I didn’t love MJF and CM Punk as much as it seems everyone else did.

It was fine, and I liked the line about MJF always going for low hanging fruit, but that, “battle,” style of promo never does much for me. People dunking on each other with workshopped lines designed to make the crowd go, “oOoOOhH!” wasn’t my cup of tea years ago. It practically killed WWE’s women’s division when that became the exclusive way in which they’d communicate. But in 2021? In AEW? When you’ve got Eddie Kingston on the same show? It feels more inauthentic, awkward and silly than ever before. It’s like Kingston has completely revolutionised the very concept of promos and everyone else - especially someone like MJF - is struggling to catch up.

Whilst I’m sure neither guy was handed a script, if there are long periods of time where it feels like someone is delivering their own pre-rehearsed soliloquies, then what’s the difference? There was a long chunk of time during MJF’s promo in particular that could have been directly lifted from an episode of Raw. Just a body with a mouth delivering their lines and hitting their marks. There’s nothing that makes me less excited to see guys have a fight. No wonder MJF is referencing there being a bidding war when his contract is up. This promo was a borderline audition for the typical WWE promo at the start of every show.

When do we reckon this back-and-forth, “battle,” style of promo was popularised? The Rock? Cena? Shawn and Bret? Either way it belongs in the bin.

Everything is OK in moderation. Not a trope I've seen a lot in AEW, or in WWE much which might be because I don't see much, but the point stands.

This was mostly really good. Could have been shorter. Didn't need the HHH references. Otherwise enjoyed. People recently been asking if MJF was going to go after some of this stuff, like Punk's UFC run, and he did. People wanted something for Punk to get his teeth into. Now he has.

They had one a couple of weeks ago with “I’m Well Scary Me!” Abadon having to beat Britt to get a shot at the women’s title, which she then lost any way

That's fine. It shouldn't be something you know the champ will lose. Because of that, I thought Britt would win here which made it a mild surprise.

Jericho was really good in that opening match. His best stuff on commentary for ages. Agree he then looked crap at the end. Milking a pop that wasn't coming didn't help either. Having made it so obvious that Jericho would run in, Mox coming out instead would have been great.

not my place to accept it or otherwise, but that's at least one of the better wrestler apologies I've ever seen, and perhaps the first time that a wrestler has said that they're working on self-improvement and actually quantified what they mean by it. Bonus points for not signing off with his gimmick name, even when his real name is more stupid, too.

I thought the same but I read the Quoted Tweets and they really don't agree. That picture of Billy in Impact Wrestling that Ian posted isn't doing him any favours either.

  4. English Madeleines? They used to do a similar one in a local bakery chain that has long been closed. Was pretty much an upside down cupcake covered in Jam and coconut with little icing holly on the top. Was a Christmas thing, obviously. One of my favs.

The real answer is that WWE create a name they can trademark.

Definitely that but it also gives them far more freedom of character. Otherwise, you'd just have all these serious wrestlers with real names in the image of their old man. You can't really get to cult leader who lives in a swamp ones you've acknowledged he's the spawn of fucking IRS.

It probably helps protect them when the old man gets yewtree'd or something too.

Dante signing with Team Taz was a really interesting and cool twist. Glad to see it and where it goes.

Yes, so much happened I completely forgot that. I was really surprised too but I like it. The Dante/Lio thing was odd anyway so he doesn't owe any loyalty to Lio. Him just walking over the table was such a tiny, dickish move, it was kinda cool.

I saw in another report after the A&E documentary series did well, and made them money, they are hoping to sell more content elsewhere. Also, the main person who made the documentaries was released over the summer.

Yeah, I've seen that. But given the things are made, it's odd to advertise, trail and then not show them.

  8. That absolutely flew by. What a bundle of fun.

Genuinely think my favourite part was seeing OC and BF do something that had nothing to do with HFO or CHAOS. Hoorah.

Good stuff from Miz, er MJF, and Punk to start the show. That crowd reaction to the mention of The Miz was spectacularly good. Didn't really need to hint at anyone else after that, they weren't topping it. "PG Punk" is such a good nickname. Simple stuff that hits the spot with the right people. MJF's promos are what they are but his facials when Punk was running him down were great. Nice to see someone selling this stuff.

Fair play to JR, he had another rough night, but his comment about the Savagery being back in Punk as he set up to hit the top rope elbow was great timing.

Bryan heeling it up again was such good shit. Good little match that didn't outstay it's welcome.

Anyone else fear for 2.0 when Eddie was sat gripping his fork? I cannot wait for him and Garcia. Didn't even know who Garcia was a few months ago. Eddie and Jericho isn't the dream team I'm looking for though, if that's where they're going.

Darby Allin running through Austin Gunn is the moment of the year. "Billy Gunn needs to pick up his kid." Funny stuff.

  9. I think a New Blood vs. Millionaire's Club feud was the way to go without a strong faction to carry Wargames but it's a shame its come around so quickly because they haven't been able to build anything hot going into the match other than Ciampa and Steiner 2.0 and there's inherent history between Ciampa and Gargano but everything else is cold because the show is still settling in. Don't think I'll go out of my way to find it.

Opening up the Cruiserweight title could have been an interesting development but it's just one of their one promo and announce it things. AEW do that often too. It's a lack of foresight and patience really. It's a shame.

I've not watched NXT for a couple of weeks. Still have enough interest to read what's happened but nothing is grabbing me. Wasn't completely against Steiner losing the title match but it's definitely added to my drop in interest. Should have struck when the iron was hot to really cement the change in NXT and then had the old guys as the heels after him leading to Wargames.

Ha! He also said he’d been hacked / someone used his account before deleting that as well. I saw Corbyn was taking legal advice so I’m delighted it happened!

He did and the wording of his apology still seems to suggest he's not admitting he did it. Hopefully his resignation/sacking from his position follows soon. Wonder if he's still amused no end?
