You should give Bruce Prichard's XFL podcast a listen @Really Big Shoe, if you can be arsed. Prichard goes into detail about some of the lesser known details. According to Prichard, Vince's football knowledge isn't great, but of course, the key to fixing that is surrounding himself with people that do have a clue and listening. IIRC, a lot of the early issues came down to Vince not really understanding the rules and it leading to a more defence-friendly rule set, as well as a lack of proper coaching due to time constraints.

Thanks @ColinBollocks that podcast sounds interesting so I'll check it out. Will give the XFL 30 for 30 another watch too. I can't think of anyone come to mind who Vince could bring in with in depth footage knowledge as his right hand man. Maybe say Mike Dikta but his personality can be as brash as Vinces. Really it's like how he went about things in the early 80s and starting to build something new from there like he did with taking the WWF national. The NFL won't fall over like the territory system did though so he needs more so to be a complement to the NFL, more so a hybrid of the USFL and XFL 1.0 with more action packed football so to speak. Or find a niche to appeal to the jaded NFL fan.

With the public interest in CTE high etc he can't really offer smash mouth high intense football to the detriment of the players or down the line he'll have a mass class action lawsuit to handle like the NFL did. So really an NFL alternative with today's landscape doesn't make much logical sense unless he has some hidden formula to make you want to tune in. Unless there's something like an angle they work where the tackles are less intense etc but that doesn't seem very Vince like. I think with so much choice nowadays you really need a superb product to garner public interest. Vinces main audience will be predominantly wrestling fans and football fans whereas the NFL gets a ton of mainstream interest because it's part of the fabric of American culture. With a resurgence in NBA popularity and baseball I'm wondering whether they'd be better venture opportunities to consider with there being more possible action packed games.

I think/hope Vince realises he cheapened his league significantly by trying to make it "edgy", which along with the sub-par product turned people off. If he doesn't learn from his mistakes then he's got absolutely no chance.

You imagine that 30 fro 30 and seeing Bob Costas and co scoff at Vince has been eating away at Vince since he saw the documentary.

Hopefully so. He has to learn from his mistakes this time around. Bob Costas came across really badly in the 30 for 30 and seemed to have an axe to grind with Vince. I think he has to give adequate planning time to build the XFL this time around. Will he reactivate the old teams etc and the same concepts etc, which would save a lot of planning since the infrastructure so to speak is there. I think him bringing back the XFL as a big FU to Costas and co isn't the way to go.

Vinces primary business is pro wrestling and ideally that should be his #1 focus. I don't think he has a Football background it would be different if it were say someone like The Rock as he played for the Miami Hurricanes, in the CFL and does the Ballers show so he still seemingly has an interest. I don't know if Vince McMahon follows the NFL or is a football fan himself. He needs to have that passion for the game otherwise he'll fail again. Unless he gets a Football guy in to run operations and just be a figurehead. Now he's older I'm assuming he will just be the financier and get the right people involved. Being at the forefront and being PT Barnum of the XFL will be a mistake again.

  3. Seems very likely it's a XFL reboot http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/12/16/is-the-xfl-coming-back/

At the end of the 30 for 30 there's a bit of a tease about Dick Ebersol and Vince working together again. NFL ratings are down 9% and struggling this season so I don't know if it's going to mean there's a place for an alternative or whether a relaunched XFL would tank even further. As its independent of WWE, couldn't Vince make it more edgy and TV-14 instead. But with the USFL and XFL there's two failed NFL competitors. I don't know how XFL 2.0 will fair any better than before but if Vince wants to go for it and NBC or whomever are on board then he should go for it. A Raiders type team in Oakland to step in when they move to Vegas would be a smart move as he could tap into that fan base.

  4. Yep definitely Bash 85. The card included Outlaw Ron Bass, Superstar in his Kung Fu gimmick, Road Warriors, Andersons, Dusty v Tully, Flair vs Nikita. Interesting fact that's most likely known but in one of the early Observers it references complaints that a $60 tape only lasted an hour with clipped matches.

Ric enters the ring via red carpet and comes out of a Helicopter. It's in an open air stadium and he faces Nikita Koloff for the NWA world title. The Nikita training video and build up is classic old school pro wrestling IMO.

There was another highlights tape hosted by Bill Apter, I forgot its name. Don't think it was the Bash 86 and had The Fantastics on the cover. Both that and The GAB tape was reissued as part of the WCW tapes released in the 90s by first Independent.

  5. Don't take it to heart If he leaves Bellator there's No Lookin' Back. The UFCs doors are Wide Open for him to come back. In the Blink of an Eye he'll be on a Fight Night. A few big wins, If that's what it takes, he'll be In the Spirit. Just has to wait Minute by Minute and don't make it a blue obsession for himself. His UFC comeback could be in Motown. Whatever we imagine there's every changing times in the MMA world.

  6. I quite like Eli too. He's very much a knockoff of The Rock but at least it seems he's trying and into what he's doing. I disagree he lacks charisma too. He's not overly charismatic but in fairness Drake actually cuts a good promo IMO and he's someone if he had a "Austin" to match up against that could make for some fun TV. EC3 I find way more charismatic than ADR. He's someone who I think would be an ideal addition to SmackDown. They could do a fun bit with D-Bry like a "don't I know you" type of deal.

  7. Having the Broken gimmick in WWEs hand is a guaranteed recipe for failure unfortunately. It worked in Impact because they gave Matt the ball and he ran with it. They also let him develop it and with WWE there's a table full of writers and the Final Deletion stuff however entertaining doesn't fit in within their vision. They tried to emulate it with the Wyatts vs New Day and it came across as hokey.

Bray vs Matt is something they should incorporate as part of WrestleMania like with Hot Rod and Goldust at Mania XII. Do some pre tapes and have them conclude the match at WrestleMania similar to the Hollywood Backyard Brawl. That's the only way I see it working or on a Halloween themed Raw where what they are doing would be really suited. In a weekly format I can't see it working and in Impact it was the main part of the show. In WWE it's almost an after thought. So it's best to build it via YouTube and social media. Soon as it hits TV it's very sink and swim, more than likely sink in this instance unless they let Matt and Bray be in full control.

The football stickers comparison is interesting, but we didn't have to pay fifty notes for the empty album. In fact, they were/are often given away free with newspapers and footy magazines.

One of the biggest bones of contention with gaming microtransactions is having them in games that already come with a premium price tag. For free-to-play games I don't think there's an issue.

Very good point. A few you can play through without having to use micro transactions but some they are a necessity to get anywhere. On Fifa I think you can play through certain modes to gain enough coins to buy "packs" but usually it's tiered. So at best you'd get a silver player.

For gold ones they'd be ones you'd have to pay for. Something like FIFA too has a lot of different star players to collect so if someone was so inclined they could waste hundreds buying packs to assemble an Ultimate team. Back in the day you just had to unlock them and I think that's much better since you get a modicum of achievement for doing so. Like unlocking Andre on the No Mercy Royal Rumble Survival mode or getting all the items in the SmackDown Mall. Those would be micro transactions now (moves, items etc) and Andre would be DLC. But if people still want to keep paying for micro transactions that's not going to stop. In some mobile games I think they have to be authorised now so that's something, I guess.

  9. Seeing Junie on your list reminds me to check out the new collection that was released a few months back. Queens Keep Yourself Alive doesn't get the props it deserves. There's an alternative mix on the 2 disc deluxe version. Think there's a demo version of it too on there. Ray Parker Jr is also underrated IMO. Much more to him then just Ghostbusters. Think he has worked with Stevie. Jack and Jill has a similar synth sound to something you'd hear on the Music from my Mind album. Raydios albums are also solid across the board. Cool electic mix of songs and artists.

  10. There's a fun but short Table for 3 with Sting, Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat. Shame this didn't go longer as Naitch was on top form here.

There's also in the Bret v Shawn collection a rare tag match between the Rockers and Hart Foundation. It has a Main Event banner in the rafters and no commentary so it must have been a dark match. I'll spoiler this in case

This is the match with the almost title change. IIRC this was referenced on WWE programming at the time. I also think this was part of the catalyst of Shawn breaking away because they couldn't win the tag belts. I think the Rockers were better in a "chase" role but to my knowledge this was a rare title match for Shawn and Marty.
