I used to play with my mates quite a bit a few years ago. About once a week for about 3 years. But in the past 4 years i've only played a handful of times. When playing with my mates i got good at reading them and so used to do well.

I've played at the casino once or twice and done so-so, i've played online and done terrible.

I am thinking about taking it up again.

So i am just wondering if there are any players on here who can offer any advise or suggestions for playing in person or online.

I am told that getting reads is very important but outside of my mates its something that i can't do well.

Anyway, have at it with your success/disaster stories.

Whoever told you that 'reads' are important, is lying. Its a tiny part of the game. Spotting physical 'tells' isnt a big part in making someone successful. Betting patterns and forming hand ranges for certain people are the two main keys to poker. If you play online, using a database (like Holdem Manager) is almost essential. It gathers information about every player from every hand you played. From these stats you can build a good picture of what sort of player youre playing against, and adjust accordingly.

If you are wanting to play on a serious level (ie, to constantly make money), then multitabling is essential. Playing anywhere between 5-20 tables at the same time is common.

Theres loads of other things to consider; bankroll management, tilt control, game selection, but these arent really important (and neither is the multitabling), if all youre after is a few hours entertainment a couple of nights a week.

Hardcore online poker playing is a fantastic way to make the game not fun, huh? They've done an impressive job of making poker playing into a really boring job.

My favourite poker players to watch play have loads of fun stories about crazy bets on all types of shit and generally posses a personality. The best online player is probably a former actuary or some shit. Awful state of affairs.

My advice is if you want to have fun, play with real people.

The difference is that the professional online players rely entirely on making money from playing poker. The majority of players you see on TV dont. Most of them have sweet sponsership deals, which allow them to piss about on TV (which they treat as advertising and marketing themselves). If youre looking to make a consistent amount of money from poker, you have to put in lots of volume.

As I said before, if you just want a bit of fun, then play with your mates.

Doesn't always work like that - I enjoyed playing with my mates for a good while, but then they stopped enjoying it because I took it more seriously. However, not serious enough to want to spend 18 hours a day trying to make a living out of it.

RancidPunx, I go to the casino to play tourneys (I try to go at least once a week) that aren't too expensive to buy-in, and I enjoy that. You end up seeing a lot of the same people so you don't get too intimidated and you also can learn how they play. I'm so-so online but I don't play online often enough to be consistently getting something out of it. I'm no expert but you can't really say one part of the game is more important than the other - everybody plays differently, everybody has strengths and weaknesses and its that you have to remember as you watch others play on the table, rather than trying to get too bogged down on wondering why they have certain body language or whatever.
