  1. It's taken from a bit at the live show (not aired on PPV or the VHS release) where they introduce various dignitaries. It included Hayes, Larry Hennig and Pat "I'm back now, I've definitely been away the whole time" Patterson among others. Most people had no clue who they were.

Hayes is a decent choice for that - he definitely has some UK recognition, as my parents remembered him as "Judo" Al Hayes.
  2. What would be more scary - important politicians, generals and business leaders sitting down to discuss important world affairs.... or important politicians, generals and business leaders not sitting down to discuss important world affairs? The UN is such a whorehouse of self-interest and politicking, it's actually reassuring to think that there are actually forums for people to discuss shit in private and maybe find some common ground. As you can see in places like Syria or Palestine, the worst thing is people not talking.

I guess it depends what you believe they're all meeting up to discuss. Personally (and I may just be getting cynical with old age) I tend to believe that they're a collection of wealthy and powerful people who's only interest is ensuring that they stay that way. Perhaps they'll be discussing which middle-eastern country needs liberated next? Or which attendee should benefit from said liberation? I think it was Cheney who profited from Iraq last time, so it'll no doubt be some else's turn.
They all profited, and it's all their turn, all of the time.
  3. I went and got a haircut today and actually got a cut based off one of the pictures in the books. It's an actual style. Pics will follows. Dicks at the ready, obv.

What kind of dodgy-arse hairdressers are open before 5:30am?!
    Forget it, Punkstep... It's Tottenham
  4. 4s are wankers.

4 is Stacey Lane "Bryant" Matthews. Guess this means that I watch too much RuPaul's Drag Race.I think I know a few people that represent at least 10 of these, all at once. I have several people who I would have counted as good friends, even if it's only online, before I started using my facebook more, but after their constant cryptic cries for help (often with song lyrics), I'm kind of done with them. I have one friend that does it constantly, and also assumes that everyone else is doing/wants to do it too, so I troll him regularly with song lyrics that he then takes to have some deep meaning.
  5. The trauma 'er indoors seems to have, rocking backwards and forwards and mumbling "it didn't happen" more than makes up for it. Maybe shouldn't have worn my Lannister shirt today...

Ha, I've had that too. "They're going to wake up and find it was all a dream, aren't they? Aren't they?"
Exactly - "They're not going to kill Robb, anyway... Oh SHIT!... but Catelyn is okay, they'll just keep her host... NO! FUCK!"
  6. I'm trying to be considerate, and not read ahead, as my wife is waiting until the series is completely over to read the books. My dad, on the other hand, was proper annoying when we went over there - I honestly don't think he understands the concept of a spoiler, and kept dropping all sorts of hints about stuff that we don't know yet from the show. He gave away completely the identity of Theon's tormentor, but I managed to take the bullet and then cover it with conversation.

  7. SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

Absolutely blew my mind - I genuinely didn't see that coming, although it was obvious that something fucked up was going to happen. For some reason, I'd gotten it into my head that the red wedding was going to be Joffrey's nuptials, so this caught me totally off guard. One thing I had faith in is that Martin will kill off basically any character, so I was able to feel a bit smug as I was told "well, Robb and Catelyn won't die," and then, "well, Catelyn won't die".

  8. Music request!

Does anyone have any recommendations for me for 60s/70s psych rock from the USA or Britain/Europe?

I like Jimi, obviously, and the Doors too. The Simpsons turned me on to Quicksilver Messenger Service but beyond that I know very little of the Western proponents of the genre and am much more familiar with their African counterparts.

(oh yeah, I like Beefheart and Starks Reality, not sure if those qualify)

edit: much to my shame I've never really bothered listening to the Beatles, so if you want to recommend any of their more psychedelic stuff in here too please do.

I can highly recommend this as a great starting point for 60s psych.

I heartily endorse this - Lenny Kaye is a genius. I'm especially a fan of The Shadows of Knight.

  9. Check out "Oar" by Skip Spence.

EDIT - Sorry for the short post, our office internet has been shit all week so far, and my phone internet is shit always. Skip Spence was a legit mental, broken by LSD and other circumstances, but "Oar" is a masterpiece.

    Oar - Skip Spence

Also, here's a bonus from the "More Oar" tribute album - probably Spence's last work, recorded as part of a music therapy program.

  10. Apologies if this has been posted before - if it has, then this post wasn't done by me, but by my home-bake doppelganger. If it hasn't been, then who knows?

I was a little perturbed to open the page and find that I'd already looked at two of the links - shadow people, because I was reading John Dies at the End, and bubbly creek because I was reading background on Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Interesting list, but some of them are a bit... shit. A Jonathan Creek episode?

  11. Jesus, I couldn't stand that as my alarm. I had Sir Duke as my alarm for a while but realised I was falling out of love with it. When you hear the song again, you associate it with waking up which is horrible. I wanted to have the theme to the first level on Mario 64 as my alarm, but I don't want to ruin that.

Songs that are too enthusiastic don't work as alarms. Morning Glory worked well for me about fifteen years ago. Eases you in, not annoyingly up-beat and a decent song.

I need something upbeat, or I'll just ignore it - I've no problem with hearing a song as an alarm over and over, but

is knackered as a ringtone through association with my mother-in-law and her hellish phonecalls.
  12. I've been listening to a good amount of Chris and Cosey recently - there's a real exuberance to their most accessible work, that I can only assume stems with no longer having to be anywhere near Genesis P. Orridge.

    Walking through Heaven

Everyone does better when they get away from Gen, i can't say i'm much of a fan of his work compared to the other members of TG.

I've always thought that he mainly contributed being a sick bastard to TG - the lyrics go from sublime (Very Friendly) to pointlessly nasty (Slug Bait), whilst the music is consistently top-notch. He appears to have deliberately sabotaged TG's reunion, so he's got that going for him.
