Re. MMA Documentaries

I'd recommend 'Cage Fighting Women' which aired on BBC 4. Don't think it ever got an official retail release, but I am guessing it is easily available online. It looks at British female fighters Lisa Higo and Rosi Sexton, and follows them in the build up to their respective fights. Not watched it for a long time, but Sexton comes across very well and pretty much quashes people stereotypes on fighters. I think it is Higo's husband/trainer who doesn't come out of this looking good.

As Ebb said, I'd definately recommend the Pride doc and I still haven't got round to watching Driven, even though I've had a copy of it now for months.

Choke a documentary about 95's Vale Tudo tourney. The little slope in it has a ton of heart considering the beating he takes, shame the guy ended up with borderline brain damage afterwards.

I think I'll give this a watch now, I've not seen much from those tournaments apart from a bit of Bas ( if he was in any I might be getting mistaken )

Nice one

A bunch more MMA/NHB Docs after going through my collection:

A&E Biography: Randy Couture

Badr Hari 'Vechtershart'

Blood, Sweat & Teeth: The Gauntlet Trials

Cage Fighter Behind the Scenes: Neil Grove

Cung Le 'Making of a Champion'

Invincible Warrior & Underground NHB

Juggs vs Japan MMA

Matt Hughes 'Life Story'

Musangwe Fight Club

Also, whilst not Documentaries, I would suggest the ESPN E:60 specials that they did on MMA fighters/personalities. The Dana White and Lee Murray ones are especially highly recommended, although there are also ones for Brock, Kimbo, Gina and Miletich.

Another one for the serious injury column. Hopefully his recovery will be better than predicted.

Following risky move, Chicago MMA fighter paralyzed in amateur bout

This past Saturday at an MMA event in Joliet, Ill., 20-year-old amateur fighter Jeff Dunbar was stuck in a bad way.

In the ninth of 11 scheduled fights at a Dec. 17 Fight Card Entertainment event, fellow fighter Rudy Bahena clung to Dunbar's back, torqued a standing rear-naked choke, and had his opponent desperate enough to try the unthinkable.

Believing to be out of better options, Dunbar dove forward, hoping he could spike Bahena into the canvas. It was an ill-fated decision

Bas fought nearly all of his MMA fights in Pancrase. I haven't seen a lot of Bas' fights actually, he's someone I've been meaning to see more of as i've only seen his UFC fights, a handful of Pancrase stuff and his comeback fight with Warpath.

The Vale Tudo Japan tourneys featured some well known US fighters like Frank Shamrock, Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn though.

Of the docs mentioned I've seen a fair few. Choke, Smashing Machine and Tyson's are excellent. I'd highly recommend the Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes recent ones the UFC put out aswell. The Royce one in particular is a must see.

I've been meaning to watch that Renzo Gracie doc for while now. Is it any good? Also has anyone seen the BJ Penn 90 Days doc? Whats that like?

Oh and Merry Christmas

It's terrible it happened, but the guy did it to himself. What he should have done is launched himelf backwards hoping for a blow to the back of the guy's head will make him let go. If it doesn't work then you tap or go to sleep. Trying to spike the guy onto his head is really fucking dangerous and could have crippled the fighter applying the choke. In amateur fights, you'll want to win, but you also have to respect the other guy. If you're fighting on a Saturday, you're going to be hurting on a Sunday win or lose. So just take the loss and tap, then take that loss to learn from.

the Renzo one is a good watch, i love his old Vale Tudo stories.

There's another decent litte Renzo doc that can be found as an extra on the Smashing Machine DVD (its on the US version, not sure about the UK dvd), it follows him before one of his fights in Pride. Seek it out.

There is a great 3 disc comp of Bas featuring all his Pancrase stuff aswell as the TK and Randleman UFC fights. I am pretty sure it is a retail release so not sure how he managed to get the UFC fights on there, though the real bonus is the fact that El Guapo does the commentary on all the fights himself.

From what I remember, he was pretty banged up physically for the Warpath fight and only went through with it due to the ridiculously high pay off he was getting (I'd need to check the Observer to confirm what the number actually was).
