  1. I joined a new library yesterday and ended up borrowing 5 graphic novels: Batpig: Go Pig Or Go Home (a charming thing for kids with a little silliness running through it), Superman & The Authority (it's good that Grant Morrison has written it, and it has an interesting premise), and what I'm hoping is the three Spider-Verse collected volumes. It's reminded me that I still have a fair few to read on my phone/tablet as well as I picked up some Annhilators books.

  2. EDIT: Ignore me. I didn't read the dates.

I remembering being at that TNA show where Hogan wrestled his last match. Bully Ray had his Liverpool shirt on and was ripping on United to try and get some cheap heat and it backfired spectacularly.

That's proper cracked me up. I feel a bit bad about how much I laughed at it.

My mate sent me a version of that with a coffin there instead.

  4. I remember him getting squashed by Nailz at Summerslam 92, and by Yoko (literally) at Survivors that year. He was great in that Jericho hype video in AEW as well. It is a sad loss.

I saw Ole Anderson has passed away as well.

  5. There's an episode of OSW Review that covers it during their Black Reign in TNA arc. It's a decent run of episodes if that kind of thing floats your boat. The blindfolds keep coming off, the ref has to do some spectacular pretending not to have seen things. It's just dreadful.

Jake Roberts vs. Rick Martel in a blindfold match. Loads of hokey fun.

The James Storm blindfold match in TNA I'd even more mental bollocks than that. Was it at the same Lockdown as had Team 3D in that electrified cage gubbins?

I remember when I first moved to Manchester seeing my housemate had a video called "barmy wrestling" and one of the matches on it was just some Japanese lads having a scrap in a derilict house. It was properly weird stuff.

  7. I was meant to be going to Cornwall to watch it with one of my mates as he really wanted to watch Sting's final match with me, but between college every Friday and my mum's having been in hospital I'm not going to be able to make it down there. I'm gutted as well. There will most likely be actual tears shed once my all-time favourite rides off into the limelight.

  8. If somebody says this to me I'll concede that it is, but that when a match is worked well enough you can suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the spectacle of it all. Case in point, and I'm sure @air_raidwill remember when we went to that PROGRESS show at the Ritz and it was, I think, Matt Riddle and Travis Banks having a particularly hard hitting match. At some point I ended up uttering something along the lines of "you know it's not real, right?" in some properly weedy high pitched voice.

  9. We had the France Italy game on in the pub yesterday, and it turned out to be quite the game. The tension for that final penalty was palpable. Mind you if France hadn't had a man sent off Italy would likely have gotten a right hiding.

  10. I wonder whether they'll keep Chung and Wes apart as it'd make for a cracking final.

The hometown hero was such a knob he managed to get the crowd to turn on him.

Bionic needs more time as he seems pretty good whenever he gets to do an event.

Did it used to mean you were out if you got pushed over the side in Gauntlet? There used to be 5 zones as well.

Fury is bae, and you can see Legend is having a great time.

Marie-Louise is a bit cocky as well. I reckon it might be her and Bronte in the final, although that Betti lass from Bolton was pretty good in her Eliminator, so maybe it'll be her.

Another little thing - I fucking hate when they slow down the tackle that ends a game on The Edge. Overproduced shite. The whole drama is in watching the fall in real time and we never get to, the replay is in slow-mo as well, and the Gladiators fucking up and falling off is way more exciting if we're just seeing it as is because it's so sudden.

I like that it shows the impact of the tackle, imagine if Kevin Dunn was producing it, though.

  12. Did I spot Martin Kirby in Wesley's introductory VT? That ring he was wrestling in was tiny as well. I was a bit confused that he just got parachuted into the quarter finals at random, but going by his performance in some of the games I reckon he would probably have walked it in the heats. I wonder whether he was booked to be a Gladiator but they had enough.

Diamond was a little heelish the other week after she took somebody's shoe but failed to catch the contender on The Wall. She threw it away and stormed off. I agree with Fury being a perennial babyface.

That ladies' Eliminator was a cracker. He did well to catch up in the men's, but didn't deserve it for pussing out of the Gauntlet.

  13. Since he was ousted from the afternoon show for Scott Mills I'd had this running joke with my mum that all the other shows he presented afterwards were all just recorded and edited so they could be played at any time. When my mum texted to let me know he'd passed away I had to reply with "I'm sure they've got enough stuff he's recorded to keep him going for years." It's a terrible loss. He was a constant of the afternoons on Radio 1 when I was a kid with his posse, but when he went to Radio 2 it was a natural fit, although my fondest memories are of him keep getting calls and texts meant for Mark & Lard whenever they were on holiday from their Radio 1 show and people couldn't be arsed listening to Colin & Edith covering for them.

  14. That Irish lady did so well in the games, but was unlucky in the Eliminator. I saw somebody had posted all the times for the Eliminators, and some of the women's runners-up have better times than winners of other eliminators. That must be a sickener.

Legend doing his heel schtick, then giggling because he's having such a good time has become quite endearing. I enjoyed when Diamond was being a bit heelish last week as well. Still find Fire doing a Hadouken as her "pose" funny. Fury is my favourite lady Gladiator. Nitro is cool.

I think it's three quarter finals, with the fastest runners-up going throug to the semi final with the three winners. A third/fourth place play-off would be cool as well, but maybe that's just because of all the Only Connect I watch.

  15. I'm pretty sure it's M83 as if it were a motorway.

When I was in college and uni I was in a couple of bands with dubious names. Melted Goldfish, 2by6.5 (there were 13 of us, it was everybody in our year group), Threshold Of Dave, and Suicidal Bunnies. I was also part of a  European hair metal band called Unicron for one of the performance assessments. After I moved home I joined my mate's band, Turgid, and was also in a Ramones cover band called Pinhead, who reverted to their original form: Boredom and kicked me out in favour of their original bass player.

Another mate and I called ourselves Leather, Murder, Mayhem, YEAH! (affectionately known as LMMY) after some grafitti he once saw on a wall in Birmingham.

We thought of trying to make some dance tunes under the name The Dingle Brothers, and also thought of working on some electro versions of some of the punk stuff we did in Boredom before we got kicked out under the names Sparemen Of The Bored.

Finally another mate and I wanted to do tunes using the Simpsons inspired name Battling Seizure Robots, and I contemplated 2 possible DJ names should I ever be arsed to do some mixes again: Renowned Sex Offender, or Cesar Romero's Moustache.

    Awful, I know.

You fools are going to be raided by Teedy Kay and the boys in the morning.

Only if he's working for Interpol.

In 2008 I was on holiday in Basel, Switzerland. It's right on the French and German borders. I spent much of the holiday just riding around on the tram and eating the McGruyere (a forerunner to whatever the Big Tasty is called nowadays).

Anyway, one day I get the tram to a stop called St Louis Grenze and set off walking down the road, past this big building in the middle of the road, and as I'm walking I spot a sign and see that suddenly the prices are in Euros instead of Swiss Francs, and everything is written in French instead of German. I turn around and see that this big building in the middle of the road has DOUANE written on it in huge letters. I'd walked into France without my passport, and immediately panicked and set off back into Switzerland in case I had a run-in with the local gendarmerie.

This is not actually my opinion I'd have to rewatch the match. But I have heard it suggested that if you take away the crowd at the rock v hogan match it's not a great match. Although the crowd do pay a big part in a lot of matches so that could be true of many matches

I remember I watched it with some friends the day after and I couldn't get into it. Rock did great playing the heel in light of how the crows reacted to Hogan, but the match didn't do it for me.

  18. Just got in from Soulwax at New Century Hall. Was a heck of a show. Probably the best of all the times I've seen them. We were right down the front. They're still doing the three drummers thing, but they had to replace Victoria Smith as she's on tour with ABBA. They did stuff from every era. It was so cool hearing how they adapted stuff like Idiots In Love and Conversation Intercom to their current style and sound.

What I think was really good of the venue was that they had people the other side of the rail down the front giving out water to whoever wanted it, and they were handing out glasses of water as people were leaving. Heck of a night. Really good distraction from e erything that's going on with my mum.
