Magazine Mayhem!

I'm gonna have a wander into town tommorow and purchase a magazine. This thread and the one Super posted has made me want a mag or two, I do love magazines to be fair but haven't bought one for a few weeks.

I mentioned it in the other mag thread but I bought wrestling magazines religiously when I was younger, the late run WCW one, both WWE ones, PS and Total Wrestling (both of which were amalgamated and became FSM)

I love picking up Inside The Ropes when I can as it gives me instant flashbacks of reading PS but the thin quality of the mag often doesn’t justify the £6 price tag

WrestleTalk was a good read anytime I got it but again the £6 pricing was often a put off as was the fact it was bi-monthly which is sadly why it appears to have quietly folded as it’s not been on the shelves in the former WH Smith since before Christmas

Stevenage market had a great stall where unsold magazines which were meant to be returned to the wholesalers got a bit lost on the way so you could get stuff for about 50p. It was a few months old, but then again it was already outdated when it got to the shops here. God only know what they'd think when I'd walk off with a handful of Apter mags, the latest Flex (to find out about WBF) and a couple of Penthouses.

I did wonder about Wrestletalk. A bit of a shame as it was good quality, certainly survived a bath time read over Inside the Ropes, the only thing I hated was the layout. Awfully small print, and at times articles just full of text but without any pics. It really didn't make for an aesthetically pleasing read at times,

Most of them were bought at the time between 1990 and 1994 before I discovered newsletters like the Observer and Torch (and then the internet.)

The only R.Kive type boxes I would gladly carry around and sort through for hours

@NeverYieldplease let us know which ones you get, I didn't know Wrestletalk had folded but I guess it's unfortunately not a surprise given its price tag and with the fairly nice audience and overall price tag for something so thin that a leaflet from the local Chinese takeaway is thicker in comparison 

Ended up getting the Boxing News as ive had a subscription to that for many many years in the past but this is my first time buying it since its gone monthly

Also Inside the Ropes, had a little flick through PWI too.

There's loads of non-wrestling related bits I felt like getting also 🤣

I started watching in 90 and bought every magazine I could.

there used to be a shop near me in Hull that sold off magazines that hadn’t sold in the big shops. I bought thousands! 
I’d read everything covered to cover. I remember at one point in the late 90’s buying 14 different wrestling magazines a month.

for me it was “Powerslam Thursday”, the last Thursday of the month but it was generally “Powerslam Monday after” as it was rarely out on the Thurs. 

I lived in a village outside the city and I’d always do the 30 mile round trip, sometimes on the bus, just to see if it was out on the Thurs. 

it’s hard to state how much I owe to Fin Martin and the crew. My life was up and down, sometimes with no place to live but I could always switch off with powerslam .

 

apart from that I LOVED WCW magazine, with PWi being up there at times. PWI 92-96 really upped their game. 
 

I was on eBay from 99 and I used to buy magazine collections. I’d get a years worth of WWF magazine for £3, but it was never pre 90. I ended up with too many by 2004 so started selling them off. I’ve sold most off over the years. 
My mum has just passed away so I’ve grabbed the last bit from there. I have a real mix. It’s interesting finding multiples of the alter mags from 91.

i always read every magazine cover to cover (along with wrestling observer). 
I have so much wrestle crap in my head. I watch WSI with James or listen to Conrad and often find myself correcting them or getting wound up when they struggle for facts. 
 

It was the late 2000’s with the internet getting bigger that the magazines dropped off for me. I look back to the 90’s incredibly fondly and I can picture where I was when I purchased and read specific magazines. 
I could rant on forever.

The WCW 1998 year in review mag remains my favourite wrestling publication of all time. Yes there was kayfabe bollocks throughout (for e.g: Syxx has left the Wolfpac, because they couldn’t say Sean Waltman got fired and went back to WWF) but the monthly rundowns of the happenings on Nitro and Thunder and the PPVs were pretty immersive, certainly to someone who, in 1999, couldn’t easily access WCW content until Warner Home Video started releasing a few of the PPVs in a half-arsed way on VHS later in the year.

The photography was so high-quality and gorgeous-looking throughout too, Colin Bowman really is an unsung hero of the entire industry. Ironically, I decided to start buying WCW Magazine every month on the strength of the 1998 special issue, but the first of the monthlies was the inaugural revamp one where the publishing went in-house, they started using that peculiar not-seen-on-TV-hardly WCW logo on the cover, and some of the articles and interviews had a kind of insider edge or snark to them, I remember WWF, Vince etc being mentioned within the pages fairly often.

I stuck with it for eight or nine months alongside PowerSlam, but eventually dropped it and solely bought PS every month. I just wish I’d been a WCW nut a good year or more earlier so I could have read more of those class Bowman mags.

Yep - I think this was the last issue of the series. Issue 1 had Bret on the cover, No.2 was Mr Perfect and then this one. It was a weird knock-off Powerslam (still known as Superstars of Wrestling) type Brit mag. I know a lot of these mags came out in the 91/92 boom period (there was another Brit mag similar to this - full of competition phonelines which articles by The Convict - picture of bloke with a balaclava on and by the editor who was a bird in sunglasses and a cowboy hat) but it was quite a decision to produce one in the latter months of 1993 when the popularity of it was on it's arse in the UK - no wonder it only went for 3 issues.

Also these Wrestling Mania mags sometimes fetch an all price on Ebay.
