Drake - Fireworks [Deadboy Slow House Edit]

 

Genre: Deep House

 

This bears little resemblance to the original; the vocals have been manipulated beyond all recognition for a start, and instead of a standard RnB beat with Alicia Keys howling along, we have an atmospheric deep house backing that's clearly influenced by what James Blake has been doing this year. Really intoxicating tune, if you get into it you'll have it on repeat.

Fugative - Bad Girl

 

Genre: House/UK Hip Hop

 

Uk Hip Hop mixed with a dance tune has been a surefire hit for the last eighteen months, so ut was surprising that this barely registered in the charts when it has all the ingredients for a heavy hit; uplifting synths, unthreatening verses, and a diva sample for the hook. The Fugative remix is top draw as well, if you're into wobbly dubstep anyway. Highly enjoyable (if disposable) tune either way.

Freddie Gibbs - National Anthem (Fuck The World)

 

Genre: Hip Hop

 

Deep, dark sounding hip hop record, with an intimidating, compelling flow. If that sounds good, then get downloading, one of the best rap songs of the year no doubt. Bringing back gangster mefioso shit into the genre. This guy deserves to be huge in the next few years. Chorus is a bit shit though, apart from the Pac 'fuck the world' reference.

The Dream - Yamaha

 

Genre: RnB

 

This guy, along with Tricky Stewart, is by a mile the hottest producer of the last few years; people are queuing up to work with him, and he's had hit after hit by artists like Beyonce, Rihanna etc. But if anything, his own music is even better than the shit he writes for others. He has three world class albums, and even the indie publications like Pitchfork are starting to pay attention to his unbelievable talent.

 

This is off his third album Love King from earlier this year, and one of the highlights. Just a fucking awesome pop song, with shades of Prince but with much more modern and glossy production, and a great beat. Pretty joyful, any music fan can enjoy songs like this, sex, good times, women and cars. Fuck yeah.

Genre: Balearic/Dream pop

 

This Swedish duo has been one of my favourite acts of the last eighteen months. They make beautiful, wistful pop music with gorgeous melodies and wonderful vocals. Their album this year wasn't as good as their last, but it still contains many glorious moments, this being one; a cute little Balearic pop song that comes over you like a summer breeze and rewards repeated listening. Great for chilling to, and will be stuck in your head for weeks, any of their songs seem to have hook after hook.

Annie - My Love Is Better

 

Genre: Electro Pop

 

This girl has only released two albums, but both have been 100% pop classics, with brilliant hooks, great production and generally catchy and enjoyable as fuck. Most of her stuff is danceable, but this is at her most cocky, confident, urgent best, one of the best singles of the year. It first appeared in 2008, and was on the album last year, so cheating slightly, but it was released on its own this year for the first time.

A blissful song, with soaring vocals and beautifully melodic backing. The repeat button was intended for stuff like this. Nobody captured this wistful, dreamy sound better than Beach House this year.

I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard those gorgeous opening notes. It's a track to get lost in, with tons of great stuff buried in the mix that you hear on repeated listens. A hypnotic beat in punctuated by dreamy voices and melodies. Fucking awesome.

I find Beach House way too apathetic and fluffy to really get in to. I tried, but it's the sound of a band trying extra hard to sound like they're not trying at all. Nice little run there in between with jj, the always-welcome Annie and that Icarus song is lovely.

 

As for what came before... Drake is alright in small doses and that remix is fun, but yeah this is all way too hip-hop pour moi.

I love that White Hinterland track, it's a shame the rest of the album was nowhere near as good as Icarus. It's nice to see jj on your list, they're one of my favourite bands of the last year or so.
