  1. Was Jannetty gone by the Rumble, or was he just being kept off tv to sell the injury before returning to build to WM8? I always wondered whether the he was planned to make an appearance in some way. It wasn't the type of incident that absolutely needed a long layoff, they could have given him a brutus/virgil mask or something

On an episode of Superstars at the start of 92 at the end of the show they said Jannetty would be on the show in action the next week, and he wasn't and disappeared until the end of the year seemingly.

Interesting, cheers. So if what was probably planned a few weeks in advance came to fruition, the Rumble could have been even better as Jannetty and the Hitman would no doubt be involved.

Not a bad couple of matches for the heartbreak kid to begin and end his career in....

  2. Did Shawn Michaels have any televised matches between the Rockers breakup and the '92 Rumble?

I don't think so. I remember having this same thought a while back, and if memory serves, other than some SWS/WWF crossover stuff where he teamed with Japanese guys or WWF heels (which I don't think was televised), they had loads of Rockers stuff already filmed from December (including the Barber Shop segment) that carried the breakup on TV all the way to the Rumble.

Again, I'm going off memory a bit here, but IIRC, they filmed the Barber Shop segment well early in December, and The Rockers still did a shitload more house shows together safe in the knowledge that the breakup segment wasn't going out on TV until early '92.

Going by the historyofwwe site, I think you're right, although i'm a bit surprised as I would have guessed otherwise and said he'd had a Superstars or Challenge debut in the new gimmick.

You're definitely right regarding the Rockers still teaming for a while after the barber shop incident was filmed, as I remember finding out a few years back that the barber shop incident was actually taped at the This Tuesday In Texas taping.

  3. Just an old luchador who ended up pretty popular in Japan when he worked for Hamada's UWF. I don't think he's Mexican though, he's from one of the Caribbean islands i'm sure.

He was really agile, even when he became ancient, and was a lot of fun in small doses. Unfortunately, his act was generally repetitive as hell. He was working for CMLL and doing MPro tours well into the new millenium. He's probably most well known for that silly spot where he gets all the rudos to hop along with him.

I guess google is my friend. I think this is he. In that short video he did impress me though. Not sure how he'd fair in a longer no clipped match though.

    Nah, that's Salsero. Kendo's a different guy.

  5. Speaking of Muta, on this video he runs up the ramp and clotheslines Hogan over the top into the ring. Check that camera angle out! Its like something from a film. Hogan's checking himself to see if he's OK and you see Muta darting towards him in the background. Lovely stuff. Another reason why TNA should bring back the ramp. People bitched "IT WAZ 2 MUCH LIKE WcW!1~" But I haven't found a reason yet why people dont use entrance ramps that attach to the ring. Cactus vs Sting, Bam Bam vs Taz and Muta vs Hogan prove they are lovely to look at and great fun for spots

I'd guess nowadays it's probably to give the high flyers some room to do all their dives and whatnot, as the other 3 sides can be a bit tight.

I liked the ramp, it always gave a great effect when someone bumped on it because it looked like there was no give at all, but there must've been a bit because guys were being slammed, suplexed and backdropped on it all the time during WCW PPVs. Plus as you say, it allowed for some neat, creative spots. And it generally just looked quite good, entrances were enhanced, and you knew it was a big occasion when they brought it out.

I don't know why anyone would complain about it being like WCW though, you'd think that would be a bonus for TNA. If they were more like WCW in the first half of the 90s, whether in terms of look, style, atmosphere/feel, booking or whatever, then it wouldn't be a bad thing at all.

  6. How is it Demolition were in WrestleFest and Randy Savage wasn't?

I'd guess it was probably just to get a tag team in there seeing as the game only had a tag format. They already had LOD , so maybe they wanted to even it up with a heel team, and Demolition were the most recognisable and established one. I agree though, it does seem a bit of a strange inclusion as i'm sure most kids would rather just play as the Hart Foundation or the Rockers if they wanted to go as a tag team.

Also maybe, Savage wasn't doing much around the time the roster was set for the game (sometime in those few months between SSeries 90 and Rumble 91 I'd guess), and had been mostly back in the midcard feuding with Rhodes through 1990.

You could probably also question why the Undertaker wasn't in it (or Rick Rude, if the cut-off was actually prior to Survivor Series)

  7. OK, well erm...Desert Strike.

When I saw the thread I thought "oh bollocks. I hate that game."

And went and bought it. The game has become such a bane in my life that it's actually not what we were supposed to have reviewed this week. It's an evil, evil production and the software developers who thought this sluggishly dull game would be fun are my new arch-enemies.

Now, Desert Strike is a game about a helicopter during war time. Helicopters are fast, and war is action packed. This game is neither.

I spent what seemed like hours actually trying to reach my intended targets, with very little else to do in between. When action does come your way it's at a very irritating time, and I just couldn't be bothered dealing with it.

The game controls are pretty awkward to. It's certainly a game that would be less infuriating with the modern day double-analogue stick.

Graphic wise things are OK I guess, but sound wise things are monotonous. There's sound effects for the propellers/bullets, but there's no sense of atmosphere. No music, no sound effects that give any sense of where you actually are...maybe we've been spoiled in this modern era in terms of the atmosphere a game presents, but having said that I wonder if I'm just excusing this particular fault.

Not only did I buy the wrong game, I bought a BAD game. It's about as much fun as trying to fit a needle up your pee-hole.

    AVOID.

    1/10

Haha, I don't think i've ever read an opinion on a game that's differed quite as much from mine as the above!

Some of my greatest gaming memories are of playing Desert (and Jungle) Strike. It was right up there with Micro Machines 2, Super Mario World/Kart, Road Rash, Streets of Rage, the early EA sports games etc. in terms of my favourites back in the day. I think it was probably the 'free-roaming' nature of it which really set it apart from anything else at the time.

  8. The problem here is the buildings were built in the 60s to the withstand the impact of a Boeing airliner colliding into them, 9/11 is the first case of a building being destroyed by a plane hitting it with the steel girders melting instead part of the structure still standing.

Strictly speaking, the towers weren't designed to withstand any aircraft impact; rather the lead designer took it upon himself to carry out a post-design assessment as a result of publicised safety related complaints raised by a rival property owner. It's believed it was a pretty simple analysis, based on initial impact, considering speeds of under 200mph, and taking no account of fuel and the effects from widespread fires.

Even if a detailed assessment was an integral feature of the design, carried out by specialists rather than a plain old Structural Engineer, it goes without saying that in the 60s, technology related to Fire Engineering was a whole lot more primitive than it is today. Added to the fact that these designs were so innovative at the time, it would have been practically impossible for anyone to say with any certainty how the buildings would behave in such a scenario.

9/11 is the first case of a building being destroyed by a plane hitting it
  9. Not that any of their claims have any credibility, but where these truthers really come unstuck imo is when it comes to putting forward their theories about the collapse itself. It's amazing how so many people become Structural Engineers and demolition experts all of a sudden. When they at least confine their conspiracies to the Government's supposed motives and the political side of things behind the scenes, they'll still get ridiculed, but at least they can continue on safe in the knowledge that they can't really be disproved as such. But the topic of what physically brought the buildings down is another matter entirely, because it can quite easily be shown that they

  10. did i dream that there was there a storyline in wcw around 99-00 where curt henning was on a massive losing streak? it sticks out in my mind and i was really pulling for him in every match he had, but cant find any confirmation of it.

You're kinda along the right lines. They ran an angle where he would be forced to retire if he lost by pinfall, which resulted in him losing quite a few matches by dq, countout or submission during those months. It wasn't a streak as such though, he was still winning some matches too

  11. I was under the impression that Kane the Undertaker was The Undertaker and that the Kane part of the name was dropped before he went on TV/PPV?

Might just be my memory playing tricks but I am sure I can remember PWI running a pic of the Undertaker just before he debuted on PPV under the Kane the Undertaker name.

It was a bit of a strange one. They gave him the Cain/Kane name for his first TV tapings before Survivor Series, but they were to be aired after the PPV, and by the time Survivor Series came around they changed it. So he debuted oficially on PPV as the Undertaker, then had a few squashes as Kane the Undertaker for his TV debut(s), before reverting back to the Undertaker.

  12. Of course it is, thanks for that. I was totally confused as I didn't even recognise him as anyone I knew, nevermind not place him.

No worries, I only recognised him from a close-up towards the end when they were brawling. He is a pretty undistinguished looking guy for a supposed superstar.

  13. Did WWF have some sort of deal with FMW in around 1997 just watching a cage match between Ken Shamrock and Vader from around that time. Also didnt Mankind work there aswell

Yeah, it was through Victor Quinones. It obviously wasn't a talent exchange or anything, but he would have been responsible for the Headhunters in WWF, and I think he also helped Kaientai get started too.

  14. I know nobody ever talks about it, but i presume there's still a handful of lucha fans lurking around here;

A great little match from Arena Mexico a few weeks ago for the CMLL Superlightweight title between between veteran maestro Virus and up & comer Guerrero Maya Jr. Probably my favourite match of the year so far, it's refreshing to see a big CMLL singles match these days that doesn't follow the usual dull formula. Virus is still one of the best wrestlers in the world.

  15. I seem to recall a match with Pat Tanaka that ended with a nasty sitout tombstone on one of the home releases taped (I believe) at MSG which was pretty good.

Of course, the king of "while in the Rockers" Marty singles matches is the one with The Model off Greatest Hits.

Yeah, that was class. Was going to mention that to balance it out somewhat, only Shawn had arguably an even better match on the very same show vs Kato.

What Model match is that on the tape, the Survivor Series 90 build up show?

Sorry, wasn't sure if I was misreading this - if the Marty vs Martel match you are refferring to was from before Survivor 90, the Shawn vs Kato match can't have been the same night (as in the same taping) can it? Kato didn't turn up until early 91, I thought - it was definately Sato & Tanaka at the Survivor Series that year.

Sorry, I was meaning the Shawn/Kato match was the same night as Marty/Tanaka that Air_Raid mentioned. It would've been around the time of Wrestlemania 7.

  16. What Model match is that on the tape, the Survivor Series 90 build up show?

The very same, taped October 29th to air on said special on November 18th. Great ten minute match.

Ah, was hoping there was maybe another one out there I wasn't aware of to add to my 'still to see' list - currently comprising the Al Snow and Shane Douglas matches from SMW and ECW.

What Model match is that on the tape, the Survivor Series 90 build up show? There was one i was desperate to see fromPrime Time late 91 vs the Model which went to a 20 minute draw. When i finally did see it, i was a bit pissed to find it was joined in progress and only the last 5 minutes aired. :(
