  1. I really want to get into X-Men. I picked up X-Men Season 1 at weekend and really enjoyed it. Want to get into it, but at the same time I want to get some backstory on the characters too. So not sure where to go next, and whether picking up Schism and AvX is what I want to do right now or not? Is there any sort of essential reading in anybodies opinion?

  2. AvX is out in collection form next month I believe, might be worth waiting and getting that instead

Like I said, I'm a digital reader. Don't think they get collected digitally as quick, as I was thinking I may pick up Schism also

AvX was 12 issues and various tie in issues.

Are the tie in issues the "Infinite" issues? Just been looking on Comixology and there are 12 issues, and various numbered issues where there is, for example Issue 1 and also Issue 1: Infinite.

No. The tie in comics are basically Avengers and X-Men, etc. They each tell the stories from various characters' points of view.

The 'infinite' comics are specifically digitally-optimised, which are almost animated. It's difficult to explain, but works nicely.

Ah right, cheers for that. Looked earlier and there's like 28 tie-in issues

I've just picked up X-Men Season 1, as I've said before I'm not really all that into X-Men, so thought this may help

  4. Any Marvel fans got an opinion on the Marvel NOW! "re-boot" or whatever it is?

I've never read any marvel comics, but thinking of picking up All New X-Men next month and maybe making that a regular title to pick up

Well it is and isn't a reboot. It's continuing on from Avengers v X-Men (which I quite enjoyed, but I know others didn't) and they're mixing and matching the creative teams. I'm pretty excited about it, got a lot of titles on my subscription. So far the only one out is Uncanny Avengers which was pretty good. It's a good time to jump on but you might wanna look up the events of AvX just to get an idea of what happened.

Yeah, that's why I put re-boot in speech marks, I didn't really know what to call it.

I'll take your advice regarding AvX though. Is that a long series? I'm a Digital reader, so may look at picking it up before the All New X-Men series starts. I'm only really interested in picking up the X-Men titles for now, but that could change

  5. I've been tempted by doing a challenge similar to that above too, but never actually got round to it. Anybody here ever tried anything like that?I remember reading a story a while ago about a guy that did it- starting with a tenner he bet only on absolute bankers (across any sport) and amassed a pot of about

  6. Whilst I don't think you'd really "need" to do so, does anybody recommend getting the whole series of batman stuff? (Batman, Batman & Robin, Bat Girl, Nightwing, etc). I've seen that some of the main story lines cross over into different books, and thought to get the full view of everything, you'd need to get all of them?

I currently get Batman, Batman & Robin, Detective Comics, The Dark Knight, Batgirl, Catwoman and Nightwing. So far, only the Night of Owls storyline has crossed over, and you didn't need to pick up all the other comics, but as i picked up these anyway it helped, so I ended up picking up 1 issue each of Red Hood and the Oultaws, Birds of Prey and All Star Western just to tie them all in.

However, if you wanted to only pick up Batman, you can always just pick up the tie-in issues if you need too, although they're usually not all that important in the grand scheme of things.

Just out of interest pryko, which would be your top 3 Batman titles?

I think Batman is a must, Batman and Robinalso because of Damian, and then personally I do enjoy Arkham Unhinged which is a weekly title related to the Arkham games

  8. I've read American Vampire issues 1 & 2 now. Hoping to get through 3-5 at some stage today. Really like it, soglad of the recommendation. Picked up to issue 10 now too.

On the subject of DC #0's, I reqad Detective Comics last week and thought that was good, and I picked up Batman, Batman and Robin and Batgirl yesterday, but haven't read any yet.

I also have picked up all the Green lantern comics since the New 52 started, but am trying to work my way through the older stuff first, so have not had chance to read Simon Baz Green Lantern #0 yet

  9. I'm up to issue #9. I've liked it for the most part. Batman: The Black Mirror by Scott Snyder is better but his best work is American Vampire, I strongly recommend that series. Anyone else read the mentioned titles?

I keep thinking about picking this up, but I'm a bit anal and would feel it necessary to start at issue 1, so it may be a bit pricey to go all in right away. I may try and pick up 4 or 5 issues a month til I'm caught up with it

The way I've read American Vampire is through the volumes collecting the series and not through single issues. I came across American Vampire: Volume One collecting #1-5 from my library, read it, loved it and found they also had the second and third volumes to my delight. The series needs to be read in order because it charts the history of vampirism and events in the first volume build in the second and third volumes. American Vampire is a brilliant series, the first volume is probably the best one.

I prefer starting from the beginning anyway. That's what I've done with Green Lantern. I wanted to start picking up the new 52 titles, but because the continuity stayed the same from previous, I decided to go back as far as I could and start from scratch so I understood everything. Same with Batman too, but I'm doing that a little slower and building up a pretty big collection. I'll definitely pick up some American Vampire titles soon then

  10. I've caught up with the new 52 batman now. Really loved the Court of Owls arc, Scott Snyder is brilliant, he has such a grip on the character and his story telling is fantastic. Batman: The Dark Knight seems a little "by numbers" in comparison but I still enjoy it so I'll keep that going monthly. I should probably check out the new Dectective Comics run as well but I don't want to over-Batman it all at once.

Before Watchmen is going along nicely. It's had some up and down installments but on the whole it's been a lot better than I'd expected. Even if some issues haven't added anything much they've still been respectful. I've also started reading Brian K Vaughan's Saga which I'm really enjoying, anyone else reading it?

I only really started reading comics when the new 52 started, but I can already see why people rave about Scott Snyder. The Court of Owls was magnificent. Looking forward to the next arc he's doing, starting next month, Death of the Family.

Also, I'm the opposite of you, I'm currently purchasing 6 different Batman titles each month, Batman, The Dark Knight, Detective Comics, Batman and Robin, Arkham Unhinged and Legends of the Dark Knight, the latter 2 being weekly titles as opposed to monthly titles too.

  11. I've not read anything since the New 52 reboot, there's 2 separate Batman titles right?

Edit: yes there is, one by Scott Snyder and one by David Finch. I'll check both out.

    There's actually now

    -Batman

    -Batman:The Dark Knight

    -Batman and Robin

    -Detective Comics

    -Batman:Incorporated

plus for weekly short titles there is

    -Batman:Legends of the Dark Knight

-Batman:Arkham Unhinged (tied in to the Arkham games)

  12. Scott Snyder's next Batman arc is supposed to be revealed tomorrow on DC's website. The next Issue (11) is the culmination of the Court of Owls story, then there's Issue 12 and 0 which are both standalone titles, followed by Issue 13 which is the start of the next year long story arc, which is supposedly featuring his "favourite villain from the rogue's gallery". Should be interesting to see tomorrow.

They've already announced who sad villain is on ign.com...

. It's joker, who was last seen having his face surgically removed.

    ");document.close();

Yeah. I did post on that on july 1st saying it's unveiled tomorrow :p

Looking forward to it. Snyder also said he's going to use The Riddler in 2013 too, so that should be good too

Also, was just wondering if any of the Batman fans have read Batman Incorporated? The previous run was a bit mind boggling in my opinion and I'm not really sure if I enjoyed it or not, but the 2 latest issues have been pretty good. The most recent issue which shows some backstory for Talia was pretty cool indeed.

  14. This is why I fear getting into comics as a replacement for Wrestling. So many different arcs, confusing histories, new characters taking on the old heroes costume (like Batman I think). I'm a completest by nature, so it would likely cost me a small fortune too.

I'm the same. I've been purchasing all the Batman and Green Lantern comics since the start of the New 52, and now want to try and build up the back catalogue, but it's quite an expensive road to go down.

At present I'm only purchasing the Batman ones and it's taking time and money (and space). I'd like to be able to buy the TPB's in digital format. Would be miles easier

  15. Random question: but does any one know why characters such as say, Batman, have multiple titles out on a monthly basis? I would have thought with the reboot, they would have just poolde their efforts into one titular comic per character, rather than fragmenting into Batman, Gotham Knights and whatever else Batman has at the moment. That's what puts me off reading comics on a regular basis, and instead just picking up a graphic novel I can read from start to end.

I agree and disagree with your point.

As pointed out, Batman sells. I currently purchase Batman, Detective Comics, Batman and Robin and Batman: The Dark Knight. I think having all 4 is good, as is said, it sells. But it would be a lot better if the titles were all independent of one another, which when reading them all, I thought they were, but then with the Court of Owls arc, all 4 titles were linked together and used for the buildup, which in my opinion shouldn't be done

So, normally do the four titles carry four different stories (occasional crossing over for big stories), or do they all happen in the same universe and the same time and tell different parts of the same story?

I assumed that they were different storylines or at least different universes. For example, only Batman and Robin has Robin popping up in it, although Damian was shown in issue 1 of Batman, but then last month, as I said, all 4 crossed over for the Court of Owls story arc, although each was still written by it's usual writer and the art was by the usual artists, they just all linked in with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman storyline. I'd much prefer it if all 4 were kept seperate
