I rented from my library a few weeks ago the Ultimate Fighting Championship: Official Fan's Guide which I finished reading a few weeks ago but forgot to review it. The Ultimate Fighting Championship: Official Fan's Guide was a easy going guide divided into various topics such as Top Ten UFC Knockouts of all time, Top Ten UFC Submissions of all Time and UFC Classic Fights. The choices in most of these categories are the right ones but there are some poor ones as well like no inclusion of Dan Henderson's brutal KO of Michael Bisping at UFC 100 in the Top Ten UFC Knockouts of all time chapter while Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn at UFC 58 and Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama from UFC 120 somehow make the UFC Classic Fights chapter. Here are the top ten fights contained in the UFC Classic Fights chapter in the order they appear:

Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar I, The Ultimate Fighter Finale

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen, UFC 117

Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg, UFC 52

Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva, UFC 79

Georges St-Pierre vs. BJ Penn, UFC 58

Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II, UFC 100

Antonio Nogueira vs. Randy Couture, UFC 102

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II, UFC 125

Forrest Griffin vs. Quinton Jackson, UFC 86

Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama, UFC 120

Quotes, fights and their descriptions repeat in some categories for example Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 makes the UFC Classic Fights, Top Ten UFC Submissions of all time and Top 10 UFC Comebacks of all time though rightly so in all three categories and the book is short (127 pages).

UFC seem quite biased when it comes to history. The top 100 fights blu-ray release neglects to include the likes of Frank Shamrock

Aye they are. Frank Shamrock is a good example. The UFC's Best of 2007 DVD ddin't include Randy Couture/Tim Sylvia like it should have.

Bingo, my first thought with that top 10 list was that fight should be on there, ahead of some of them at least.

I guess it depends on the criteria for what makes a 'classic'.

Yeah Randy vs Sylvia was a classic. I wouldn't call it a great fight. Aside from the opening 30 seconds, what actually happened in the fight wasn't that exciting. But it was a classic just for the situation of Randy's age, coming back from retirement/year long layoff and ultimately rescuing what was at the time a dire division from the clutches of Tim Sylvia. No-one thought it was possible. It should deffo have been on the Best of 07 DVD but Randy was at odds with Zuffa at the time so they pretended he didn't exist.

Oddly enough there were also no Anderson Silva fights on that Best of 2007 DVD. Silva/Franklin 2 should have been on there at least.

I knew Couture/Sylvia wasn't on the DVD due to Randy's falling out with Zuffa as wandshogun09 rightly says but until you said, I never noticed that it wasn't included in the top ten UFC Classic Fights chapter either. Again wandshogun 09 explains why it should have.

I've come up with eight fights for the UFC Classic Fights chapter. I'm missing two which aren't coming to mind yet but here is my list so far:

Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar I, The Ultimate Fighter Finale

Randy Couture vs. Pedro Rizzo I, UFC 31 (how the hell did this not make the cut?)

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II, UFC 125

Randy Couture vs. Tim Sylvia, UFC 68

Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva, UFC 79

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen, UFC 117

Antonio Nogueira vs. Randy Couture, UFC 102

Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II, UFC 100

Agreed on them Classic fights. Randy vs Rizzo one is one of my favourite old school fights ever and probably Randy's best along with the Nog fight. A few I'd add to that list

Frank Shamrock vs Tito Ortiz (UFC 21)

Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton 1 (UFC 34)

Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock 1 (UFC 40)

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 1 (UFC 47)

Matt Hughes vs Frank Trigg 2 (UFC 52)

Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin (UFC 116)

Dan Henderson vs Shogun Rua (UFC 139)

It's a right battle of attrition. One of the best ever MMA fights.

Frank Shamrock vs Tito Ortiz (UFC 21)

Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton 1 (UFC 34)

Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock 1 (UFC 40)

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 1 (UFC 47)

Matt Hughes vs Frank Trigg 2 (UFC 52)

Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin (UFC 116)

Dan Henderson vs Shogun Rua (UFC 139)

Fuck I knocked off Hughes/Trigg 2 by mistake. Hughes/Newton 1 is a nice shout. The finish is rightly remembered but so should the action leading up to it.

New List:

Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar I, The Ultimate Fighter Finale

Randy Couture vs. Pedro Rizzo I, UFC 31

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II, UFC 125

Randy Couture vs. Tim Sylvia, UFC 68

Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva, UFC 79

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen, UFC 117

Antonio Nogueira vs. Randy Couture, UFC 102

Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II, UFC 100

Matt Hughes vs Frank Trigg 2, UFC 52

Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton 1, UFC 34

The jap mixed rules fights annoy me with one 3 or 5 minute round of Kickboxing followed by a 10 minute MMA rules round. I skip the pro wrestling stuff anyway, it's just gymnastics for the most part. Never mind the fixed MMA fights they sometimes have, which they don't class as pro wrestling.

The mixed rules fight last year (well, the one I remember, it was a long bloody show) was insane; one of them was throwing dropkicks and stuff like that, while backing away the rest of the time. It was very odd indeed.

I'm actually looking forward to two of the pro wrestling matches, the Josh Barnett one because it might be quite good, and one with two guys who have had virtually no pro wrestling experience, which should be hilariously poor.

I think it will break the show Up a bit really, which it needs with the length it's going.

get your fast-forward buttons ready, Dream's New Year's Eve show is set to last 9 hours!!

Will the airing time over here be during the day on New Years Eve? I'm sure I remember watching most of it live through the morning into the afternoon

yeh, i think the show takes place around 11am UK time on New Year's Eve...i remember being on the Sherdog boards on a PbP back in the day getting results for the 3 big new years eve shows in Japan, it was before the time where you could get a quality rip the next day so i just followed play-by-plays...wouldn't do it now, but it was exciting as shit back then.
