  1. Heads up for anyone that is near the area - Mike Carey (Hellblazer, Lucifer, X-Men Legacy, The Unwritten and the Felix Castor novels) is doing a free reading, Q&A and signing at the Big Green Bookshop in Wood Green tonight at 7pm. It's an intimate venue, and should be interesting stuff.

  2. Having just bought SFIV, I'll have to wait until Pay Day for my next purchase. However I'm strongly leaning towards picking up Watchmen. I'm a big 2000AD man, Rogue Trooper, ABC Warriors, Strontium Dog, Bad Company, Slaine and of course Dredd himself. Is this likely appeal to me given my tastes?

I may finally try some new tastes as well, having recently dipped into the Essential Punisher.

More than likely. Alan Moore spent a long time writing for 2000AD before he went to the US.

  3. I used to love comics and graphic novels when I was younger. Was a massive X-Men fan, but lost interest after the Onslaught Saga. Wouldn't mind re-reading that, actually...

You're in luck - it was collected recently. It'll set you back a bit, but it's just about every related issue.

Also, Age of Apocalypse was collected in it's entirety, which is awesome.

  4. I had tears, right up until the very last page. Maybe it's just the way i interpreted it wrongly but i'm extremely happy with that ending.

Now i've decided to try and order more Deadpool and Cable books. It may not be a series but i greatly enjoy the couple i have already and based it on that fact.

SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

    Tears...of laughter. Really funny ending.

  5. I forgot the Arkham Asylum. That really is one of the most fucked up books i've ever read. Brilliant stuff.

Well my friends, today i will purchase Transmetropolitan volume 10 and hence complete the story (other than reading volume 0). Another grand day for me. Then i'll have to find another series to read.

All I will say about the ending - expect tears.

  6. Just subscribed to The Observer, and in the back issue for 11th March 1991, there is this reference:

Paul Bearer is just incredible in his role with Undertaker. There's a difference between doing away with a character and personal humiliation and if you saw the Brother Love burial, you'd know the difference.

Can anybody shed any light as to what happened? Is he saying that was done well? I think he was, but if it's an oblique reference, I'm lost.
It's really two different statements. The Paul Bearer thing is separate. What Dave is going on about is how Brother Love was destroyed by the Ultimate Warrior during the Brother Love Show, having to suffer a huge beating and taking splash after splash. After that, Brother Love disappeared, and Paul Bearer replaced him as the Undertaker's manager. You can see it on the WWF's Funniest Moments videotape.
Yeah, I put the Bearer thing in to give the timing some context - I figured it was around the time of the changeover. So, was there any personal humiliation, etc, with the Brother Love thing? Was there something insider going on, or is he saying it's a straight 'doing away with character' thing?Oh, and cheers, btw.

  8. When exactly did Mankind start wearing a shirt to the ring, and how was it explained? I believe it was somewhere between Over The Edge '98 (where Foley wrestled as Dude Love) and King of the Ring '98 (Hell in the Cell).

It was to do with his on/off corporate relationship with Vince - Foley mentions it in his first book IIRC
Yep, it was after Over The Edge, when he dressed up 'professionally' for Vince McMahon. He'd dressed up outside of the ring before that (including having false teeth), but I *think* the explanation was that Vince blamed him for losing against Austin, and Mankind took this to be rejection. He started wearing the same clothes, and the explanation was that he was depressed/dishevelled, etc. This was all part of a slow face turn, as he became 'Mick Foley the underdog'.
Cheers. I wasn't watching Raw regularly then so missed that transition from Dude Love to "corporate" Mankind. As luck would have it, I picked up boxes of old stuff from my parents loft yesterday, and the first Foley book was in there. I might have a read through it.
Small point, but I possibly described it badly. The transition was more from 'corporate' Dude Love to a slightly amalgamated Mankind. By Survivor Series, which may have been the first full time, he started wrestling in a full suit, which got more destroyed as the PPV went on.

  10. And (even better!), since the 'll' sound in welsh is (IIRC) a 'y' sound, it means that the spelling of his name can be pronounced as 'dy-yan', or 'Diane'. He'll have fun with that one, too.

Surprised no one else has bothered to correct this, but the correct pronunciation of the double L is basically just an L with an exhalation over it so it sounds something like "th-le". Ergo, Dyllan could be pronounced "Dythlan".There's probably a better explanation online somewhere...
Fair enough - serves me right for taking my knowledge of the pronunciation from Terry Pratchett or somewhere similar.
  11. I honestly though that 'DYLLAN' was the proper spelling. By the time i found out it wasnt, i allready had my heart settled on that name, that spelling.I think that there are thousands of worse names out there in this day and age than a normal name with an extra 'L'

  12. Dylan with just the one L is still a lovely name

That's kinda subjective. When I was growing up, it was an insult, so I wouldn't be naming my sprogs that. As was "ben", come to think of it. And "trevor", a little later on."He's a right dillon.""No, the other one, you ben.""No, don't pick that trevor, or we'll lose."
    Stop being a Ronnie.
  13. Make sure you mention to your doctor's about the weight loss. Also mention if you had any major illnesses when you were younger. You've probably done this already, but it's something close to my heart. My sister lost her baby as a result of complications arising from the fact she had viral meningitis when she was younger. Unfortunately, there was no obvious reason for her problems, but she lost over a stone while she was pregnant.

  14. You raise a fair point, Nick, in that I'm keeping this going - however, I'll point out that I didn't drag the thread back up (and I didn't respond to Dingbat either) until the thread had already been bumped by Bix and Bootcleaner. Some of the reports (on here and on 1PW - forgive me for not going back and finding quotes) have suggested that some families walked out. You've also essentially said 'nobody was offended, other than those who were uncomfortable'.And yes, I probably do come across like I'm begging for an apology. Do you know why? It's because I'm a fan of wrestling, I'm a fan of British wrestling, and I'm a fan of Tighe and Simmons. I don't care about SoCo, because they're out of touch has-beens. I do care about how British Wrestling is perceived.I really want 1PW to not be part of this. I really want Tighe and Simmons to not be part of this. I want this to be two old farts who put everyone in an uncomfortable position, and have 1PW distance themselves from it. Instead, by not apologising, they're condoning it.I want this to not be them. I don't want to think that 1PW see this as an acceptable thing to happen at their show. But they're not giving ANY indication otherwise. I want them to do some damage control, because they see what happened as being damaging. I don't want them to do it so that I can crow about being right.

  15. They've apologised? Other than the guy that runs the 1PW fancast, Dingbat, who seems to have been watching a different match to any other reports, I'm unaware of a direct apology. And I'm not going to even touch what impact said (or let him suggest I was 'senoring' his thoughts), as I don't really need to. Let's face it, who has he convinced with his badly written, badly argued take? And besides, my g-string is chafing.

Sorry, but I don't recall reading your recap of the show and how offended you were when you saw Smothers say what he said?Ah, of course; you weren't there, as with quite a number of other people who have commented upon this issue. There's no problem with that, of course, but these 'other reports' you seem to be talking about all seem to be focused around one report.EDIT: By no means construe this as a claim that it didn't happen, but I take offence to you seemingly badmouthing my recollection of events; I was actually at the show to be offended.
That what didn't happen? And really, you taking offense to me badmouthing your recollection of events when you've done your level best to portray me as a 1PW HATER~! is amusing. There have been various confirmations of the fact that the term 'ass up, face down, pillow biting fags' was used, which you said you were sure you would have remembered. This was while you kept trying to divert attention from what happened - seriously, look back at your response when I pointed out that a 'yes' would have done. Look at the way you tried to claim that chopping off the end of the match would render the segment inoffensive. Look at the way you tried to portray me as a 1PW hater. Look at, now, the way you're diverting attention by raising the point that I wasn't in attendance, and trying to make out that other people that have said the same thing are all taking it from the same report. On top of this, you are the ONLY person I've seen on either this, or the 1PW board, that has said that Stevie Aaron apologised. If you're right in this, apologies, but you can see why I don't really trust your memory of the incident.Perhaps someone from 1PW can clarify matters?
  16. I'm not gay, but my boyfriend is.Someone's probably made that joke but I can't be arsed to wade through any more of this thread to find it.OT: this is one of those instances, as so often happens at wrestling shows, where someone steps over a line and it makes you cringe. 1PW apologised, and it seems to be made clear that they do this kind of thing fairly often, given the parental warnings. What more can you do? Well, besides hooking Jim Davidson up with SoCo.

  17. The promotion hasn't apologised though, from what I can see. If the promotion takes the steps I've outlined above, then they'll be a company I have no problems with. If they don't (or at least don't take similar steps), then they're a company which endorse and promote this kind of bullshit. Which means I have no desire to spend money on them.

Seems a bit childish in a industry that is positvely riddled with political incorrectness or are we just turning a blind eye to other stuff that has taken place in wrestling as a whole.

Which was the last show you were at that had this kind of thing going on? You know, if it's 'riddled'? I'm not talking 'policitcally correct', I'm talking 'not completely offensive'. I'd say this is going over the line, and the line isn't often gone over.
  18. I sure as hell don't remember 'ass down face up' at all. I think I'd have noticed something like that.

It was "ass up, face down, pillow biting faggot" - Believe me, Hamrick did say this.

But Hamrick was joining in the 'faggot' jokes? And Tighe and Simmons were playing up to them?

Tighe and Simmonz prompted the 'faggot' jokes with their dancing in the 'dance-off', apparently inspiring Tracey to make a comment. The dresswearing was what caused the 'faggots' chant afterwards.
Nah, the homophobic comments were made before the dance-off. Tighe and Simmonz just played up to it.
Thanks, Shimmer. Could you clarify Stevies apology, please?

A simple 'yes' would have done.

Whereas I think it couldn't be more obvious that this incident paints 1PW in a bad light all by itself.

Not really. I'd say it reflects badly on Tracey Smothers and Chris Hamrick more than anything; that is, for anyone who isn't continuously trying to trace it back to the promotion.
Right, we're finally beginning to get there. It reflects badly on Tracey AND Chris. Would you agree it reflects badly on Tighe and Simmons for playing up to it? And at which point do you turn around and say 'well, it was only four wrestlers for ten minutes. What's the problem from the company point of view?'And I'm loving how you're portraying me as 'continuously trying to trace it back to the promotion'. This isn't the CIA murdering Kennedy, or the American Government organising 9/11. It can be 'traced back to the promotion' by the fact that it took place at a 1PW event. Or is that stretching?I'll accept this was nothing to do with the promotion if the following turns out to be true.A - Smothers and Hamrick went into business for themselves. B - Simmons and Tighe didn't know it was going to happen, and played along with it because they didn't really have anything else they COULD have done.C - 1PW put out an apology distancing themselves from what happened totally.D - 1PW either send Smothers and Hamrick out for a public apology at their next show (and a REAL one, not a quick 'sorry for the bad language), or don't book them again.E - 1PW completely cut the segment from their DVD, so they don't try to profit from it. Shouldn't be too difficult - it was a six hour show. They'll need to cut stuff anyway. If all of those are true (and it's not totally unlikely. It'd be the professional thing to do, and it'd reflect well on Simmons and Tighe that they made an honest mistake), then 1PW are totally in the clear. If, on the other hand, they were pleased with the match, Simmons and Tighe were either pleased with the match, or were aware of what was going to happen in advance, then frankly, fuck them.
