  1. Cat in the Brain - Nightmare Concert

A Horror Director, while shooting his latest film, begins to see gore and violence wherever he goes. He cant seem to seperate what is real and what is fantasy, so he visits a psychiatrist for help. After that real killings start to happen in the style of the film directors movies. How crazy has he went where fantasy and reality are so mixed together he cant distinguish what is real and what is not.

This is a `Video nasty` exploitation film that made the BBFC`s Banned list. Directed by (and starring) Italian shockmaster Lucio Fulci (New york ripper, Zombie flesh eaters) if you were a child of the 80s and early 90s you would have given your right arm to see one of the 4th generation copied video tapes of his films.

The film itself isn`t great. I watched it with an open mind and not much background to the thing. Its a Gore film without a doubt, within the first 3 minutes a woman is chopped to pieces with a chainsaw, and i`m not talking Texas chainsaw massacre style, I`m talking full gorey detail, cheap exploitation style. Its actually quite disturbing. The whole film is like that, severed heads, piano wire half decapitation, if you`ve ever seen an italian horror film you`ll know that nothing is left to the imaginaton. I wasn`t a big fan of the film. Quick cuts, random events and an almost non existant plot made it not very watchable.

Then, as with every film I watch, i researched it. Suddenly everything fell into place. But behind the gore, the sexual violence, the nazi torture, random decapitations and chainsaw massacres, its a comedy! a comedy! Why I didnt see that in the film i`ll never know.

Its a self parady about how society thinks that violence leads to violence. How a deranged mind of a Horror film director must be a savage psychopath just awaiting to happen. Then when I put it into context it suddenly became a great film. Knowing what it was about makes it a good film. Weirdly true.

And whats even more weird, in an even bigger self parody, is that this banned gorefest is available uncut in the UK. Not only that i had actually bought a copy of it from PoundLand! Yes, this disturbing `Video nasty` is available uncut in PoundLand! That is the most disturbing thing of all

Certainly worth a watch if your looking to kill 90 minutes with ultra violence.

  2. Can anyone recommend any other 'end of the world'/'terrorist attack' type films that are good but less well known?

Last Night is underrated and not very well known, I think it went straight to video over here.

Just finished watching Last Night its depressing as hell but gives you a fresh lease for life.

Patrick is a very grey man. But with the earth only having 4 hours till its destroyed it doesnt make much difference. So we follow Patrick through his last final hours of life and how other characters interweave together each having an influence over the other.

I`m suprised this hasn`t done better than it has. Its released by Lionsgate movies, the guys that do the Saw films and horror stuff so a rerelease I believe would actually do quite well. Its a really good movie if you like character development and understanding. Very dark humour but it works really well. Starts off very slowly, introduces a character here and there but as it moves foward, pretty slowely but enough to keep you interested, you begin to understand that each person has their own end of the world outlook and each connect with each other in some way.

Its pretty doom and gloom all over but by the end I had a smile on my face and realised i`d enjoyed it alot more than I thought I would.

    Certainly worth a watch.

    Cheers Gladstone

  3. His smile is aquard and he just looks constipated. Diaz seems to out shine him in this film which again seems very strange. The musical score doesn`t suit some of the scenes.

That is an amazing typo of 'awkward'. Seriously impressive.

Anyway.. that shouldn't be strange, it should be expected, because she's a consistently better actor than he is.

:) I`m glad someone almost seen the pun there. was supposed to represent the fact that not only is it awkward but its so awkward that it makes the word awkward seem awkward.

And most folk are better actors than Cruise but in a motion picture starring Cruise he`s normally the headline star. I was suprised Diaz had so much in the film considering he was there. Made for a strange viewing atmosphere.

  4. saw Knight and Day on saturday, i thought it was good plenty of action, some parts quite funny i thought. no the best acting but a good film.

    Yep.

The strangest thing I found was Cruise trying to be funny! Just doesn`t sit right at all. His smile is aquard and he just looks constipated. Diaz seems to out shine him in this film which again seems very strange. The musical score doesn`t suit some of the scenes.

Some of the action is great. The Bull running is an awsome set up but the film just doesnt seem to gel together. Almost as if they had the concept for a good story, action scenes and characters but all from different movies, put them all into one movie and they just dont combine right.

Worth a watch but leaves you feeling quite strange

  5. Right at Your Door

A young couple start their day as normal, she heads off to work and he stays at home! As he listens to the radio he finds out that 3 dirty bombs have exploded in the LA area. Mass panic sets in. He heads out to find his wife but discovers that the police have blocked the roads heading to the city. Radio advice tells that the bombs are chemical bombs and that the ash cloud heading his way is toxic. He must lock down his home, make it air tight, wait for his wife to get home (if shes even alive). He secures his home with the help of his neibours handyman. Then his wife returns home. He cant let her in or they`ll both die, but the military are organising anti-biotics to counter the toxins. They just have to wait until the specialist unit arrives with help. But she discovers that they`re taking exposed people away in white vans. What do they do? Wait? Look for help? Die together?

This is probably one of the better post 9-11 films. The cast is very few, possible 12 folk in the entire film, the budget is non-existant and theres no great action or explosions. But the tension and terror is well created, using quick cuts and a radio voice over to create whats happening without showing any of it. Very similar to Pontypool in its story telling arc.

The way in which it tackles certain subjects its very good bordering on excellent. The police handling of the situation, the mass radio panic with little to no information and the outside the effected area family phonecalls to the effected couple are all excellent. It does very well to create the dread, panic and desperate feel that (I believe) you would feel in this situation.

But the film just doen`t seem to fit well. It doesnt hold right for some reason. I dont know what it is but its just a little away from being great. After about the half way point the atmosphere collapses somewhat and you dont seem to care what happens but you want to stay till the end. And its worth it for the final section :)

If your into post appocolyptic psychological thrillers then its worth a watch. Theres a few new ways to look at things but overall a good outing thats not too far away from being great.

  6. Inception.

Went to see it at a special midnight showing last night. I'm not gonna say too much because most won't have seen it yet but it's not very often I walk out of a cinema with chills. It was without a doubt the best film I have seen in years. I was completely amazed and will definitely be seeing it again at the next opportunity.

The Idea and concept is truely incredible. Once you get your head around the thing its an excellent film. The only downside I believe is that theres too much action for this style of film, its too american. I believe if it had been made say by a `foreign` (AKA Non-American) film maker it would certainly have been truely aw-inspiring. Depth is amazing just too much bang bang and not enough `OOhhhh mind fuck` for my total liking. But most certainly worth a watch especiallly on the big screen.

  7. Predators

Like most guys in my generation i`m a fan boy.

from seeing all the movies to fan films to buying the action figures to graphic novels, I`ve done it all. But after the dissapointing AVP and the lets please forget Requiem, I wasn`t holding out too much for Predators (OK I lie, i was hoping so friggin much this would save the franchise)

Did this movie manage to pull off a small miracle of movie magic?

    Oh Yes!

<-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler

Bringing the Jungle back was a plain and simple move, knowing that the imigery of predator was the Jungle Location. Having guys randomly firing off hundreds of rounds in the fleeting hope of killing something was an excellent move again

I would have liked (if I havent missed it) an Alien skull in the camp site. Would have marked out big style

Bringing in the loony half way through kept the attention in the plot, allowing the characters to know more (and allowing us to know more) without some stupid find of a diary or something or equal crindgeworthyness.

And the biggest plot drop which will allow the franchise to continue on its merry way was the inclusion of the Predator clans. This was an excellent move as now you have at least a trilogy of how these clans are fighting and how their society works. One techno heads and one more brutal fighters.

    [close spoiler]

    ");document.close();

So yes, this fan boy is smiling and is now awaiting the next installment of an excellent franchise.

  8. Ghost Rider

I`m going through a Superhero phase right now so decided to give Ghost Rider a go (even if I`ve heard nothing but bad reviews about it)

NIcolas cage stars as Johnny Blaze, a daredevil hotshot stunt rider who, along with his father, have a travelling circus style stunt show. After Johnny discovers his father has cancer a mysterious man turns up and offers a contract where by his fathers cancer will be cured but Johnny must give his soul to the mystery man. Several years later the mystery man returns and claims johnnys soul but says that he will release his soul back to him if he will destroy a demon for him, Johnny agrees and so the mystery man gives johnny the power of the Ghost Rider, the devils Bounty Hunter.

This is a strange film. On one hand you have everything a throwaway blockbuster should have, A superhero link, some very fine special effects, not a terrible plot and a name (cage) for the poster.

On the other hand you have a very souless movie. Theres just nothing in the film that hooks you in, makes you stay or captivates your imagination. Which is a shame as everything is there.

The special effects are great. When Cage changes into the Ghost rider the flame effects are excellent.

But Cage is a terrible lead role, his acting is truely awful and theres nothing there that doesn`t seem like cardboard.

The plot isnt bad. Theres a big backstory of a contract for 1000 souls and a demon for the bad guy.

But the bad demon guy just doesnt seem scary nor threatening. they try to go for the mysterious slow deadly demon but it comes across as lazy and just plain plain.

Theres some excellent scenes and shots that i actually liked, the ghost rider on the roof and the helecopter was an excellent image

But then not 15 seconds later it all went to shit.

It just seemed all too `meh`. The film just seemed plain, nothing in the film that screamed `wow` and now I read theres a sequel. Hopefully they manage to find that factor that`ll make it worthy of a cinema viewing.

  9. Where's that Loose Change video?

    EDIT: Found it.

cant link to the youtube but the name rings a bell. I think thats the documentary i`m thinking about.

After a quick search yea, thats the documentary i`m thinking about. I probably seen the 2nd edition of it a good few years ago. Seems its caught on quite a bit since then.

Thanks for finding it for me, think i`ll need to get the 4th edition to catch up on whats happening.

  10. It was Jimmy Kahoona's post that set me off when he said that holograms were far fetched, but there's evidence that it was controlled explosives.

I never said `there`s evidence that it was controlled`

    My actual quote is,

Evidence shows that the buildings did collapse as they would have if there had been explosives placed throughout the floors.

Unfortunently i`m at work and cant link to any footage to show the comparison between a controlled explosion demolition and the actual collapse of one of the towers which I am reffering too.

  11. Visionaries! Knights of the magical light!

Now Holograms are, in this repliers thoughts, perhaps a little too far fetched. Evidence shows that the buildings did collapse as they would have if there had been explosives placed throughout the floors. And the attack on the pentagon was a missile attack Footage has shown this (yet noone seems to care!) So I`m in the conspiracy camp but Holograms!

  12. I saw Rec2 at the car boot sale on Sunday but didnt pick it up as wasnt sure of the quality.

I did however pick up a perfect copy of Kick Ass which was clearly lifted of the upcoming DVD print.

Do they still have dodgy tape,, DVD sellers at car boot sales?

I would have thought that everyone would just download them!

Add in the annoying `You wouldn`t steal a Car` shite you get on EVERY original dvd rip, I thought that would put people off doing this! :D

  13. Prince of Persia: The sands of Time

Went to see this on the big screen. We all know the premise, based on a game, disneys new pirates movie. More in the pipelines. Yawn.

Its certainly not a bad film. Grab some popcorn, switch brain to neutral and enjoy the imagery and cool looking stuff, some mass battles and some sword fights. Great for any blockbuster movie.

But thats pretty much where it ends for me. I suppose the first major thing that killed it for me was Jake Gyllenhaal. Playing the lead character and i didnt connect with him one bit. It just felt that he had no screen chemistry one bit. It was almost like he was going to turn to camera and say `Wow, this movie is cool!` and then go back to doing action things. Didnt like him.

Gemma Arterton. The female love interest. She looked far too much like Xena without actually being Lucy Lawless. Now if they had put Lucy Lawless in the film I would buy the Blu-Ray and frame by frame stepped through the entire film Loving Lucy but... sorry went somewhere there I shouldn`t. Emm,,

Ben Kingsly, Cant fault Ben, he tried his hardest here.

<-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler

But you know right from the first shot of him hes the bad guy and just sit and wait till hes revealed so you can have the slight satisfaction you knew right from the start!

    [close spoiler]

    ");document.close();

And the Action scenes, Now making each and every fight fast, slow and blurry does not make action any more actiony. When will hollywood realise this? Make good action scenes not bad action scenes and make them fast , slow and blurry!

    The ending....

<-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler

Has anyone seen family Guy, the episode where `stewie kills lous`? well watch the last minute of that double episode and it sums this entire movie up!

    [close spoiler]

    ");document.close();

So to cut a long story short,

    TOO LATE

OK action adventure but more to follow!

  14. It also brings me to another point. Why have exploitation movies become the "in" thing for the horror genre? I've got nothing against violence and brutality on screen, but so many times i just isn't done well. You need to create an emotional investment with characters for people to give a crap about them, its as simple as that. Final Destination is the worst at this particular crime, its like they don't realise that movies are a storytelling device. I can't stand these films and I really don't understand why they're so popular. I just find myself bored by them all. Its just meaningless spectacle that I can't even give a damn about. It seems as the horror genre, and I'm really only talking about Hollywood here, has gone back to the origins of cinema where people were amazed to watch trains pull up at stations.

These films are safe. people know that if they go to the cinema, they can safely let themselfs be drawn into the crappy film knowing that in about 90 minutes later they can stand up and go home. Everything they see on screen will be made up and controlled by the director. Everyone knows they`re crap movies but their safe. Now if you sat infront of your PC for 90minutes looking for exploitation noone would walk away safely. Infact the amount of stuff i`ve seen i`m suprised i`ve not put a gun to my head!

The reason that Canniball Holocaust was so `good` wasn`t the fact it was a good movie it was the fact noone knew during the boom days of the Video Nasties, that it was staged and just a movie. The inclusion of the animal deaths was to help blend these reality and fiction barriers. The 2nd and 3rd generation videos blurred the crappy special effects and with no info on it (the internet didnt exist in those days) all you knew was the urban myths and what your schoolmate who leant you it had made up about it.

Special effects are always being pushed, balanced with the advancements of digital effects now its almost impossible to spot real & fake things in a film. But if its on the big screen you know its fake. so visually your imagination is like `FUCK He just got his head exploded!` while emotionally your saying, `No worries, its all CGI`

Canniball Holocaust, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity are the 3 key aspects of movie blurring between reality and fiction. Canniball did it for home movies, Blair witch did it for handheld camcorders and Paranormal did it for youtube. They were all the first to use the media outlet of the time to combine the reality and fiction wall.

So to cut a long story short,,,,

    TOO LATE

Crappy horror films are safe to watch.

  15. The Invasion

I got watching this one last night on Channel 5, stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig

Its a 2007 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The Invasion of the Body snatchers is an excellent premise, Alien beings come along and duplicate a human (this version has the person being taken over). The duplicate has no emotions but retains memories and experiences of the original, so its a copy of the original just not quite all there.

This version starts off quite slow, setting the scene around strange things happening to others while Kidmans character being the centre point. On Halloween night shes out with her kid and friends when a dog goes mental and attacks one of the kids. They discover a strange piece of skin lying on the ground and as Kidmans characters boyfriend works in a hospital she picks it up and takes it along to him (Craig) then he takes it to the lab to get checked out. (now and this point I kinda found it strange how a psychologist (kidman) randomly picks up a piece of skin off the ground and just happens to be going out with a doctor who has friends in the Bio lab who can spend time analysing random pieces of things lying in the street).

As this is going on the ex husband of kidman turns up (Not Cruise, the characters ex) and wants to take his son out. But hes acting strange. So Kidman hands over her son. That night a strange man turns up at the door of Kidmans and wants in. She fights him off, calls Craig, they get the results back from the lab, the pieces start fitting together, they discover whats happening, que lots of running and searching about.

Apparently it was a flop in the cinemas (I didnt even know it had been released!) and I can understand why, It just feels like a TV Movie. Theres no real cinematic feeling to it. Theres plenty here to be going on with, I liked the transfer of `virus` from person to person and I liked the fact some humans are unaffected, kept the story interesting. The action scenes although in certain places felt out of place (why would Craigs character suddenly know how to drive like james Bond?) were quite good, the car covered in people was especially good in my opinion. The atmosphere was again created, especially in the shop scene. But overall it certainly isnt a cinema movie.

If your a fan of zombie, apocolyptic or Nicole Kidman (she gets down to her pants a few times) films then certainly watch the movie. Just dont think too hard about it.

  16. Even cheap 1980s horror was better than this :(

Sleepaway Camp/ Nightmare Vacation series to start with

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sleepaway-Camp-Tri...ef=pd_cp_d_h__0

    Sleepaway Camp is awsome!

Its a basic slasher film, the second part is so Jason/freddie teen whit and humour its good (the third I never got around to watching, looked terrible)

The final scene of Sleepaway camp is one of those scenes that is seen as a classic horror movie moment. I was genuinely freaked by it.

If your a fan of teen slasher films then watch it. Dont read up on it because the spoilers will spoil it for you. Just watch and understand there are some awsome horror films out there.

  17. Date Night

    Well, where to begin.

Theres some excellent set up comedy and action scenes in this film.

But thats the problem, why are there set up comedy and action scenes in this film?

The film is about a guy and his wife going out on a date night comedy of errors happen and their bored relationship gets a kick. So in my opinion, its aimed at married couples who are going out on a date night. So why have action scenes and strange plots about usb sticks?

I dont understand who this movie is aimed at? the plot would suit any action film (the cop chase, if it had been placed in the correct film, would go down as ingenious!) The comedy aspects are great, especially the storys! but why its all contained in this film I dont know!

Its too old for the younger audience and its too action packed and stupid for the mature audience.

Waste of 2 great movies mishmashed together.

  18. How to train your Dragon

Another of these animation films that looks thrown together and just there to fill the easter/summer void?

    Or so I thought.

It has BIG Vikings Fighting BIG Dragons!

Its great! seriously, Imagine that monster from Cloverfield, now add in Vikings who just want to kill that monster from Cloverfield, fukin A+

Animation is very solid, you can really tell the advancements in tech, one scene has the Viking leader sitting in front of an open log fire, now it wasnt the lighting that I noticed, but the fact they added in his arm hair! Real good.

Plenty of fire breathing and fighting.

Certainly worth a watch on the big screen if you ever liked fantasy films/D&D

(on a slight side note, its amazing just how much times have changed, from this movie of action packed sword and explosions to the rather tame musical numbers of Disneys Petes Dragon from just a generation ago, how the kids are growing up fast!)

  19. I cant say i`m a huge Dr Who fan

Tennant was enjoyable but didnt bring me back (the last story with tennants Dr Dying just didnt do anything for me at all)

But that episode was amazingly good.

As mentioned the last 10 minutes when it all came together was very good. The crack thing I had no idea about until reading a few posts back (never seen the first episode to link it somewhere) but it interests me

But I shall be returning to this, especially if the storylines are that strong.
