Has anyone here ever completed a supporting statement for a role? Apparently this is not a cover letter, I initially thought they were one and the same. It's for a permanent council role that I currently do on a temp basis. I'm just completely stumped on how I should lay this out/what specifically I should be writing. Any help is appreciated!

Employers asking for this crap annoys me. Google 'personal statement', UCAS asks for something like this when students apply to Uni, so there is some good guides for pulling one together

I like your optimism of being able to treat yourself once a baby arrives 😂

Having just looked at the prices of a buggy and a car seat for the first time, I take your point! At least they are free to feed for the first 6 months!

On the subject of watches, are android based watches any good? Wouldn't mind something to help track my sleep, steps, heart rate etc

Have a look at the Huawei Watch GT 2. I think it looks great!

  4. I have 1 smart watch in my collection - a Huawei Watch 2 Classic. I'm no fitness freak, but I do like 2 features - inbuilt NFC so I can pay for stuff without getting my phone or wallet out and also handy for skipping through music on the tube when I want to keep my phone in my pocket.

  5. I liked @BigJag's watch box, so I ordered one.....as well as the Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 from Jomashop. I need to stop online shopping during lockdown! I think this will be my last watch purchase until I can afford the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16, but that's over 3 grand and this one was just over 300. Maybe that will be a 40th birthday present to myself!

    You've woo'd me MPDTT.

Seriously, the problem is you buy a 'gateway' mechanical watch like a Seiko 5 or an Orient Mako II for £100....then it ends up becoming an expensive hobby when you get the bug!

People still wear watches in 2020? Complete waste of money, just look at the microwave or your VHS recorder if you're bothered about what time it is.

    Absolutely!

I totally understand why the Apple Watch now out sells all Swiss watches combined, but for many men, horology enthusiasts or fashionistas, watches are a key part of their attire - no matter the cost of the timepiece.

There is an art to, and significant legacy of horology. While we can all tell the time by pulling our phones out of our pockets, watches give many people a lot of joy. There remains a huge market out there for traditional watches.

No worries. I'll have to look out for that quickset feature in the future.

Anyone have an opinion on Casio G Shocks?

I'm on the lookout for one of these

It's much nicer than the one that is actually an official commemorative Transformers piece.

G-Shocks have been going for nearly 40 years! @BigJag - if you want to know more about them, then TGV at Urban Gentry did a whole video on the line and its history at this link.

How indicative of quality in a mechanical watch is the date function? Most watches I come across. The date can only be adjusted by winding the whole mechanism through a 24hr cycle. I do remember being able to pull out the winder one notch to adjust just the date on a watch a number of years ago. As lways thought that was a cool and desirable feature. Haven't found a watch that does that since. TyPulling it out a further notch adjusted the time.

All of my mechanical watches have this feature - no need to cycle continiously through a 24 hour cycle, I just pull out the crown an extra notch to adjust the date. This feature is called quickset, so look for that when selecting a watch.

It's not a feature reserved for expensive watches. My Bambino cost £100 and has quickset. Also take a look at the Mako II Diver - priced starting at £125. Looks amazing and also has quickset for both day and date - that feature is demonstrated in this video, although this guy has a Spanish version of the watch for some reason:

  11. I'm a fan of TGV's channel. This video in particular is great for anyone looking to buy their first entry-level proper mechanical watch. Most of these are under £150, some under £100.

Waaahey! After applying for 60+ jobs since my redundancy at the end of last year, I got a phone call today offering me the job I video interviewed for only yesterday. I'll be working days (in my old place I worked from 10pm to 7am five nights a week for almost a full fucking decade), it's Mon-Fri so no weekends, bank holidays off and all for more money. Over the moon.

    Congratulations!

Cheers for coming back on that. I'm trying to understand if they're more a gimmick watch. How do the feel? Robust , Solid? That LED one looks fantastic in the pictures. I generally wear a £50 G Shock. Which does what it says on the tin. It's not showy and I'm not afraid of it getting damaged.  Is that something I'd need to be wary of with a Tokyo flash one?

I have other dress watches and a Fitbit Blaze. I've not been impressed by the Fitbit. It has pretty much fallen apart. It's not like I've been rough with either.

The Tissot is my favourite to wear when going out.

I think you need a second watch holder....but a nice problem to have! Nice Tissot....I've been considering buying a Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80, a nice heritage line from a heritage brand & a cool movement.

  14. OK, right now I'm wearing the Orient Bambino V3 Gen 2, not an expensive watch, but was my first proper automatic I bought back in 2017. One of 2 Orient's I own, the second being the Orient Star Retrograde.

  15. To the surprise of unquestionably everyone, I'm really surprised by the rave reviews this PPV is getting. Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind, struggling to stay awake and peeved it's not in Vegas and I had to refund my flight and ticket.....but I wasn't blown away like I have been for all their PPVs up to this point. I need to go back and watch it again.

The opener would have been great if they'd binned all the outside interference- there were more than enough folks involved from the outset.

MJF and Jungle Boy was good....that poison Rana on the apron looked fab, as was MJFs selling. Could be the start of a great long term rivalry.

Statlander / Ford and Spears / Dustin wasn't PPV worthy and all that crap with Spears felt like WWE booking.

I enjoyed Cody and Archer. I have high Hope's that this belt will be treated as a legitimate second title like the IWGP Intercontinental title and not like the WWE Intercontinental title. The right guy went over, but I'd liked them to have made a bigger deal of the victory - I think they cut to the next video package far too quickly. The match would have been better with less of the Arn /Jake / Tyson shenanigans.

Hikaru Shida and Nyla Rose was good, surprising outcome, both worked hard.....but too many gimmick matches on this show possibly?

Brodie Lee and Jon Moxley was better than I expected. I don't think Brodie Lee should have been in that spot to begin with, but I enjoyed the match in itself, particularly the finish.

Stadium Stampede. Genius, but fighting to stay awake and dozing off throughout. I agree with Supremo about Sammi, just wow! The pool of reincarnation had me in stitches, as did the golf cart spot, the white line painted on Jericho, the bar scene, the horse, the moonsault off the goal thingy, the 100 yard suplexes and the crazy finish. Kenny Omega is so versatile - he can shine in almost any kind of match. Worth the PPV price alone. Everyone in it looked like they were having a blast.

Gutted to read this morning that Fyter Fest was going to be in London.

To be fair, the rest of the HR team were lovely, but it was always the office staff and management who created the Us and Them mentality.  The way they used Execuspeak to buzzword their superiority over the proles was always hilarious.

When I was an HR Manager for one of the big 4 supermarkets, I had an USDAW union rep work really well with me - it is very much possible for both functions to do good work together and not fall into the 'us and them' mindset - resolving matters informally before they materialise into formal grievances and disciplinary hearings. I've also found union reps much more pragmatic when dealing with collective consultations - far more simplistic that electing employee representatives. I've also fired a union rep for theft, who had spent the previous year actively trying to be a thorn in the side of the business. Like all functions - there will always be the good and the bad.
