  1. Btw I tried the birthday trick with the restaurant down the way but no free linguini bolognese. Should have gone to the chippy again.
  2. One of them's got Goldberg in it, hasn't it? How have I not seen it yet.
  3. 17yo says no, so do I. Cheers, you two. I watched Nope and ate crap and finally got my ceiling/roof fixed, for anyone who remembers that saga. Or at least I hope it is, we'll see when it pisses down if this is the fifth false dawn.
  4. You might think you're a loyal customer to your local chippy. But I just got a birthday card and a free chip barm off mine.
  5. Maverick was everything that big budget Hollywood filmmaking should be more often. Just an unapologetic feelgood great time at the movies, absolute escapism from a guy who just wants to cheer us up by nearly killing himself. I was really upset I didn't get the chance to see it on IMAX.
  6. I honestly think such a hire could be a huge turning point for AEW in terms of viewership and a more consistent level of product when looked at from a neutral perspective, if there is such a thing in this daft sport. The question is, though - would such a hire damage the type of product that most AEW fans, from what I've seen, seem to like? In a way, AEW distinguishes in a major way from WWE precisely because it's run by a guy who's competely ill-suited to being in charge of a wrestling company - but a guy who's giving his audience what they seem to want. And Chris Jericho. It's an e-fed brought to life. There's never been anything like it on this scale. Even as someone who only watches the PPVs, a big part of me doesn't want him to change anything at the top. The PPVs are fast-moving with a lot of action and a decent range of matches, compared to the WWE's much slower style that allows stuff to breathe. Yet it's looking inevitable that he might have to.
  7. A touching tribute here.
  8. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (cinema) Harmless fan service nonsense. A shame it just went back to New York and shoved the kids into support after at least doing something different with Afterlife. This series has been rudderless since the first one though, what did anybody expect. Infinite (Film 4) I'm glad they didn't release this at the cinema because I'd definitely have gone to see it and I would have been livid. One of those awful films where everybody's forgotten how to act and the director has given up on it halfway through the shoot. Muppets from Space (Film 4) Shame the human cast is full of cunts (Ray Liotta innocent) but this is very funny, it's the Muppets ffs. Beaker will always be the Muppet MVP though. Midnight Special Still excellent. A shame it's become somewhat forgotten but it's easily one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade. Joel Edgerton is great, isn't he? Let's hear it for him. Love that guy. Village of the Damned (1995) One of the very few John Carpenters I hadn't seen and it's perfectly decent. Not a patch on the original (or its sequel) but a good time. The bit with the barbecue is awesome. Inseminoid (Talking Pictures TV) Judy Geeson gets knocked up by an alien so 5 stars obviously. Yannick (Mubi) The latest film by Mr. Oizo, by his standards almost normal but also still hilariously stupid. Like all his films. Raphael Quenard is going to be one of the best actors on the planet, save this tweet. Universal Soldier / Universal Soldier: Regeneration / Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning So for those of you who don't know the chronology of this series, the latter two titles are direct sequels to the first film, both made by John Hyams who recently made the excellent Alone and Sick. His dad, the also great Peter Hyams, was director of photography on them! Anyway, the first one is obviously great but these two are genuinely superb, too. Especially the last one, which is about as weird and risk-taking a DTV action sequel as I've ever seen. I expected nothing and got loads from them both. Snack Shack Coming-of-age comedy that's getting a lot of critical attention. In truth, it's nothing more than alright. You've seen it dozens of times before but it's still funny and an easy watch. Stopmotion Disappointing new British horror, badly paced and acted and a waste of a pretty decent idea. It's about trauma, you know! Starman (Film 4) Possibly John Carpenter's most under-appreciated film after Prince of Darkness? Yes, I think it is.
  9. There are so many things about this that don't make sense to me. But the one I can't stop thinking about is that they are probably using this as a way to bring back and elevate Jack Perry, who is a heel, by showing him being bullied like a babyface by a WWE babyface wrestler who they are trying to paint as the heel, even though he'll be received as a babyface in the company he doesn't work for anymore. It's almost Lynchian.
  10. Easily the most consistently rubbish, bad faith discussion that's had on this forum. Completely pointless, goes absolutely nowhere, constantly derails good debate, never has anything to do with the topic being discussed.

See also Michael Portillo. Train nonce (but not in a good way, like @Fatty Facesitter)

I competely acknowledge this isn't easy. This is a discussion that's been had in both on and off topic on this board in numerous topics and in a lot of cases there are no easy answers, and you can't boycott/stop consuming everything! There are all kinds of reasons why you may be prevented from doing that. Case in point - my 15yo daughter is largely non-communicative autistic and she loves a McDonalds. I don't want to be putting money in their pockets right now but she won't understand the reasons why if I explained them to her. She has her routines and things she needs/likes. There's nothing I can do about that. In your case, I'm assuming you're not tramping round the web and your offline life shouting about being a trans ally, and as you point out this is a topic that hasn't really intersected with your day-to-day life. I'm not expecting you to suddenly boot all your Potter merch and so on into touch just because I made a post on an off-topic board, and I wouldn't ask you to do that. But you're aware and understanding and thinking about the topic in an open-minded and accepting way. Progress of any kind is good and important, because instant change is quite often difficult to achieve in many circumstances.
  13. Very much enjoyed seeing Kerry Howard on House of Games tonight.
  14. @Gooner just turned me into a Liverpool fan. #JusticeForSuarez
  15. I know it's so easy to just use this Twitter account for these now but I haven't stopped laughing at this one since I saw it.

Not at all. I really do understand your concerns and those of anyone else who may feel this way because you're right. There are performative grifters out there and we should be concerned about them as they do set everything back as well as profiting off the back of non-support. I just think we shouldn't use them as a blanket reason to question anyone who calls themselves a supporter of minority rights and lives or an ally. You're one of the really good ones.

I told myself over and over in the last 24 hours or so not to respond to this latest discussion. Perhaps because I'm too close to the subject, even more so with the fallout from the Cass Report over the last day or so, to be able to respond to all this like a rational, non-ranting human being. Additionally because I have a big mouth and I'm not good at keeping it shut and I'm sure I'll regret this post as soon as it's done. But fuck it. I'm so FUCKING tired of this shit. I'm not going to be guilt-tripped into not asking people not to buy a Harry Potter video game because of the repercussions for those who worked on it. And I *will* ask people not to buy it, as I have done on Twitter. I will also say that if you are an adult with your own income choosing to buy that game and it's not for your kids or a gift for a child relative of yours then I am going to tell you that you have no right to call yourself a trans ally or whatever term you're choosing to use, but more on that later. Because you're not. This notion that 'well, Rowling's rich anyway so what difference does it make' is so staggeringly myopic that I can't believe for one second that anyone would truly believe that. Rowling's actually a billionaire, I believe, and maybe the money or royalties that she will obviously get from the game will be a drop in the ocean to her. But do we just give up not putting any more in her pocket just because it 'won't make a difference'? Of course we don't. Because that money could be used to support a game that isn't based on a franchise created by the most prominent fascist transphobes on the planet. (A game, presumably, that will have been worked on by other human beings who need to pay the bills. So by all means tell us that we should buy the new Potter game because of the people who worked on it, but don't conveniently forget that gamers will probably put their money in another corner of the market and help those programmers instead.) Rowling completely dedicates her social media platforms to the demonisation of trans people, particularly trans women. Because let's face it, this mob don't give a shit about trans men and they never enter the discussion. Because they can't continue the paper-thin defence of it all being about 'feminism' when challenged on it. Her voice has undeniably led to unmeasurable amounts of abuse being levelled at trans people. A generation of people who grew up on her books, idolising her, now seeing one of the most important people in their formative years spending thousands of hours of her spare time actively trying to make the lives of people for whom life is usually difficult enough even more miserable. A lot of them will see through it and pull away from her. But many others won't. OK, it may not make a difference to her to not buy the game. But we have to do something! This rhetoric smacks of more or less saying, "Well, boycotts damage people down the food chain and this woman's rich as fuck anyway so let's just crack on as we were, eh?" Absolute fucking horseshit, buck-passing centrism. There's been a discussion about performative allyship and minority support in this thread and there's nothing that falls into that category more than saying that you support trans rights but then saying that it's alright to put more money in JK Rowling's pocket because what difference does it ACTUALLY make anyway. Fuck's sake. The fucking GIDS service just shut down. It's gone. My 17yo has had to join a network of inter-supporting trans teenagers to assist him with his transitioning because of this. He's lucky that he has that network of friends that he trusts (and so do I) but many do not. These events will be one of the most damaging things to happen to trans kids this country has ever seen. I'm too close to all this and too emotive about it, sure. But the state of play is fucking terrible and I'm so scared about what's going to happen to kids now. If you support trans kids, support them. Don't support them with caveats and 'yeah, but alsos'. And it's absolutely fine to call yourself an ally btw! Are there people out there who call themselves such but aren't really or are just saying that for clout? Sure! Some of them are on this board. It's no good calling yourself such a thing and then showing absolutely no hint of actual, meaningful support. It does matter, though. It means the world to my 17yo when I tell him that somebody I know is a supporter or an ally. Keep calling it yourself because those who aren't on the LGBTQ+ spectrum saying "Yeah it's a bit fishy to me this, when someone calls themselves that!"? Their opinions on this don't matter AT ALL. It doesn't affect them. They don't know how much it means. I'm going to hit Submit Reply now and sink into my well of regret. Again. GREAT.
