Nathan Fielder's stuff is unapproachable to me because I can't do cringe comedy at all. Is Benny Safdie's acting completely shit or only slightly shit in this?

You should watch it man, it's remarkable and it's quite tense and awkward but it's really not a cringe comedy, it's way more subtle and cinematic than that.

The movie or my comment, because there is a strong argument for both, but I’ll update that.

@Bellenda Carlisle have you seen the more recent 3 Stooges with Will Sasso? Thought it was an interesting film which didn’t miss as much as I expected.

Yeah but I would have preferred it with Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Jim Carrey like was apparently in development for years before it became that.

  3. no spoilers

    Cinema

Night Swim (deseeeerves a quiet night.) I really enjoyed this, rare that I find a horror film scary (even jumped at a jump scare), helped by the also rare occurence that I liked the protagonists enough that I didn't want anything bad to happen to them.

The Boy and the Heron this was weird even for me, it was lovely though. I thought it was going to be a realistic Kes type story about a boy befriending a heron, it was not. Wish more western animation was like this, not all Pixar type stuff.

Poor Things I've wanted to see this for so long and it was basically everything i expected and wanted from it. Possibly more sex than it needed which is something you will probably never hear me say before or again. Emma Stone was brillant as always. Mark Ruffalo was absolutely terrible in it but I still loved the movie

Priscilla not a fan of Sofia Coppola normally but her dreamy feminine style really made this. Thought it was going to be heavy handed but it was really well done and I enjoyed it way more than i expected. Great soundrack, Elordi only looked anything like Elvis when shot in profile but I liked his performance. Don't expect any scenes of the making of naked gun

The Beekeper really fun, I've always liked a straightforward mid budget action film no matter the decade. Statham shockingly plays a no nonsense badass out for revenge. Stath is possibly his most OP ever and batters a john wick amount of people.

Wonka I didn't love it, i appreciated the timeless fantastical vibe. Timmee was fine, I liked the big henchman boarding house dude. I thought the girl was in it too much, would have preferred the Oompa Loompa in the main sidekick role, he was the best thing in it.

Random thing I had on my hard drive for ages

The Three Stooges (2000 biopic) Mel Gibson produced cheap TV movie about the 3 stooges, when it was good it was interesting but some parts were inaccurate and the last half was so rushed it was wild, needed another 20 minutes and less of the poinless bookend segments. Michael (Vic Mackey) Chiklis as Curly was the highlight.

He's overpowered as fuck! I really liked the first season. I'm waiting until it's all out before I start S2, glad to hear it's still good.

I think like season 2 more, it's the perfect amount engrossing but breezy action packed watch that doesn't try to be overly complex, plus it has the T-1000 in it.

  5. Been catching up on Reacher S2, I'm really enjoying it. Jack Reacher is the ultimate Mary Sue for men, it's hilarious, one step away from an action movie satire.

He can do anything, he's a 6'5 jacked cool badass who's a man of few words but also cracks wise in deadly situations and corrects peoples French. He's a stoic action man loner but also a handsome shagger who knows all about Talking Heads. Every bit of detective work he does is easy and convenient for him and nothing fazes him

It's an easy watch and Alan Ritchson is perfect in it, he was my fave in a shit superhero show I used to watch. I always thought he deserved more and was happy to see him get the perfect vehicle for himself.

I liked the miniseries but hated the first proper film and never bothered with the next two. Great casts though.

You'd probably hate part 2 if you didn't like the first one. I'd definitely reccomend the documentary if you liked the 1990 one though.

  7. I think Stephen King's IT is great and I rewatched IT (2017), IT chapter 2 then IT the 1990 miniseries as well as a 2021 documentary I hadn't seen before about the making of the miniseries called Pennywise the story of IT

Watching both modern movies one after the other clocked in at over 5 hours and I got really into them, it was probably the most I've ever enjoyed them. I remember thinking part 1 was a bit better than part 2 when i first saw them but this time I was really feeling both parts as a complete story.

Considering the miniseries was made 30 years earlier, for a budget 10 times smaller than the films and with the limitations of what they could show on TV, it's remarkable how similar both adaptations are.

As well as both adaptations doing a great job of getting the epic story and all the characters' personalities and stories across thanks to their bumper runtimes, the highlights of both are the Pennywise and child actor performances. Bill Skarsgard and Tim Curry are both iconic as Pennywise and different enough in their look and delivery for both to be worthwhile. When I was watching the modern ones I was thinking it's probably one of the best groups of kids ever in a film and their connection as kids and adults was really convincing. I was then impressed to be reminded that the 1990 kids were also fantastic despite having slightly less time to get everything across. Jonathan Brandis was especially good, so sad what happened with him, he was a really talented kid.

The documentary is great, it's over 2 hours long and really in depth featuring nearly everyone involved with the series (including Tim Curry). There was tons of interesting behind the scenes footage and stories about the making of, including the reveal that the spider monster was actually an incredible prop in real life, it's a shame they couldn't quite get that across onscreen.

I might listen to audiobook next, it's 44 hours long!

  8. Arnold Schwarzenegger springs to mind for childhood hero reasons.

Loads of more obscure ones but I'm still mourning PeeWee Herman and don't feel like making a mental list of the niche people I fanboy over and imagining them dying.

If Britney Spears died some tragic tortured Marilyn Monroe or Judy Garland style death it would be sad and also ruin my plans for her to take me to some private island and retire from the public eye while I worship her 24/7

  9. Love Popstar, pains me to say this as a weird al fan since childhood but I think a good 4 of the 10 funniest songs of all time are on that soundtack. Mona Lisa was my most listened to song of the year this year on Spotify. (Even got a video from them on it thanking me for the listens)

Will Ferrell. I often wonder how good Step Brothers would be if he wasn't in it, it's already still very funny but almost entirely because of John C. Reilly.

I don't mind Ferrell but the funniest bit doesn't have either of them in it

❤ Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn is great in this film too.

Also will throw in the second Austin Powers film with the proviso that I have a shit taste in films.

Nonsense, Austin Powers 2 is brilliant, definitely one of my absolute favourite comedies ever, love the first one too.

All the best ones have been mentioned already but I will say my favourite Adam Sandler film was always Billy Madison and I think MacGruber is the most underrated comedy ever and I love it so much I can't not mention it.

  12. Not gonna list everything but I watch most films I'm remotely interested in at the cinema and these were my faves of the year

    1) Beau is Afraid (the one film I couldn't stop thinking about and telling people to watch)

    2) Renfield

    3) Dream Scenario (2 nic cage films in top 3!)

Honourable mentions to; Godzilla minus one, Asteroid City, Barbie, M3gan, 65, john wick 4, Polite Society, guardians of the galaxy 3 (the only great superhero film for years), the creator, joy Ride

    Least favourite

Oppenheimer, Anatomy of a Fall, Freelance

I have a feeling I'll really like Poor Things but I haven't seen it as it's not had a wide release yet.

The whole show is sublime but the pure joy the whole band has watching the keyboard solo at 47:30 almost single handedly made me a fan of the entire genre of Japanese Fusion Jazz.

This is incredible! Best thing I've watched for ages. Just finished it and loved it, nice one.

Is it just a massive bit of halloumi?

I asked the guy and he said it's their own mix of halloumi, cheddar and swiss raclette cheese which sounds pretty cool.

  15. Sympathy for the Devil D-mal approved recent Nicolas Cage thriller. Nic was absolutely sublime in this, proper wild Nic on classic form, reminded me how much I love watching him do his thing. I could watch him do that for hours but the film was a pleasing 1hr25 long and a fun tense watch (although I agree they could have explained and tightened up the denouement a bit more)

Quiz Lady I really enjoyed this and laughed out loud plenty, so glad comedies have had a bit of a comeback. Apparently lots of people find her annoying but I've really liked Awkwafina in everything I've seen her in (and she could go in the pleasing to listen to thread). Sandra Oh was really fun as well and they had great chemistry, Will Ferrell was perfect in his small warm role.

    Spoiler

And the unexpected cameo of my all time favourite celebrity in his final role (😭) after the film's emotional climax really tugged at my heartstrings.

  16. Popeye (the Robin Williams one). This is such a weird film, it looks amazing, the cast are great and it has a unique vibe that really makes it feel like a comic/cartoon and like it's set in its own little world. Unfortunately it's soooo meandering, it's like they dressed everyone up as Popeye characters dropped them in a lovely Popeye town then just told them do do Popeye stuff with no editing or quality control. Likewise the songs are the least catchy songs I've ever heard in a musical, just so aimless and droning. One of the few films I'd reccomend watching in the background as opposed to paying close attention to.

I've said it before but I think Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl is the best casting of an existing character of all time, she looks like she stepped straight out of the cartoon. The only one i find comparably good is Gerard Depardieu as Obelix (where else are you gonna find a big fat famous French actor with a cartoon big nose).
