Last night also made Damian Priest look like an idiot and the momentum is gone with him.

The world champion you've been trying to take the title from at every opportunity for the last 2 months, hobbles to the ring, looking like a fluorescent hipster tellytubby (and yes I have to admit I both loved the suit and hate that I want it) to tell people he's injured and vulnerable and currently unable to compete and instead of legging it down to the ring or even just finding him backstage, giving him a hiding and dragging him back, he's hanging out in his club house with "two guys, a girl and dont Google me".

It's like they've either panicked writing wise or just not even bothered, you could try to play the line of him expecting Drew to turn up again, but at this stage it just feels like they've given him the briefcase off the back of Puerto Rico and the Bad Bunny match and hype but never had any plans to pull the trigger.

I wonder if they have too many possible challengers for the WHC at the moment with Punk, Cody, Gunther, Drew etc and Priest is just in a holding pattern until after Mania now. They could definitely reheat him, but at the moment it's hard to see where he fits in with plans and as he technically has the briefcase to use until July, I wonder if he may just be circling the runway for a few more months.

Any finisher named after a Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies EP (or any obscure post-rock records from the early 00s) is fine by me. Right in my wheelhouse.

If you’ll indulge me straying from ZSJ, I was always partial to Champagne SuperKneebar.

It always amazes me ZSJ can remember all these complicated names for his moves, yet still seemingly can't remember his Twitter password...for some reason.

    100% the best instant coffee.

The Lidl knock-off of Azera tastes very similar at a fraction of the price I've found, which has been a big help when I don't have time to make a "proper" coffee.

That's a fair critique. I really enjoy his matches; but I imagine there's a chance I'd have felt different about him if he'd emerged in AEW and not in WWE. His wrestling style would certainly feel less unique there, and he doesn't really have the promo skills to set him apart in that area. I'd love to see him succeed, but I think the criticism of him on this forum is totally reasonable.

    Not the way.

    Cool Runnings

God, what a film. I truly think this is one of my favourite films, and makes me blub like a baby at the end every time.

It's so much more than "funny film we all liked as kids" and has such a wonderful heart, and that heart is sportsmanship and John Candy.

When Irv says: "Derice, a gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without one, you'll never be enough with one" My word. The thing that made him so good is not only his ability to make you laugh, but also his ability to make you feel. Wonderful talent, sadly missed.

    Wicked soundtrack as well. 9/10.

Bullshit rating. Cool Runnings is a 10/10, and I will not hear otherwise.

Yup that's my point. People saying 'Oh but theres more possibilities in WWE' are really missing that those probably wont happen. He'll be on NXT, mainly so Triple H can try and get one up on AEW (he's petty, I admire it) AJ Styles is the only 'outside guy' who's ever come in with fanfare. WWE will look to establish him and get an audience knowing who he is. That's not a bad idea as Okada coming out and confronting Lesnar say would pop the hardcore, but most WWE fans wont be watching NJPW. In AEW he gets the full star treatment.

Well that's not happening. This isn't 2016 where NXT was essentially a super indie like when Nakamura came in, or even the NXT that battled it out with AEW, looking at the NXT of 2024 and there's no chance whatsoever they sign him to put Okada him there if he signs, especially not after supposedly rehabbing Nakamura in an effort to show they actually can book a Japanese talent in a positive fashion.

I'm not a big follower but Yota Tsuji looks the business and Umino, Uemura and O-Khan seem like they could be something.

Am I wrong in that assessment?

100% agree. Tsuji has that easy charisma about him, if NJPW handle him correctly he could be a massive star for the company. The others, who knows, but Tsuji definitely feels like the biggest prospect they have whenever I've seen him.

My first trip to the cinema was to see Snow White during a re-release in the 80's. Google suggests 1987 which means I was about 4. It was the first film I rememeber watching. The venue was the Granada Walthamstow. It wasn't the nearest cinema to where I lived (Ilford had Odeon's in Barking and Gants Hill), but it was where my grandparents lived so must have gone to see them after.

    image.png.604c5ef4082827471ce65329fec3fe5f.png

I remember being wowed by the venue. Not that I had any idea what a cinema looked like, but it felt both grand and old at the same time, very fancy looking. I enjoyed the film, even if I was scared by the old hag transformation. But I remember when I went to other more modern cinemas in future visits how they seemed more normal and less extravigant. I remember going there a few more times to see Jumanji and Babe, and the cinema closed down for good in 2003. It is scheduled to re-open as a Soho Thetre venue in the next few years. It also has some claims to fame. It was Alfred Hitchcocks go to as he lived in near by Leytonstone. It also had a concert by the Beatles in 1963 when it was used as a music venue as well.

    The Foyer in later years

Lots of articles about it as well like this one https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/9397

I can't speak for what it will be like once the council/Soho reopen it, but I spent many hours there when it opened as Mirth, Marvel and Maud in 2015, as I lived in the area at the time. Never felt like they made the most of it as a performing arts space (not sure if they had restored everything or just the foyer/bar), but it certainly had a beautiful interior with the restoration so I can absolutely imagine it was a grand beauty of a cinema back in the day.

I read the first few posts of this thread with utter envy, because all of my regular moviegoing haunts in Somerset and North Wales have either been more typical chain cinemas than your example or indies which were nothing special architecturally inside or out, then for some reason this jogged my memory and I realised I've actually watched two films in a 14th-century building:

    spacer.png

The Barn Cinema in Dartington, Devon is where my grandparents took me to see The Straight Story, then a few years later after Nana Foggy passed I went back with just my grandad to catch Kingdom of Heaven. It's a delightfully cosy, intimate venue that as the name suggests, is located inside a converted former barn.

The above appears to be a more recent pic after the seating areas underwent a bit of a revamp. Looks like they've managed to squeeze a few more places in than before since tickets are understandably often in high demand among the locals.

That is a gorgeous little cinema. Old, grand buildings are great, but cinemas in less conventional buildings are just as special too. There's just something about seeing a film outside the identikit confines of the multiplex that makes it such a tremendously enjoyable experience.

  11. Not sure if this is one of those "you had to be there" stories, but I'll share anyway.

I went to my Granny's funeral about 25 years or so ago in rural Ireland. As is customary, and to my mind super weird, we had to go and stand around her body in the coffin in the "Chapel of Rest" for a bit the night before while well wishers came around and gave their condolences, in advance of doing exactly the same at the funeral the next day. Bloody Catholicism.

Anyway, it was in the middle of a massive storm, and as you would expect during that time period in a very rural setting this would often mean power cuts sue to damage to the lines or fallen trees. As we all stood around this chapel of rest people would come around and wish us well, apologise for our loss, but the lights kept cutting out. My sister kept speculating that that it was Granny from beyond the grave, as the power kept coming back on after a few minutes. However the loss of light would bring proceedings to a halt each time, meaning what should have been a quick process, took about an hour. Standing in a room with the body of our dead grandmother.

As we neared the end of this whole ceremony it was revealed that in fact there had been no power cuts. Our Uncle had been idly leaning back and forth on the light switch on the wall, plunging everyone into darkness and then out of it every time he got a bit fidgety. The reactions he received when  the room realised this, ranged from looks that could kill, to me and my sisters trying not to burst out laughing in this tiny shack in the middle of nowhere, during a massive storm, as he managed to keep doing it until he was "politely" asked to move away from the light switch so we could finish up.

Sadly that's true of The Peter Cushing in Whitstable - although at least the building is being used for *something*.

Popped to Whitstable on a day trip and needed the loo, a Wetherspoons is always a safe bet. The toilets were upstairs and it's then I twigged they'd been sited in the old projector booths. The bar is where the screen was, and there's an enormous frieze of cinema goers looking at the back of your neck while you order a drink.

    6102_dining04.jpg

I loathe that it's a Wetherspoons, but 100% agree I'm glad it's used for something. It's such a beautiful building with so much history. On a side note Whitstable is lovely, I used to spend a bit of time there as a kid (my Mum's aunt had a caravan a mile or so away when I was young that technically slept 4, but frequently had about 15 various relatives crammed in for holidays) and I always loved the Peter Cushing exhibit at the Whitstable museum.

This reminds me, for years the old Coronet cinema in Holloway Road near where I grew up has been a Spoons for years, but they recently gave it up and it's now going to apparently reopen under new ownership. It's an absolute beauty of a building, so I hope it gets preserved as such. Obviously I'd prefer it was a cinema, but at least it's being kept as something.

I would love to see a scenario where Diana & Ross get to the final with one of them being a traitor and the other a faithful and then both screwing over everyone else (depending on how many are left at the end).

It would in a way mean they are almost guaranteed the prize money.

Something along the lines of Diane, Ross & Paul in the final, Ross & Paul as traitors and then Diana taking the prize money with Ross turning on Paul and then whoever wins splits the money anyway.

I was half asleep reading this and thought the lead singer of the Supremes had been wheeled out in some sot of ratings grab.

Sounds something along the lines of a penguin straw Mimsy. Cut one corner off the top of a Penguin biscuit wrapper and one of the diagonally opposite corner at the bottom. Use the Penguin as a straw to suck the coffee through to drink it and then unwrap and eat the remaining biscuits when it's nicely soaked in coffee. A real treat, if a messy one.

Will have to give that a whirl, sounds phenomenal.

I wouldn’t, but I do like to put Kit-Kats in the freezer so what do I know.

Regular kit-kats though, right? Not a chunky, because that feels like the work of of a madman.

I have no idea if this is demented (I worry it is), but on the mini egg front, I sometimes like to pop one in my coffee while it's really hot. Then you have a nice chocolatey, melty surprise at the end.

  16. I had a weird dream last night (we watched the most recent episodes of S2) that featured Claudia revealing that someone had been an undercover Traitor the whole time, unknown to the nominated Traitors, secretly pulling other strings in the background and this was then revealed to The Traitors AND the audience. Not suggesting this is a good plan, in fact it's probably a Russo-riffic swerve of an idea, but as it existed randomly in a dream it felt worth sharing.

Lovely example of an atmospheric type, without it going too gimmicky. Clearly not originally built for Odeon, looks more like a Granada or Paramount style. #nerd.

I love those old classic cinema interiors. At the risk of derailing the thread (Bacon might be right, this might be worth splitting out to a separate thread) I always loved going to the Odeon in Muswell Hill as a kid. This is before Muswell Hill became the playground for the uber-rich, when it was just somewhere that had one of three cinemas we could reach by bus (Holloway being another that was absolutely stunning as a building). It's an Everyman now and they've tarted it up, sadly, but the old interiors were beautiful.

I would say Chris Adams would be a good shout. Especially with the current buzz around WCCW with the film out. He certainly lived a fucked-up life (especially in the tail end of it) and of course has the links to Austin.

Anyone in the UK who could be featured?

Wasn't he one of the subjects on that Tales From The Territories sister show they did? I'd assume they won't re-tread much covered on there for DSOTR.

  20. I think it's Sammy Guevera's face. Hear me out*.

He has a smug thing that works for him, and obviously has the in-ring thing down too, but something about him doesn't click in terms of possibly ascending to main event status (RIP NGP). He seemingly has all the tools but there is a missing piece of the puzzle.

I felt the same way about Jay White in New Japan at some stage. Then he grew a beard and things started to click. I don't know if Sammy can grow a beard, but maybe he should.

He could go full beard Sammy:

    Or Mirror Universe Sammy:

Or Maybe he goes full Riker (although he's a pair of sunglasses for a Mini Dijak there I appreciate):

Anyway, get that man off TV til he grows a beard.

*This may not be a wholly serious point. And yes, I'm bored at work.

Topics that would be good but they may not touch: The whole 'Rockers roofying people' stuff. Jerry Lawler. The Death of ECW concentrating on how much Heyman fucked people over. Ashley Massaro (and the concussions lawsuit).

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that's a tricky one legally to delve into, given certain people who were around at the time have denied it happened (some more conveniently than others) and the one person who could potentially verify it did, is no longer alive. The risk of potential lawsuits from both the US military AND WWE probably make it no-go for DSOTR, especially with a lack of willing witnesses to corroborate.

  22. Couldn't decide whether this should go in Dull Men's Club, or in here, so apologies if the wrong thread. Odeon was my local cinema in London growing up, so this brought back some excellent childhood memories. Might be of interest to a few others.
