I still haven’t figured out what the point was. I mean, I know it was the date See No Evil came out but…. I still don’t know what the point of any of it was. Why did real Kane lose for a start?

Fuck knows if it's true but there were rumours at the time that Gallows-Kane was going to become a regular character, with him even possibly being retconned as the REAL Kane, with Jacobs becoming "Jacob Goodnight", his character in See No Evil. Putting him over makes a bit of sense in that context.

Why they had him win only to just abandon the entire thing the next night is another question entirely though.

This is the complete reverse of the current software engineering market. I'm hiring right now and even contacting people after reviewing their CV a lot have already accepted a position elsewhere. If you do get someone in for an interview and you like them then you basically need to make them an offer within a day else they are gone.

I've just had this in this in the care sector.

I applied for a bunch of jobs last Monday. One contacted me Tuesday morning, interviewed me on Thursday and offered me a job on Friday. It was crazily fast. The rest are only just getting back to me now.

I have never ever understood why businesses have such long, drawn out hiring processes. After 3 or 4 rounds, what are you looking for? Honestly.

It quite rightly puts people off, and just maximises the risk of buy back/counter offers. All you need to know is can they actually do the job and culturally would they be the right fit? If it's that difficult for you to do that in one interview, then make the interview slightly longer and include all the major internal colleagues they'll be dealing with.

Or make it quicker. I once had 4 interviews for a process, but it was all done within 4 days. Couldn't meet my manager, so met another Director and he hired me. Streamlined and simple.

The worst I've heard was the mobile phone shop my mate worked at. Hiring was all handled by Head Office who made applicants go through a really lengthy process - including multiple interviews and a 20 minute presentation - for a 15 hour a week sales job. My mate was doing seven day weeks by the time he quit, because no one could be arsed to go through it all.

GP texted me out of the blue with the offer of a Pfizer hit next Friday. The health service here are only on the 50's age bracket on the national jab rollout so I assume it's some sort of mistake on my GP's part seeing as I'm 33 and have no underlying conditions. But will turn up and hope for the best I suppose.

I know a few people that that has happened to. My mate, who is in his thirties got his really early, before they'd even started doing 65s. A guy at work, who is 20, told me he got his first dose during lockdown as well. Neither of them have health conditions so I'm assuming it's just down to how quickly your area is getting through things.

I got the AstraZeneca one on Friday. Bit of a headache and a really sore arm but other than I felt fine.

Vince faking his death was never really executed beyond the limo explosion. Wonder where that would have ended up going if the Benoit craic hadn't occurred.

Apparently the whole thing was designed to establish Mr Kennedy as a Main Eventer.

Triple H and Stephanie would've feuded with Kennedy, Vince's bastard son, for control of the company ending in a Wrestlemania main event that Kennedy would've won, with help from a returning Vince.

Crazy that it ended up being a comedy feud starring Hornswoggle with the pay off being Finlay vs JBL.

  5. Gradual thing for me as well. I remember thinking "well of course they aren't REALLY going to try and hurt each other, because then they'd have no one to wrestle". Very short jump from there to "it's all predetermined".

Weirdly I was more shocked when I realised that the Apter Mags were fake than I was about wrestling itself. I knew they kept kayfabe but I thought the interviews, stories etc, were legit. It wasn't until one of the writers "overheard" Skip and Sunny secretly talking backstage, completely in character, that I realised it was all total bollocks.

  6. I don't have a problem with the QT Marshall storyline as such, except that it involves QT Marshall.

He's solid in the ring and I'm sure he's a good trainer but he isn't over and he isn't going to get over. This push they are giving him would be better off going to someone else. Cody's horrible promo made it obvious that QT is going to snap next week and take Cody out. That would've been a big rub for Penta last week but it won't make a difference to QT at all.

He's a session musician basically. He can play all the right notes but absolutely nobody is paying to see him.

  7. Remember when Cesaro was in the Real Americans and everyone was like “When he ditches Swagger and Zeb, he’s going to be a megastar!!” He won the Andre Battle Royal, split from them, became a “Paul Heyman Guy”and then proceeded to do absolutely fuck all.

Meanwhile Swagger and Zeb turned babyface and actually got really over defending the U.S against Rusev.

Of course Rusev won decisively and moved on to Cena while Swagger and Zeb just completely disappeared.

  8. It's just plastic patriotism. It's easier to bang on about flags and statues than it is to do anything to improve the country in any way, shape or form. Bit like how it is easier to CLAP for the NHS, and talk about how you appreciate it than give staff a decent pay rise and/or effective PPE.

Plus if people are mocking them for flag shagging then they aren't questioning any of the truly awful shit they do. Like Priti Patel's new rules effectively banning Asylum Seekers or Alistair Jack threatening to take the Scottish Government to court over a bill that protects the rights of children in Scotland.

  9. Another weird quirk about the Nasty Boys thing was that some of their pre-taped promos were with the NWA Tag belts, not the WCW ones. The Blondes held both when the promos were filmed, and Knobbs and Sags had obviously just picked up a pair at random. Of course then WCW left the NWA before the promos aired.

So not only were they doing promos as Champions before they won the titles. They were doing it with belts that they never ever won.

Antonio Inoki beat Bob Buckland for the WWF Title in Japan and defended it several times, never lost it but when the tour ended it was just reverted back to Bob and never reported or recognized.

    Not quite.

Backlund DID win the title back but Inoki pulled some classic fuckery. Hisashi Shinma was both New Japan's booker and the WWF's on-screen President and he reversed Backlund's win - because Tiger Jeet Singh interfered - and gave the title back to Inoki. Inoki was obviously too heroic to accept a title in such tainted circumstances so vacated it. Backlund then beat Bobby Duncum for the vacant title, which looked just like a title defense.

I'm surprised Ted Dibiase hasn't been mentioned. It has to be the most famous one surely? He had the title for a week or so and was working House Shows as Champion, including at Madison Square Garden.

It was enough that Jarrett was making references in his return promo to 'Austin 3:16' being blasphemous. It's entirely possible he was just improvising, but with that being followed up with the Jarrett pitch makes it sound more than just a name being thrown out to Austin.

According to Russo that was a big part of the problem. That line legitimately pissed Austin off, to the point that he told them he never ever wanted to work with Jarrett. He had issues with the Jarretts anyway, because of how shit his pay was in Memphis so he took it a lot more personally than it was intended.

    2 hours ago, air_raid said:

Timeframes off. The pitch for a feud between the two (or between Austin and Mr Ass) was in the summer of 99, where the closest they came to a program was Austin randomly running out and giving Jarrett a Stunner on TV without explanation, provocation or follow through.

Two different times. Austin told them never to book him against Jarrett immediately after he returned from WCW in 1997 and did that promo. Russo pitched it again later on, thinking Austin would've calmed down, and he told them to fuck off again.

Speaking of QT Marshall, I really resent the fact the focus shifted to him at the end. Firstly, it's a little illogical. "Where was QT?" - well, where was Lee Johnson and the other members of the Nightmare Family? Three people came out to save Cody, I don't think the entire Rhodes army was necessary

Even stupider was the fact that you could see the Gunn Club just standing around at ringside until Dustin ran in. That looked far more more heelish than QT coming out to check if Cody was okay even though it was all over.

QT might be the best example of someone who doesn't have "IT" I've ever seen. He's perfectly adequate at everything he does but he simply isn't interesting. No matter how they push him, or who they put with him, it feels forced and unnatural. They gave him Dustin as tag partner, the Diamond Cutter as a finisher and Allie (briefly) as a girlfriend and none of it has worked. He could kick out of the One Winged Angel and still not get over.

I'll echo what others have said about the main event. It was absolutely insane. Britt Baker is a fucking star. It's hard to believe what a difference turning her heel has made. I also love that AEW are already selling a t-shirt with her bloody face on it. Not something I'd ever wear though.

  13. Crazy to see the Met Police taking instructions from the Donald Trump book of defusing tensions.

Banning the organised vigils, where they could've taken steps to enforce social distancing, masks, etc meant that this was inevitable. Women rightfully feel scared and betrayed. You aren't going to make that go away by stopping them from expressing it. Doing so violently just makes things far far worse.

I'm guessing politicians and the media will express outrage for a couple of days before the smearing of the women who were arrested starts.

Aye, but to be fair there's a long jump from those to a wrestler stooging and getting kicked in the chops by a fucking ref. Refs, MCs, timekeepers, should remember the golden rule - a wrestler can twat you.

Aye fair point. I'm not defending the spot itself. My point is that anybody seeing the fall out from that is going to think twice throwing something out there and seeing if it hits. Same with the Dan Madigan incident. You can't really be creative when one bad idea can cost you your job.

  15. The only thing I really really disliked was former New Japan announcer Jim Ross mocking Excalibur for knowing what a Kokeshi headbutt was.

Penta's got a thing for breaking arms doesn't he? Could be a nice way to write Cody off TV. I enjoyed Alex Abrahantes with Penta as well. He wasn't out and out heelish. It came off more that he completely believed what he was translating. It was a nice touch.

As others have said, Mox and Kingston together was great. I do think they rushed the break up of Kingston's family though. I feel like there was a story there and they just completely ignored it. Eddie looked like a star though, and Omega selling ONE punch like it was death was great. Can't say I'm too enthusiastic about Christian vs Omega though.

I enjoyed the last segment even if it did fall into the "Oceans 11" trap that a lot of wrestling angles are guilty of these days. So Jericho found out that MJF was setting him up so decided to set him up but MJF knew that Jericho would find out and that was the real set up? It didn't make a whole of sense but the performances saved it.

Maki Itoh ignoring the match to finish her song was hilarious. Genuinely laugh out loud funny.

How could that situation even happen? It sounds absolutely ridiculous unless the referee is Shawn Michaels. Although he is a contracted self-employed performer, he is being paid to do what the person that is paying for his services asks him to do.

If people don't like it there are other choices of where to work. If you want to work for the WWE behemoth, you have to accept that the reason they are such a successful company is because what Vince says, goes. A fine might be harsh, but there is no context as to whether he pulled anything like this before.

It was a six man match and the spot was that he was getting superkicked every time he got in the ring. The crowd started cheering for the Ref to do it so the rest of the guys in the ring called an audible. Keep in mind he was teaming with Rusev and Corbin against Styles and The Usos. It's not like Aiden English was calling the spots. He just did what they told him.

Was it a great spot? No. but threatening to sack him was bollocks and it's a good indication of why WWE is where it is creatively. Wrestlers are constantly told that they need to get themselves over but then get punished when they try. Some of the best things in wrestling history - The Four Horsemen, Austin 3:16, "If You Smell What The Rock Is Cooking", etc - have come from wrestlers ad-libbing. With very few exceptions that couldn't happen these days and that's why so much feels forced and unnatural. Because it is.

He's had a few injuries - he made the point recently that he's had half a dozen matches in the last 6 months. He's referenced a knee injury in 2021, and I'm willing to bet that's why he wasn't around much in the latter half of 2020 (either that or Covid concerns). Clearly, they see something in him. It's not difficult to see why - he's a handsome lad and he can go. If you see him doing stuff outside of the ring, he's pretty charismatic, but they've struggled to get that across so far.

This is basically his return, and they've giving him a heel-turn and a higher presence on the card than he had before. I'm guessing the heel-turn is in the hopes he can show more than he has before. He's worth taking a shot on, I reckon. If he can make the pieces fit, he'll be a solid upper-card hand.

Ah that makes a bit of sense. I had a feeling he'd been injured but I didn't realise it was more than one. I thought it might've been COVID too but he was on BTE a lot when things really started to kick off.

As I said, I like him. Hopefully this push works out for him. It just seems like such an odd spot to put someone in when they are so cold. I suppose that could work for the story as well though.

  18. I don't mind Scorpio Sky but his booking has been weird as fuck. The Tag Title tournament was basically a vehicle to get HIM over and I thought it worked really well. I went from not giving a shit about him to actually cheering out loud, on the bus, when he and Kazarian won the titles. I was really invested in him, and his story.

That was in 2019 though. They done fuck all with him since. I'd actually thought he'd retired or something. They surely can't (a) be planning to put the title on him or (b) expect the audience to take him seriously as a contender, which makes you wonder why he's in that spot?

On a positive note, the Dark Order segment on BTE did a good bit to win me back over. I absolutely love that lot.

Scripting promos isn't inherently the problem - I wish they wouldn't, and think there's an awful lot of wrestlers held back by that, and every time someone does a great promo on Talking Smack or for WWE.com that's readily apparent - but that they have shit writers is. Three hours of TV a week is a struggle, but there are writers in other media churning out content too - in TV drama or movies, there are rarely complaints about how everyone sounds the same because it's the same few people writing their dialogue. It's rare that you see a complaint that every character in a novel talks the same way because it's only one person writing their dialogue. Yet in wrestling, it's taken as read that one or two people writing for everyone will lead to everyone sounding the same - that's only true for two reasons; one is if the talent aren't trusted to, or aren't confident enough to, put their own spin on the material, and the other is if the writers just aren't good enough. And, obviously, they're not. Whether that's because, as we're told over and over again, Vince McMahon gets final say and butchers their work (conveniently allowing every ex-WWE writer to insist that all their ideas were actually gold even if they turned out shit), or if it's because they hire non-union writers who couldn't get a job anywhere else in TV or movies if they tried.

To be fair to the writing team working in WWE Creative sounds like an absolute nightmare. Wrestling just isn't meant to be written by so many people, and certainly not in such a politically charged environment, where one "bad" idea can effectively cost you your job. Dan Madigan's idea for Heidenreich WAS shite, right enough, but if I was in the room when it happened, I wouldn't be pitching anything creative ever again.

When you've got that many writers everything is going to be a compromise. I've been thinking about this a lot but one of my favourites things last year was Sue in AEW, which directly led to one of the best matches of the year. That could never happen in WWE. Anybody pitching "We should have his Mum drive him to the ring in her mini-van" would've got laughed out of the room. Because how the fuck do you explain it? If it made air at all it would've been tweaked to the point where the guy was a cowardly Mummy's Boy or she was really fat or some shit like that.

Same with stuff like "Johnny Hungee". Aiden English said he nearly got sacked from WWE for a spot where a Referee superkicked him. It was a dark match, the crowd were calling for it and loved it but he got screamed at backstage for going off-script and given a hefty fine (which Cena paid). Again, if I'm watching that I'm just going to do exactly what they tell me, no matter how shit it is.

For me, WWE's biggest problem is that they've essentially taken a lot of the shit that hampered WCW in the late 90's - Backstage politics, bizarre rules and an over-bearing Corporate structure - and just imposed it on themselves.

  20. I'm not sure what else they could've done there to be fair. It's a no-win position. The only good thing is that Kingston is talented enough to overcome it. For a lot of other people that could be a Shockmaster moment.

Bragging about the buy rate is fucking stupid though. That looks terrible when the shows two biggest selling points were such massive disappointments. They should be concentrating on winning back the people who feel like they got ripped off. Not bragging about it. Total lack of self-awareness there.

  21. Fucking hell.

That was one of those rare moments that was so bad it killed everything that went before it. Imagine promoting an Exploding-Ring. Hyping it up like someone might actually DIE and then delivering some less impressive than some people's pyros. Goldberg gets it worse every entrance than Kingston did there.

Likewise, doing that massive hype job and getting everyone thinking only to deliver Christian. It wasn't Al Snow in TNA bad but it's in that ball park. It would've been a decent signing without the big hype job.

Shame. There was some good stuff on the show but those were the most important things and they dropped the ball both times.

The promotion who were threatened with losing their venue confirmed it was true and apologised. In the end it's New Japan, they hired Elgin after his dodgy shit, Honma after the domestic violence accusations and I'm sure many others (I'm unsure what the Takagi, Sabre or Owens incidents were). They don't really give a shit.

I don't know about the others but Shingo was (allegedly) involved in the Dragon Gate animal abuse scandal.

Basically Cima bought a money that lived at the gym and it got tortured. They choked it, threw it into boiling water, etc. Pretty fucked up stuff.

    8 minutes ago, Cheapheat said:

I don't think they give a shit you are right there. But apologies, when you say 'the promotion confirmed it was true.' What did they confirm? I am a little bit out of the loop because the lack of due process made it hard to see the wood from the trees. I'm not trying to be a prick or defend anyone but I've never been quite sure what he was  accused of, and the sensitive nature of this topic makes it hard to have a good faith discussion about it.

He actively tried to blackball a woman who came forward with allegations against one of his mates. To the point that, as above, a venue threatened cancel a show unless she was pulled because "Will is our boy".

  23. Yes and no.

Wrestling needs more characters, yes, but authentic ones that people can actually believe in. You can't just stick a gimmick on someone and expect people to care. Warrior, for example, was cartoony as fuck but he genuinely believed in it and you could tell with his performance. That's why it worked. Same with Undertaker. Nobody else could've pulled that gimmick off even half as well.

Now, with a few exceptions it feels like WWE wrestlers are pretty far removed from the creative process around their own characters.

1995 WWF is underrated as fuck.

In ring maybe. The rest of the presentation is just so.....weird. The last time I saw any of it, I wanted to go back in time and bully myself.

I'm honestly not sure who the product was aimed it. It feels like they went "Well our audience are teenagers now. But not cool teenagers. You know the ones who don't go out a lot and can't talk to girls?! That's who we need to appeal to!"

I can't find it but they did an In Your House promo video where an awkward ginger boy fantasised about Razor Ramon coming round, in his ring gear, to watch wrestling with him. Who the fuck was watching that and thinking "THAT'S the guy I want to be!?"

The less said about Vince's reaction to Michaels' stripteases the better.

  24. I'm actually really looking forward to hearing him on commentary.

He's always come off really well on podcasts, interviews etc, where he's largely just been himself. He's a naturally likeable guy but that's never really translated to his on-screen persona in WWE. AEW seems a lot more relaxed creatively, especially on their YouTube shows, so it seems like it'd be a perfect fit.
