  3. My interest in WWE probably began to wane in 2009/10. I'd stopped watching Raw and Smackdown regularly a couple of years before that, probably more due to leaving uni and entering the real world of full time work than due to WWE content.

Like a few others, by 2009/10 I'd grown tired of the commentary, mid-carders winning "world" titles with increasing frequency, scheduled theme PPV's, the "WWE universe".

Raw going three hours every week in 2012 was a killer. It's just too long for a weekly show. And now with NXT, NXT:Takeovers, NXT:UK etc in addition to Smackdown, there's probably too much new WWE content to try and follow even if I wanted to get back into it.

The alternatives don't really do it for me either. I did enjoy NWA Powerrr for the most part, but I never connected with Japanese wrestling and, while I tried to give AEW a go, it just isn't different enough to WWE for my liking (they weren't helped by the battle royal on the first PPV, which did not make a good first impression on me at all!).

Right now, I've still got a WWE Network subscription, but I'm almost exclusively watching old stuff from when I did care. I'll likely cancel it after Wrestlemania, and although I've cancelled and re-subscribed before, this could be the final cancellation.

Velocity was great for the occasional appearance of an Indy guy as others have stated but my favourite was Matt Hardy V1 wrestling an unsigned Paul London, and giving him a competitive match, far more give and take than most enhancement matches. Really good fun.

There's a similarly good Perry Saturn vs Paul London match out there (on Metal, not Velocity) from probably a year or so before that.

I'm not sure I see the confusion. They're pretty clearly members of the Dark Order. They make a point of putting the masks on when they wrestle. They're a lower/mid-card level team, but keeping their identities.

It's a bit like looking at the nWo and going 'So why is the sixth member called Syxx, but the seventh member isn't called Seven? Are we supposed to be figuring out a longer-term storyline here?'

I absolutely got they are part of the Dark Order, but as someone just about completely new to the TV show, I didn't get why they put their masks on at ringside, rather than have them on when they were walking to the ring.

Your explanation suggests that the Dark Order don't all wear masks so I thought there could be some significance behind it.

  20. 2 minutes ago, Chris B said:

Not directly. But then the masks appear to be a show of commitment rather than a must-have. Some members wear them all the time, some put them on to wrestle, and at least one doesn't wear one at all. Possibly partly that they were a team before they joined the Order - it's not meant to be a mystery who they are. They're wearing them as an affiliation point.

    Cheers.

I can only assume then that it is meant to be slightly vague and uncertain to get the regular fans thinking for a longer term storyline?

As a lapsed long term wrestling fan I was thinking either Al Snow as Avatar or the Killer Bees (then I noticed one of the AEW lads had long hair but not the other)

  21. I skimmed through what I think is last weeks episode earlier (the Bischoff one).

I haven't seen any AEW since the PPV which had Dustin vs Cody and like WWE, it's not for me any more.

Anyhow, quick question - is there a reason that Silver and Reynolds enter the ring without masks the put them on? I don't think it was explained during the match.

I love this. I remember seeing pictures of it in magazines at the time and thinking 'eh?'.

Kamala versus Daniel Bryan in 2006 for the ROH World Title. It's the main event at an indie show and the big man has his working boots on.

Well, he doesn't have any boots on, but he puts the effort in.

I woukd never have envisioned those two in the same ring, but as unique as that match is, IMO most of it epitomises the worst of indie wrestling.

Anyhow, air_raid has delightfully summarised Invasion of the Bodyslammers, but one of my most memorable Kamala moments to this day was from the same time, and is indeed one of my earliest wrestling memories ever, is Jerry Lawler claiming on commentary that Kamala ate Slick. Looking at him aged six years old I probably believed it!

Wasting this idea was one of the weirdest things from that time - you'd have thought 'Absolutely cannot be fired' would be great for storylines. I'd have loved to see him flouting the rules as much as possible, before panicking as time starts running out on the year.

I've argued this for years. WWF had squandered the true potential of the Invasion, and then followed that with wasting what could have been a great year long storyline to push someone to the top of the card. Even if it was Test.

I literally do not remember it being followed up in any manner following Survivor Series.
