I'm delighted Spuds so high up. is it too much to ask he breaks the top3?!

Yes, it would seem. :p ***********************************************************No. 4 - Spud2006 Ranking: 42005 Ranking: 9Holding Rankspud.jpgPhoto - www.saswrestling.comEEEEEEEYYYYAAAAPPPPing his way past the competition and into the top 5, Spud secures the exact same 4th place finish that he did last year.A year ago, Spud was one of a small few British wrestlers who had been pushed in the 1PW of that time. Locked in a battle with Sterling James Keenan and Abyss (that had been brewing since the very first 1PW show in October 2005), the West Country dynamo was battling courageously, but failing to win over the support of fans more interested in the imported talent. Interference, screw-jobs and beatdowns eventually led to an Iron City Streetfight between Spud and SJK at 1PW's only ever show in Barnsley in July 2006. Spud came out the losing end of a gripping contest, but his battles with the ever-increasingly-popular Keenan weren't over. Bizarrely, the two teamed together at "Devils Due" in Hull later that month to challenge JoJo for the 1PW World Tag Team Titles, only for Sterling to turn on Spud mid-match and drive the feud on.When Ring of Honor arrived in the UK in August 2006, Spud was heavily involved. On the ROH show in Liverpool, he opened up the tour in a poor 4-way with Colt Cabana, Matt Sydal and Jonny Storm, then moving on to face Storm and Jody Fleisch in an exciting 3-way the following night in Hoddesdon. Then, the following weekend, the SJK feud continued as Spud teamed with Teddy Hart to face Keenan and Brother Runt at 1PW "Invincible". The match went to pot when half the world ran in, leading to a 5 vs. 5 elimination tag match as Spud and Hart teamed with Old School X (Steve Corino, Tracey Smothers and Chris Hamrick) to take on Keenan and Runt, and Keenan's associates Abyss, Jack Storm and Dave Moralez. Spud provided the highlight of the entire night as he leapt from the balcony of the Doncaster Dome onto the heel squadron below.Down in IPW:UK, Spud and his Dragonhearts tag partner Luke "Dragon" Phoenix were backing up Kris Linnell in his war with former allies Ashe and Curve. A mystery attack on Phoenix left Spud to go it alone against both members of the New Breed in July - a fabulously engrossing contest ending when Linnell ran in to replace Luke....and losing. Next month, Spud, Phoenix and Linnell fought Ashe, Curve and SUWA in a terrific trios match at "Summer Sizzler", after which Luke's unknown attackers were revealed as their old enemies from just about anywhere in the country, Jack Storm and Dave Moralez. With "The Untouchables" reigining as IPW UK tag champions, the TLC grudge match at "2nd Anniversary Weekender" in September was for was the gold. An utterly fantastic dramatic and emotional epic eventually saw Spud pull down the gold belts from that tatty piece of string that still hangs above the Orpington Halls...sep06140mg4.jpgPhoto - UK Hat GuyUp in the FWA, Spud had been engaged in a lengthy feud with "The Gift" Ross Jordan, which began in 2005 when the increasingly heel Jordan began resorting to ugly tactics to get the better of Spud as they chased the Flyweight title. Since then, the situation had escalated beyond the championship (indeed, continuing long after Jordan had lost the belt to Pac), culminating in a decisive Last Man Standing match in Morecambe in September. Spud went over in a reportedly excellent bout. Then, after a trip to GPW were he put over one of their lead heels (Joseph Haaaayes) in a fine "Crazy Cruiser8" qualifier, it was back to 1PW for their "1st Anniversary Show" in October. Spud again fought Sterling James Keenan in tag action, taking Samoa Joe and Darkside as his partners in a dull losing effort to SJK, Moralez and Jack Storm. The very next day, Spud and Phoenix successfully defended their IPW UK Tag Team Championship in a TLC rematch with Storm/Moralez, which was every bit the cracker as the original. Beating the former champs for the second consecutive time, as well as notching up successful defences against Maximum Head (Max Voltage and Dan Head) and EntouRAGE (Mark Sloan and "The Man With The Smallest Arms And The Longest Hair" Ollie Burns) all in the month of October, the Dragonhearts were on a roll. The night of the second TLC match against The Untouchables was also the night that the IPW:UK vs. FWA feud really kicked off. Siding firmly with IPW:UK as one of their key players for the wars ahead, Spud rejected his FWA representation in the National Under-23 Championships in Ware (where?), Hertfordshire and appeared in that tournament as a "freelance" entrant. A freelance entrant that was demolished by Sam Slam. This was Sam's night, and Spud made sure the right man was made to look incredible in a great first round match. Then, the next night found Spud representing IPW:UK in the 6-man "Brawl at the Hall" elimination tag against Team FWA, going down in a passionate effort (oo err). Going down to an injury, however, Spud would not see any more action in 2006.When he returned to the ring in January 2007, things had changed. First, he was no longer IPW UK Tag Champion, since the substitute Dragonhearts (Phoenix and Bubblegum) had lost the belts to Swiss Money Holding (Are$ and Claudio Castagnoli) at "The Dome Show" in Colchester. Second, the 1PW that had shown so much faith in Spud had apparently gone belly-up, and 3CW was holding a tribute show in the Doncaster Dome in its honour. Coming full circle in a fitting moment, Spud teamed with his old nemesis (the now-fully-babyface) Keenan to down Storm and Moralez to tie off all loose ends as 1PW was consigned to the history books like UWA, UCW, GWF, WrestleXpress, X Wrestling and countless others before it. A tearful Spud even gave tribute to 1PW in an emotional speech. Just days later, it turned out that 1PW wasn't liquidated after all and plans were being made for the "Resurrection" at Easter...Spud's first match back in IPW:UK was part of IPW vs. FWA, as he went head-to-head with "Wonderkid" Jonny Storm in a gripping and heated grudge match at "No Escape" in January (the same event that had hosted the legendary Spud vs. Jack Storm Dog Collar Chain match the year before). Up until this point, FWA had been winning the war convincingly. Such a great moment, then, when Spud got that first big win in front of the home Orpington fans. His next IPW:UK involvement was away from the FWA antics, as the proper Dragonhearts challenged the not-exactly-proper Swiss Money Holding (represented on this occasion by Are$ and Marc Roudin) for the belts at "Battle Two" in February. The night before however, the DHs made their RQW debut against The Kartel in a good match in Bethnal Green - advancing in the RQW Tag Team Title Tournament by DQ when Sha and Terry used a billy club. Then, at the IPW:UK show, a really good, lively tag match ended with SMH still holding tight. When the big "Final Frontiers" rolled around in March, IPW:UK's Spud was paired off against FWA's Hade Vansen (who had attacked him in an unannounced surprise appearance on a prior Orpington show) in a rematch of their fabulous Hoddesdon FWA match from 2 years previous. The bout didn't live up to the original, but was a decent scrap on the undercard of an unforgettable night.1PW came back from the dead in April, and Spud was still a part of it, losing to James Wallace/Jay Phoenix/whatever. He then returned to the Liverpool Olympia for IPW:UK, for 2 afternoon bonus shows on the "King of Europe Cup" weekender. At "A Taste of IPW", he challenged champion ANDY SIMMONZ!! in a decent bout, but lost to 2 low blows and a jumping martinete. The, the next day at "Another Taste of IPW", Spud and Dragon Phoenix finally had their long-await tag title match against the "real" Swiss Money Holding, losing to Castagnoli and Are$ in an utterly superb offering. Spud wasn't involved in the main "KOEC" events, but he had just had the match of the entire weekend.1PW was back in June for "Know Your Enemy". Spud somehow managed to appear on both this show in Doncaster (where he and Phoenix won the vacant 1PW World Tag Team Titles in a Gauntley Gauntlet. Actually, I made that name up - it sounded cool) as well as making his debut for the rebranded "XWA" (where he and El Ligero beat Ross Jordan and The Juice) 120 miles away in Morecambe.......on the very same night. Then on Night Two of "Know Your Enemy" the Dragonhearts won a 4-way tag to retain. Shame they didn't actually have any belts to represent their championship, since they were stolen by the returning Damned Nation in a killer angle (which set up a mega brawl on 1PW latest show, "Invincible", this past weekend). Then, the RQW Tag Team Title Tournament finally got back underway in August, with the new-look Dragonhearts (Spud and Ross Jordan, since Dragon Phoenix is virtually retired except for very rare occasions) being dumped out by Jack Storm and Dave Moralez (who else?!?) when Spud's partner walked out on him. While all of this has been going on, Spud has continued to be the major cog around which SAS Wrestling revolves. Feuding non-stop with "Charming" Don Charles and his Team Charming (Jack Storm, Dave Moralez and Martin Stone), Spud has been the company ace. He lost to "New Sensation" Saul Adams in August and beat Moralez in October (both in Pinner, London), before going into November's 4-man tournament to decide the first ever SAS Champion. Beating Martin Stone in the semi-final by DQ, Spud suffered one hell of a beating, but somehow struggled back out for the main event final against his perrenial arch-rival Storm. An absorbing, engrossing, captivating, spellbinding, enthralling and emotionally-gripping encounter saw Spud overcome all the odds to finally get his heroic moment and beat Jack in a truly excellent match to win the Championship. As SAS made its debut in Birmingham in December, Spud and Phoenix teamed up once again to defeat Storm and Moralez in the main event. Back at Pinner in February 2007, however, the title rematch saw Storm defeat Spud to lift the gold. Traded wins with Moralez over the next 2 shows were followed by a match with the other Team Charming member, Martin Stone in June. Marking Stone's babyface turn, "The Guv'nor" turned on his team-mates and gifted Spud the victory by count-out. SAS' biggest ever show then took place in July in Birmingham, Spud pinning Dave Moralez to win the series being one of the highlights of "Elite Uprising", the culmination of everything SAS had worked towards for the past 2 years. A 6-man tag team victory (with Stone and Jake, over Storm, Moralez and "Charming" Don himself) now sets up Spud's opportunity to finally put all of the past 2+ years to rest as he gets manager Don Charles in a "Bring Your Jeans" streetfight at the next show.Another superb year for Spud sees him firmly established as one of the UK's undoubted best. An excellent in-ring story-teller is a master at controlling the audience's emotions, and thus it is no surprise to see him cap one of his best ever years with this terrific UKFF 50 placing.spudol8.jpgPhoto - www.ipwuk.com****************************************************Still to come.....the top 3!!!!!(alphabetical order)PacMartin StoneDoug Williams

No. 3 - "The Guv'nor" Martin Stone

2006 Ranking: 11

2005 Ranking: 15

Moving Up

East-End hardnut moves up the rankings for the 2nd consecutive year after his best ever 12 months in the ring, securing his best ever UKFF 50 finish.

In July 2006, Martin Stone beat Ashe in Romford, East London to become the new LDN British Heavyweight Champion at the first TV taping for LDN's "Capital TV" show on The Wrestling Channel. However, a fallout between Stone and LDN manager Sanjay Bagga meant that this was Stone's last ever LDN appearance, and as such he was stripped of the belt (with a new champion being crowned in a 4-man double-elimination knock-out tournament at the next tapings).

As the reigning IPW UK Champion, Martin Stone was technically a member of the heel Untouchables stable with Jack Storm, Jonny Storm and Dave Moralez. Indeed, the foursome had just teamed up to defeat Team 3CW at IPW:UK "Battle Royale 2006". However, the Orpington fans loved him as one of their own, with his no-nonsense, arse-kicking, hard-working ethic drawing respect and cheers. Over in SAS, he was also aligned with Jack and Dave in "Charming" Don Charles stable of Team Charming, making life miserable for Spud and Luke "Dragon" Phoenix.

Up north, Stone was starting to establish himself in 1PW in a hard-hitting series against Iceman, having made his debut there against the Stanley hardcase at "Fight Club" in May 2006. "Fight Club II" took place in July 2006, and featured a rematch, Iceman winning by knockout. 4 weeks later at "Devils Due" in Hull, Stone was revealed as Jay Phoenix's nominated opponent for Samoa Joe, but went down in another punishing affair.

Back in IPW:UK, Stone saw off separate title challenges from 3CW's talented Kid Richie and SAS' useless Jake at the "Royale Rewards" event in July, before being entered into the 3-way Battle of Champions at "Frontiers of Honor II" in Swanley (boo) in August. Battling FWA British Heavyweight Champion Robbie Brookside and ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson, the heel Stone was an undoubted crowd favourite, He saw victory pass him by, however, as he was attacked by ANDY SIMMONZ!!. As Stone and SIMMONZ!! brawled, Danielson pinned Brookside to give ROH the win. The next day, Stone beat Dragon Aisu in a tremendous scrap at "Ware is IPW?!", and then immediately zoomed up the A1 to Doncaster to easily beat ANDY SIMMONZ!! twice in short succession at 1PW "Invincible". A further match against Iceman immediately after got out of control, as the two rivals fought to a wild double-countout to continue the feud. A slight injury put him out of the next day's IPW:UK "Summer Sizzler", but Stone was back in action for the IPW:UK "2nd Anniversary Weekender".

That weekend saw Stone notch up a further 3 successful title defences across the weekend. After beating Pac in an excellent bout on Night One, he smashed the clueless Big Mac-eating Peter Nixon in brutal fashion on the 2nd day's afternoon show (and then told him to "go get some training") before downing James Tighe in another good match on Night Two. The next month (October), the Stone vs. Iceman feud headed to IPW:UK as they went to war in Swanley (boo) in a brilliant all-out brawl. The next week, Ice and Stone fought again, this time back in 1PW and this time with the addition of FWA legend Ulf Herman in a 3-way hardcore match at the 1PW "First Anniversary Show". Using chairs, buckets, pins, guardrails and a car door, the wild and heated fight was one of only 2-3 highlights of a disappointingly ordinary show. The next day, it was time to leave the hardcore stuff behind as he wrestled Colt Cabana at IPW:UK "Hotwired" in the Broxbourne Civic Hall in Hoddesdon. Ironically, it was the straight-up wrestling match that saw Stone suffer a knee injury during the early stages, contributing to a poor bout and putting him out of action for the next week's "Extreme Measures III" show. "Hotwired" also marked the real start of the IPW:UK vs. FWA feud, as Greg "The Truth" Lambert invaded the show to make the challenge for a "winner takes all" match in 2007. IPW:UK promoter Daniel Edler wasted no time in selecting Stone as IPW:UK's representative to face FWA's "Showstealer" Alex Shane, who announced his return by smashing a chair over Edler's head.

At "Extreme Measures III", Stone cut a passionate "call to arms" speech against the FWA, but was ambushed by Alex Shane and Jorge Castano, ho left him laying. Later that night, he was supposed to defend his IPW UK Title against the winner of the Extreme Measures Tournament in an Iron Fist Match (30-minute Iron Man match, with sudden death KO). That turned out to be Leeeeeeeeeeee Rooooooooooooyy KINCAIDE, but fans were denied a chance to see a rematch of their fabulous March bout due to Stone being in no fit state to perform. Stone told Leeeeeeeee Roooooooooyy that he was guaranteed his title shot another time, and that looked like that. Fans started to leave....until ANDY SIMMONZ!! appeared on the stage. SIMMONZ!! was also on the shelf with an injury, thus he spoke from his wheelchair to announce that he was "cashing in" his Royale Reward (by winning June's "Battle Royale", SIMMONZ!! had earned the right to make any one match he wanted, any time he wanted). Taking advantage of Stone's "disability", SIMMONZ!! set up a No DQ, Falls Count Anywhere match for the IPW UK Title, and with the aid of his Hated Heroes (Aviv Maayan and LT Summers), he shockingly pinned Stone from his wheelchair to end Stone's year+ title reign, become the new champ, and also mark the "official" babyface turn for Stone.

Stone's chance for revenge against SIMMONZ!! and the Hated Heroes would have to wait. With the "Rebirth" of RQW in November, Stone was immediately positioned as that promotion's top star. Defeating Doug Williams in a terrific match at York Hall, he earned his place in the RQW British Heavyweight Title tournament. He then scored one for IPW:UK by downing the FWA's returning former All-England Champion Scottie Rock at "Brawl in the Hall". In what seemed a break from IPW:UK vs. FWA action, Stone then got his IPW UK Title rematch in Swanley (boo) at "Christmas Cracker" facing Aviv Maayan (subbing for the still injured ANDY SIMMONZ!!). Turned out, however, that FWA's Charlie Rage was on hand to spoil the party, running in and costing Stone the title. Stone then beat Rage in a surprisingly good IPW:UK vs. FWA match the next day in Colchester.

2006 ended on a major high for Martin. At RQW's one-night British Heavyweight Title tournament, he beat Iceman (him again) in a short but very sweet opening round bout, defeated Aviv Maayan in a decent semi-final, and then pinned Pac in a super final to cement his place as RQW figurehead. In an emotional victory speech, Stone dedicated his win to the people who support him, and his family. As well as RQW Champion, Stone was well and truly accepted as the people's champion. Then, when 1PW went tits up and cancelled their "No Turning Back" show, RQW stepped in to save the Great Muta's UK appearance. Thus, as RQW ace, Stone was thrust into the biggest match of his career to open up 2007, losing a non-title match to the NJPW and AJPW legend at York Hall. Since then, he has turned back British Championship challenges from Ricky Knight, Jody Fleisch, Takeshi Rikio and Drew Galloway on subsequent 2007 RQW shows, none of which fell short of decent.

Back to IPW:UK. As the feud raged on, Stone scored wins over FWA's Jorge Castano ("No Escape"), Doug Williams ("Battle One") and James Tighe ("Battle Two") to set him up for the mystery FWA representative that he would now be facing at "Final Frontiers" (Alex Shane had to withdraw through injury). That turned out to be Stone's UK wrestling idol and former FWA British Heavyweight Champion Flash Barker, who returned to the ring for only his 2nd match in 3-and-a-half years. Stone and Barker went at it in a dramatic and emotional epic, featuring brawling, wrestling, and run-ins from the entire rosters of FWA and IPW:UK. With the excitement level at fever pitch, Stone pinned Barker to officially close the FWA once and for all. With the FWA feud over and done with, and a successful RQW Title defence against Darren Burridge on an XS:W show the following week, it was now time to start righting all those who had done him wrong....

....starting with ANDY SIMMONZ!! Beating SIMMONZ!! in a non-title match on the undercard of IPW:UK's "Battle Royale 2007" in April, Stone was beaten down by the Hated Heroes. Stone's Untouchables team-mates Jack Storm and Moralez ran out to apparently make the save, but after the Heroes had backed down they turned on Stone, officially ending his association with the group. Just one week later, Moralez and Storm would attack Stone again, this time causing the DQ as Martin squared off against TNA's Rhino in a decent big-man scrap in Liverpool. IPW:UK were in Liverpool, of course, because they were providing the afternoon entertainment on the "King of Europe Cup" weekend. Stone was entered into the tournament itself, and later that night he fell to a first round defeat to Pro Wrestling NOAH's Go Shiozaki in the best match of the entire first day. On the 2nd afternoon IPW:UK card, Stone fought Zebra Kid in an outstanding contest, picking up the big win. Finally, no longer a part of the KOE tournament, Stone led the promising Atsushi Aoki and the brilliant El Generico against the crap Trent Acid and the fabulous Swiss Money Holding (Claudio Castagnoli and Are$) in an exciting elimination tag. Given the starring role, Stone looked, quite frankly, awesome as he was left to fight both Are$ and "Double-C", overcoming the odds to end his weekend in the spotlight. Working his fucking arse off in 4 matches across 1 weekend, it is doubtful that Stone had ever looked any better up unitl this point.

DPSCamera_0149_JPG.jpg

Revenge against the Untouchables was on the cards in May when Stone teamed with another former member in Jonny Storm to defeat Jack and Dave at "Royale Rewards". Martin then fought Moralez in singles at "The June Show!!" in June. Jack got involved again, but Stone revealed back-up in the form of his ex-FWA tag partner (and champion) Stixx, making his IPW:UK debut. Stixx n' Stone then beat Moralez and Storm at the appropriately-titled "Unfinished Business" to sratch off the Untouchables from Stone's Hit List. Next up, The Hated Heroes....then surely a feud against Stixx is waiting in the wings...

Of course, this is only some of what Stone has been up to. In SAS, he finally turned on Team Charming and allowed Spud to coast to victory, then fought his former ally Jack Storm for the SAS Championship in the main event of SAS' biggest ever show, "Elie Uprising" in July in Birmingham. He lost, but then teamed with Spud and Jake to down Storm, Moralez and Don Charles in a mega-grudge match.

In Swindon for 4FW (just about the only place in the country where Stone is still a heel), Martin is a part of The Firm, the lead faction that causes problems for the recommended promotion's babyfaces. In NWA-UK, he's about to kick-off a war with Jon Ryan that could be one of the great wrestling rivalrie of the next 12 months.

Stone also headed north again to become a regular for Teesside's 3 Count Wrestling, where he firstly defended his RQW Title in a winning effort over a man of similar size, stature, power and style in "Vigilante" Johnny Moss, in somewhat of a north vs. south dream match. After the match (in Northallerton, North Yorkshire in May), Moss attacked Stone, setting up a rematch at "No Remorse" the following week in Billingham. With that bout unable to settle anything between the two, they were scheduled to face off in a tag match at "Midsummer Showdown" (with "Mr 50-50" Dan Evans and "What a Prick" Martin Kirby as partners), but travel complications saw that card being altered around into a Stone vs. Moss vs. Evans 3-way. The match was incredibly disappointing but, again, saw nothing decided between Moss and Stone. They are now scheduled to finally find out who is the better man as their feud comes to an end at "Darkest Deeds IV", traditionally 3CW's biggest and most important show of the year (though their November 2007 super-priced 1PW supershow in Middlesbrough may change that). The fact that the bout is a Last Man Standing contest should ensure there is no doubt this time.

After an outstanding year full of accomplishments both in and out of the ring, Stone sits pretty as the lead face for the current wave of British wrestling. In the best shape of his life and having worked incredibly hard to continually make improvements to every single aspect of his game, it is surely only a matter of time before international booking start to come Stone's way. His announced appearance for PWG in October may herald the opening of a few doors...

I really hope that Pac isn't number one.The results have surprised me this year at all levels. I never expected Ligero and Bubblegum to be so high up the list, but they do deserve to be in the top ten after their hard work this year. Ligero's feud with Juice in GPW was excellent.I've loved watching Spud in SAS and in Morcambe, so it's good to see him maintain his spot in the list.Very surprising to me were the relatively low positions of Jonny Storm, Robbie Brookside and Darren Burridge - all of whom I expected to see in the top 5 or just outside.

Other way round, surely? :) Nother good write up there. I was expecting Stone to maybe top out this year...I still think Doug will take the whole thing though.

Maybe it says something about the top competitors in this country at the moment that those great talents aren't contending for the top spots. Or, in the Storm case, something about familarity breeding contempt?BTW, Pac would be a more than worthy winner for this for me. Just got done watching his IPW:UK Liverpool match against El Generico. It wasn't even the best match between them, but was still a bloody cracker (and I think he's got Danielson in ROH at some point this weekend as well). I know it's maybe a style thing (and I'm not one for the flippy types in general) that divides people on him, but I'm not sure if there's anyone who's putting on consistantly jaw-dropping matches at the same level he is anywhere in this country (and you might even argue, anywhere in the world)...
