  1. I've had trouble sleeping past couple of days and after running out of House and Community episodes on my hard drive I decided to watch a few films I'd been meaning to get around to:

    Wishmaster

Really good fun for what it is. A typical 80s style gimmicky horror very much in the same vain of Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm Street. The only problem is it was made in 1997. A decade earlier and this film would have been a lot more popular I imagine. Still, as mentioned, it's a fun concept.

    Wishmaster 2

A huge waste. I know a lot of people hate the never-ending run of sequels that a lot of horror series have but I've got a huge soft spot for most of them. I guess I'm just easy to please but even with that I found this to be pretty awful. It offers so many potentially good set-ups and just pisses them away. And I know it's hard to talk logic about a film where an evil Djinn is unleashed from an enchanted stone but this just follows the one of the worst conventions of horror sequels by ignoring a lot of the rules established in the original.

    The Incredibles

I wasn't a huge fan of this the first time I saw it. I like it more now but I think there are a lot of flaws still. It takes a long while to really get going and as a result the middle of the film feels very rushed. Then there are the annoying characters that I guess are to be expected once in a while from Pixar (I found Edna and Dash to be largely intolerable). I also thought the gag ratio was much lower for this compared to Pixar's other efforts. Even Monsters Inc, which I also found a bit disappointing, felt like it had more going on. However, most of the characters are really fantastic (particularly Elasti-girl, pun partly intended) and it's such a cool concept that I'd certainly be interested in a sequel, which I hear is the plan at the moment?

  2. I finally got round to watching Australian horror The Loved Ones after seeing it hyped by a few posters on here. Definitely one of the best horrors I've seen in recent years, and one of very few films where I wanted to see more due to being good as opposed to unfulfilling. Brilliant stuff.

Good man, more people need to see this. One of the most entertaining and original horror attempts in years, and I'd argue the best since The Descent...maybe not quite AS good as that though. The Descent is fucking great.

  3. I saw Thor also and really enjoyed it. It's not without its flaws and I thought the 3D was pretty rubbish overall but I really liked Chris Hemsworth's performance and how the Thor character was presented in general. What I enjoyed more though, and what really ups the quality of the film, is Tom Hiddleston as Loki. The character and the performance were absolutely superb.

Also that secret end credits scene is easily the best one they've done so far. LOKI IN AVENGERS!

  4. Just watched Asylum and enjoyed it a lot. It hasn't aged anywhere near as badly as you might expect and you can't help but get swept up in the plot. The basics of it is, a psychiatrist trying out for a new position at this asylum for the "incurably insane" is given a test in order to get the job; to decide which of the four patients he visits are actually the recently committed Dr. Star, who lost his mind a few days prior and attempted to kill one of his colleagues. It did suffer from the curse of me guessing the ending long before it happened but there was still enough there to keep me interested. The final shot is brilliant too. It left me with a big smirk on my face with it's little nod toward the fourth wall. Highly recommended. I think I'll finish the night off with some Yank horror maybe. I'm thinking Hatchet.

I love that film. My Dad taped in on ITV "Night Time" when I was about 9 and let me watch it. It shit me up big time and I was afraid to go to bed. Having seen it a few times since it's got better every time.

I really need to pick it up on DVD though.

It's quite hard to get hold of actually. I got the US import for about

  6. Dreamcatcher just finished on ITV and it was pretty good in a really weird way.. odd film for sure.. but Morgan Freeman AND Jason Lee in the same film, figured it was worth a look..

Dreamcatcher is the most awful pile of shit I've ever had the misfortune of sitting through. Say what you want about Twilight's horrendous existence and pointless sequels like Dumb And Dumberer and Meet The Fockers, Dreamcatcher manages to actually show SOME level of promise at first before becoming a ridiculous, convoluted, mess of a film. Fuck Dreamcatcher, Stephen King, Morgan Freeman, Jason Lee and anything vaguely related to that atrocity.

  7. Scream 4

I will put all of this in spoiler tags as it's one of those movies that you should go into with as little revealed as possible. I'll just say that everyone who is a fan of the series who may be skeptical really should see it. If you need that extra bit of motivation then feel free to read on. I'll avoid spoiling the ending at least but still, read at your peril...

SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

Firstly, if you're not a fan of the whole "meta" thing, you're going to fucking hate this. This Scream in particular is very much a pretentious film geek's movie. I'm sure there are some who could enjoy it otherwise but overall I wouldn't bother if that doesn't sound like the direction you want this film to take.

The horror in this one is underplayed quite a bit for a lot of comedic references and genuine parodies, not like the Scary Movie fart jokes and lowest common denominator shit. The mystery keeps you guessing and it does have quite a shocker ending that manages to make sense, particularly if you were following the development of the film online. Lots of fun characters, although some do suffer from being under-developed. The writing is solid for the most part but I won't lie that it's not without its flaws and there are moments that might make you cringe.

The acting performances are endearing enough, although Neve Campbell hasn't evolved from much more than that constant look of "I'm about to cry". She doesn't look like she's aged a day though and if you're a fan, like me, then it won't bother you too much. She's still got "it"

So yeah this is rambling and not a review as such but just something that will give those of you a vague idea of what to expect when heading to see this. To simplify it, Scream 4 is way better than Scream 3 (which really isn't too hard I guess) but not as good as Scream 2 nor the original film. However it doesn't fall too far below the second and there's plenty in there to keep a fan of the series interested and thoroughly entertained. If you're a sucker for horror, particularly Yank horror, then you'll fucking love it.

That is if you can get over some of the more obnoxious "meta" stuff in it...

So there we are. Not exactly a review as such but just an explanation enough for what to expect for those who may not be 100% sold on the idea. I still strongly recommend to anyone heading to see it to avoid reading up on it for now. It's going to be spoiler central.

  8. Christ. Anyone who cares that much about looking popular on an internet forum should be preemptively placed on the sex offenders register to save time.

Doesn't this forum actually have a couple of people who genuinely belong on such a list? In fact, I think one has been banned, but you catch my drift.

    Watch'u talkin' 'bout David?

  9. What does everyone think of last years Elm remake? Having only seen the original movies when I was about 11 at a mates house and being shit scared I quite liked it, the way the back story was told was quite lame and unimaginative but for me most part is was quite a good, polished horror film, which is how I like em.

I haven't seen it but from the trailer it appeared to fail on the most basic level of an Elm Street remake in that the effects actually looked even more dated than the original.

  10. Currently working my way through all the Nightmare on Elm Street films followed by all the Friday 13th film. Been 9 years since i watched them all one after another for my dissertation so have forgotten how bad some of them are. First Nightmare film still holds up quite well. Some of the effects still look great ( Both scenes with the rotating room are amazing and Freddy streaching through the wall pisses all over the CGI version in the remake.) There are some effects that just look shit now but thats to be expected and Freddy is a lot more of a bumbling twat than I remember him being.

Watched A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2 last night and it is just shit. Freddy has about 10 minutes of screen time. The whole film has the most blatent gay subtext of all time which apparently no one picked up on at the time and theres a scene where a parrot explodes for no reason(possibly through gayness, im unsure). Dream Warriors tonight which is the first film when they start pushing the comedy into the franchise

Dream Warriors is by far the best of the series. They managed to get the balance down between the comedy and the horror with that one and it's aged far better than the original. I mean it looks dated, sure, but it's in that endearing 80s way where you can have a chuckle at it.

It really does go downhill from there for most, however I have a major soft spot for horrors whether they be good or bad (or even bad-good). It's just so hard to make a horror that's just flat out not entertaining. Even the awful ones are usually hysterical to sit through. Although in recent years they have managed to prove me wrong a bit and create some that are just incredibly dull (The Grudge) and/or irritating (Saw 3).

I honestly don't understand lightningxlock's hatred of the Friday 13th series above. I think that it's pretty strong overall and is a good example of my point above in that even the poorer entries in the series are hilariously entertaining to watch. Except Jason Goes To Hell obviously, that was just fucking terrible.

If anyone wants to watch any modern horrors that are actually pretty good then you can't go wrong with The Descent, High Tension/Switchblade Romance (may want to just skip the end though), The Loved Ones and the Dawn of the Dead remake (aka Zack Snyder's only good film).

  11. V for Vendetta - Gets better with every watch. Didn't really enjoy it first time out coz I was a huge fan of Big Ally Moo-Moo's work, but now I genuinely think it's better than the GN.

The Kings Speech - It was...well...it was stinking, and I didn't enjoy one minute of it. I don't know why Colin Firth was nominated for sounding like a pompous Simple Jack. The missus loved it though...

v For Vendetta is one of the worst movies ever made. It's in there with X Men 3 and Alien Vs Predator as the biggest missed opportunities in cinema history. It is absolutely unbelievably appalling in every concievable way. It's pretentious, poorly acted, poorly directed...it's a big fucking lump of shit.

While I wouldn't go THAT far, I agree that V For Vendetta is very poor. The graphic novel is one of my favorites and I just thought the film missed so much of the story that would've worked perfectly in the film. It sucks because I love the majority of the cast but I just couldn't get into the film.

  12. Didn't even manage to get my choices in for that as it fell off the front page so quickly I just forgot.

We must be using different forum views then because it's been on the front page of Off Topic for the last two weeks for me!

I should point out that I'm quite happy with the thread not being pinned, but I'm touched that Gladstone would offer his 67p. He's a heartwarming fellow.

That may well be the case. It was disappointing none the less.

Still, look forward to the list.

  13. Why would I suspend you for no reason?

I'd say Gladstone would argue that one. There hasn't been a solid reason given as far as justifying that his was a fair suspension yet, since you yourself seemed to take it as banter in the thread he was apparently banned for. Butch's week suspension was harsh as well, considering he got suspended for "posting a picture of someone's girlfriend". Even though he didnt.

neil posted about Gladstone yesterday. Butch and TripleA got a cooling off period for being arses to each other and crossing the line.

What's amazing about this place is that people are always sending in reports bitching about this and that, most of it frivolous, and then when a mod acts on it, they are a cock. We can't win. Fortunately, we have pretty thick skin.

That's just not true though really is it? You're one of the easiest people to bait on the entire forum rick. You reply to all the negative posts about you with a "I don't have to explain my actions" comment before usually following with an explanation for your actions, albeit a poor one. It's quite clear what's happened with Gladstone in that he made you look the fool and you suspended him. Fairplay to you, you're a mod and I'm pretty sure it is against the rules to insult a moderator or whatever, but at least have the balls to admit to doing it.

From what I hear also, the "argument" or whatever was taken in a jokey way. It seems like it was just a bit of banter. Can you not handle a bit of banter rick? That doesn't sound like the actions of a guy with "pretty thick skin".

  14. You know what's really sad? You were a really good poster and mod right up till the time you got the admin rights. I was really happy when Moo passed the torch as it were, as I thought you were the perfect choice.

But since then you've developed a "them and us" mentality that's really spoilt the fun around here at times, and this place is just meant to be a bit of fun.

It's an almost perfect analogy of the Stanford Prison Experiment in fact, where they took a group and randomly divided them into prisoners and guards. Those assigned as guards quickly developed harsh authoritarian attitudes to the "prisoners" to the extent that they physically abused them.

The irony is, that you've ended up making the UKFF experience less pleasant for yourself more than anyone. I just come on here to talk shit about wrestling and debate issues of the day, muck around generally, and in the process have met plenty of like-minded and solid individuals. You seem to spend your days trying to think of pithy one-liners before closing a thread you don't like.

Factions feuding on wrestling forums are as natural and night and day, but I don't think you're enjoying it as much as we are....

Seriously fucking laughing at this post. The levels of paranoia, hypocrisy, and the fact that you actually included a wikipedia link are just too much. Please tell me it was parody.

I can give an abridged version if you want?

    You're a grade A cunt.

  15. Saw Black Swan last night, it was very good. The final scenes and performance were excellent. I dont think its a great or anything but a very good film. I didnt think much of the body horror side of things but it was a good story mirroring that of the character she was playing and was very enjoyable. I still find it uncomfrtable sitting in a packed cinema during a sex scene though. :(

Don't worry, they're not hurting each other.
