  1. I absolutely loved Gozu. Randomly saw it in the cinema with no idea what it was about and it just blew me away. I'm not generally one for surrealism but Gozu makes very little sense and yet is completely brilliant for reasons that I can never really put my finger on.

I'm with Seven on Old Boy as well. Another one I saw in the cinema without really know anything about it. It really is great though, even without the corridor scene. I'm not sure that, with a film like that, flaws really matter. It's so OTT in places you just accept it and carry on.

I saw at the cinema as well, it was part of a Tartan Asia Extreme season they were doing. I also saw Phone (quality if derivative) and A Tale Of Two Sisters (wonderful) in it.

I don't think I've ever heard a reaction from a cinema audience quite like the one I heard for the ending to Gozu. Nobody knew whether to be disgusted or laugh or what. It reminded me of a David Lynch film really, which is probably why I liked it so much.

  2. Just watched Se7en tonight for the second time. The first time I watched it was about 9 years ago, a few days after some cunt cousin of mine told me the fucking ending. But remarkably for a film that has such a twist ending, it really does reward repeat viewings. And it really is fantastically bleak from start to finish. Ace!

  3. Yes, great bowling from Flintoff but a good team performance - almost everyone chipped in, which was good, and Swann also bowled really well - far better than at Cardiff.

I think England will stay unchanged for the next match barring injuries although I might consider Sidebottom in for Onions for some variety. If Pietersen isn't fit, Bell should come in. I reckon Australia might play 5 bowlers and we might see Lee come in for North.

  4. That's the thing about Cook - he NEVER looks in good nick but he is a real tough nut to crack as long as he doesn't give his wicket away with a horrible waft.

Yes, great start though. You can tell these Aussie bowlers have never played at Lord's, they've been terrible. VERY flat pitch though, England will need 500+, I think.

  5. I personally loved the ending as it only serves to emphasise Sheriff Bell's violent disconnection from a world he no longer understands. But yeah, some early 90's soft-core Hauer flicks are always good.

I dunno, I guess I shouldn't always expect Steve Buscemi shoved in a wood-chipper at the end of a film.

Ever seen Wedlock? That really is a fucking great film.

  6. Just caught up to watching No Country For Old Men. Didn't enjoy the ending at all, not because I didn't understand it (I did) or because it was ambiguous but rather because it was just a bit lightweight considering what went before. Ultimately, it wasn't really close to being one of my favourite Coen Brothers films as it felt a bit like a 'Best Of' their other films (Fargo, Blood Simple and The Man Who Wasn't There especially) but it was a Coen Brothers film and was still great obviously. Javier Bardem scared the crap out of me - amazing performance.

I shouldn't have watched while I have swine flu (or so my wife thinks) though. I should have watched a Rutger Hauer film or something.
