External Hard Drive/Ipod question

Recommended Posts

My memory on my Hard Drive was running really low so I got an external HD. I transfered all my albums and Itunes libabry over to the external and deleted them from my Hard Drive. When I opened up Itunes they had all been deleted :( and when I add songs to the libary again it automatically opens a new folder in "my music" on my hard drive. When I delete it from there it gets deleated from the external as well. Im raging as I was wanting to get an Ipod classic but dont see the point if all the songs I add get put on my local disk as well as my external, which takes up space I dont have on my local disk. Anyone now how I can just get my Itunes libary to be on my external and not open a folderon my local as well. Thanks

I did that a while ago too. Whilst not being the most tech orientated on here, i find that any tracks that come up with an exclamation mark (!) are only on the HDD...so i just plug that in anytime i want to update my Ipod. That way it saves space on my laptop. Never had a problem with it like you did though. It automatically finds where the tracks are and does the rest for me. Maybe it wasnt recognising the soure file for the music?

Not much help, perhaps, but thats how i work round the space issue.

I can't remember the exact steps, but I think if you go to "File" there's an option called "Import From Folder" or something. Find the folder on your external hard drive and it should re-import the songs into your library.

However, I'm not sure if this just re-builds iTune's library, or whether it re-copies the files back to the original iTunes music library. If it's the latter, it may be worth investigating what SiMania said.

Ignore Khemical. As SiMani said, you need to point iTunes at the new location of your mp3s. Then it will probably rebuild a new library file based on the new location, could take a while but it's necessary.

The one REALLY shit thing about iTunes is that if you have 2 profiles on a Mac, say me and Mrs Loki, you can't just get both of your iTunes to share the same library file. So if I import new tunes through my iTunes, she doesn't see them on her side. Rubbish.

Cheers guys, thats great. Have transferd all my songs over from my external to my Itunes libary :) When I add new songs will it automatically be saved in my external from now on? Also Im going to be getting a classic in the next few weeks so am I able to transfer my libary from my touch over to there? Thanks

  • 6 months later...

I'll plonk my question on this thread

Can anyone help me - is there anyway to recover data from an external hard drive?

I dropped mine and now when I plug it into my laptop/PS3/computer, it is unable to read the data, my music etc and doesn't even recognise it...

The ports work fine so it seems it's the hard drive itself or the quite possibly the usb wire?

You should take it to a specialist. Mine started smoking during a lesson stank quite bad but this was the day when external USB drives powered purely by on 1 USB 2 port. Unfortunatly my pc died a few days before and then my external drive went up in smoke and couldnt be recovered and while taking to a specialist my hard drive somehow caused the repair guy's G5 Mac processor to go too :S

In conclusion get someone to look at it otherwise you've lost it all.

Cheers, I have 15 years of music on it, loads of pix and all the recent Family Guy, South Park episodes and my collection of Sunny Leone porn!

I think I'll be buying a few 16gb usb sticks today to keep as extra back up.
