  1. Yeah, you're completely right. If it weren't for Callis' personal relationship with New Japan it would be a complete non-starter. But him being best buds with Kenny Omega, and to a lesser extent, Chris Jericho, can't hurt in the slightest.

I would suggest that Impact has a much bigger footprint than ROH internationally, but is it enough?

The whole wrestling world is a bit WWE vs the world at the moment, and seeing that Impact managed to work with both AAA and The Crash at the same time, anything is possible I suppose.

Without going into spoiler territory, the latest tapings didn't seem to feature as many international imports as there have been. It would not surprise me in the slightest if Callis sacked off AAA as a condition for working with New Japan.

  2. All I've heard is some hardcore fans commenting online that this have been their "best set of tapings in years." But of course, being hardcore fans, you're never sure what to believe.

Its good to see they haven't gone for another reboot though. The last thing they needed was another 'new era', and D'amore and Callis have already made it clear they won't be appearing on TV.

Its evident they're getting rid of the big earners off the wage bill, with no intention of offering them anywhere near what they were on.

I'm in two minds about this, as its obvious that Anthem want a company that's not haemorrhaging money. That in itself is perfectly understandable.

But yet, when you consider how much star power they've lost since 2012, its pretty scary.

If I had to hazard a guess, they're looking to build up from pretty much scratch. Don Callis and D'amore are men who've been successful in business ventures outside of wrestling, so they're far from stupid.

I would hope they would be in a position to bring in some of the indy darlings such as Will Ospreay and maybe even Kenny Omega, who knows, for the next set of tapings. They'd be silly not to use some of the freed up cash to freshen up the taping schedule though. These 5-6 week tapings are brutal.

JJ Dillon's recent podcast on his departure from the WWF in 1996 is great. Highly recommended and quite manageable at less than an hour in length too.

Is it still no one cares enough about tna to be spoiler tag things? Wanna discuss the tapings

To be honest, I've long given up giving any real consideration to Impact spoilers. They almost always sound like a clusterfuck when reading the fan reports, but inevitably make at least some sense by the time its on tv (that feels like years later).

The one thing they really need to sort out is these marathon tapings. I understand they're cost effective, but fuck me, there's a problem when you're taping tv three months in advance. You just lose any buzz that you've generated.

Austin Aries' return generated some talk this week, but there's a 9 day gap even until that's broadcast. You just lose any traction you may have created. Shame.

From my understanding Jazzy, TNA agreed to allow (to paraphrase) workers to use gimmicks after leaving the company as long as they weren't straight copies. Hence Woken rather than Broken.

I don't think there's any issue with him continuing to use 'broken' but as with most things in the WWE over the years, there's an insistence that at least some aspects need to be changed so they can claim it as their own. A bit Road Warriors/LOD if you will.

I've started watching Still Game again and think I have found it funnier second time around. Without going all 'This song is ALL ABOUT ME', I do think it really hits quite a profound level in what the relationship is like between two best friends, obviously while being incredibly funny while at it. At a time when I am increasingly finding main characters on TV utterly dislikable, it's very pleasant to have two who you can root for again.

I've only recently discovered this show by accident on Netflix, but me and the mrs and flew through it over the Christmas break. I'd have to echo what you say really, genuinely funny yet pretty simplistic without being broad on a Mrs Brown's Boys level.

I don't think there's been an episode we haven't enjoyed, although the theme tune change for series 7 was a bit of a shock. Winston is my favourite character.

I've always wanted to listen to more Pritchard podcasts but the length of them puts me off, a 5 hour hour podcast who the fuck has got time for that. Just listened to the SCG Pillman podcast on Liams new book, sounds like this is a must buy I wasnt sold on it originally as Pillman was never one of my faves although I was intrigued by the loose cannon stuff back then but it sounds fantastic.

I've started to become more selective in what podcasts I listen to. Gone are the days when I'd automatically listen to Austin, Cabana or JR's every week as the market has become so saturated and there's only so many commuting hours in a week.

As I generally have much much more interest in the WWF pre-2001, I haven't bothered with the Bruce Pritchard episodes that look at events/careers since then. I tend to look what topic/guest they have on and decide on the basis of that. I enjoyed the Jericho podcast with Callis/D'amore but that was the first of his I'd listened to in months.

I'm a big fan of The Lapsed Fan but those are even longer than Bruce Pritchard's. Their series on Montreal was brilliant though.

Budget isn't everything. Being smarter with how they spend the money and a compelling product should see them good for a while.
Naively, perhaps, I am remaining optimistic.

I keep doing this to myself, but I'm stopping short this time. I'll see how it plays out.

I wouldn't rule out a Jericho appearance though, especially if they hold some tapings in Winnipeg sometime this year.

Personally, I fear that D'Amore and Callis are of the modern wrestling (aka Indy wank) mould and it will become NJPW-lite instead of WWE-lite.

I quite like Eli Drake, he's good on the mic and a bit old school in that regard. I give much less of a shit about workrate than most fans though, which puts me in the minority I know.

I also like what they're doing with the NWA. Without a TV deal, I can certainly see some kind of relationship developing with Impact though. Billy Corgan seemed to be making some noises in that direction recently.

I really don't see why Jericho or anyone of note or value would bother getting involved with Impact these days. Up to a couple of years ago, sure. But now- what's the point? They are sadly nothing more than a glorified indy show with a little TV deal. They were *the* place to be if you were a former WWE/ECW/WCW guy without a contract at Stamford or if you were an exciting indy talent that WWE didn't see anything in. Their in-ring product was much more exciting than WWE's for many years.

Now it no longer has that appeal. WWE hoovers up the best indy talent and the ones they don't bother with (along with former WWE guys) wrestle for a combination of ROH, New Japan and the top indy (inc British) promotions instead. Their appeal of having the best in-ring talent is now covered by everyone else- those already mentioned plus WWE and NXT.

I think you've answered your own question there. Is there a bigger challenge in wrestling than getting some buzz around Impact again? I can see why it would appeal, plus there's the Canadian aspect.

So is that in the arena? or in the garden? I reckon it'll draw about the same

James Storm has officially left and his contract was apparently between $150k-$200k a year. Absolutely ridiculous

$3-4k a week for 5-6 weeks work a year.  Its no wonder they were late paying wages under Dixie Carter's reign.

Whatever you may think of Anthem, at least they're more realistic in a business sense. There's no chance a company of that size/stature should be paying so much.

People aren't wrong to say they're regressing, but fuck me, there's also pie in the sky thinking isn't there? If they can save a few bob in tax by filming in Canada, so be it.

The biggest problem was that when they were getting it right much of the time, no-one was tuning in to see it.  There was a year or two of good TV, well developed storylines and characters, and sensible booking - and yet as they'd destroyed so much goodwill beforehand, no-one gave a toss.

Sell the Broken Universe and video library to Vince (if he's still interested in either), and just be done with it.

What I've really noticed over recent months is that mud really sticks doesn't it?

In any argument/debate online, someone will bring up late pay, even though I don't think its been an issue at all since Anthem took over.

Sadly for TNA, and rightly or wrongly (as in life) anything negative they do is blown up whereas anything positive is largely hidden among their small fanbase. This is just the latest example.

This weekend, for the first time, I'm starting to think it may be time to give it all up.

I get no pleasure in saying that, seeing as Impact is the only show I watch on an even remotely regular basis. But there are too many people out there now who will never give it another chance, that's the bottom line. You can't run a company if the potential audience doesn't want to know.

I could see Scott D'amore etc be more willing to sell to New Japan than Vince though. Fuck em.
