  1. I already did a few pages back, the tones a little sterner than I would normally take with LoKi, who seems a pretty reasonable chap for the most part, but the answers and the link is in there.

First google search shows this http://www.lawsonfairbank.co.uk/building-on-green-belt.asp it was not only happening on a pretty significant scale between 1994 to 1996 (an average of 3,287 houses per year) it jumped massively after that, going up to 5,265, an increase of 60%.

Honestly if you don't have even a passing understanding of the issues involved and under discussion why would you venture an opinion? Do you not find it a little embarassing to quote ill informed rubbish as fact in a debate you have no understanding of?

You may not know this about me, but I post very little, in fact nothing, on nuclear physics forums, because I would add nothing of any worth. You may want to apply the same approach to this thread.

  2. It was a scrapyard BEFORE the land was zoned as green belt; it wouldn't be available for any development by any section of the community now.

And I'm sorry but that is just utter bollocks, well over 5,000 new houses are built on green belt land every year, special exceptions are also made for leisure and retail enterprises all over the country all the time.

I'm sorry but on this one you really are going to need a little more understanding of the issues involved old boy.

  3. Lol if it was designated green belt after the scrapyard was gone, then it was designated green belt while the travellers were living on it. That means they bought the land, tried to get planning permission, and the council then designated it green belt.

Come on Loki, the council doesn't want an extension to the traveller site, there's no doubt about that. If it was ok with having it, it would let it happen, instead of designating the land green belt while they were on it and spending a decade fighting with them to stop them settling there.

  4. So, no proof then. Just your unsubstantiated opinion.

What? The council decided not to grant planning permission, they were happy to have a scrapyard on green belt, but not more travellers, can you give me any other possibility as to why they might have spent the last 10 years denying them planning permission and fighting a legal battle to get them off?

Come on LoKi, you're not this thick.

  5. basildon council aren't not giving them planning permission because it's green belt land, they're not giving them planning permission because they're travellers

I'm sorry, but do you actually have any proof of that? You've made that contention a number of times, so I presume you have something to back it up with. Otherwise it's just an accusation, not a fact.

Well basildon council, like pretty much all councils, have happily let greenbelt land be built on. It was a fucking scrapyard before the travellers bought it. And while they let it be a scrapyard, they wouldn't grant the travellers planning permission to build on it.

I'm kinda confused as to why you'd think it's in question, basildon council don't want the the site getting any bigger, so they're not going to give planning permission, that's the facts of the situation. Whether or not they're right to do so is where the debate can occur, but the underlying fact that baslidon council doesn't want to give the travellers planning permission is somewhat clear, given they've spent the last 10 years not giving the travellers planning permission.

  6. The fragrantly breaking the law thing has to be put into context though, basildon council aren't not giving them planning permission because it's green belt land, they're not giving them planning permission because they're travellers and there's no votes in letting travellers set up camp.

It's all very well saying the law should apply to everyone, but it only works if everyone's treated the same. This lot clearly aren't.

The bigger question to me isn't whether or not what they're doing is lawful, basildon council makes the laws in this matter, it's whether or not the laws made by basildon council are fair.

  7. Fear of the dark? No prayer for the dying? Those were cack albums? That's a bit strong, maybe not on the level of seventh son but they still had some cracking tunes on em.

And matter of life and death I'd say is one of their best ever (though that's post blaze, obviously)

  8. Opeth are another good call, consistently excellent. Slayer's a bit of a cliche but I don't think they've ever made a bad album, and as long as they hate dave behind the drum kit they've never been short of immense.

Pantera were pretty shit hot right through their career, Down are always good, napalm death have been putting out quality for decades. Ach there's loads o splendid stuff, metal's splendid.

  9. Anyone heading up/down for this?

    http://www.damnationfestival.co.uk/category/news

Big ol line up this year.

I played sevens with the Damnation crew, until very, very recently! Top blokes and probably the best festival going on in the UK at the moment. It's especially great if you're Scottish because the people who run it are Scottish and all their pals turn up pissed and cause absolute havoc. Leeds really does turn into a Scottish colony first weekend in November. Godflesh, Ulver and Doom will be absolute class though. Can't wait to see them.

Glad to see the word getting about. It shocks me that there's still people who haven't heard about it though. They deserve a good turnout, certainly.

Do you post on their forums?

  10. I wasn't referring to the traveller thing, I was referring to his attitude in general, especially as regards people Bobbins doesn't consider left wing enough. It fucking stinks. But I'm not a fan of discussing politics or religion, so I'm going to step out now.

Come on now, not chatting about it is surely letting the side down more than talking about it in the wrong way?

I'll go along with your point on calling people illeberal, I think it's somewhat poor, as being liberal in and of itself is not a badge of getting it right, I take a liberal viewpoint on most issues but that's an informed view after understanding the issue, to automatically be liberal or illeberal for that matter is intellectual lazyness of the highest order.

But, if you have an understanding of the issues and find other peoples opinions, it's very hard to not be a bit dismissive of them. I haven't seen much from bobbins where he's utterly wriiting people off for not being left wing enough. And I've been in the political thread quite a bit now.

  11. Yeah but he's not talking about socialism, he's talking about the way people discriminate against travellers who wouldn't discriminate against anyone else. And it's a fair point really.

Bringing it up doesn't mean he's trying to wear a badge or any shite like that, he's just offended that people would discriminate against anyone, and using the nigger line to try and highlight how offensive it is.

However, one thing I would agree on, calling people illiberal as though that in and of itself is problematic on it's own, well that is a bit silly. Other than that though, I really don't see too much example of what you're talking about in ol bobbins.

  12. With all due respect old boy, your left wing credentials, from an outsiders point of view, leave more than a little to be desired.

My left-wing, Socialist credentials are a damn site more authentic than most of the manky fucks I see on UAF rallies. First of all, I've actually worked and contributed to society via taxes and service.

Also, I don't stoat around in faded denims championing the working class whilst getting a weekly allowance from my upper class parents who most likely vote Tory when it comes time to slap down the X every four years or so.

Yeah see now that's not really telling me your politics, just who you aren't. As long as you spend more time attacking the uaf than the edl, and as long as you're creating threads attacking people for attacking the bnp, and as someone whose voted bnp.

Bottom line old boy, your opinion doesn't mean alot to me. And the fact you do manage to pay tax's through your work, like most of the rest of the country, doesn't really change that.

  13. It's the politics thread, I don't just post anti-EDL stuff in here, I post anti-BNP stuff as well. I'm not just doing it as a whole lets argue with mickey thing, more in a, let's all enjoy bad stuff happening to fascists thing.

I consider myself a left leaning Socialist and even i'm finding your stuff cringeworthy. Give it a break, you're simply making a bit of an arse of yourself.

Didn't you start this thread to have a dig about how pointless it is that the equality council went after the BNP? Didn't you vote for the BNP?

With all due respect old boy, your left wing credentials, from an outsiders point of view, leave more than a little to be desired.

  14. It's the politics thread, I don't just post anti-EDL stuff in here, I post anti-BNP stuff as well. I'm not just doing it as a whole lets argue with mickey thing, more in a, let's all enjoy bad stuff happening to fascists thing.

And no, the fact that mickey's here is unlikely to stop me doing that.

I even stayed out of it when people were calling him a thick racist cunt in here the other day.

So I'll try very hard to avoid arguing with him directly, but not posting fun stuff like the stuff above, to ensure I don't hurt the feeling of an EDL member, is rather unlikely to happen.
