ode Osbourne and I was ready to write him off at that point. But his performance against Tim Elliott on the Perth card in May was more encouraging. It’s been slow going but he seems to be on the right track. This fight might well derail that though. I can’t remember a whole lot about Temirov but I do recall him being a real awkward little shit with a grinding style. He’s Uzbek, 29 years old, 19-3 with 12 finishes and he’s on an 11 fight winning streak. He was last seen taking a decision off Charles Johnson at the Apex in March 2025 but he’s been serving a one year suspension for banned substances since then. I’d like to see Erceg continue to regain his confidence with another win here but I’ve got a bad feeling about it. Damian Rzepecki vs Magomed Zaynukov is a fight I’m going in completely blind on but I’m intrigued. Both are undefeated and both are making their UFC debuts. Always interesting to see that. The fact they’ve been chucked on the main card right out the gate adds to it as well. Although it’s probably not worth reading into that. It could be that the matchmakers are high on these two and wanna spotlight them, more likely it’s just the random nature of bout orders since the Paramount deal kicked in. Anyway, Rzepecki’s Polish, 24 years old and 10-0 with 9 finishes. Zaynukov’s Russian, 31 years old and 8-0 with 5 knockouts. He also has a 21-3 Kickboxing record. Another little wrinkle to this one, is the teams. Apparently, Rzepecki trains with Ilia Topuria. Zaynukov trains with Islam Makhachev. I know the big Makhachev vs Topuria superfight is dead in the water now but still, worth a mention. Rizvan Kuniev vs Tyrell Fortune is gonna be a great big stinking bad turd, isn’t it? Some fights you just know. And with the Heavyweights the likelihood of it goes up big time. Let’s just go through the motions and get this out the way. Kuniev’s from Dagestan, 34 years old and 13-3-1-1 with 8 not making it to the scorecards. He was the Eagle FC champ for a spell, fought in PFL and got popped for PEDs, got a win on DWCS in 2024, made his UFC debut last June and lost a split decision in a snoozer against Curtis Blaydes. Then in his last fight in February, he decisioned Jailton Almeida in an early contender for Worst Fight Of 2026. Just an abysmal fight. So he’s 1-1 so far in the UFC, and both were complete rotters. Fortune’s 36 with a record of 18-3-0-2. Had a long stint in Bellator, his first 17 fights were there, had a brief stint in PFL and then pissed about until making his UFC debut on the Seattle card in March. He beat Marcin Tybura on points in a dull fight but nowhere near as bad as Kuniev’s last couple. For that reason, I’m rooting for Fortune here. Haven’t got much desire to watch either of them but Fortune is just about the lesser of two evils here. Saygid Izagakhmaev vs Abubakar Vagaev is an all Russian clash and another fight where I’ve barely seen anything of either. Izagakhmaev is 31 and trains out of the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s gym. He’s 22-3 with 16 finishes and made his UFC debut on the Qatar card back in November, losing a split decision to Nicolas Dalby. I don’t remember him looking much good in that one but, to be fair, he hadn’t fought since a 2022 TKO over Shinya Aoki in ONE FC. Bit of a curious signing by the UFC really. Brought him in off a three year layoff? As for Vagaev… He’s a teammate of Khamzat Chimaev and a double champ in the ACA promotion in Russia. From what I can tell he wasn’t a two-weight champ, one belt was their Welterweight title and the other he got by winning their Grand Prix tournament. He’s 33 years old and has a record of 24-4. A quick glance through his record and I see he beat Michel Pereira way back in 2016. And more recently, he’s coming off a three fight streak and beat ex UFC fighter Albert Tumenov in his last fight. To put it in perspective though, that Tumenov win was February 2025, so he’s had quite a layoff, and he wasn’t that active before that. Also, he seems to be very much a decision merchant. Only 5 of his 24 wins were finished inside the distance. Interesting signing but I’m not expecting much, to be honest. He’s got all the hallmarks of a guy who’s gonna come in with a bit of buzz because of the double champ thing and being Khamzat’s boy, but then fizzles rapidly. We’ll see. Valter Walker vs Thomas Petersen. Another Heavyweight fight so obvious disclaimer that it could be awful. But I’ve gotta give it a look myself, if only to see if Walker can keep this mad heel hook streak going. Surely not, right? Walker is 28 years old, with a 15-1 record and he’s coming off FOUR, count ‘em, FOUR straight first round heel hook finishes. That’s correct, Mr Corrigan. Four. After losing an absolute stinker in his UFC debut against Lukasz Brzeski in April 2024, he’s managed to rattle off first round heel hooks against Junior Tafa, Don’Tale Mayes, Kennedy Nzechukwu and Louie Sutherland. OK, not a who’s who of victims there but pulling that sub off four times in a row, in the first round, is mental. Feels like something that could only happen in the bizzaro world of the Heavyweight division though. Petersen’s 11-4 with 8 finishes and has had a right mixed bag of results in the UFC. He’s coming off a majority decision over the mighty Guilherme Pat but he got brutally uppercutted into the shadow realm by Vitor Petrino in his previous fight. Can Valter make it five in a row? Seems silly to even suggest it might be possible but, honestly, Petersen’s shite enough that I could see him waddling straight into the same trap the last four did. Dustin Jacoby vs Muhammad Saidov. Not a clue. Never heard of this Saidov fella but looking him up, he’s undefeated at 9-0 with 8 finishes. Hasn’t beat anyone of note yet and I noticed on his Tapology page that he lost to Rizvan Kuniev in the amateurs but that was way back in 2018. Who knows? Jacoby’s 38 now, with a record of 22-9-1 and he’s coming off three consecutive knockout wins. Nothing earth shattering but the Petrino win was decent, I guess. And of course he’s had a bunch of Kickboxing fights as well. He’s no world beater, never has been, but he’s knocked about and got a fair bit of experience. He should be a good litmus test for Saidov and should at least give us a rough idea of what he’s about. Santiago Ponzinibbio vs Sam Patterson is a nothing fight at this stage but could be fun to watch. Ponz looks done to me though. He has for a while if we’re being honest. Good fighter in his day and it’s kind of forgotten now but he was actually becoming a fringe contender at Welterweight at one point before injuries derailed him. I don’t think he’d have ever actually won the title but back when he stopped Gunnar Nelson, beat Mike Perry and then knocked out Neil Magny in front of his home crowd in Argentina, it was looking like an eventual title shot was almost inevitable. Then he got injured and never fought for over two years. He’s never recaptured that 2018 form. He’s about to turn 40 in September, he’s gone 3-6 in his last 9 and he’s coming off a KO loss against Daniel Rodriguez and about a 14 month layoff. Not good. And Patterson… Yeah. He’s coming off a decision loss to MVP in maybe the worst fight of the year on the London card in March. I know it takes two to tango when it comes to bad fights but it was the typical frustrating shite we’ve been seeing for years from MVP so I put most of the blame on him. And yet bafflingly, despite MVP having a track record for these nothing happening stinkers, there were a lot of people trying to put all the blame on Patterson. I also recall Rogan blaming the matchmakers post-fight, which was bollocks. The matchmakers do some weird shit sometimes and they’re not above criticism but who can they match MVP up with for a good fight? Patterson was on a 4-0 win streak, all first round finishes, going into that one. If anything it seemed like the matchmakers were purposely trying to give MVP a fan friendly fight. If MVP can’t have a watchable fight with someone like that, what can you do? Anyway, yeah, I’d like to see Patterson bounce back with a win here. Nothing against the Ponz but it’s over anyway for him. Ismael Bonfim vs Axel Sola stands out to me as the obvious choice as ***WAND’S ONE TO WATCH*** on this card. Why it’s buried so far down the prelims, I don’t know, but it should be a good scrap. Brazil’s Bonfim is 30 years old with a 20-6 record and, after a promising start in the UFC with the flying knee KO over Terrance McKinney, he’s fallen on hard times. He’s gone 1-3 in his last 4 fights and comes this fight off back-to-back stoppage losses. Definitely the less successful of the Bonfim brothers but he’s never boring to watch. And speaking of being in entertaining fights… France’s Axel Sola’s last fight was that barnburner against Mason Jones on the London card in March. Seriously, if you’re reading this and somehow missed that fight, correct that immediately. You won’t regret it. It was a losing effort for Sola, his first loss, but it was such a great fight. It’s all a blur now and I’d have to look back through all the cards this year but I’d still have Jones vs Sola high on the FOTY list. Just a brilliant fight to watch. Sola’s 28 years old with a record of 11-1-1 and was the Ares FC champion before signing with the UFC. He’s got skills and I really liked his performance in his UFC debut against Rhys McKee. Hopefully he can bounce back from that first defeat but it was the kind of war you don’t wanna have too many of so who knows what that fight has taken out of him? We’ll see how he responds here but, unless the loss has completely changed him, I think he should beat Bonfim here. Should be exciting for however long it lasts though. Brendson Ribeiro vs Magomed Tuchalov. Never even heard of Tuchalov but just looking at this pairing, it’s obviously supposed to be a squash match. Ribeiro’s a jobber. Pure enhancement talent. He’s 17-10 overall and has gone 2-5 in the UFC. He’s lost his last three in a row and was finished in the first round every time. On the flip side, this is Tuchalov’s first Octagon appearance, he’s 26 years old and he’s 6-0 with none of the six making it past the second round. Yeah. On paper this definitely feels like the matchmakers are giving Tuchalov a freebie. Nurullo Aliev vs Mike Davis could be good. Aliev’s a bit of a handful from what I remember. Not exactly a finisher and he’s not the most active but I just remember that, when he does show up, he’s pretty relentless. He’s from Tajikistan, 25 years old and unbeaten at 11-0. Beat Rafael Alves, Joe Solecki and in his last fight in November he shat all over the hype train of Shem Rock and ruined his UFC debut. Davis is 33 with a 12-3 record. I remember there was some chatter years ago about him having a lot of potential and it did look that way. Long time fans will recall the horrific beating he put on an outmatched Thomas Gifford in 2019. And he actually beat Mason Jones in a cracking fight in 2021. But he really hasn’t been very active and all the gaps on his record resulted in him never really building any momentum. He’d show up once in a while, look really good, then disappear for 18 months or something. He’s coming off a flying knee TKO win over Mitch Ramirez here but, again, that was a full year ago. So this is a battle of the part timers. If they both actually show up, this could be decent. Don’t hold your breath though. Abdul Hussein vs Cody Gibson jerks the curtain. I’ll probably give it a bash. It’s Hussein’s UFC debut, he’s 28 years old, born in Lebanon but fights out of Finland and has a 15-2 record with 14 of those wins not needing the judges. Not bad. Had a quick look at his record and seen he got a first round TKO over Tyson Nam in December. He also lost a decision against Muhammad Mokaev on a BRAVE card back in 2021, not long before Mokaev signed with the UFC. Gibson’s a bit of a journeyman. He’ll be 39 in September, has a record of 21-12, he’s gone 3-5 in his last 8 and is coming off back-to-back losses where he was finished in both. He actually got stopped in just 21 seconds by Aoriqileng in his last fight on the Vancouver card in October. Did nothing for Ankalev, and was a truly god awful performance from Guskov. Whatever the complete opposite of making the most of an opportunity is, this was it. Would have been better to go for it in rounds 1 and 2, and at least give him a shot of winning and making it a star making performance. Temirov was rather good, wasn't he? Reminded me of John Linikear. Proper bombs in his gloves, which is rare for this division. The rest was good too, and have to give credit to the Kuniev fight. Wand, you did say its almost guaranteed to be a shit fight, but it was a good scrap to be fair. Gif request of the show...have they ever shown that Happy Birthday America ad before, with Dana looking disgustingly smug? If so, Ive not seen it. Just for prosperity and to annoy you, can you gif the slow zoom in and look to the camera? There's also something quite egocentric about the DWCS advert ending with a giant picture of his head on it too, with tiny pics of the fighters enclosed within. Quote

Guskov looked like he couldn’t be arsed and it was baffling to see considering it was the biggest opportunity of his career to date. He’s never been boring before in his previous UFC fights and granted this was a big step up and on short notice. But it’s not like Guskov rolled off the sofa, he was already in camp to fight on this week’s Belgrade card. And with Ank coming off a first round KO loss, the timing to catch him now might never have been better. All I can think is Guskov bottled it because he’s never fought like this before. It’s the only explanation I can think of, that maybe the bump up to headliner and step up in levels spooked him. He’s absolutely shat the bed. They won’t be in a hurry to give him a big fight again after this load of old wank. Wasn’t a great performance from Ankalaev either but at least he got the win. The finish made me laugh. It wasn’t even like Guskov was taking much of a beating, seemed like it was waved off more because he just stopped fighting. Goddard had just had enough. I don’t blame him. Rotten fight. Very little desire to see either of them again. And especially in five rounders. I’ve said it loads of times but it’s crazy to me that this is the same weight class that used to be seen as the glamour division of MMA. Temirov smoking Erceg in a round wasn’t how I saw that one playing out. I fancied Temirov to win but he’s usually more of a grinder so I thought he’d just rag Erceg about for a decision. Never seen him fight like this before but he wrecked Erceg. My initial thought was ‘hang on a minute, this guy’s coming off a suspension for banned substances and he’s suddenly got KO power?’ And his physique doesn’t exactly do anything to put those suspicions to bed. But I don’t know what the deal was with his suspension. Apparently it was a drug used to treat heart conditions which he popped for and he was prescribed it for a medical condition. But I don’t claim to be an expert on these things and it must be on the banned list for a reason. Rough loss for Erceg right when he looked like he might be getting back on track. Genuinely don’t know where he goes from here. He’s literally turned 31 today, he’s not an old man by any means. But it seems like he’s in no mans land at this point. Old John Pork had a decent debut. A rare case of a Dagestani fighter who’s more of a striker and he looked alright here. I wasn’t familiar with Rzepecki though so I can’t really read much into this. Hopefully Zaynukov faces a more established UFC name next time and we can get a better idea of what he’s about. I’m not gonna post it because it’s grim and people might be scrolling while eating but that pic doing the rounds of him front kicking Rzepecki in the gob and half his foot goes right inside his mouth is vile. It’s been all over my timeline the last couple of days. Wonder how much Colgate Rzepecki’s gone through since Saturday. And it helped that there was a finish. Barely took notice of the Vagaev vs Izagakhmaev main card opener. We had a house full of nieces and nephews by that point, as well as my own kids. Fight looked pretty dull anyway though, to be honest. I did notice that Vagaev seems to be almost allergic to finishes when I did the opening post. If this fight was typical of him, he doesn’t look like the most entertaining signing. Well, Valter Walker’s run of heel hooks came to an end. But he busts out the calf slicer in about 90 seconds instead! A ridiculous man. Don’t even know what to say about him and his leg fetish anymore. Feels like he could keep doing this for years at this kind of level. Doubt it works against the top ranked guys but most of the Heavyweight division is filled with useless blobs. Big Valter could carry on collecting ankles, calves and knees for a while yet. Muhammad Saidov stood out to me of the debuting fighters on this card. Never heard of him before his signing was announced but he looked a handful here. The headkick that led to the finish was nasty as well… Fuck! It’s a testament to Jacoby’s toughness that he ate that kick and wasn’t immediately out cold because that was brutal. Jacoby’s no top contender but he’s not a bum either and he was coming into this fight on a three fight win and stoppage streak. Saidov had the undefeated record and a bunch of finishes but this was still a step up for him on paper and he battered Jacoby. Not sure how far he can go but always happy to see fighters like this added to 205. Christ knows the division needs all the help it can get. Sam Patterson decking Ponzinibbio was the predictable result in 2026. Not even like Patterson’s some world beater but he has some power in his hands and Ponz hasn’t looked good in a while and was coming off a layoff. Yeah. He won’t but it’s probably time for Ponzinibbio to call it a day. He’s gonna be 40 soon and this is back-to-back stoppage losses now, 1-4 in his last 5, 3-7 in his last 10. It’s over, isn’t it? Never nice to see a fighter’s decline but I was happy to see Patterson get back on track after that stinker against MVP. Was nice to see Axel Sola get back in the win column. You’re never sure what to expect when an unbeaten fighter suffers their first defeat, and especially in a war like Sola had with Mason Jones. A first round sub over Bonfim here was probably just what the doctor ordered. Thought that Tuchalov fella didn’t look too clever. Came in undefeated at 6-0, all finishes, they feed him a jobber here in Brendson Ribeiro and he still manages to underwhelm. Got the decision but this was way more competitive than the matchmakers probably expected when they booked it. If you’re any kind of legit prospect, you blow through a guy like Ribeiro. Not go almost life and death with him and get your eye all jacked up. Nurullo Aliev got the win over Mike Davis but it was no fun to watch. Shame because it was one of the fights I was most looking forward to on the prelims but Aliev just went pure tunnel vision on the clinching and grappling and did little to no damage. And Davis had zero answers for it. Easy points win for Aliev but it was the type of performance that gets him nowhere. Right or wrong, you’re never getting off the prelims or getting big opportunities with this kind of style. Mike Davis has made an absolute tit of himself with his post-fight outbursts though. He posted a video where he’s bellyaching about the loss and still doing the old ‘wrestling is gay’ bit and acting like grapplers should be cut in 2026. “For the UFC, I thought you were cutting wrestlers bro. All they do is suck dicks for 15 minutes. What are we doing? This is gay bro. You’ve been cutting undefeated people on winning streaks. This isn’t RAF. Just gay people in the UFC. Get them the fuck outta here.” - Mike Davis Again, 2026 and we’re still getting fighters throwing tantrums when grapplers grapple. He kept saying he “just wanted to bang”. Maybe he shouldn’t have got into MMA then. Boxing, Kickboxing and Bare Knuckle have existed forever. Why make MMA your career if you’re gonna cry about grappling? He’s also taken to writing novels on Twitter about it… I did chuckle at him saying Aliev is the worst fighter he’s ever fought and calling him/his style gay over and over and then saying he’s a “nice guy” and wishing him success in that last tweet. Make your mind up. In amongst all the bollocks and complaining, the stuff about him saying the matchmakers basically threatened him to fight a certain way is something that’s probably gonna get lost in all this. I think we all knew/suspected that shit has been going on for years but seeing a fighter say it is interesting. I get his frustration but the way he’s gone on after the loss just made him look an absolute dickhead. Embarrassing shite for a 33 year old man. Abdul Hussein is another guy who had a solid debut performance. Standup didn’t look the best and he has a few dicey moments on the ground in the first round but he took over and managed to submit Gibson in the third.
