£50 video game challenge

Monkey Island and Age of Empires were, and still are, my all time favourite games.

 

Just wish I had something to play them on nowadays! The mobile version of AoE is diabolical

I can’t speak for AOE, but you can get Monkey Island for next to nothing on PC or on Xbox - unfortunately, as far as I’m aware, there are no ports to any other modern system. I’m hoping that’ll change in the future - but I’m not holding my breath.

AOE II is free on Gamepass console if you have an Xbox.

I only have a PS4 unfortunately. The only other gaming devices in the house are restricted to sons room and none shall enter said crypt....

I loved it - if you enjoyed the original two Ron Gilbert games, I think you’ll like this. I’m someone who found Curse a bit lacking; even though it’s generally well-regarded. But this felt like the conclusion to the series I’d always wanted. The ending is divisive, but I really liked it. Let me know what you think, if you give it a go.

OK. I had a quick browse of the first few pages of the eShop sales on my Laptop as if you own a game it doesn't show you the price if you're on the eShop on an actual Switch. Here's what I managed for £49.95. If you're getting a Switch for the first time this Christmas this wouldn't be too bad as a starting game library. There's a little bit of everything here.

Lego Marvel Superheroes £3.84

A great Lego game, and some really good value. Nice open world stuff, but also some traditional Lego style levels to trot through as well, and heaps of characters to unlock.

Final Fantasy VII £5.11

A perennial classic. Sure, it may not have the flash of the PS4/5 remakes but it's still a lot of game for a pretty reasonable price, plus it has some quality of life upgrades over the Playstation original.

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection: £8.24

12 Street Fighter games for just over £8. Some of them have online, but Switch's online isn't the best. 

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Enhanced Edition: £7.99

Yes iut's more RPG, but it's very different from Final Fantasy VII

Worms W.M.D. £3.99

Classic Worms action for all the family.

Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons £1.99

A lovely little narrative puzzle game. Each brother is controlled with a different analogue stick.

Saints Row: The Big Purple Package £2.39

Saints Row the Third, and Saints Row 4 with all the DLC for not much more than the price of a McDonald's Double Cheeseburger

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate: £8.99

I have seen that for as good as Monster Hunter World is, Generations on the Switch is the better prospect. This has all the DLC as well.

Golf Story: £2.49

A fun little indie sports game withsome RPG elements. The writing is funny, the golf is surprisingly decent. There's an interesting story.

Limbo 89p

A classic.

Road 96 £.2.54

Procedurally generated Adventure thing with multiple paths and endings. It's a very interesting game.

Steamworld Dig £1.49

A little MetroidVania Searching Adventure action with plenty of charm. 

I thought of popping Duke Nukem 3D (£1.59) and Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All (£2.39) on the list, but I think this is a slightly more rounded collection of games.

I could probably go through and assemble a totally different list another day.

Given that the Steam sale is ongoing, I thought I’d take another stab at this - and hopefully point out some bargains to people along the way:

Blasphemous - £1.99

A Metroidvania Souls-Like which, full disclosure, I’ve not played much of. But for £1.99, it’s worth a punt. 

The Consuming Shadow - 44p

A survival horror rogue-lite by Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Crosshaw of Zero Punctuation/Fully Ramblomatic fame. I’m a little fed up of his ‘every game is shite’ act, but I’ll give this a try for the price it’s at.

Little Nightmares II - £2.49

I liked the original Little Nightmares - a Limbo/Inside-like puzzle platformer that could be genuinely frightening and tense at times. I’ve not played the sequel yet, but at this price, that’ll change soon.

Black Mesa - (£1.67)

I assume you know what this is, but just in case - it’s a fan-made Half-Life remake that was good enough to be approved for commercial release by Valve. It’s amazing to me that fans had the passion to make something this good, with no initial promise of making money from it. At £1.67, it’s a no-brainer.

Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy - £3.49

Three games for much less than the price of one. I already had this game on PS5, but I’ve bought it again to try out the mod support. 

Kerbal Space Program - £2.99

A space flight simulation game that I feel like I should hate, but I found it weirdly enjoyable and endearing in spite of its complexities. Great mod support too.

Beyond Two Souls - £1.69

Another game that I’ve not played, but I enjoyed Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain at the time, and I’m happy enough to give this a try at this low price. 

Assassin’s Creed II Deluxe Edition - £2.14

For many, Assassin’s Creed didn’t get any better than this. For me, it did - Black Flag. But hey, can’t argue with the price here.

Viewfinder - £7.99

Slightly more expensive than the other games I’ve listed, but I kind of know the guy behind this game, and I think it’s great,  so I’m putting it in here. At £7.99, it’s well worth your money.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy - £1.14

I’ve never played this, and all I really know about this game is that it’s notoriously hard and frustrating albeit purposely so. 

Killer7 - £3.87

A cult classic action adventure game that I’ve never played. Time to change that!

A Short Hike - £3.18

One of my favourite indie games ever, and I know I’ve recommended it before. Beautiful and charming, if you’ve never played it, now’s the time.

STEINS;GATE - £2.39

If you don’t like visual novels, steer clear. I liked it enough, and thought it was enjoyable, even if some of the characters were difficult to like.

Grindstone - £2.32

one of my favourite modern puzzle games. It’s great fun and it’s hard not to get addicted to it. I 100% completed this game, I liked it that much.

The Cave - £1.99

A well-written but flawed game by Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame. It’s worth a go at this price.

Kaze and the Wild Masks - £1.91

I’m absolutely astonished by the price of this one - I forked out around £20 for it on first release, which wasn’t too long ago! It’s a fantastic 2D platformer that you’ll particularly enjoy if you liked the Donkey Kong Country games. It’s polished, challenging and fun - and deserves to be better known than it is.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope - £4.79

Gets a bad rap, but it’s a much better game than it’s given credit for. I do enjoy a JRPG, and this is a good one.

Liar’s Bar - £2.94

Another one that I’ve not played, but I’ve kept my eye on it given how much people seem to enjoy it. From what I gather it’s pub games done well - Cheat and a dice game. Only one player avoids a gruesome death. 

TOTAL: £49.42 for 18 (!) games

If you have an Xbox and is handy with VPNd I would recommend going to gamivo plenty of games for a couple of quid.

I bought several of those games in the summer sale, @RedTwoster, and still managed to fail the £50 challenge horribly.
