  1. The previous Eden Lake chat inspired me to give it a watch. I really liked it. What an intense and hard-hitting film although by the end I was beginning to chuckle a bit at how awful this woman's luck was. I think it'll have to be a while till I give it another watch, but I definitely will sometime.

  2. Mr Brightside is one of those songs that always makes me want to go on a murderous rampage. Certainly one of the more irritating songs I've ever heard.

As is often the case, I'm currently in a period of obsessing over the mighty Skeletonwitch. They completely crush live and consistently pump out great fun tunes which never fail to get the heads banging and the pits opened up.

This one is one I've listened to loads over the last couple of days and the point where it goes: "CANNOT ESCAPE WHAT IS WITHIN MY BLOOD 2-3-GO! *AWESOME SOLO* " is the point where I completely shoot my load. Seriously can't recommend these dudes enough to anybody who likes music which is fast, innovative, fun and heavy.
  3. Bloodstock doesn't look to appealing to me but i'm tempted to go for a day just to see Alcest and Iced Earth, hopefully Alcest play the same time as Watain so i can totally miss their god awful selves.

I'm still considering going to Bloodstock but this is the exact clash I don't want to happen. I love Watain and their brilliant stage set up combined with their phenomenal tunes on a main stage will be fantastic to behold as long as it's not done in the sunlight. Alcest are also fantastic and after seeing them last monday in Glasgow, I cannot wait to see them again. I'm just hoping that there's no more power metal to come and more black and death metal. If Bloodstock get Bolt Thrower then I think I'm sold. Otherwise the overall line up is a complete meh compared to Hellfest for me.

Woods of Ypres - I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery

I've been listening to these guys a lot over the past week and I'm really getting into them. Their brand of doom is beautiful and David Gold had a fantastic voice. Their stuff is quite eerie to listen to now considering that the singer died tragically in a car accident in December.

  5. You do have the Moorings which might be my favourite pub ever. I used to go out with a girl from the 'deen who introduced me to it and I immediately fell in love with the awesome combination of great jukebox and epic beer selection. I also went to Korova a few times, but yeah that was pretty gash. Cheap though!

This picture always makes me laugh. It was taken at Wacken 2010, and as one could tell with just a quick look, everyone's pretty drunk - Most of all my unconscious friend, who didn't sleep in his tent once in the four nights of the fest. It was a great drunken week in Germany and I've so many fond memories of the trip, which culminated in inebriated carnage with a 3 night stay in Hamburg.

And here I am enjoying an amazing German beer in a Munich beer garden after Summer Breeze last year.

  7. I wish I could get this chat thing to work for once. Getting an error message saying "Start up error: javalang.Error. Unable to load interface pixx....." Being someone who knows nothing about computers this sort of thing baffles me. I wish the live discussion threads were still on the go here. I loved those a few years back.

Edit: Ah think I got it

Since this thread is full of toilet mishaps, thought I'd share this gem. One of the funniest things I've read in a long time.

Edit: Shit the pictures don't seem to be working at the moment and it's the pictures that make it.

As for my own weird habits, a trip to the toilet is generally pretty normal: stand to piss, sit on the toilet seat to shit, wipe standing up. The weird thing I do is that I have to put a couple of bits of toilet paper on the seat before I sit on it. I don't even think I'm that paranoid about germs or anything but it's something I've always seemed to do. Anyone else?

  9. Watched the Spanish horror Atrocious last night. It's one of those "found footage" films based on a ghost in the woods. It creeped my girlfriend and I the fuck out to the point where we had to watch the Simpsons before going to bed to relax again :p It hasn't got great reviews on IMDB but I'd definitely recommend it. Just turn off the lights.

  10. http://www.hellfest.fr/

The first Hellfest announcement was made yesterday and the top acts are getting a lot of negative response. Trivium in a high profile spot at Hellfest? Fuck no. It's widely hoped that the next announcements will be better. Although this one has got some top bands - Alcest, Anaal Nathrakh, Darkspace, dISEMBOWELMENT, Napalm Death, Necros Christos, Solstafir mainly.

The general consensus seems to be that because Hellfest sold out last year for the first time there's a fear that this year they're going to go more mainstream, which I certainly hope is not the case. I do think the next announcement will be better, but this one pales in comparison to the first announcements of the last few years.

  11. Can anybody recommend me a good band from Scotland?

No point mentioning Nazareth, Alestorm, The Almighty, Holocaust and Korpse as I'm well aware of there existence.

I may be late to this but.....

    Cancerous Womb

    Daemonolith

    Black Talon

    Nerrus Kor

    Askival

    Falloch

    Circle of Tyrants

    Haar

    Moonrape

    Cnoc An Tursa

    Ainshval

    Achren

    Vostok

are all some great bands/projects from up here.

  12. (out of the 3 I know)

    1) Power Metal (an absolute blast before they decided they could make more money ripping off Exhorder's groove sound. This is some damn fine heavy metal)

    2) Cowboys From Hell (a fun listen every so often containing some good tracks but also a fair bit of filler. Definitely the better of the two new-Pantera records I've heard.)

    3) Vulgar Display of Power (a distant third, absolute tuff-guy poser crap. Loses extra points for containing Walk.)

Also if I can be arsed I might write up a wee report of Hellfest in the near future.

  13. Off to Hellfest at 4.30 am. Very excited, it's definitely the best line up in Europe. www.hellfest.fr to make you all jealous :D There's a slight chance I'll consume an alcoholic beverage or two over the course of the weekend...

  14. On another subject, what metal music websites do people use? I mean for news and reviews. I recently discovered metalsucks which is pretty good. Any UK based ones?

    www.metal-archives.com

The metal bible as far as I'm concerned, full of upcoming albums, reviews and basically an encyclopedia for any metal band ever complete with previous members, discographies, the works. The forums are brilliant, with strict mods who enforce a high standard of discussion and lots of very knowledgeable people. I seem to discover a few new bands a week through their recommendation forum. Highly recommended.

  15. The new Morbid Angel album is sadly utterly appalling. Some people are saying it's the biggest disappointment since St Anger.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYTtVk7M5dQ

I mean seriously? This makes me want to cry tears of piss. A review I read summed it up excellently with "It’s like one of the most base level Nu-Metal tracks from The Burning Red being covered by Hatebreed with extra riffs borrowed from The Beautiful People."

Even the death metal tracks are boring. I'm still going to endure a couple of tracks from this turd of an album when I see them at Hellfest though just to lose my shit to Maze of Torment and Chapel of Ghouls.

were we maybe expecting too much?

Probably yes. Though this album has been hyped and hyped and hyped. It's been 8 years in the making and features the eagerly anticipated return of David Vincent to the band. People had huge expectations. I think that's why everyone's so pissed off because after these 8 long years, a lot of the album doesn't even sound remotely like Morbid Angel, and indeed in some songs, not even like death metal. If Trey and David had got together and released this album as a sideproject people would probably have found the whole affair a bit comical and taken the piss a little. It's the fact that it's under the Morbid Angel name which is annoying.

Also has anyone seen the little blurbs from leading metal musicians about the new album? For those that haven't:

""The new Morbid Angel album will cause 3rd World War. After June 7th, the extreme metal scene is never gonna be the same again... And I already can't wait the moment I'll be sitting on my sofa listening to "Illus Divinum Insanus" while the world burns! Ha!" - Nergal, BEHEMOTH

"No other band in the entire Extreme Metal genre but Morbid Angel would have ever dared to make 'Illud Divinum Insanus'. There are going to be quite a few unimaginative underground purists who think they know better what kind of album Morbid Angel should or should not be putting out, but with 'Illud Divinum Insanus' Trey and David prove that they answer to no one but themselves. It is an incredibly well written, performed, recorded and produced record." - Karl Sanders, NILE

"One of the best death metal releases since their last album with Vincent. I'm not too much into the techno bits but I am a dude who will appreciate and respect bands doing new things, progressing... So it's all good. Vincent's vocals of course are still as good as they come. And the riffs are definitely there, Trey always delivers. New drummer is killer too!" - Mikael Akerfeldt, OPETH

"The ultimate voice of death metal is back, as hellish as ever!" - Mikael Stanne, DARK TRANQUILLITY

"Glad to see Morbid Angel are back! We had our share of criticism when we first incorporated electronic elements in our sound and we know it takes courage and passion to follow one's own stream of inspiration. This time the guitar work is more impressive than ever and those 11 songs are a real 'tour de force'. With this new album they're not afraid to take the hit from the more conservative audience but that's what it means to be extreme!" - Vorph, SAMAEL

"Innovation, wits and a feral 'no compromise' attitude is what brands the greatest of bands. 'Illud Divinum Insanus' is all that and a leap further! Hail Morbid Angel!" - Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen, AVA INFERI, ex MAYHEM

"Morbid Angel still prove they can continue their legacy and deliver their madness with a skill so elite. The metal scene has no choice but to give back the crown to the undisputable kings of death metal! MORBID! MORBID! MORBID!" - Anders 'Blakkheim' Nystr
