Well, I guess the purpose of this thread worked in this instance.

I do occasionally pop in to read the comments Jim in the MMA forum but having our 3rd child just put a spanner in the works to any spare bit of time I had to post. Or maybe it's just melting my mind where I can barely muster any original thought!

Maybe one day when sleep returns to somewhat of a normal thing I'll start posting again.

But I do still read the forum which is good thing at least.

  2. Put me down for one that actually really enjoyed Justice League. I went in with pretty low expectations but I have to admit, I honestly preferred it to Thor Ragnorok.

It certainly had it's faults as people have mentioned, but it was fun and whilst at first I wasn't sure about the dynamic of the main cast members, by the end they all grew on me and it really did feel like a team.

I really do love Affleck's batman though, although not so much his Bruce Wayne if that makes any sense? I would say he's my favourite Batman by a long way in fact, especially the look, the way he moves and talks too.

    Now, onto The Punisher!

If he does get a suspension though, that a lot of the main state athletic commissions in the U.S decide to uphold, then we could well see a Croke park event next year if the UFC are desperate enough to need him to fight.

There's no way the ufc will put on an event with a suspended fighter considering those commissions overlook 99% of their business.

Personally, i can't stomach the guy now. I've been a huge fan of his and a big defender of his too in recent times, but this on top of Poland is indefensible.

He's just a brainless idiot it now seems.

  4. @chokeout I don't need to put this in spoiler tags, but yes, that sequence was still in the film, so it must have been when you went out for a piss.

What was off putting for me, was Cate Blanchett's bizarrelly CGI'd mouth during a particular sequence and then there was her voice that was obviously dubbed over post production. Found it nearly as off putting a Jodie Foster's dubbing in Elysium.

The next Terminator film is not only set to have Cameron back directing and Arnie looking huge, but Linda Hamilton has agreed to star in it too.

I just hope they/we can all just agree to be adults and ignore everything post-T2.

Sadly CB, Cameron isn't directing. It's Tim Miller (Deadpool) is directing. I'm guessing Cameron is producing and one of the articles said he was writing it too.

  6. You may be right David, Jones may have used the drug the make weight, but if that is the case, he's obviously coming into the fight with a huge advantage. If Jones never had to go through the hell to make weight, he's arguably coming into that fight a shit load fresher than a Cormier who's had to go through the normal grueling way to make weight.

You specify that the drug wouldn't have made a difference to a head kick that Jones delivered, but who's to say the guy wouldn't have been too knackered to deliver that kick come the second round if he had to cut weight by traditional ways.

There's no doubt as it's well documented that a draining weight cut can have a major impact on a fighter's cardio, and with the pace of that first round, a Jones who hasn't cheated, could be far more suspect to a takedown or less able to land a head kick.

Jones cheated, and for me, that's going to be far more of a blemish on his career than losses for DC against Jones. DC knows that the guy cheated to fight him, and absolutely nothing will change that now.

  7. I got around to watching Dunkirk on IMAX last night whilst it was very good, I found it had the same problems as interstellar in that half the time I couldn't hear a single thing the actors were saying. Zimmer's chest ripping score just drowned out the majority of the dialogue.

After looking into it further it seems that it wasn't just my screening either:-

Something tells me Nolan doesn't give a fuck, but I hope next time around he sorts it out as it took away from the experience somewhat.

  8. What I found odd was GSP phoning into Bisping's podcast and hearing them both having a normal conversation acting all buddy buddy. It felt like they shit away the final interest anyone has in the fight.

  9. Continuing on from above really, watched Homecoming Monday night and thought it was excellent. There were a few things that didn't sit right with me like the techy suit. It felt a bit too OTT for me, but aside from that Tom Holland was brilliant as Peter Parker.

Not to drag out the already stated, but it really did feel like half a John Hughes film, which was probably why I loved it. I certainly enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than any other comic book flick this year.

In relation to Spider-man 2, it's a tricky one. Each have their own merits and it depends on how you view it. If you asked me which one blew me away more on first viewing in the cinema, I would have to say Spidey 2. I remember walking out of that one completely gobsmacked and even to this day I've not had such a high after viewing a comic book film.

However, Homecoming as someone already mentioned has the difficult task of coming after several other spider-man films and on top of that an endless amount of other films of this genre.

Nice one, HG. Exactly what I was after.

Whilst not essential, the Netflix shows take place after the first Avengers film as they occasionally refer to events from that movie with it being in New York.

For me, I would say you really should watch them all (the movies anyway). Whilst not essential as HG mentioned, they do include chunks of little nuggets that flesh out the backstory of things to come.

I just had a look at Askren's record there and he seems pretty inactive. Is this down to injuries, contract negotiations, or something else? I've never seen him fight but hopefully one of you good souls can fill in the blanks with this.

Just a mix of combinations really. Some contracts negotiations, some injuries, some where it's simply a lack of challengers.

That said, there's never a year gone by where he hasn't competed.

    Fair enough.

So Askren's a percentage player - basically the MMA equivalent of Steve Davis.

Apologies for the double post. I think even saying he's a percentage player isn't fair to Askren. He's just got a skill and style that's just that good not many can really work it out.

As Egg mentioned, he's actually finishing an awful lot of fights now.

He's breezing through these guys he's fighting but who really gives a fuck? If he's happy doing that and making that easy coin more power to him, but for someone who's been involved with high level competition nearly all his life, I can see him looking back and wondering what if when he's all old, fat and retired. Granted it's not 100% down to him why he's not in the UFC, but his fuck you attitude certainly doesn't help his cause.

I don't think that's fair at all Wand. From what I've read and heard, it's all on Dana. Yes, Askren didn't go about things the right way when he ran his mouth, but it was all down to frustration after dealing with White.

Dana behaved like a cock when it came to handling Askren during the negotiations.

With regards to your McGregor point, I was under the impression that he kind of answered the wrestling question a little when he defeated Chad Mendes. Please correct me if that impression is mistaken, though.

As to the Khabib thing - possibly, it's likely that his dominance in his previous matches has maybe flattered to deceive. He does seem like an absolute beast. Has he faced anyone significantly bigger than him yet?

This isn't anything to do with Mcgregor's defence, it's just Askren is just a wrestling machine with a style that really is difficult to compare to any other fighter.

For me he beats Woodley and even Maia  too as his style is just that bizarre.

If Askren does go the UFC, he should see if he can cut to 155lbs because he's a very small welterweight. I can't think of a single welterweight in the UFC that Askren wouldn't be giving up significant size to.

Agree with you on this. Askren has always carried around a bit of puppy fat shall we say, and is definitely smaller in comparison to some other welterweights. That said, I'm not 100% sure he could get down to that weight but I would be interested to see him give it a try.

If he could, I could legitimately see him holding belts at 170 and 155.

I don't know if I want to see McGregor vs. Askren, but I I know what to see all the smack talk that would lead up to it.

Agreed again. The build up would be great, but I can't see Mcgregor being able to stop Askren taking him to the mat and holding him there for the duration.

    9 minutes ago, Carbomb said:

Ooh, I'd like to see that. Although I think Khabib would probably win.

I'm not so sure about that one Carbomb. I can't see many if any of the current 55'ers beating Askren if he was able to make that weight. In fact I don't see many beating him at 170. He's that dominant.

It really is disappointing not seeing the guy in the UFC.

    any thoughts on Daley/MacDonald?

i can't see Rory even entertaining the thought of getting into another Robbie Lawler-esque war so i see him attempting to drag this to the ground. Would be a tad disappointing if Daley is dominated like that but that's how i see it going.

It's how I see it going too. Rory is massive compared to Daley who for me looks more like a lightweight by today's standards. I see him being taken down at will, but you certainly can't count Daley out.

With Dana White no longer in quite the same level of power as previously in the UFC under the new owners, what do we reckon are the chances of Daley getting another shot in the UFC at some stage?

Who knows, but I would to see him back in the UFC. What he did wasn't even that bad. Mistakes happen in the heat of the moment.

  17. Unfortunately these cinema chains are justified charging what they do for food and drink. They make very little from the actual price of the cinema ticket.

So next time you see those families paying over the odds for a tub of popcorn and an ice cream, be thankful they are as it's them who's keeping the company in business in order to screen the films you are watching.

I watched Covenant before I'd finished Prometheus.  They recap enough in Covenant to not make it essential to have seen Prometheus, but obviously it doesn't hurt.

The bonus of not seeing Prometheus is you don't have to be subjected to Idris Elba's comedy accent.

Horses for courses and all that crap, but not seeing the full extent of David's actions in Prometheus and seeing what he did to Shaw's partner to create the chaos in the first place (as this bit isn't alluded to in covenant) won't create the full picture at all for the viewer.

Whilst you're right you could plug the holes somewhat to make it coherent viewing, it's only half the story.

Not essential, but wouldn't do any harm to have seen it

I'm not quite sure how you think this? It's without doubt absolutely essential to watch prometheus before this as you wouldn't have a clue about The Engineers, their involvement in creation, David, Elizabeth Shaw and Weiland's motives.

Alien Covenant is a direct sequal to prometheus in the end.

He was outsized by everyone at lightweight and beat them all with the exception of Henderson (I thought he won the second fight too).

MMA maths doesn't always work but imagine what Edgar would do to Bruce Leeroy - it certainly wouldn't be a split decision.

Edgar was smaller at lightweight yes, but for starters he was at his peak then. Whilst winning he was battered from pillar to post during his lightweight run and he's now 35 years old and probably held together with duct tape.

Now i'm not saying he's definitely losing here, as I'm uncertain still, but I've just got a feeling this is going to be Rodriguez's big introduction to the fans.

  21. Yep. Just looking at the odds on Ladbrokes I'm shocked both Maia and Alvarez are (very) slight underdogs, in particular Maia.

However I put in the 211 thread just how shocked I was with the size disparity between Edgar and Rodriguez during the staredowns. I have a bad feeling for Edgar that he's being lit up here.

Gone for a long shot. Went in ladbrokes and threw an odd £2.20 in the machine (handy them things) and gone for.

JDS, Branch, Maia, Joanna, Vick & Rodriguez.

Returns £122. 4 underdogs in there and not necessarily who i think will win but its a decent return. Lots of close fights on this card.

I tell you what, that's a great shout Egg. Any of those fights could go your way. May have to pop into ladbrokes on my way home now.
