  1. Even better than both is the Porterhouse Oyster Stout sold in Porterhouse's own pubs round here. Tastes a bit saltier than the other stouts as you'd expect but very nice indeed.

Agreed, Oyster is a lovely drop. You are a lucky man to have pubs that have it on regular.

  2. The only reason The Wire didn't make my number one was that last series, which over-did the allegory bit and mis-used some characters. I found that a bit of a chore to finish. Whereas with Deadwood (my top pick) every episode is a priceless gem, and it's infinitely rewatchable.

I agree on the final season of The Wire, my quote mentions this, but for me it doesn

  3. Yes, nice work LaGoosh, I agree with KP on the pacing of the thread, I thought banging it out quickly worked.

The right show won as well, nothing touches The Wire. Well done UKFF. For those just starting it, you might wonder what the fuss is about after a couple of episodes but give it time and attention and you will be rewarded. I

  4. I facking lav a bit of Game Of Thrones, and it certainly would have crept into my top ten had I not forgot it completely. I think I was in the midst of a Luther feeding frenzy at the time. No other series in this list has compelled me to plough through 5 massive books in a genre I have never had much interest in. In fact, I probably view it more as a set of books now rather than the telly.

Breaking Bad is incredible. I wonder where it would be on this list had we done this after it

  5. I always mentally lump it in with NYPD Blues as well. But to be honest, I didn't care much for either at the time I watched them as a kid and although I would probably appreciate them more now as an adult I still don't care enough to check them out.

It's still a bit average Chest. I'd thoroughly recommend the David Simon book it's loosely based on though.

  6. Who voted for the Returned? Had no idea that anyone here had watched it, we should have a thread. Everyone I know irl is an imbecile so I haven't spoken to anyone about it.

    Moi.

I put it at 10, in retrospect maybe a bit hastily seeing as at the time of voting the first season hadn't finished, but I have to say I was pretty blown away by it.

  7. True Blood is good fun. Not anywhere near my own top ten but certainly much better than some of the rubbish we had earlier in thread. There are just too many shows about vampires these days though.

I have purchased Carnivale and Sparticus seasons 1 today as a direct result of this list.

  8. Top six will have The Wire, The Shield, Oz, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad in it. Struggling for a sixth, possibly Battlestar Galactica.

    Game of Thrones.

Is there a full list of "honourable mentions"? I don't want to have to trawl through the whole thread to look. I'm surprised not to see Six Feet Under get a place.

Ah of course. Forgot to put it in my top ten as well!

  9. Top six will have The Wire, The Shield, Oz, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad in it. Struggling for a sixth, possibly Battlestar Galactica. Never seen it but The Shield will be in the running to win I reckon.

Deadwood is amazing, top 5 from me. I always say if I somehow became a mega lottery winner I'd give the makers the cash to finish the project off.

  10. Yeah, I was a bit confused by the Jessie/ricin thing but ultimately it didn't take away from what was an amazing episode, one of the best in it's history.

4 amazing scenes. The Mexican restaurant, Hank and Marie watching Walt's fantastic confession tape with Hank realising his treatment was paid for with drug money, Walt and Jessie meeting in the desert which could have gone so many ways and finally Jessie snapping. Wonderful, wonderful telly.

  11. Agree with a lot of those comments about Lost. I was one of those viewers that bought into the hype before the show kicked off, watched the first episode and never looked back. By the time the fourth series rolled around I pretty much hated myself for not being able to pull myself away from it, despite thinking that the show had gone to shit by that point. I still watched religiously. Ultimately, for every criticism that could be leveled at the show (and there were so many), I cannot deny that I absolutely loved the shit out of the ride. The ending left me so pissed off though, and that's not a good thing. I didn't submit a list, but if I had I would have struggled to have placed it high on my list.

With my man Arch Stanton on Lost. The last season and particularly the last few episodes were so embarrassingly bad it ruined some fantastic telly that preceded it. I had so much faith that it would be a fantastic, mind blowing finish..I'm still hugely bitter at how it finally played out. If I could go onto that fucking island and turn that stupid fucking wheel in the ground and go back into time, I'd probably not bother watching it.

  12. I saw someone had Boy's From The Black Stuff at number one and, after I'd read the following posts, was going to ask if it was Frankie. Thanks for saving me the bother.

Me too! Had it in my top ten but never expected it to make the final list. Great show, full of heart.

  13. Yeah, agree with a lot of what has been said about the Walking Dead, terrific pilot episode but quickly went downhill into a slurry of poor dialogue, badly realised characters and frustrating plot. Gave up after the first season but found myself watching season 3 this year which seemed a bit of an improvement, although hardly must see TV. There was that great episode when they came across the black guy from the pilot, but the finale and episodes leading up to it sort of fizzled out. I
