  1. Definitely a 'Marmite' film. I really enjoyed it. Melissa George has become a pretty impressive 'scream queen'. That Christopher Smith is racking up quite a decent little CV, it will be interesting to see what he does next.

I thought that the fact that it got slung on the horror channel pretty quickly was a bad sign. I'll need to give it a go the next time it's on, which shouldn't be far away.
  2. I've been mulling over the idea of a Generico heel turn recently, on the basis that after his disgracefully short run with the TV belt, there doesn't seem a lot else for him to do in ROH as a babyface. He's a talented enough guy, I'm sure he could make it work.

As I've said before, I'm sure we're moving onto a Generico/Steen vs. Corino/Jacobs fued, which would probably see Generico help Steen, most likely at Final Battle, get one over on Corino and Jacobs and I suspect we'll then see that being the main fued of 2012.
  3. I didn't think the tag title match on that show was very good at all. I thought that the main event was match of the night actually. Richards/Strong was excellent, and a much more steady match than their FB match. As you said, the FB match had a much better 20 minutes, but they seemed to realise what went wrong last time out, and just built the finish really well this time. They totally murdered the match last time.

  4. yeh, what you have to understand is though that this was only his 2nd fight. People genuinely thought he was unstoppable at the time. The guys they were making him fight was ridiculous, the Japanese guys fighting him had to be genuinely bricking it.

No wonder they were bricking it. You could tell just looking at them that they didn't have a chance. It's the MMA equivalent of a Sid Justice vs. Glen Ruth match. PRIDE FC Shockwave 2002PRIDE's biggest show to date. Really been looking forward to seeing this show and it's a magnificent spectacle.Wanderlei Silva vs. Tatsuya IwasakiWanderlei Silva does yet another good and quick performance by just kneeing, punching and kicking the fuck out of his opponent. Iwasaki took the fight on short notice so I suppose you can't say much about him here, so lets just settle for saying a good outing for Silva. Daijiro Matsui vs. Jerrel Venetiaan"Due to time constraints we move to action in the third round."That is not pleasing me even in the slightest. Obviously I can't judge the fight, because I didn't actually see it. Although even though we miss two rounds, we still manage to see Matsui attempt a Dropkick. I suppose you're never going to be able to go a while Matsui fight without seeing that. Gary Goodridge vs. Lloyd Van DamsGary Goodridge gets Van Dams down and just punches the shit out of him and that, as they say, is that. I thought when they were in the clinch trying to take each other down, it was a fascinating sight. Goodridge really does have some brutal ground and pound though. His mocking before the final load of shots was brilliant. Semmy Schilt vs. Ernesto HoostShould be noted that this fight is under K-1 rules. I couldn't really call it either. I guess I'm just not used to this kind of thing. Hoost slowly but surely found his way through the reach of Semmy with some good body shots and hit some good lefts and rights, but Semmy always had an answer and used some good knees as well. If I had to guess I'd say Semmy Schilt won the fight. They call the fight a draw. Seems fair enough. Don Frye vs. Jerome Le BannerMore K-1 stuff going down here. Absolutely terrific show of striking from Le Banner here, and Quadros sums it up by saying "that was brutal". Frye looked in danger early and Banner just landed huge combos one after the other. Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera vs. Bob SappI can't ever remember going this mental watching a fight this old. Fuck me sideways. I was writing off Big Nog every which way here in the first round because of the ease at which Sapp was getting away from the bad positions because of his power, but then in the second round, things started to change a bit and you could feel it. The beating that Sapp laid on in the first round was vile and credit to Big Nog for not only getting out, but starting to look excellent in the second round and catching Sapp a few times in bad positions. LOVE the reaction of Rutten when he realises it's only a matter of time. Royce Gracie vs. Hirihiko YoshidaDid I get that right? Went all funny when the names came up but I'm sure that's what the name was. Well, that's... erm... interesting. Royce Gracie is upset and quite rightly so. I'll be fair to Yoshida and say that he looked very good here, as did Gracie with his persistance go at the leg of Yoshida. However, it's the hilarious decision of the referee that takes centre stage here.Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Mirko Cro CopSakuraba doesn't have much luck with injuries stopping fights, does he? This time it's the eye that does the damage. Well, it was Cro Cop that did damage to the eye, but you know what I mean. Cro Cop fought a good smart fight by using leg kicks on Sakuraba in order to stop the shoot. I actually thought that they would wind up leading to a stoppage. It was a shame that it ended when it did from the perspective that Sakuraba was beginning to come into things more and more, but it's a good thing that it was stopped because of the injury.
  5. PRIDE 21: Demolition

    Bob Sapp vs. Kiyoshi Tamura

Tamura couldn't do much about Wandy, so what the fuck was he going to do about Bob Sapp? Nothing much is your answer as Sapp runs right through a right hand and unloads on Tamura for the win. Unfair on Tamura having such a fight, and again there's not much I can say about Bob Sapp really.

    Labazanov Arhmed vs. Gary Goodridge

Arhmed seemed to almost completely give up on the idea of locking in a submission in the first round when Goodridge powered out of a couple of attempts with ease. Arhmed dominated large portions of the fight on the ground, but never really did much after the aformentioned attempts. Which was probably a good idea given the reason why he decided against it. Gary Goodridge wins the fight in the end thanks to a strong turnaround, but I honestly didn't think that he did enough here. It was reasonably close though, so hardly a robbery.

    Alex Stiebling vs. Anderson Silva

Aww fuck. Just when I was beginning to like Stiebling as well. The fight is ended by a cut which is made by a horrendous head kick by Silva. I mean "horrendous" in the best way possible. Silva just looked like the guy we know and love right now.

    Jeremy Horn vs. Gilbert Yvel

What's worth noting here is the much improved abilities of Yvel on the ground. Horn still found it far to easy to get him down to the ground, but while Yvel offered little resistance on the floor before, his defence was terrific here, and even showed some good counters and switches of position. Horn took some big shots from Yvel through the fight and had no interest in standing and fighting, and ate a LOT of knees going for the takedowns as a result. It was a tactic that worked mostly as even when he ate those knees, he managed to take Gilbert down and it earned him the decision. Intriguing fun fight.

    Shungo Ohyama vs. Renzo Gracie

As the fight goes on, there is a lot more intent from the striking of both men. In the first round it all just looked like a bunch of posturing and grandstanding and it led to the fight not being the most interesting, but into the second round, both guys came forward and really decided to try and have a go at it. It was at this point that Shungo really started to dominate the fight, both on the ground with some belting ground and pound, and on the feet. Not a good fight it was to be said.

    Emelianenko Fedor vs. Semmy Schilt

Ah, time for some proper Fedor, and I'd say that proper Fedor just about covers it. Semmy suffers what can only be described as a total ground masterclass, as Fedor goes for anything you could think of on the ground. I thought he might have even had it with the Neck Crank as he had it in horribly. He also threw some horrible shots when he was mounted on Semmy. Just a total domination and obviously Fedor gets the decision.

    Don Frye vs. Yoshihiro Takayama

"That mouse has turned into a rat under his eye, and pretty soon it's going to turn into an elephant." Takayama is just a complete and utter machine. Can you imagine that thing coming towards you constantly while you punch it in the face? "What the fuck?!" Takayama's face at the end is just utterly disturbing. You can't help but love the heart of Takayama but in the end, there was only going to be one result here as Frye just unloaded holy hell on him. He played his own part in what was a truly magnificent fight while it lasted.

I actually enjoyed the Yvel/Horn fight a lot so that was a good point to the undercard, as was seeing Anderson Silva doing what he does best. Fuck people up. But the main event is the place to be here. Absolutely top notch.

  6. PRIDE FC 20: Armed and Ready

    Norihisa Yamamoto vs. Bob Sapp

I've never actually seen a Bob Sapp fight before. That was quite the beating that Yamamoto took there. What was Yamamoto supposed to do there? I just can't figure out how he was ever going to win that fight and Sapp just winds up punching him untill the referee steps in.

Masaaki Satake vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

German Suplex is how ye win an MMA match. This is the winning move of the future. As for the fight, it was actually quite good, even if it was a bit on the one sided side. Rampage landed a couple of big slams, including the one that won the fight eventually. Satake looked dangerous on the feet and Rampage wanted NONE of that, getting close and then taking him down and gave him quite the beating. The most vile thing being two HUGE knees from the side. Impressive.

Yusuke Imamura vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Is this Little Nog's PRIDE debut? Can't remember coming across him before watching these. In the time it takes me to type those two sentences out, Little Nog wins with the Guillotine Choke. Hmm. One of the easier paydays of his career probably.

    Dan Henderson vs. Ricardo Arona

The fight got worse as it went on but it wasn't enough that it was a bad fight. It remained very interesting from the first minute to the last. Arona really dominated more and more as the fight went on, and as we came to the end of the fight, we seen that Henderson was getting more and more desperate to do something, but Arona did a great job of managing to keep things going well. The first round was superb though and a brilliant two sided tactical battle between two obviously very gifted fighters.

Murilo "Ninja" Rua vs. Mario Sperry

Ladies and gents, this is utterly utterly brilliant. It just doesn't settle down. The number of crazy exchanges between the two on the feet is only the tip of the iceberg. When they get down to the ground, you have the dangerous striking of Ninja and the obvious submission talents of Sperry. As the fight went on, Ninja seemed to be getting better of the striking exchanges but early, Sperry had Ninja rocked a couple of times, and even got a knockdown from a brilliant right hand. Both men with close calls in submissions as well. It was just an excellent two sided fight and probably one of my favourites yet. I'd say it's between this and Nog/Herring.

    Alexander Otsuka vs. Sanae Kikuta

You know, I was going to say "If I didn't know any better, I'd say Otsuka was deliberately kneeing the balls?", but I'm not convinced he didn't know what he was doing, given the fact that he apparently doesn't like or respect Kikuta. I'd like to think Kikuta earned his respect with a good but unspectacular showing. Kikuta just seemed happy to ride the fight out, and when you consider how successfully he did this, it was a fair enough tactic. It made his Arm Bar at the end even better as it was just so out of nowhere. The mocking rubbing of the head from Otsuka was fun too. Not a great fight, but it was a fun watch, and credit to Otsuka for not giving up, and I don't know if he decided to raise his hands at the end because he never quit.

I don't mind the not hand shaking thing at the end there. Maybe the finger was a bit much, but if you don't respect someone, even after you've had your ass kicked then it means nothing to shake their hand. Giving the finger was a bit much though.

Wanderlei Silva vs. Mirko Cro Cop

Cro Cop somehow manages to match the intensity of Silva with that staredown. It was a very good showing from Wanderlei Silva I thought. If it had gone to a judge's decision, Wanderlei Silva probably would have won it. Calling that a draw just wasn't fair on Silva though. Cro Cop's main successes were from the body kicks and he left the body of Silva in some state. Pretty much the entire time though, Silva was the dominant guy on the feet, and in round two he managed to throw some big blows in the guard. Impressive.

I thought this was a brilliant show with some really intruiging stuff and one terrific fight in particular.

  7. But then what do you do with them? As 6 time former champs you can't really justify putting the belts back on them, unless it be in some sort of caretaker capacity.

I'd have them bemoan their lack of luck in title matches and attack the champions and force them into an uneasy alliance. Would make a brilliant TV fued while the singles titles get defended on PPV.

EDIT: I mean have them fued with the world and TV champs on TV btw.

  8. I thought it was worth mentioning that I went back and watched the Otsuka fight. The guy actually did fucking good! He didn't appear to lack skill in any department and shook Silva a few times. The moment when he switched position was terrific, he DROPPED Silva with a right, and had some goo scrambles. He put up a fight, unfortunately ended by injury.

  9. Gadge mentioned that Lo-Ki vs Richards at the 10th Anni would be a suitable event to mark the show. Indeed - but old Brandon is the Carlos Tevez of wrestling, and unless his spell up North has made him less averse to doing jobs, I can't see it happening. In a similar vein, it would be nice to see Joe back, but after the MGMC fiasco of 2010, I can't see that happening either.

I wouldn't mind if we seen that or not. We got an utter screamer from them in PWG and I'd be more than happy for it to be left at that to be honest. I can't see them topping it.

I'd have Samoa Joe come back and beat Kevin Steen, with the help of Corino. Corino and Joe being old mates, so the continuity would be there with the match making, Joe can go over and Steen can look decent.

El Generico's probably been the most consistent guy in the company since he debuted. He certainly deserved better than to drop the TV belt after just one match to the hapless Jay Lethal.

I'd say it's Roddy Strong. It's close though. Jay Lethal is a terrific wrestler though and WAY under-rated by yourself. He also carried Bennett to his best ever match. Kudos need to be given.

Looking at the upcoming cards, the departure of Claudio and presumably Hero has left a massive hole. Claudio deserved a proper send-off - another consequence of focusing on the TV show to the detriment of everything else. ROH desperately needs some new main event talent - I think everyone's fed up of seeing combos of Richards/ Strong/ Edwards.

Sadly, I can see Bennett making the step up. Corino is a magnificent character, if not a wrestler, so I'd like to see him step up. Jimmy Jacobs possibly? I can see Corino/Jacobs vs. Generico/Steen being the main fued of 2012 so possibly that'd see a couple of new main eventers formed. Kenny King has both the charisma and ability to make it too I reckon. Exciting times ahead.

Undoubtedly the disappointment of 2011 has been Haas and Benjamin. It's wouldn't be fair to say their tag title reign has bombed; but they haven't set the world on fire either. I'd like to see King and Titus - who finally got over as team in 2011 - to take the belts from them. Then King and Titus could work a program with a heel Young Bucks. While all this is going on, Cole and O'Reilly should work a program with the Briscoes in order to get them ready for a tag title reign in 2012.

Agree entirely. ANX have been fantastic. Cole and O'Reilly still have some major chinks in the armor. In saying that, they ARE over, and could easily be ready for a reign right now. The Briscoes shouldn't just be used as jobbers to the contenders again.

  10. The build up is great to that fight though, i think if you have the DVD a lot of the stuff is included in the extra's?

There's a bunch of stuff pre-show, but it's only a small bit on the press conferences. There's also a post-fight interview with Frye giving Shamrock some credit for the way he cranked it in. You could tell that he was in a lot of pain in the heel hook.

oh and Wanderlei at that point was going through his stage of just ruining Japanese challengers one after another. It was fun as hell, but the guys he were fighting were either a) outmatched or b) terrified. Wanderlei was given some favourable match-up's in Pride.

I think "outmatched" certainly describes the last two. Otsuka certainly wasn't terrified. Daft bastard just wanted to trade. To be fair to Otsuka though, he did give himself a good showing I thought, especially considering he was on a three fight losing streak.

  11. PRIDE 19: Bad Blood

    Tom Erikson vs. Tim Catalfo

Tim Catalfo has a pretty magnificent beard. Tom Erikson unfortunately defeats both him and his beard with the choke. As soon as he got the mount on Catalfo he was relentless. Catalfo didn't do TOO bad a job defending but Erikson looked very good.

    Wallid Ismail vs. Alex Steibling

I'm becoming a big fan of Alex Steibling watching these shows. Two fights in a row he has had much the same plan, and both fights go as he'd have wanted them to, for the most part. I think he could have done without Ismail having so much time on top in the last two rounds, but Steibling did all of the main effective work and was never in danger of losing the fight. Even when they spent most of the first round on the ground, both guys kept busy and that helped to make it more entertaining, and therefore make the whole fight well worth a watch. Great stuff.

    Pele vs. Carlos Newton

I'm fucking gutted that this fight had to finish. Absolutely terrific fight there. Newton took some absolutely horrific shots in that fight. The knee in particular is just incredible and Newton didn't even seem that phased by it afterwards as he just continued to do as he was doing. Pele looked absolutely raging after the fight. Absolutely brilliant.

    Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Heath Herring

The first round of this was absolutely brilliant, and I thought we were really in for yet another cracker on this show, but alas it wasn't to be and the fight died down quite a fair bit in the last two rounds. The first round was incredible though with both guys looking magnificent. Igor in particular was really surprising with the ease at which he was taking Herring down. Herring was very dominant in the last two rounds though. I'd say that the first round is certainly good enough to make this one to watch.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Enson Inoue

That was yet more brilliant stuff from Big Nog. Inoue wasn't without his good points and he put in some good shots and also defended the submissions, but starting from the toe hold attempt, Big Nog wound up finding himself in the "matter of time" stages, and then set up the Triangle Choke with an Arm Bar and got the win. Very good from Big Nog.

    Wanderlei Silva vs. Kiyoshi Tamura

JUST ANOTHA VICTIM!!! One punch knockout in the second round from Silva. Tamura didn't seem to be offering much in the first round, other than giving Silva a punching bag. In the second round he actually caught Silva on the feet a couple of times, and rocked him on one occaision. Silva clocked him with the right to the temple and the ref stepped in.

    Don Frye vs. Ken Shamrock

Umm... not sure what to make of this fight. There is an intensity there which makes the whole thing intriguing, but truth be told, it isn't a good fight for me. There is a great moment in the third round when Frye lands two big shots, and there's two almost identical moments with Shamrock going with the heel hook. There's stand up exchanges in flurries but most of the fight isn't very good.

I thought this was an amazing show to watch. Main event felt like a spectacle but turned out to be a disappointment.

  12. Right, back to the PRIDE 18 stuff.

Norihisha Yamamoto vs. Jan "The Giant" Nortje

Jan Nortje going for the Guillotine Choke seemed to be his downfall, because when Yamamoto managed to escape from that, Nortje just had nothing to offer in the way of defence on the ground, and Yamamoto just passed the guard, looked for the arm, got it and finished it, and did so with great ease. Yamamoto looked like he might be in for a long night early when Nortje took him down with the right hand, and if he had kept the fight standing, could have won this one.

    Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Valentijn Overeem

Stephen Quadros: "Overeem doesn't have to worry about a heel hook from Igor." How does that grab ye? Although when he said it, I was kind of agreeing with him. Then Igor gets the heel hook and you could see that Overeem was never far away from tapping out. Some good stuff on the ground from both men actually, with some good jostling for position. Enjoyable while it lasted.

    Akira Shoji vs. Jeremy Horn

Not the best of fights there. It should be noted that Jeremy Horn was actually very good here. He was constantly working hard from the bottom looking for all sorts of shit every single time he had Akira on top, and then looking great when he was in the same position. He also managed to look pretty excellent standing. Just a top notch showing from Horn really, even if the fight wasn't that exciting.

    Wanderlei Silva vs. Alexander Otsuka

I think that Otsuka has to be given credit here lasting against Wanderlei Silva. Especially coming off of a considerable losing streak. And at the end of the second round he actually managed to be impressive with some good work on the ground. It was an unfortunate ending to the fight, a second in a row for Wandy, but that's what happens when you smash people's faces in. Not amazing, but good to watch Otsuka really give it a go against the champion.

    Yoshihiro Takayama vs. Semmy Schilt

Some considerable size in this fight. Takayama has this weird watchability about him. He's sloppy as fuck and he just basically walks into the left hands and kicks from Semmy at the end. He also has a hilarious attempt at a takedown early in the fight, but he just comes in and tries to fuck the other guy up. Can't help liking that quality in an MMA fighter. Anyways, weirdly fun while it lasts.

  13. Sorry, but a full PRIDE 18 review is out of the question. I was writing out my review and the PC restarted. Got a LOT to watch from it, but a few things so far.

Allan Goes vs. Alex Steibling goes into my PRIDE must-sees. I'm compiling a list and I saved that bad boy into it before the thing farted on me. Terrific fight. Allan Goes was just so impressive and Steibling just showed amazing composure, and pretty much every minute, the commentators were saying "Steibling is gonna finish it in the third". Kudos to them for calling it and kudos to Steibling for sticking to the plan.

Ninja Rua looked terrific against Alex Andrade.

I really want to see a Matsui vs. Rampage fight. Does it ever happen?

  14. It was good to see the Taktarov fight in those .gifs actually. That ending was brutal.

    PRIDE FC 17: Championship Chaos

Yuji Ishikawa vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

Rampage don't get paid by the hour. Comes out rushing and unloading, they break and then the same thing happens again and he won the fight. Not really much more to be said about that, other than fun.

Dan Henderson vs. Murilo Ninja Rua

The first round is very much dominated by Ninja Rua on the ground. He actually did a good job of escaping from under Dan and then passed to the side mount, but he didn't seem to do much from there. Dan Henderson did try and escape but other than that he didn't do much either, so Ninja probably won the round. The second round was looking like more of the same, but Henderson exploded with a takedown and knees. I still think Ninja won the round though. Dan Henderson somehow gets the decision. I can see a case for him winning the second, and he definately won the third. It was a fight with flurries of action but it really took off.

    Semmy Schilt vs. Masaaki Satake

Ivan Drago returns to PRIDE to face Satake. I get the feeling that this isn't a fight that will last very long. Sure enough, Semmy Schilt really does a number of shots. As always Bas Rutten totally marks out for the body shots. Satake had all sorts of problem with the reach of Schilt. That actually reminds me of the Jones/Rampage fight with Satake getting nowhere near and never even LOOKING like reaching him.

    Renzo Gracie vs. Michiyoshi Ohara

Ohara looks like one intense guy. I was watching this with my brother and I used the sentence "Gracie would be better staying on his feet." which is a sentence I don't get to use that often. The first round was basically Renzo stalking Ohara around the ring and landing some combos and low kicks and Ohara offered practically nothing in response. The bizarre thing is that Ohara didn't want to go to the ground in the second. Yes, I know he's fighting a Gracie, but if he can't stand with him and clearly doesn't WANT to, what DOES he want? Seemingly, the answer is "to clinch" which doesn't amuse me much. All in all this isn't good at all from Ohara, and Gracie does what he needs to for the win.

    Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Mario Sperry

VERY impressive showing from Sperry here. He wastes no time taking Igor down and then when it looked like he might escape from the bottom, Sperry gets the Side Choke for the win. That was just very nice work.

    Tom Erikson vs. Matt Skelton

So this fight can end in a draw. Erikson unloads a HUGE takedown after Skelton makes a decent fist of blocking, but it was a superb turn and takedown which got him to the canvas and Erikson just made it look easy from there and he gets the choke. A good outing for Erikson.

Heath Herring vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - PRIDE Heavyweight Championship

The first round was phenomenal stuff. I had the sense watching it that Herring was lucky to escape several times. Big Nog was looking much better on the feet and then when they went down to the ground, Big Nog was ridiculously dangerous and Herring did an amazing job getting out of some really dangerous positions. Lets not forget the war on the feet about midway into the round as well. Herring seems to be in even bigger survival mode in the second round with Nog seconds away from finishing for much of it, and then at the end of it all, Herring escapes again and gets a full mount and ground and pound of his own. In the end, all of Nog's work pays off with the decision, but you have to credit Herring for helping to make this such a fantastic fight. Certainly one that is in the must-see category.

Wanderlei Silva vs. Kazushi Sakuraba - PRIDE Middleweight Championship

A good competitive first round between the two men. Sakuraba had Silva in a lot of bother and especially with a Guillotine Choke where Silva broke out a massive slam to get out of that. Horrible ending to the fight. That is a fucking woeful way for a title fight to end. Of course, there's no options to be had there, but it's still not good. What we did see from the two of them had me believing that we might be seeing a fight as good as the one that came before, but alas it wasn't to be.

The ending of the show didn't amuse, but that was a damn fun show.
