The pre-Boxing Day downtime served as a bit of a warning in this regard, I feel. If there's another prolonged period of forum downtime (i.e. Fri through Sat on a gameweek), perhaps it would be a good idea to create a system to allocate points to those who are unable to make their predictions, such as awarding them the same number of points as the lowest playing points scorer that week. Fog Dude
If there's another prolonged period of forum downtime (i.e. Fri through Sat on a gameweek), perhaps it would be a good idea to create a system to allocate points to those who are unable to make their predictions, such as awarding them the same number of points as the lowest playing points scorer that week. I tried something like this for a few months many seasons ago. It didn't really take off. Plus, the person who suggested it turned out to be a bit of a Ched Evans, so we aren't even supposed to talk about him on here anymore. Besides, people should really have made their picks by Friday afternoon under normal circumstances. I could've sworn they always used to. I don't know why there's nowadays this habit of a flood of posts on Friday evening and Saturday morning. In the specific case of this unprecedented quadruple week, it's within the rules not to place all your bets at once, but it does arguably run counter to the spirit of the competition. The format of the Christmas and New Year round this time out was not ideal for other participants, but figuring out the scores has been even more complicated for me than usual. If they're split across 3 different posts, the chances of me keeping concentration and making an error are even higher. So, if there are any mistakes anyone's spotted in the just-uploaded table, please let me know. Oh, and the results went into the mammoth opening post last night, as you'd expect. Fog Dude
Lots of movement this week due to the obvious much higher than average scoring. On the surface, ultimo seems to have done some phenomenal guesswork, but his score of 52 is in fact the equivalent of only sneaking into double figures in a regular round (three of the 55 fixtures fell to the weather, two of which were due to happen on the first Sunday, leaving 52 non-void games)... so what does that say for everybody else's performance? There's no change in the order of the top or bottom two, but the gaps at each end have reversed in size. It's now tight at the summit, but Seph has fallen further away from TUFCfan even though the latter missed the Boxing Day matches. Shy Dad's haul of 23 would be an outstanding score in any round, but in this case it's as the worst predictor of the festive period. Lots of movement in the middle 17 of the standings, including third-best estimator TildeGuy working his way up into third spot. There isn't time to go into every outcome individually, even though in a normal week some people would deserve a special mention for managing a three-pointer on certain results that all around them were getting outright wrong. The general trend was that Boxing Day wasn't particularly fruitful outside of the top flight, with The Blades' shock reverse at Vale Park especially good at catching people unawares. The 8 games that went ahead two days later didn't prove very useful either, as few could foresee at Stalemate at Bloomfield Road. The five EPL results on New Year's Day were a virtual write-off, with surprise losses on the road for Arsenal and Chelsea - the latter in an eight-goal thriller - and the failure of United to win at the Britannia being especially bad at yielding points of any sort. Three home wins in other divisions redeemed that section somewhat, but another goalless draw in Australia for the 'Asian' champions wasn't much cop. The FA Cup was a great chance for most to get some easy points, with the repeat of last season's final being particularly helpful. Only the scorelines at Turf Moor and Spotland in East Lancashire, alongside Leicester's victory in an all-Prem tie, were tough to get right. A majority of the 15 (!) French Cup clashes that were included went with the form book so it was pot luck in many cases as to whether people got the exact scoreline or not. Only the upset in Grenoble was a dud, since it was also the sole meeting decided in a shootout. Home victories for Avranches, Bastia and occasionally Valenciennes were the main results that participants appeared to find tricky. Right, hope you all enjoyed that and had a good Chrimbo and saw Thursday morning in nicely. New set of 10 coming up tomorrow.
