Kelis - Acapella

Genre: Dance/RnB

To be honest, if there was one artist I didn't expect to be having a big hit in 2010 it was Kelis; her relevance had peaked in 2004, and even then she never got the widespread success she was tipped for. It's a slow burner of a song as well, that doesn't sound especially suited to radio play until a few listens in, so I was amazed to find this near the top of the charts. It's a great song of couse, easily in the top five things David Guetta has ever been involved in, with it's soaring chorus and joyful lyrics merging with his dancefloor credentials.

Robyn - Dancing On My Own

Genre: Dance/RnB

Robyn seems to have been the go-to pop artist for music hipsters for years now, and songs like this make it easy to see why; catchy but artistic, commercial yet emotional, with a great chorus and a healthy dose of the wistful melancholia that she's so good at. One of the best pop singles of the year.

Really glad this list ian't going to feature any metal. Look forward to the rundown...

Amen to that. I like Flaming June's taste in music, so I'm looking forward to the rundown.

Good to see Danny Byrd on here, I just hope his latest track- We Can Have It All- makes this list. It's fucking boss, especially the Sigma remix.

My track of the year is Niton by Prydz. The man is a machine and is seemingly incapable of making a bad track (well, since Call On Me anyway). The original version of Niton of course, not the vocal version.

I'm all for awesome pop songs and not overlooking stuff purely because it's mainstream and aimed at kids, but Whip My Hair is pretty indefensible man.

Each to their own dude, I find it fucking addictive, especially the beat at the start. I really wanted to hate it, but I couldn't.

Yeah, great track, will be appearing shortly. And you're correct in saying that the instrumental version is by far the best, in fact that's the case in most good songs.

Not heard it dude, so it won't make the list, but I'll check it out now.

Magnetic Man - I Need Air

Genre: Drum and Bass

Not usually that into my DnB, but this year has had some heavy tunes. The chords on this in the vocal breakdown are orgasmic, the vocal is just perfect for this sort of thing, and it's never predictable, booming along with twists and turns.

Swedish House Mafia - One

Genre: Trance

I promise there's less chart as we go on...but I couldn't really deny this, the biggest instrumental trance hit in years (probably since ATB's 9PM way back in 1999), and while it's a little euro-dance like and a little bit cheesy, you still can't help loving it when it comes on a dancefloor. That key change in the synths is mega. Everyone will have heard this, even if they don't know the title, euphoric as fuck.

Best Coast - Boyfriend

Genre: Indie

The indie fans have been all over this track (and the band in general) this year, and it's easy to see why. Middle of the road guitars, good hooks, trendy female vocal. It sounds like my idea of hell, yet I can't help liking this, it's just so catchy and almost joyful, despite being about jealousy. It's kind of like the inverse of 'Girlfriend' by Avril Lavigne; this time, the girl has no faith in her ability to wrestle the boy away from her rival, and it's vulnerable and dreamy rather than cocky. At just over two minutes, it's nicely short and sweet.

Good call, this is on the playlist in my work, I keep thinking I'll get sick of the album but I never do. Love 'Crazy For You' and 'Summer Mood' a whole lot too.

I dunno, I think it kind of blurs the lines between the two, hard to put it into a particular genre. When the beat gets going it's definitely Drum and Bass.

Will get a few more done tonight I should think.

Edit: Spinning the YouTube version, I've been playing an unnamed remix which is DnB, but the original is definitely dubstep (with a trancey edge to some of it), need to identify the remix now...

Edit 2: And it's the Digital Soundboy remix

. Better than the original for me, but they're both great.

I just made a Spotify playlist with all of your choices so far -

http://open.spotify.com/user/davidgarlick/...uUcTE4NFLUkK97K

I will listen to this at work tomorrow. I believe it's collaborative playlist which means you should be able to add them yourself if you have spotify Flaming_June.

Oh, and thanks for this, awesome idea. Unfortunately I don't have Spotify, but it would be cool if someone kept it updated.

Glenn Morrison - Triangle & Strings

Genre: Tech House

Tech house seems to have been around forever by now, and this is one of the better tunes to have graced the genre, albeit with trance-esque undertones. I first heard it on Dave Seaman's Lithuania mix; it really stood out in that context, and it grabbed me with it's warm feel and subtle reassuring melodies. If you're into instrumental EDM then you're onto a winner.

Call on Pryda for a good tune

Pryda - Niton

Genre: Funky house

He'll forever be known for 'Call On Me' in the mainstream (that ubiquitous house song with the fitness class video where the instructor looked a bit like Ruud van Nistelrooy). However, he's been churning out house classic after house classic for the last few years; you know the drill here, awesomely catchy and funky piano riff, pounding house beat and louds of shimmering synths to round it off. Awesome little dance tune.
