  1. Girls on the other hand seem to the same ridiculously tired plot reiterated to them over and over again. Of course this has varying degree's of success but more often than not they at best mediocre. Its just not fair on them.

Perhaps if women stopped fawning over pandering recycled shit like Mamma Mia and Bridget Jones then the studios would stop making it.
True but I sort of specifically mean girls rather than fully grown women. Women generally have limited amount of films but its much wider than that of the younger girls audience. The other thing is that departing from convention may actually be detrimental to profits for the older lady audience. The fact is every women who was in the cinema (which was sold out) with me when I saw Mamma Mia loved it. Where as the colossal lack of creativity for girls is astonishing. In fairness as you mentioned for women, it doesn't even have to be creative to have variety.

If you have nothing planned for a date with the missus and she suggest going to the cinema. Do your self a favour and steer her clear of this one. Other than the massively generic mixed message of act like a slapper but don't actually have sex because sex is bad story line, its just unfathomably uninteresting to watch. I don't sleep in films EVER but I actively thought about having a kip half way through this. When I came out I got a bit angry, not for my self but for the young girls this was targeted at. They seem to get the raw end of the stick when it comes to films time and again.

Sure when I was a kid we had bad movies aimed at boys but there were plenty of good ones and we weren't expected to just HAVE to like it because it was the only thing on offer. Look at Batman & Robin universally panned buy every kid and adult that's ever witness it. Girls on the other hand seem to the same ridiculously tired plot reiterated to them over and over again. Of course this has varying degree's of success but more often than not they at best mediocre. Its just not fair on them. I know I'm not the target audience but a good films a good film and they don't get many. I don't expect many of you to ever have the pleasure of watching this one but do your best to avoid.

  3. I really liked Hellboy 2 for the most part but the ending is bloody lazy.

Could you elaborate on your 'lazy'comment? I watched it last night, and although it took me a while to get into it (I was in a mood), I thought it was OK. I waited for the lazy ending but didn't quite understand what you meant. I thought it was obvious that was going to happen, but I wouldn't call it lazy.
SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

Well that's what I mean, it was FAR to obvious. Sort of like the lazy 'and he woke up from a dream' ending it was a cop out. I like the film and its very like the Hell Boy comic from what I have read but that's not entirely a compliment. It reeked of having seen it a million times before. Everything up until the ending I thought was quite good. The humour particularly was great and I couldn't love the tooth fairy scene any more. It was good fun disposable entertainment. The love interest between Abe and the princess wasn't nearly developed enough for me to believe he would destroy the world for her and yet it was so blatantly obvious what he was going to do and that she was going to kill her self to kill her brother. In a situation like that in a film I or any other member of the audience shouldn't be thinking 'well if your going to do it hurry up about will you', we should be emotionally involved with her sacrifice. So the reason I think it was lazy basically was because if your going to do a clich

  4. Flirting again eh , anyone else got an opinion ?

Green Street is one of the worst films ever made, whilst The Player is one of the best.
Worst film ever made is a stretch but it is crap. Its not even even the worst hooligan film ever made which has to be Rise of the Foot Soldier. I'd certainly be hard pressed to find what was 'pretty good' about it either way. I haven't seen the Player so I can't comment on that.
  5. You think films should be celebrated. This confuses me. All films should be celebrated? Is that really what you're saying? Just like any other form of art or entertainment, there's varying degrees of quality. Some films are truly wonderful, others are great, good, average, mediocre and flat out fucking terrible. Surely you agree with that? I didn't come in here and take a swipe. Someone said the movie was "FUCKING AMAZING" and yeah, I found it irritating as it was presented in such a manner that I was stunned there was no "nuff said" after it. I intend to repost my review from the other board at the end of this post, so please don't try and label me as some random bully kicking sand in the faces of the Batman fans, because I resent the implication.

Yeah sorry the celebrated line was quite vague. No I don't think that ALL films should be celebrated. But I mean film as a medium should be. When a good a film comes out, unnecessarily bating people by trying to marginalise how much they have enjoyed the experience with throw away one line derisions is the exact opposite of celebrating film as a medium. It shows little respect for the art form. Now your full articulate review I have no problem with, like I said I like reading your stuff it, it reminds me of when I debate films with couple of my friends. Now if this was the only time you had thrown out these one line derisions and weren't the type to fully intellectualise and articulate why disliked/like a film I probably wouldn't have mentioned it. But you are, so I did. In this instance I actually do think you come across as a bully kicking sand in there face because they are playing and having more fun than you. I'm not trying to imply that's who you ARE I'm saying that's how you come across when you post throw away lines like that.
  6. The Mist

I feel like I've just had my mind raped. Do your self a favour and don't go and see this badly acted, badly written, badly edited, badly CGI'd, Badly executed, badly conceived load of nonsense. I don't know why I thought this might be worth giving a crack, Stephen King adaptations rarely shine on the big screen but I thought considering it was written and directed by Frank Darabont, director of the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption. Two of the best King adaptations, It might be worth a shot (in fairness I'll go and see any old rubbish but I genuinely did think this might be worthwhile).

I'd love for someone to try and explain why it deserves 7.5 on the imdb. Frankly the only way I can conceive how it could have got the rating is if King and Darabont are the only two people who have voted for it. I could list what's wrong with it until the cows come home but it will just annoy me more. What really pisses me off is that underneath it somewhere there could have been a decent little horror film, trust me its hard to find.

  7. Unsuprisingly, Seven's wrong again. The Dark Knight deserves all the praise it gets.

Seven's not wrong he just sees thing differently. His post on the temp forum had loads of very valid criticisms, which if they were to annoy you would absolutely lower your enjoyment of the film.

Why is it amazing? It's full of holes and riddled with problems. It's a good film, nothing more.

I saw all those flaws of which you spoke and it made little to no difference to my enjoyment so in spite of them the film is in fact 'fucking awesome'. Surely if a film can included some of those clunking problems you mentioned and not make one bit of difference to the vast majority of its audience then it deserves every bit of the praise that it gets. Lets be honest as well your asking us to argue which why a film is simply 'good' rather than 'awesome'. Seems like an effort in futility to me. I feel that films should be celebrated, using one adjective to some up how a person feels about a film they liked over another is Tamato/Tomato. It serves little purpose maligning a film for no reason other than to antagonise people that did enjoy it. Your review on the other forum was a good read and will have led readers to draw there own conclusions and opinions from your thoughts. Your initial swipe at it in this thread was designed to do little more than unfairly attack the film. You probably would be better served reposting the original post over here than posting something that a great number of people will look at think you are being childish and spouting nonsense. Discussion and articulation is far more interesting than knee jerk sensationalism. Of course that can be applied exactly to the initial 'Fucking Awesome' statement Steveo2007 made but that wasn't intended to provoke nearly as much of a response.I'm not going to bother listing why I think the film is awesome because I'm sure they are all the reasons you think the film is good. Just assume that we like those things more than you and don't dislike the things you dislike about the film nearly as much. What I will say at the very base of why I think its awesome is simply its Batman done right.I really enjoy your posts when you fully articulate what you like and dislike about a film. I may not agree with some of your points and more than likely some of them won't effect my opinions and or enjoyment of a film. But I respect the fact you do have an opinion and enjoy agreeing or disagreeing with you as a reader. Its the one liners that make you come across like a elitist unarticulated film studies student more concerned about criticising a film than watching it.
  8. Here's another two words:Highly overrated.

Personally, I agree with "Fucking Amazing" as I watched it totally unbiased and thought it was one of the best films i'd ever seen. I didn't like Heath Ledger just cos he is dead, I didn't compare it to old Batman films or the comics, as i've not watched them in years and havn't read a single comic. It was just an amazing movie that gripped me from start to finish.
I think Seven is pointing out the list of things that he didn't like about the film and the fact that nobody else seems to acknowledge fault in it. Either that or he's trying to win the record for the fastest pissing on fireworks in history. I personally agree with you 'Fucking Amazing' is fine by me and describes more or less every reaction anyone I have spoken has had to the film.
  9. Mama Mia

If you don not like Abba or musicals then this obviously is not for you. That being said I have nothing against Abba and I'm quite partial to a musical. So I'm happy to say this ticked enough of the right boxes so I was happy enough. The wife laughed to the point of crying, as did the other near full crowd of women watching. So women obviously love it, from the male perspective the Comedy ranged from ropey to mediocre but was always charming.

The plot its self was as well thought through as it could possibly be if it were written on the back of a match box, but that's forgiveable because of the aforementioned charm of the comedy and a lot of the actors. Not to mention the inherent nostalgia of the Abba back catalogue in all its cheesy glory.

My real complaints come from three sources, the music production, the film production and my personal taste in musicals. Not the Abba but rather the sub par backing tracks that accompanied the Abba let the film down for me. It was a bit of annoyance when really the selling point of the film is that it lets you listen to all your 'favourite' classics in the structure of laugh riot comedy talkie. So not only were we treated to Pierce Brosnan's ahem singing but also a dodgy backing track which really aren't on a par with any Abba greatest hits CD.

The film production values aren't bad but they clearly don't have the kind of budget that older musicals sport and often I felt that the edit had to be constructed round what they managed to shoot. This leads to a great deal of out of synch lip sync and non linear montages in the sing songs which can feel very disjointed. In the first big song for the three male leads I found this particularly distracting. Like my action and martial arts scenes I like my musicals as linear as possible as I find that it really takes me out of the film and completely demolishes my suspension of disbelief. This doesn't happen in every musical scene but it iritates me none the less.

I like musicals quite a lot and I'm not ashamed to say it. That's probably because I like every other genre of film just as much. The thing is I like them a certain way. What it boils down to is I need big choreographed Dance routines in my musicals. Mama Mia does have its moments of dance but they are also a bit choppy and clearly were a bit of an afterthought. Obviously the casting of actors actually of the age that they are playing doesn't help the situation. I can understand 50+ actors such as Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski not being physically able to do huge routines but that's why in my opinion that's all roles should be played by unbelievably good looking healthy late 20 year olds.

Ok I may have over thought this one a bit and there are far worse films to take your missus too but ultimately there is little excuse to see it over The Dark Knight. Far better than Hairspray but far from the classic musical masterpiece it could have been.

  10. Is that a serious question? That Big Brother was 2 years ago, Shabazz has been wrestling at least 4 years. (only seen him once and that was in early 2004, and I thought he was very good in that match!)

eXedous however has blown goats every time I've seen him in person. I was there for aforementioned clip and honestly think that made him look good compared to how it was in person. When the 8 year olds in front of me keep talking about how he's clearly not hitting him you know there is a problem.

What show was it? What promotion?
That match was at the first NWA Wales show at the Burleigh academy in Newport.
  11. I've gota say I'm not surprised by Spuds entry. I don't agree with it but if there was one person I could see being put on this list, purely because of the polarised effect he seems to have, it would have been him. I can see why he gets stick but its more or less universally brought down to him being short and weedy which makes a bad wrestler it does not.eXodus however has blown goats every time I've seen him in person. 12. for those wanted to see edd ferris in action to understand why he has just taken up 2 minutes of your life by making a huge post/defencehttp://www.eddferris.com/video.htmli do agree we have the right to our opinions, but think we should wait until the list is finished at least and please i hate backyard no more acw links they make me cry inside

EDIT - I can see why it might be a good idea to wait but I thought as they were staggered it made sense to comment as and when they come out. Agreed about the ACW links, posting them just encourages people watch that rubbish. :D
  13. It's great how the people quoting Moj don't seem to have read the bit in one of Moj's first posts about the comments. They are all the reasons people gave for voting for said SHITARSE when they sent in their ballots. Now I don't dispute the fact that Moj has included just the ones he finds amusing, after all it is his game in the first place and he should be allowed to use whatever amuses him first and formost. So keep on defence leaping numpties.

Wooah there I'm not having a go at Moj. I just quoted from the original post. I think Moj is funny as hell most of the time. I know they aren't necessarily his views its just a case of copy and paste. Now as for the defence, what's wrong with it? Its a discussion forum after all. Seems a bit daft to just accept some things as fact when it is presented as such. But if you'd rather no one comments on any of them with anything but 'lol ~' then don't take part in a discussion thread. Its not like I came on and said 'U PRICK Y? U NO LIKE HIM?! is it. Just thought I would add my thoughts. Absolutely agree on some of the others from what I've seen though.
  14. ferris.jpg38 - "The Iceman" Edd Ferris

I've been thinking about this for a while and thought I'd point out a few things as there's more than a few half truths in that lot and I'm for the shitarse thread as much as the next guy because its funny as hell but as I actually know a bit about this and might as well make it as factual as possible shitarse.

Here's the thing about Edd Ferris. He started training to wrestle with Hammerlock at approximately the same time as Jonny Storm, Doug Williams and the like. The fact that most of you reading this are saying 'who?' speaks volumes. What speaks more volumes though is what is about to be said: Edd Ferris used to wrestle all over Wales, What speaks more volumes though is what is about to be said: Edd Ferris used to wrestle all over Wales, but got slowly dropped from everywhere for having less than no clue. If he was meant to go ten minutes, he'd go twenty. He'd grab the mike and cut unscripted promos.

Whilst he did start training back then he didn't wrestle even vaguely close to regularly until after he finished up at Uni which was about 3 years ago. When he started working fairly regularly 3 years ago he worked initially for Celtic Wrestling where the above incident occurred. He then left only Celtic Wrestling. The above sort of implies that he was blackballed from Wales entirely which is nonsense and it was one incident 3 years ago. I've spoken to Edd about the running over time myth before when I heard about the initial Celtic departure and this myth sprung up. He has only ever gone over time once and that was at a PPW show by 2 minutes because it was the guy he was working's first match. He has never and will never go long for any reason. Sure he's done matches longer than ten minutes but only because he was either supposed to or he wasn't given any sort of an indication that he shouldn't.Now on to the unscripted promos. This was the incident above at Celtic Wrestling. Now to put this in context, none of the promos back then at Celtic were scripted and all wrestlers would regularly get on the mics and cut promos to get themselves over. In one of aforementioned promos Edd said something that pissed off the company and thats where things went sour. Now he didn't swear or anything and wrestlers used to do that regularly there anyway. The reason I bring all that up is it was 1 time 3 YEARS ago! He doesn't act unprofessional on the mic and never has.

If he was going to lose, he'd dominate the entire match before losing in a flukey manner. Ferris has a legitimate martial arts background, which is fair enough, but that has given him the type of ego that means he will not be beaten on like a babyface should be.

I agree with this and I have spoken at length about it when he was working face. He worked far to much like a heel when he was a face and I told him as much. That being said when trying to get oneself over as well as put your opponent over it makes sense to look good before you get beaten. Its wrestling 101 and can be seen on WWE all the time. It doesn't mean that the other guy doesn't get over too especially in a good match. Now if he was told to go out there and get squashed in 5 seconds and in 3 moves, then decided he didn't want to and went into business for himself then I would agree it was well out of order. But he didn't and wouldn't.

When he's a heel, he has nothing bar a smirk - no crowd work, nothing, and he doesn't even give the babyface opportunities to come back before cutting him off, it's just fifteen minutes of beating with no reason to care.

This is the main reason I thought I'd post about this. Its possible that the heel of 3+ years ago version of Edd Ferris didn't work the crowd but it couldn't be further from the truth now. At the last Great British Wrestling show he was such an effective heel that a fully grown man jumped the guard rail and attacked him whilst the rest of the crowd went bat shit crazy for him to get his comeuppance. Frankly some of the most astonishing heel heat I've ever seen in person. Now the babyface come back bit I also think is daft. He's working heel now and he should dominate as long as he looks like a cowardly cheating heal in the process to get heat for the hope spots. Which is EXACTLY what they should be, hope spots. The Baby face shouldn't get in much so it brings the crowd up and down until its time for the finish. The statement is nearly a complete contradiction of the valid point about Edd when he works face.

Has to have simple insider terms (powder, among others) explained to him by wrestlers with much less experience. Does dangerous spots in battle royals for no reason. Argued passionately in favour of having a main event with just opening minute technical stuff. With Nick Aldis. No clue. None. Less than none. Negative clue Edd Ferris.

You have to learn words somewhere and if your not a net smark (which he isn't) the only way you are going to know wrestling vernacular is from other wrestlers. Not knowing some terminology is not the same as not knowing how to wrestle and frankly makes little difference. Edd has never hurt anyone ever in the ring and I'm struggling to think what kind of dangerous spots a technical wrestler would do.The main event in question as I understand it was simply Edd wanting to go one way with the match and Aldis wanting go the other. Nothing more nothing less. Edd wanted to do a technical match as he knew that after the quality big spot fest style match that Mike Bird and The Russian had it would be difficult to follow with a average Allstar style match. As it was the match was ok but the crowd weren't as into it as the aforementioned match. Nobody was really wrong in that situation if they had gone the technical route they may well have had the same reaction but may be they wouldn't have. Its hardly a reason why some one should be considered shitarse. Now in my opinion I don't think Edd deserves to be in the list. In fact I put him in my picks for the UKFF 50 because I think this year he has really stepped up his game and really developed as a performer. The fact that he has wrestled for more promotions up and down the country this year than any other reflects this. In Moj's first post about shitarse he points out that it is more than likely that people who hold grudges etc., more than likely have influence on the results. This is the only reason I can think of for him being on the list. As anyone that's seen him wrestle in the last year will tell you that he is far from the top 50 shitarse in the country. Now Edd may have pissed a few people off more than 3 years ago but that doesn't make him a nightmare to watch or even vaguely a bad wrestler. So, to me, like Robbie Brookside he is definitely not shitarse but that's just my opinion. The name on the other hand. I argued over that one with him for a while whilst he was thinking of changing from 'The Eliminator' my logic was that you need to build name recognition. Flip flopping the name for no reason IS shitarsery and I said as much but again that was over 3 years ago.
  15. A tremendous read Moj some true shitarsery. Just out of curiosity is there any chance we'll find out how many votes each shitarser got? It would be fun to know just how loathed some of these guys are. I can see why some would vote for Brookside but honestly think that more often than not he has better matches than most on a daily basis. His Allstar stuff I've seen has been tremendous he just doesn't fit into the more work rate heavy smarky style so well.

  16. Forbidden Kingdom

I went into this under the impression I was going to see a crap kids fantasy film and might get a short bit of Jet Li/Jackie Chan action. I'm happy to say I loved it. If you like traditional martial arts films, characters and fighting styles this is a great way to see them on the big screen. In the opening scene it worried me that all we would get is faux Hollywood wire fu but after the credits rolled it was reassuring that we were in the hands of a master, Yuen Woo Ping.

What's more for the rest of the film he was in top form. The fights were more often than not a tremendous blend of traditional fighting styles and wire work which was awesome. The plot is an amalgamation of different old Chinese folklore characters and settings which can be seen in countless old martial arts films, so as a fan it was quite awesome seeing so many of them in a big budget film like this (compared to there old budgets).

It has its floors, most notably the acting from the Chinese contingency when they are delivering English dialogue and various plot holes like the film implying that the American kid can understand Chinese as English because of the mystical staff but then characters talking behind his back in Cantonese when he's right in front of them.

Its a shame this film hasn't seemed to caught on over here because its great fun for all the family, as long as your family happens to like old Kung fu movies and great martial arts. If your a fan of this type of thing go and see it before its to late.

  17. The Shawshank Redemption is my favourite movie as well. I'm getting round to Southland Tales eventually. I don't hear many good things about it, but I'm determined to watch as many movies as possible, no matter what people say about them.On that note, I watched Creepshow and Baby's Day Out today. Creepshow was a real bag of wank. Baby's Day Out was great fun, even if it was a bit cartoony at times.

I thought Creepshow was a great little horror anthology. It drags a bit but there's lots of fun EC comics style fun to be had. plus Ted Danson and Leslie Neilson in teh same film! What's not to like? Having said that I thought baby's day out was really crap so maybe we are in fact each other's Bizzaro world versions when it comes to these particular film treasures.
  18. Everyone will love both of the films I have just reccomended.

I liked Next although the ending didn't make senseSPOILER - Highlight the black box to read
How in the fuck did he for see the entire event in the harbour then the Nuke going off if he could only see two minuts ahead? Not seen in the name of the king I'll give that a look and DEF I'm not really a fan of any particular genre or era as I've found that if it's a good film with a good plot and at least half decent acting, I'll enjoy it.Might give seventh seal a go.By the way is In the name of the King a movie from last year?
Yeah Seventh Seal's great. If you fancy a bit of Japanese action/drama/mysticism then you could do a lot worse than Aragami. Very few people I know have seen it but I thought it was a great little film. It was shot in a week I believe and has only 3 characters and 1 location. Great stuff from the Director of Versus and Azumi, Ryuhei Kitamura. As I seem to be recommending world cinema I might as well go on and list a few others well worth further investigation off the top of my head.JSA Joint Security Area - KoreanBreathless - FrenchThe Happiness of the Katakuris - JapaneseMan Bites Dog - FrenchCity of God - BrazilianOldBoy - KoreanOng Bak - ThaiWarrior King - Thaiand the aforementionedAragamiAzumiVersusSeventh SealIf you get through that lot any time soon you
  19. Anybody got any good recommendations for movies? I'm downloading a shit load of films and I want a few "unknown" greats, any ideas?

Any particular genre or era? I mean what do you like/dislike?Seventh Seal is tremendous for instance but I wouldn't want to recommend it with out know what you like.
