1SinN6
...ahhh just read the actual statement and Joey says he isn't retiring. Hopefully he'll continue to lose weight and goto 205. Â I don't think he'll do anything noteworthy on 205 if he even gets to 205. Â That said i think Bonner vs Beltran at 205 could have been nice. mikey
Â For me, it's what is missing from MMA. I love fat man fights. Instead of sticking these guys in a shit match with Fedor, PRIDE should have stuck these guys in their own division. This is why DREAM's Super Hulk Tournament was such a disappointment to me. Hong-Man Choi, Bob Sapp and Jan Nortje in the same tournament and they still didn't get it right.
mikey
In other news, catching up on all the UFC I missed in December and January whilst I have this wonderful throat infection. Now everything's on TV, this is a very difficult task. Did Mayhem Miller get released after his TUF finale loss to Bisping?
Paid Members GlennCullen Posted February 2, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted February 2, 2012 just found out that Nate Diaz/Jim Miller is headlining the 3rd Fox show! I didn't realise they were headlining, that's a massive step up for those guys. It pretty much has to confirm that the winner is gonna fight the winner of Henderson/Edgar too. Gonna be great! ...a Thiago Silva/Brandon Vera rematch is booked for May 15th too, the build up for this one is gonna get f'n nasty. Outstanding.  Looking forward to the fight but headliner? Really. It shows that UFC have decided they can get ratings on Fox based on the brand instead of having to give up PPV revenue generating fights but really, going from JDS vs Cain to Diaz vs Miller in 3 shows is a bit of a stretch. I would've been happy with it as a co-main, but there you go.

Building a brand is far more benificial long term than trying to get their bigger names guys over. A fight like Miller/Diaz will be fireworks and will certainly leave a good impression on people curious about the sport.
Paid Members Snake Plissken Posted February 2, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted February 2, 2012 I actually thinks its a clever mover, the Miller/Diaz fight is guaranteed to be a decent fight, your not going to see any dull lay and pray here. Also it's going to be 5 rounds instead of three so more for your money, although I don't see it going that long. Also, Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson on the card, it's going to be a great night. I do think that you still need names though to build as franchise players in the mainstream, and as intriguing a character as Diaz is I don't know if he's right for this, same with Miller. Someone like Anthony Pettis would've been perfect for it.  Imagine if the Hendo/Rua fight had been on Fox...
Paid Members lambyUK Posted February 2, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted February 2, 2012 Am I the only one completely bewildered that Thiago Silva still has a job? The man gave fucking fake piss for fucks sake. Not only did he cheat, he tired to cheat cheating!!!
Kenny McBride
Diaz has already headlined Fight Nights what, three times? Four times? He's a TUF guy so he's recognisable. He's a guaranteed good fight. He gives them a great excuse to give Nick some air time. Miller is a really exciting guy too with a great look. And that fight is for a shot at the most exciting division in the company right now. They're not quite at the level of Rashad, but I see nothing wrong with putting them out there on a show like that. They sure as hell don't want another show on Fox as lifeless as the one they just had. When you're talking about the calibre of fights on Fox, you need to remember that the JDS/Cain fight was all about making a big splash and ideally creating Velasquez as a mainstream Latino megastar, rather than the marginal draw he was before it. Unless they put the flyweight final on Fox (a great idea, in my opinion), I doubt we'll see another title fight on free TV for a very long time. Â I've said this before but one title fight I think would make sense on FOX would be Cruz vs Faber 3. Neither guy is a big draw on PPV yet and with the TUF they're coaching due to air on FX, a FOX owned station, it would make sense to have their fight be on FOX I reckon. The lighter weights should deffo be given a strong platform on these big FOX shows imo. If each FOX show has 3 fights then at least one should be a 155 or lower fight because you can usually rely on them to give a good fight plus they need the exposure more imo. Â A fight like Diaz vs Miller is perfect for FOX to get some of the spotlight on the smaller fighters plus get people interested in one of them fighting the champ (and most importantly paying to see it). I think that's what these FOX shows will be mainly, contender fights which will reach a big audience and hopefully be exciting enough to get people interested enough to pay to see the winner fight for the title. jimufctna24
I have no problem with Nate vs Miller on FOX but headlining? Â I would have Faber vs Cruz like noted above or Aldo defending his belt.
Mr Tibbs
I was really shocked by this move because this is not a main event that should be on a Fox Special. An FX show, yes but not a Fox special. Â This could prove a disaster for the UFC. They need to draw ratings with this show and it has been shown time and time again that stars and interesting scenarios draw ratings. While Miller Vs Diaz will be a great fight I don't think it will draw what needs to be drawn for a Fox show. The UFC could go in the space of three shows from looking like a very hot property to a damp squid. That's not overstating the issue. This is a time when the UFC needs to show Fox that the price that it paid for the 7 year deal was worth the investment. Not risking a bad rating to show Fox that the UFC brand will draw, because we know by past ratings that this is not the case. Â Yes the UFC does need to expand it's brand awareness, but it needs to do so by putting intriging fights it main events with stars who will draw. It's fine to put Diaz and Miller as the 3rd, maybe the 2nd match on the show but not in the main event. Â If you put the stars in the main event then the casual audience they will draw will then be exposed to the likes of Miller and Diaz. This in turn could mean that they become stars (or start on that path) and will hopefully allow the UFC to put them in higher positions in the future. METAL ON METAL
I can't see why people are bitching about this, the UFC are trying to build new stars (which is something they get slagged off for not trying to do) and this would go a long way in establishing new fighters in the average fans mind. Â Not to mention the winner of this fight will very likely be the next to fight for the LW title, having Diaz/Miller headlining a Fox show will do nothing but help the buyrate for that eventual show be even bigger. Â I see no problem with it at all, after all UFC can't afford to keep putting on PPV headlining cards on Fox every single show and its not like people in the US (UFC's key market) are even paying for this show. jimufctna24
I have finally realised who Ariel Helwani reminds me of. Â Â Noting to do with apperence just his way of interviewing.
kev2050
War Machine, who was scheduled to be in the next bellator tournament fighting Ben Saunders, has tweeted to say he's going back to jail for another year for "some old bullshit". Â Shame. I know he's mental, and some people don't like him, but i think he is a good fighter to watch, and bellator will be poorer without him.
