  1. Yeah pretty much, although I did see the Maestro pre-WCW with them once so I don't know how they played that off.

The best thing about the 'WWF invasion' was changing most of their rudo midgets to WWF gimmicks. We had mini Vader, Mankind, Goldust and even Paul Bearer for a short while!

  2. They were shite, but they were only young. If they slowed down, learned some psychology, hit the gym, bought some boots with lifts, and got a tan... they'd be ok.

In other words, if they changed pretty much everything about themselves, they may just be something other than a couple of shitehawks :)

To be fair, I probably wouldn't mind them if they were to be given a role which just saw them being beaten up, something along the lines of PG-13 in the WWF for example, but you just can't help but laugh at the absurdity of them when they're actually on offence with all their ridiculously contrived indieriffic moves, double teams, sequences etc.

  3. I seem to recall one of both of them working somewhere else under the gimmicks for a bit too, possible a short run in Puerto Rico or Mexico. There is at 20% chance I'm talking shit though. Might even have been a few shows for the USWA or something like that (if that was still going then).

Nah, your right enough, they got shipped off to AAA for the spring/summer of '97 along with Jake Roberts (although he was probably there on his own back)

  4. Aside from Scott Putski, was there anyone who worked for WCW during the Nitro era who either hailed from Eastern Europe, had family lineage from Eastern Europe or had an Eastern European gimmick (IE: bog-standard Soviet Iron Man gimmick)?

Pretty sure i read somewhere that Maxx Muscle was Polish.

I guess Dean Malenko was supposed to be off Russian stock too, even if he wasn't really.

Frank Andersson was from Sweden too, but he was probably gone by the time Nitro came along.

  5. He was one of the most awkward looking wrestlers around. Really unathletic, unco-ordinated and not very good at all back in '92. Watching him team with Marcus Alexander Bagwell was hard going, probably as close as you could get to wrestling hell for WCW at that time

When he came back to WCW around '98-ish I thought he was much improved though. He looked the part (despite the huge baggy trousers), found a new arrogant streak, seemed a lot more natural in general, and done cool moves & shit. Didn't hang around long though.

  6. If these rumours of hiring old midcarders that are good hands hold any truth, then Masters has to be top of that list surely? Carlito, MVP and Morrison are all strong shouts given that TNA hasn't picked them up and they're all still active and well recognised by the WWE fanbase.

Masters should never be let near WWE ever again. Crap in-ring, crap on the mic, zero charisma. Nein danke. I'm fairly neutral towards the others. If it meant not having repeat matches every bloody week, then maybe it wouldn't hurt, though none of them are that memorable. Carlito is probably my favourite of that bunch.

Haha, that'll go down well with the in-crowd on here

I disagree - but I disagree with them too. To me, he's somewhere in between how awful you think he is, and how wonderful they think.

He might be back but it's not like he's ever going to be a huge priority for the WWE. When he was here before he could barely get better than Superstars, so they're hardly going to consider him some kind of must-sign now.

  7. That's mildly funny to me now, although nowhere near as good as the last one I remember (was it for Summerslam maybe?)

I would've hated that sort of thing back when I was a kid though, unless it was just all the good guys doing it. It would've shattered the illusion a bit. Changed days now I guess though.

  8. I don't see the fuss over the term 'moveset' at all. I'll happily use it, it's better than talking about 'repertoires', 'arsenals' and suchlike.

Every character generally does have a set of moves they favour and regularly use, moveset seems like the most natural term to refer to it as.

  9. Legendary heel wrestling manager 'The Grand Wizard' was Ernie Roth, who died in 1983. I seem to remember a guy popped up on WWE commentary in about 1993 or 1994 also using the name 'The Wizard'. Who was that?

I think that was just Bruce Pritchard. He also done a Dusty Rhodes parody for a short while around that time. Came off more like Lash Leroux though, hence it was obviously shit.

  10. Incidentally, the only real contenders in my eyes for worst Rumble are this year and 1993.

1995 surely? I thought that was almost unanimously agreed to be the worst Rumble ever. I haven't seen any Rumbles from the past 5 or-so years but I struggle to believe any of them are worse than 95. 30 second intervals and only 2 or 3 entrants who had even a remote chance of winning, 2 of which started and finished the match. No match highlights how much the company was on its arse in 95 better than the Rumble.

Definitely. And half the participants were tag teams. If ever there was a rumble that could have been doing with the 'prelim' match guys doing double duty, it's this one.

I still quite like it, mind, even though it was shit as far as Rumbles go. And it was saved somewhat by an excellent undercard (Taker/IRS aside), making it an event i'd still rather watch than the steaming turd that was to be the next PPV; WMXI.

And I love the 1993 Rumble too, but that wasn't shit, just a bit lacking in star power. Cracking undercard as well!

  11. Anybody remember the shows like "March to Wrestlemania"?

In the days of endless jobber matches they featured an all star card.

Various ones happened. "Summerslam Spectacular" in 1990. "Superstars and Stripes Forever", just before Wrestlemania 7, featured a belting Shawn Michaels vs Mr. Perfect match, IIRC. I believe they also had a few "Survivor Series Showdown"'s too.

I know for a fact that the Summerslam one from 1990 is on Youtube. I was watching Jake Roberts vs "Iron" Mike Sharpe (!) from it a few days ago. Jim Duggan vs Earthquake was also on that show.

That Perfect/Bulldog match made it to a VHS release too, It was notable for Shawn losing the plot with an insane dive about 5 years ahead of it's time. I remember Hacksaw/Quake as being a great big steaming turd; the most phoned-in of phone-ins. Despite not liking Duggan I was expecting something decent as he seemed to be suited to matches v big men (Vader, Andre, even Yoko), but it wasn't to be.

These specials weren't actually full of star v star matches, they tended to be more like a combination of Prime Time, SNME, and a PPV pre-show, with 2 or 3 star matches, the same number of squashes, as well as recaps & repeats from Superstars/Challenge and PPV promotion. For one of the 'name' matches, you almost always had the obligatory singles match between members of two teams facing each other at the PPV.

I think they lasted from around 1989 up until Wrestlemania X, before they switched to 'Sunday Night Slam' for a year or so when they fizzled away, probably around when the Free-For-Alls were introduced.

  12. Just before heading to Panama City for a live Nitro, Chris Kanyon got a call giving him his 30 days notice, arriving at Panama he was to learn that it would be the final Nitro and WCW was being brought by Vince McMahon and that due to being given notice his contract would not get brought out by WWF (he soon after got a deal anyway). Depressed, worried about his future employment and with a broken arm he spent 4 days mixing perscription drugs with booze.

He then bumped into a group of pissed up students on Spring Break and proceeded to body slam the shit out of them.

    Nobody!

Kanyon was great. Don't know if i'd rather put in a fun smiley or a sad one....

  13. I wish we got a bit longer out of the Narcissist, and I would've liked some focus on that feud post-WM9... but to hell with missing out on the Doink/Lawler match to get it.

Even if they did hold onto Flair for another couple of months to see out Wrestlemania, I don't think Flair/Hitman would've cut it as a main event on that stage. The only match featuring Flair that could have would've been against Hogan. If Yoko was already champ and Hogan was challenging though, Flair/Hitman loser leaves town would've been great second-from-top*

    Hitman/Savage would've been something else.

Got a link to the thread, air-raid? I fkng love 1993 WWF. Probably my 2nd fave year ever. Doesn't stop me pondering what I would've done differently though

*EDIT: then again, that would've done us out of Perfect/Flair so fck that also :)

  14. OK, so these aren't really photos, but I thought they were quirky and interesting. On another forum they are doing a fantasy rebook of 1993 WWF, and one of the lads has knocked up some posters for the rebooked PPVs. I think they're pretty cool and spark the imagination somewhat.

(Bam Bam is on the KOTR poster as he was Hitmans challenger)

The kind of sad shit i'd probably enjoy

A rebook of KOTR must be one of the least time consuming tasks around though. What else could you have done other than insignificant undercard stuff like, for example, switching Duggan for Jannetty, and cutting Tatanka/Lex by half..?

No pics to add, but this thread is ace

  15. Did they forget to include Orton too or something, or was that a Twitter joke?

He was 14. Seems reasonable, maybe even a bit generous.

The biggest problem I have with these things are that they're clearly clueless about stuff outside of America, yet they try to pretend they're not by way of a few token picks scattered around here and there.

I don't know how the Jap fans feel but for Mexico, if they're including some guys, it's absurd that dozens more are missing, especially when the whole bottom half of the 500 is filled out with obscure bush-league indie crap.

They should really just admit their ignorance and limit it to US only (or US and Japan if they really are clued up on that scene, I dunno)

Just look at some of the shite that's above the fantastic Volador jr at a lowly 133 for instance.

  16. Why did Sid leave the WWF in 97? His Wikipedia page doesnt say why, so it was just two months after headlining Mania, and he was gone. Why?

Also, why wasnt he picked up by WCW for a whole two years? I assume it was because of the AA incident, but did AA have much stroke back then? Combined with the fact that it happened 4 years ago (a lifetime in wreatling), who had it in for Sid back then. Hogan? Bischoff? He must have had much bigger enemies than AA to not get signed in 97.

From odds and ends i've read, I think they just let him go after he was involved in that car accident because he would've been out of action for a while, they had little in the way of plans for him anyway, and they suspected he was at it a few months earlier when he was declaring himself unable to work post-WM13.

I've actually wondered that same question of why it took so long for him to find his way back to WCW. Likewise for why the WWF never picked him up in 1994. Or any other star whose been away from the top 2 for a spell for that matter. When it's top stars, you always think there's got to be a story behind it as their defections would obviously have been a coup for the other side.

  17. Without giving away any spoilers, can anyone tell me what the Chikara King Of Trios 2011 cards were for all the nights? Thanks

    How is that possible...?

I'd guess by listing the opening brackets then leaving the semis/finals as winner of match#1 v winners of match#2 etc...

  18. Quick CV question, what would be the more acceptable way to describe yourself at the start if you're putting in a short profile paragraph?

For example "A conscientious and enthusiastic [ _____________ ] with experience or skills in such and such.......

    worker? candidate? individual? something else?
