  1. One of the biggest releases of the year tomorrow - Halo Infinite!

    Anyone got any hype?

I was a huge fan of the first 2 games. They were enough to justify the OG Xbox alone. I truly do not even want to think about how many hours me and my friends put into Halo 2 split screen 4 player. I pretty much went straight from constant Goldeneye with my brother and cousin in the 90s to constant Halo with my friends in the 00s. Still, a lot of good memories of lugging the huge original Xbox (the beautiful transparent model) and controllers round to whoever's house we were hanging out at and just playing for hours on end.

Onto the 360 and to be honest, 3 never really clicked with me. The multiplayer was good but the campaign was lacking. I think around that time I was way more enamoured with Gears. I didn't even really bother with ODST but Halo Reach had one of the best FPS campaigns ever in my opinion and had a genuinely memorable, superbly executed ending.

I didn't bother with 4 or 5 as both were during my gaming hiatus. When I got back into gaming I went with a PS4. I gather both were at best flawed and at worst massive misfires though.

Everything I am reading about Infinite suggests its heavily inspired by Halo: CE but with some open world elements - thankfully it seems like its more tightly focused, mid sized open areas rather than enormous Ubisoft style maps.

I genuinely cant wait. Roll on 6pm tomorrow when it unlocks on Game Pass.

I was "coming of age" in 1994 (not a wank reference but I was wanking a lot then) when Definitely Maybe came out and Oasis started getting a lot of hype. I was more of a Blur fan, although also not really because Parklife was annoying as fuck, but hated Oasis and all the lad swagger that came with them. Coming out of grunge and being endlessly shat on and harassed by bell-ends going "oi oi grunger...wheres your guitar mate lmao" you suddenly had the same wankers going on about how much they loved Oasis and it was great music for listening to before football and after having a fight.

That said Definitely Maybe is an absolute ripper of an album, with the only stinker being "Married With Children", and I still guiltily listen to it from time to time. All downhill from there though, got too big, did too much coke and Noel had too much power to add a hundred guitar tracks with an orchestra on every song.

I agree with all of this except I was much younger than you in '94 so wouldn't have been busting off yet. My prime beating off years would have been more in the nu-metal era than britpop.

I did truly love Oasis when I was a kid. Definitely the first band I ever got into in any kind of meaningful way. I remember I had a CD Walkman at the time and would just play the first two albums on repeat for a couple of years straight. I still love both of those records now but its hard to tell how much of that is nostalgia.

My parents took me to see them at Loch Lomond in 1996 which was the first concert I ever went to. I was only 9 though so don't have very clear memories of it.

95% of everything after those first couple of years is utter plops though and they definitely have one of the worst fanbases of all fucking time.

I can only assume Guardians of the Galaxy is getting such good reviews because of the very low expectations going in after the Avengers game? Its a slightly better than average game, and nowehere close to as good as Spiderman and the Batman games. The lack of opportunity to switch between all of the main characters seems like a massive blunder. As with Spiderman, the fighting gets repetitive, so if you had the ability to fight the goons as Drax, for example, it would have kept things fresher through the game. This might be the glitchiest game Ive ever played too, which in 2021 is surely not acceptable. Im playing it on the Xbox One, so I assume there isn't much attention being put into this version of the game, which results in really poor graphics at some points, the dialogue stopping midway through a conversation, characters merging into each other, lots of lag, and an insanely long loading time to reload a checkpoint after you die. I guess this is just the way it is now for all big games on the Xbox One. All of the upgrades you can do are all fairly underwhelming too, and not as good as the ones in the Spiderman game.

I've been playing this on PS5 after it got a pretty enthusiastic response.  I have found it to be very glitchy as well. There has been several times where I finish a fight and for whatever reason it doesn't trigger that I have cleared the area. It leaves me trapped in that part of the map with all the characters just repeating battle dialogue even though absolutely nothing is happening. I've also had quite a few occasions where I've just been trapped in the scenery or fallen through the sky into infinity and had to restart.

Even when it does run well, I don't think its a very good game. There are very long sections where you are just walking slowly listening to dialogue and occasionally pressing square to contribute something to the conversation. The combat is ok but you're pretty much just waiting on various meters to fill up to do special moves, command the rest of the team etc. It's like a much less good version of the FFVII remake combat in some ways.

I cant really understand why it was warmly received. I can only assume people love these characters so really, really wanted to like this game.

I've not heard The Darkness in years, but a mate has just sent me "Welcome tae Glasgae". It's very bad.

I was also sent this today and its absolutely fucking awful.

"Glasgae"? Who even says that? ITS GLESGA!

  5. What are peoples games of the year at this point? I think I've played about everything new that I want to play with the exception of Halo Infinite. I've played a few online matches and it's got me even more hyped for the campaign.

I had a look at this list to refresh my memory a bit. Quite striking how many of these are enhanced editions, remakes, collections etc. That being said, I still think that there has been some quality stuff regardless of your chosen platform.

I think I would personally say that my top tier would be Deathloop (PS5) and Psychonauts 2 (Series X/S). I really loved both of those games.

I'm currently playing a lot of Forza 5 which is way up there too.

  6. I'm convinced that having a PS5 as your 'main' system but an Xbox Series S with Game Pass for Microsoft first party games is the load out of champions right now (if you can find a PS5 and also fart out another £250 on a Series S)

  7. I wouldnt mind Diaz fighting Chimaev and then bouncing.

His fights are entertaining more often than not but its a bit tiresome when his name is inserted into every conversation at Welterweight. I know its star driven but he has two wins at 170 in ten years! Both against guys who have fought at 145.

I'm way more entertained by the sport when watching guys on the up / peaking like Usman, Yan, Makachev, Gane etc. than headlines being dominated by potential Diaz and McGregor fights.

  8. He's been vocal about wanting a slow build but even with that in mind this is a bit of a head scratcher.

Hes 3-0 at #8 and now fighting a guy coming off two losses? If he's gonna fight people ranked lower then I would have preferred something fun like Tuivasa.*

*Scratch that. Just checked and Tuivasa, Hardy, Sakai, Daukaus, Olinyk etc. all have bookings. Not a lot else out there at HW.

  9. Duncan seems pretty well rounded from what I have seen. Heavy hands and nasty ground and pound.

He got majorly fucked over because he did his full weight cut 2 weeks ago, his original opponent missed weight and then pulled out the day of the fight with a sore tummy. Looks like he has stayed in Vegas and done the weight cut again for this opportunity. Interesting to see if that has any impact.

Some of these DWCS have more interesting matches than a lot of recent fight nights but then again I would rather see prospects than the likes of say...Sam Alvey.

I’ll definitely be booting up the Xbox to check out their back catalogue. It also has the title of being the first first person game that doesn’t at all make me dizzy and want to vomit after more than an hour.

I think they recently got an FPS boost if you are on Series S or X so they will be buttery smooth.

It’s really fucking good. I’ve only collected two slabs so far but it’s the sort of game I love to bang my head against a brick wall to instead of searching out the easier solution. I spent a good hour trying to get to Frank at his place in the morning, basically brute forced it with the turrets doing all my dirty work and finally getting to him, killing him and realising

      Reveal hidden contents

NO FUCKING SLABS IN FRANK’s PLACE!

Had a great time doing it though.

From what I could gather, a lot of the missions where you need to kill a target have brute force or more interesting / stealth options.

    Spoiler

For example, there's a mission where you need to infiltrate a party and kill a target. Everyone at the party is wearing a fox mask so you cant identify the person. You can sneak in and find a synthesiser on the balcony playing music. If you listen to the people on the dancefloors conversation, they mention your target writing new music "on the shitter" every morning.

You can then go to his private bathroom and there's notes and a synth machine in there too.

You can then go play the music he wrote through the dancefloor synthesiser and your target will big himself up and start doing a solo dance routine allowing you to just take him out.

Despite that being very convoluted, its not even the only way. There's another way involving going into the basement and tampering with the beer supply.

  12. Finished Deathloop last night. WHAT A GAME. Really loved it from start to finish. Once all the different threads start to weave together you get a real sense of how smart and intricate the design of the story is. There's a hell of a lot of replay value too as many of the more crucial missions have several different ways to complete them. There's also a lot of different load outs to fuck around with.

I've started Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut now. I already finished this on PS4 and it's probably my favourite game of that whole generation so I had no problem double dipping on this one. I feel sorry for my girlfriend right now as she's often sitting working from her laptop and putting up with me going "look how beautiful this game is!" and demanding she joins me in marvelling at the graphics.

Starting to get very, very hyped for Metroid Dread now. Wish they had dropped Fusion and Zero Mission onto the e-shop in advance of this though.

  13. Possibly the two best live matches I have ever seen involved a 50 year old.

Minoru Suzuki had just turned 50 about a week before beating Tomohiro Ishii for the British Heavyweight Championship at NJPW Strong Style Evolved Manchester in 2018 in an absolutely outrageous match. His match with Okada at Royal Quest in London the next year was even better.

He's one of those wrestlers who is brilliant on screen but get a whole new appreciation for him if you ever get the chance to see him up close. Such a master.

  14. Finally, finally, finally BY GOD FINALLY got a PS5 on Friday.

The only game I picked up so far is Deathloop which I am really, really enjoying so far. I was worried it would be overly complicated and maybe even a bit repetitive as it initially seems confined to 4 stages. The way it works with the 4 different times of day per stage changes each area drastically though. Plus you are always opening up more and more parts of each area each time you return.

Looks amazing, the actual gameplay is very satisfying, the haptic feedback works so well and the voice acting is excellent.

I can see me finishing it over the next few days and then I am going to attempt to tackle Demon's Souls.
