Rey Mysterio being on the technically first AEW show is always a crazy bit of trivia. He didn't look like a bellend either in his Wolverine cosplay. It is a huge what if but I think he only did the indies to get WWE to notice him again. AEW would've booked Dom if he asked them to, He chose WWE. I think as said before in this thread, He is WWE-Pilled, he's been there for for 20+ years apart from 4 years away in the indies, So its no surprise he went back in 2018.

Thing is, he may have good reason to be WWE-Pilled: he probably doesn't think he's got anything left to prove. He's earned his place in wrestling history, he's been around long enough that the kids who grew up idolising him are now adults taking their own kids to see him, and he has a new lease of life. How many wrestlers can anyone name who still impress crowds and somehow stay somewhat relevant thirty or so years into their career? Rey has always known his place in the grand scheme of things and the expectations fans have of him, and he's probably never really felt the need to exceed that.

That's not to say it's not a shame he didn't stick around in AEW - there must have been so much he could do there - but people's motivations in their careers vary, and maybe he feels secure enough when he looks back on his career, thinks he's left a pretty respectable legacy in terms of body of work and influence on later generations, and doesn't feel the need to do more, especially in a much more physically-demanding promotion like AEW.

It's not a shame he didn't stick around in AEW. It's a fucking blessing. What were we missing out on? The great promos? All those great stories? 17 spots where people fall onto the middle rope? 

He is absolutely where he should be. Having matches that are miraculous given the state of his knees, but mediocre nonetheless, and getting his green kid over and massively improving the lad as a wrestler. Everyone wins. Especially me, because I don't have to watch him.

I'm sure he'd have had some great matches with people he'd never worked before, and I'm sure he'd have been booked well. That said, you watch more AEW, more wrestling than I do, so I'll take your word for it.

Has anybody lost as many matches as he did while he was WWE Champion? He's a heck of an athlete and has lasted much longer than anybdy thought he would given the state his knees must be in, but he's just having the same match he's almost always had in WWE at 80% of the original speed, or in a tag team so he can just hit his spots to pop the crowd. I'm sure the mask sales will be in safe hands with Penta and Rey Fenix on hand, or El Grande Americano. It's a testament to his longevity that the number of times they've tried to pension him off before with Sin Cara etc it's gone tits up and they've gone back to him. It's also weird that he's in the Hall Of Fame but still an active member of the roster.
