Imagine opening your own Subway, McDonalds or simple Burger Shack and paying everyone in ‘handshakes’, ‘opportunities’ and ‘Hotdogs’

Absolutely not a specific to wrestling thing, happens in all fields of entertainment - acting, singing, stand-up comedy and so on all involve a load of unpaid gigs and progression to paid work.

My heart sank when Drew said there are 48 days until Mania. This is the problem with this stuff. There's too much time between Rumble and Mania and everything just spins and spins until they get there.

It's a strange one, that, because for years one of the big moans was that they should go back to 4 PPVs and build to them properly. And yet, when we do get the big gap to build up Mania (at least for the two Rumble winner matches), they don't have the content or the motivation for it.

I don't like the injury angle idea for Drew much - I can see the benefit of it, but they shouldn't be relying on writing the main event hero out of the show to stay fresh in the weeks leading up to the big moment. He was fucked the second he won the Rumble, anyway. Yeah there were a few attempts at "Heyman booked it, Vince wanted Roman to win" but by the Wednesday or Thursday, people were ready to jump on everything he does and hate him. If he did the injury angle, it'd be criticised as a rip off of the boyhood dream storyline, or likened to how Roman was injured in 2014/15 and came back straight into the title picture, or general "ugh Drew's a part timer now." It'd be wrong for some reason or other, as will everything he does from now on.

  3. Announcing that women’s elimination chamber match seems very clunky, considering they already kicked off the Becky-Shayna feud last week. I feel they should either not have booked the foregone-conclusion contender match at all, or waited until the next night for Shayna to do the vampire bite. If they needed a Raw side chamber match, the tag titles would do.

The rot has already set in for Owens and friends vs Rollins and friends. It can’t have been going that long but because it’s the same thing every week, it reminds me of that period during KO’s Universal title run where every Raw for months was headlined by some variation of him and Jericho vs Reigns and Rollins.

I like Angel Garza’s ladies man character, but I’m a bit confused by it. I saw a clip recently of him getting engaged in the ring at NXT, but now he’s all about not being tied down to one woman? Was that just a YouTube off-air exclusive rather than part of the episode?

Fair play to Riddick Moss. I bought a wrestling sticker book about three years ago and he looked like he was about 50 in that, but he seems a lot younger now. I’ll see if I can find the promo picture. Edit: It was a Slam Attax card.

  4. I'm fine with doing one last round of Gargano vs Ciampa - I haven't watched much NXT in their era, so it's not as overdone for me as it is to regular viewers. They really could do with promoting Undisputed Era after WrestleMania, which leaves a pretty big void on NXT, but they've always been good at replenishing the roster. I'd love to see Velveteen Dream dethrone Cole in Tampa.

The big thing for me - this was possibly the first Takeover I've watched on my own in years - was how atrocious Mauro is. He's so much worse than the white noise commentary on the other shows. I don't remember him being so loud and obnoxious when he did SmackDown.

Yeah but they've had five billion meaningless matches on TV more than any team in history which will massively balance it out.

Nah, it only adds to their greatness - New Day have had all those matches and STILL produced a world champion without even splitting up.

  6. I really liked the Broserweights skits as well. It’s strange, I kind of hate them - when they did the in-ring promo the other week, they were both dressed as utter bell ends. And Riddle’s loud stoner frat boy personality ("WEED IS ACE! I'm 34") is almost intolerable at all times... yet it all works so well together. Pete’s look at the camera on the boat cracked me up.

Would love to see them face Moustache Mountain and New Day.

If they're doing everything with Hangman on purpose, it's utter genius. So many little touches, from Omega seemingly avoiding the tag, Page needing a breath and making bad calls, to his isolation backstage, it's subtle where it needs to be and it'll be awesome when they pull the trigger on him. I'm already willing him to believe in himself again.

This was my favourite part of the show. They’ve done a real turnaround with Page, and the first few months of wishy-washy bollocks with him ties into it. He’s got a proper redemption story set up now and it can go either way. Great stuff! But it just further makes me think they've screwed up with Omega. He can’t just do a non-alcoholic version of the same anxiety/comeback thing, so ultimately, Kenny being a failure for the first few months wasn’t necessary.

Perhaps they’ve just pivoted and thought Hangman needs the help more. Regardless, he’s coming off as a focal and highlight of the show now.

I'd accept Owens bringing in Hunter against Seth's group if it meant they finally tied up that Triple-H-hands-Kevin-Owens-the-Universal-Title thing from years ago.

Dunno if you’ve seen it but there’s a Kevin Owens special on the WWE network where he talks about that. He said even though it went absolutely nowhere as a storyline, it meant a lot to him in real life because HHH was the person who signed him and developed him. It was bizarre that they did nothing with it, but it was too nonsensical to make sense of anyway. Kevin Owens was the last person that the established Authority gimmick would see as the marketable top champion.

Tying up the logic of it years later with Hunter as a babyface and Seth as a heel would be even worse than leaving it dead, though, unless they’ve got some ace up their sleeves with the writing. Or actually, I’m up for them just referencing it as a throwaway joke like when Kofi lost his Jamaican accent.

I'm honestly starting to think that we might get a Wrestlemania without self-indulgent Triple H and Shane McMahon matches, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I am very confident there won't be a Shane McMahon match, but I'm still expecting Triple H will be. Seth Rollins and crew need a WrestleMania match, and I can't see another round with Owens, Joe and the Vikings being it. I was expecting Rey Mysterio and Cain Velasquez to be added to the team against them, Rey seems fairly locked with the Mexican upstarts though. So I'm hoping for Owens and three legends being the opposition for the Messiah lot.

That was something that they really got right and I was hoping that was the start of getting Lynch back on track. I'm willing to overlook the slight misfire this week knowing that her work with Shayna should be great. Hopefully.

I'm not sold on them as a combo ever since they were shite at Survivor Series, I wouldn't put that all on Bayley. Prior to that, I'd have been well up for Becky Lynch vs Shayna Baszler though, and I'm hoping they do better this time.

Outside of when he beat people up to steal their vehicle, I somewhat assumed things like the beer truck/zomboni, etc, were part of Austin being the 'man of the people' against McMahon. Like, McMahon has paid crooked referees and bodyguards, but Austin is able to ask someone "Hey, can I borrow your truck to teach this millionaire asshole a lesson?....and can you show me how the hose on this thing works?"

That’s very good in theory, but Stone Cold was an absolute bullying prick to everyone. Total ASBO case, just giving people hidings for nothing, whether they were wrestlers, production staff, security guards, cops, bystanders, someone’s spouse, his spouse etc. Someone on here just the other day was complaining that babyface characters now are decent human beings, when they should be arseholes like Rock and Austin.

Like rick says, robbing ambulances is an established wrestling trope and crying about the logic of it is the realm of whiney bell-ends who just complain about everything, and they also most likely watch child porn and deserve a painful death - especially when there’s the shite vampire bit to complain about already there. Like BomberPat said, WWE vehicle drama is also an overdone thing and is a bit shit. But like Supremo said, it’s still a step up from the nothing they usually do with The Man.

Although personally, I liked the (broad strokes of the) storyline with her needing to prove herself against Asuka.

  12. Cornette had a massive rant about Meltzer on his podcast this week, as you’d expect. I didn’t listen to it all, but part of it was reading a longish letter out from someone saying he should give Dave a break because of the autism.

    Anyway, unrelated but:

  13. If Goldberg’s doing WrestleMania, I’d expect him to be quickly squashing Bray Wyatt in Saudi. If they’ve got (substantial) Mania plans for him, then knowing how easily he gets injured, I can’t see them having him take bumps and work a proper match a month earlier.

Big Match John announced as returning to Smackdown later this month.

I saw someone on Twitter jokingly suggest a Wrestlemania match of The Rock and Roman Reigns vs. Vin Diesel and John Cena.

I never knew I could want a match so much.

When The Rock and Vin Diesel put on a social media feud a couple of years ago, wasn’t that supposed to build to something in WWE? I don’t remember what came of it now.
