Godzilla Minus 1 - the hype is real. Absolutely blown away by it, possibly my film of the year.

I just saw this and I thought it was fucking amazing as well. Not much you can say about it cos it's such a classic Godzilla film but it is like the perfect Godzilla film. 10/10

Any chance that he could be a Marvel villain? The Sonic films aren't that old. I guess he's in a position where he can pick and choose what he wants to do.

I really doubt he'd be intetested. I think Sonic is his version of that kind of thing and from everything he's said he's done with that kind of role. I loved him in his small role in kick ass 2.

I'm really relieved to hear that. He does come across well. Steve-O has such a weird voice; I don't think I'll ever get used to it.

He's the worst person to have a podcast, his voice is horrible to listen to

It feels like we are losing all of the legends of classic era 2000AD.

    Ian Gibson aged 77.

It's absolutely gutting how many of my favourite comic creators have died in the last few years. I loved Gibson's run on Mister Miracle. R.I.P

    Someone protect Brian Bolland

  5. There was a persistent rumour for ages that Frankie Muniz was was a tragic figure now with some kind of memory/brain issue that was usually described by saying he couldn't even remember being on Malcolm in the middle. I saw him interviewed by Steve o a year or so  back and they asked him about it and he casually said it wasn't true and something about how he actually said once that he was so young and there was so much going on so fast that it was all a blur and people took it out of context and ran with it. It was a funny non dramaric climax and also a relief to just hear him say nah I'm actually fine.

Edit: here's a vid if you wanna hear it from the horse's mouth. I remember him coming across as really likeable.

It's so shit isn't it? Most overhyped film ever, boring as fuck and me and everyone I know didn't even enjoy the one bomb scene. The only thing i enjoyed was florence pugh's tits.

Have you seen the documentary? I really don't buy into method acting to that degree, but it's fascinating.

And by fascinating, I mean, torture for the people around Jim at the time.

Having said that, love the film, love Jim. I get a bit sad seeing him now, he seems...not altogether with us. I even found it hard watching the Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee with him.

Yeah, that documentary was great  I've heard Jerry Lawler talking about the making of a few times and he really put Jim's nonsense into perspective. Jerry is like "Jim knew me and Andy Kaufman were rivals so he made my life hell on set, Jim needs to understand that me and Andy were friends and working together on everything".

Jim not understanding kayfabe to the person that was actually really there makes me cringe laugh everytime, no wonder Jerry hated him. Jim certainly does come across a bit weird these days but I think he's fascinating and i do hope he acts again.

  7. See if you can spot the subtle connection between these films I  rewatched over the last couple of weeks...

The Truman Show I Haven't seen this for years, it's so lovely, I was struck by how restrained it was, it doesn't over explain anything including the ending which is allowed to be beautiful and inspiring in a vague yet powerful way.

Man on the moon  I've always liked this, I think it might fancy itself a bit more arty and meta than it is but it's still a great 90s biopic. Jim obviously does a wonderful job as Andy Kaufman even if looking back on it he was a bit over the top about channeling Andy to get that performance.

Cable Guy I've said it on here before but ridiculously it's possibly my fave performance ever and one of my all time favourite films too. I remember when it came out and it was the first thing Jim did that messed with his formula by going darker, people didn't know what to think at the time. I don't know if people changed their opinion on it over time but for me this is Jim's masterpiece.

Dumb And Dumber To This was sooo much better than I remember, I was laughing all the way through and now I think it wass probably misjudged when it came out. Jim was close to being on perfect 90s form and it feels like the same universe, and style as the first one which is what you want from it. I liked the daughter character too.

I love you Philip Morris This was ok, the best thing about it is that it exists as another film you can watch with Jim in the lead. It does have its moments and Jim being a crooked gay schemer in love is something a bit different for him at least. Ewan McGregor is SO bad in this, I'm not one to think everyone playing a character in a film needs to be that exact character in real life but I probably would have cast someone gay in Ewan's role here as he's extremely camp acting and Jim was already a straight guy acting gay in it.

Fun with Dick and Jane I hardly remembered this one, Jim and Téa Leoni turn to a life of crime when their comfortable life falls apart. It wasn't bad and had a few good laughs and scenes but always felt a bit B level, could have been a lot more fun with that premise.

Mr Poppers Penguins This is the only one I hadn't seen already, I love animals and kids films but this was a pretty bland family film and Jim wasn't really bringing it, could have been anyone in that role. Bonus points for having Carla Gugino in it.

Me myself & Irene I have a more difficult relationship with this film than any other on the list. I like the concept and loads of the jokes, but (and it pains me to say this) I just don't love the characterization Jim created for the psycho cop persona. Jim plays it as an over the top quiet cool Clint Eastwood parody and it doesn't always land for me, I get what he was going for but I think it would work better if he was more aggressive and shouty or something. Having said that, while watching all these films the bit that made me laugh most out of any of them was the breastfeeding scene in this, absolutely outrageous and Jim's face in it kills me.

Sonic 2  I love the Sonic movies despite not even being into the games as a kid, Jim is seriously on form in these. Sonic 2 is the most "Jim Carrey classic schtick" he has done in 20 years and for me at least he absolutely kills it. If he really is retired from this kind of thing then Sonic 2 is the perfect send off, I love him in it.

There was a discussion on here a while back about actors and directors that had great runs of films. I think its absolutely insane that Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber were Jim's first 3 lead roles and all came out in 1994, how is that even possible?

Is Jim one of the greats or just another comedy actor who also tried a few dramas? For me personally it's the former.

  8. I think 90%* of own brand diet soft drinks are disgusting and taste like straight aspartame, the morrisons fake coke zero actually isn't bad at all though. I'm addicted to coke zero but on a bit of a budget and wasn't feeling a 2 litre being nearly 3 quid now so i tried the morrisons one and it's definitely the best I've ever had.

    * I did like Aldi's amazingly named DR Pepper clone Professor Peppy but that is gone, presumably for being so flagrant

  9. Killers of the flower moon

I saw this at the cinema which I feel the need to point out as it's out to pirate now and i think watching a film that long at home is a different experience.

It was pretty good. As far as too long films go it was no Zack Snyder's Justice League innit.

I do judge these Oscar type "good films that are made by real masters who make art, not garbage" quite harshly, especially when they are not anything amazing really. I did think it was interesting, high quality, and the casting was great, even the less Important characters really looked and acted the part. I'm glad I saw it but it will be nowhere near my top films of the year or anything.

The next part is mid level spoilers, I've seen worse spoilers in professional reviews but spoilered for people who want to go in totally fresh.

    Spoiler

I know it's not the fault of the film as it's based on a true story but the main characters aren't particularly appealing to watch, Leo being a thicko with alignment to both the heels and faces and mollie being really ill for most of the film. I also think a 4 hour long film should probably actually show you the ending, not move slowly for over 3 hours then at the end just use a bizarre device to just tell you everything that happened. Although i enjoyed the unexpected Jack White.

  10. Belinda at her peak, looking incredible, playing to a massive crowd and throwing out...

Seen her loads of times but will die happy if i can see her with the Go-Go"s after two occasions of having tickets to see them on two different continents a decade apart and them both being cancelled.

Video isn't amazing quality but I've watched it loads of tiimes so it's good enough

I know how it sounds but the IRS years were my favourite, they were unfuckwittable for those five albums. I’d loved to have seen them back then. I used to be obsessed with REM! Still love them now of course.

Green is my fave, green through monster were playing often in my house as a youngster.  And i loved the IRS stuff when I tracked it down a bit later. They were still great til they broke up as well. Amazing band

    REM in 85?  Yes please!

Watching this now, it's sublime. I've seen hundreds of gigs but never seeing R.E.M is one of my only gig regrets.

Edit: the version of "have you ever seen the rain" I just saw them do here can also go on the extremely short list of cover songs that are good.

  13. I hate lists like that, I'd happily never see one again and that one is also shit. At least they placed Enter the Dragon quite high. I've noticed it dropping off in a lot of polls and stuff in the last few years when before it was always correctly regarded as an ultimate classic.

Terminator 1 is better than 2 as well but T2 is still an all timer so it's all good.

  14. I watch lots of gigs on youtube and the like either in the background while I'm drawing or pottering about or alternatively just to immerse myself in a live performance as my entertainment for the evening. I'm always looking for more or ones i wouldn't have thought of and I thought it might make a decent thread (I don't think there's one already). Kind of like a longform live stepchild of the song of the day thread

So here is a place to post gigs from YouTube or whatever. Post whatever gigs or live performances you want in any genre, However i have made some rules of conduct in this thread to retain quality and these must be obeyed or I will beg chest rockwell to suspend you.

Rules are in the spoiler tag

    Spoiler

Strictly 1 gig per poster per day maximum

Nothing filmed on a phone from the crowd, however decent full gig bootlegs are fine if they're watchable (especially if it's something older)

No single live songs, gigs must be at least 3 songs or like 15 minutes or something (on the fence about this one)

Things like tiny desk concerts count, as long as it's a live performance it doesn't have to be in front of a traditional crowd at a venue

Post gigs and/or your own opinions, no articles about gigs or lists of best gigs on YouTube or anything like that.

don't just come here to slag off someone's taste unless you're being really funny about it but discussion about posts is encouraged,

Anyway here's a crowd pleaser, Beastie Boys Live Hello Nasty tour 1999, i saw them on this tour with Jungle Brothers supporting and it was amazing. R.I.P MCA

I'm two episodes into The Curse and loving it.

I love it, I'm so invested now. I'm a die hard Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone fan and I'd watch them do nothing for an hour which it almost is. It's so subtle with constant tension I find it really immersive, I'll be engrossed then find myself laughing out loud at these things that aren't even really jokes but just well done bits of awkward weirdness or dialogue.

Emma Stone is so good in it, absolutely keeping up with Nathan and his vision, her underlying bitchiness under a layer of forced chilled out cool is so well portrayed. I'm also watching new Frasier which is fine but it really highlights the difference in styles when I watch Frasier cramming these old fashioned big sitcom jokes and wacky situations into 20 minutes, then afterwards watch this hour of subtle droning awkwardness that just makes me uneasy throughout and I still have no idea what it's leading up to. I do think being a Nathan Fielder fan going in probably helps because you know at what level his subversive deadpan comedy is and you're excited to "let him cook" and see what happens.
