WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Well, Seven said he may or may not get round to it, and I've listened to a ton of music this year for a change so thought I might try this out. Â I listen to almost all genres of music, though you won't find much (if any) rock and metal on here. I've heard the heavily lauded rock stuff like Arcade Fire and Walkmen but it as usual didn't grab me, and my metal listening constituted a few songs here and there, so apologies to any rockists or metal-heads in advance. The genres range from deep house to chillwave to indie to dream pop to hip hop to chart and everything in between. I'll state what genre each song is vaguely from to give people an idea of whether they want to download it or not. Â Obviously these things are entirely subjective, and if you asked everyone on the board nobody would submit an identical list, but hopefully it creates some good discussion and helps out people who want recommendations from this tear. Â * I will be posting download links for these tracks, but for the purposes of the tape please be aware that these are not my uploads, and I do not in any way condone downloading music illegally.
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 "Drink from the fountain of youth and never age again"  #50   Miami Horror - Sometimes  Genre: Indie/Dance  Great little tune by this Australian pop/dance/indie band. Has fashionably fuzzy synths, a real summery vibe and a great hook, so this is perfect for sitting out in your back garden with a cold drink and feeling fucking awesome about life. It's like the vibe of chillwave mixed with the song structure of indie. Cool artwork, too.   http://www.mediafire.com/?3imkkhzelmz
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 "Turn my swag on"  #49   Willow Smith - Whip My Hair  Genre: Chart/R'n'B  Probably a few raised eyebrows here, for a song that's been described as 'the most annoying track of the year'. But fuck that, once you get past the fact that it's main target audience is nine year old girls, you can see the magic in this track. The beat absolute kills, and Willow at nine years of age has more swagger and charisma than everyone on the X-Factor put together. If nothing else, it shows what happens when your Dad has enough money to hire the best songwriters and producers. Cher Lloyd would suck off several rugby teams to be given a song as good as this. Teen pop has actually been on fire the last couple of years, if you can bring yourself to listen to it.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5mKAgb5px0 http://www.mediafire.com/?16tfkix7xf5hrb2
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 One more for the afternoon...  Dubstep and shit  #48   James Blake - Klavierwerke  Genre: Dubstep  James Blake is easily the best new producer to emerge in any form of dance music this year. This is off his second EP in the space of a few months, but differs from his first in that it's heavily led by piano. Ambient, trippy, soulful, I'd advise everyone to check out the full EP (and everything he's ever done) if they like it.   http://www.mediafire.com/?ldlazra0d7njph6 [Full EP]
Moderators PowerButchi Posted December 11, 2010 Moderators Posted December 11, 2010 One more for the afternoon... Dubstep and shit  #48   James Blake - Klavierwerke  Genre: Dubstep  James Blake is easily the best new producer to emerge in any form of dance music this year. I'd rather listen to Laurie Anderson's "O Superman" on a loop until the end of time than hear that again.
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 Yeah, it's not everyone's cup of tea to be honest, got good reviews though. I personally prefer his stuff like CYMK, but really enjoy Klavierwerke as well. Are you into electronic dance music in general, out of interest? If so, what type of stuff are you into?
Moderators PowerButchi Posted December 11, 2010 Moderators Posted December 11, 2010 I've never really been into anything music wise talking genres in particular, to be honest. Just whatever bends my ear in the right way. Do Kraftwerk count as Electronic Dance Music? I like them. I like a lot of 80's stuff like that, to be honest.
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 Ah, fair enough, it doesn't sound like your sort of thing. Kraftwerk are indeed awesome however, and mostly responsible for a good portion of the electronic music around today. Have you got the remasters? I keep meaning to buy them, but can never justify the expense with so much other vinyl and stuff I want to buy. Is the increased quality worth it?
Moderators PowerButchi Posted December 11, 2010 Moderators Posted December 11, 2010 I haven't no. I do no favours to the music industry with my use of torrents, spotify and filestube.
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 Fair play, you could still download the remasters, although this mostly neglects the point, as even though you'll get the increased clarity etc, you lose so much quality in the rip to a computer. Can't beat hearing music in optimum definition on a top sound system.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted December 11, 2010 Moderators Posted December 11, 2010 Really glad this list ian't going to feature any metal. Look forward to the rundown...
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 "And you're so good for me"  #47   Alexis Jordan - Happiness  Genre: Dance Pop  It doesn't hurt that she's extremely fit, but this is a hell of a pop song. Deadmau5 produced it; he's the next big name dance producer to break through into the pop market I feel, and he does a hell of a job on stuff like this, euphoric dance pop that's understated yet melodic...basically this is kind of a watered down version of the nine minute classic 'I Remember' from last year that he released under his own name. This holds up surprisingly well next to it actually.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oZ-gwpvRoI http://www.4shared.com/audio/xEPIxpFV/Alex...htm?aff=7637829
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 "Being alone's the only way to be"  #46   Janelle Monae - Cold War  Genre: R'n'B  Her album has been kind of marketed as artistic R'n'B, or 'R'n'B with a brain'...it worked, since this features on nearly all year end album lists, from indie rags like NME to more general lists. It's generally considered one of the best efforts of the year, though I think it's a little bit overlong and all over the place stylistically (not necessarily a bad thing). This is one the albums high points, with a great moody melody to begin with leading into an urgent track with her driving vocals coming to the fore. If Beyonce actually released good music, it would probably sound like this song.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6nVCZpgT2s http://www.mediafire.com/?nzgcmynn4e2
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 "If only I could get her out of the picture"  #45   Best Coast - Boyfriend  Genre: Indie  The indie fans have been all over this track (and the band in general) this year, and it's easy to see why. Middle of the road guitars, good hooks, trendy female vocal. It sounds like my idea of hell, yet I can't help liking this, it's just so catchy and almost joyful, despite being about jealousy. It's kind of like the inverse of 'Girlfriend' by Avril Lavigne; this time, the girl has no faith in her ability to wrestle the boy away from her rival, and it's vulnerable and dreamy rather than cocky. At just over two minutes, it's nicely short and sweet.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAM-5fGaHcs http://www.mediafire.com/?nmmjzmoxdim
WU LYF 4 LYF Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 "Just a sweet harmony"  #44   Danny Byrd ft Liquid - Sweet Harmony  Genre: Drum and Bass  Talk about a high octane dancefloor banger. With a gorgeous house piano riff backed by huge drum and bass breakbeats, this is a club tune and a half. Vocal sample is spot on as well.   http://letitbit.net/download/1525508/86239...iquid_.mp3.html
