It's probably not true, but it has been repeated so many times that it has almost become as accepted as fact by some people. Â Tommy Rich's career petered out and he never realised his promise. People forget though that when he got his brief world title run Rich was over like crazy and was a big, big star. That's more than likely why he really got the title. Â Jim Wilson talks about said Barnett/Rich fellatio rumour in his excellent book, "Chokehold: Pro Wrestling's Real Mayhem Outside the Ring"". Wilson points out that San Francisco NWA promotor Roy Shire testified under oath in court that he believed the rumour to be entirely true. The Sheik also claims to have seen Barnett and Rich in bed together at Jim's Colony Square condo when The Sheik, looking for the bathroom burst through the wrong door to see some Barnett-on-Blonde action. Â I think that there's ample weight to the rumour. Barnett had complete control at the time over the NWA World Championship. Putting the strap on Wildfire back in '81 is akin to someone like Zack Ryder winning the WWE Championship next week. Â Then why did his brief ascension to the NWA World Championship cause so much consternation inside The Business two decades* ago? Rich was undeniably very over for a spell in the early eighties but putting the strap around his waist was fairly inexplicable to the boys and left a lot of workers scratching their fork scarred heads. PWI readers and teenyboppers may have considered Wildfire a rising star and a lock for a very bright future but his peers of the time certainly didn't perceive Rich as being ready for or remotely deserving a taste of the gold.
