  1. Shutter Island

I'm not a particularly big Martin Scorsese fan and I baulk at his "greatest living director" tag. Frankly I think he's incredibly overrated and any of his signatures aren't all that impressive. This film could have been directed by anybody. It's not poorly directed, it just doesn't have the feeling of a particular auteur, let alone one as acclaimed as Scorsese. Ultimately Shutter Island is a decent slice of film noir cum B-movie chiller, but it's not going to change your life.

Looking forward to Shutter Island - hoping to see it today and fair enough with overrated comment about Scorsese.

Does that mean you thought the following werent as good as they're made out? As in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy, Colour of Money, Goodfellas and Casino?

I do feel that the quality of his work has diminished with Aviator, Departed etc but his earlier stuff is still iconic.

  2. Had a ridiculous dry spell of movie watching, but since Sunday morning, have watched:

    [just the end of] Pochahontas

    Space Buddies

    Hunchback of Notre Dame

    Snow White

    Wall-E

    Spirited Away

    Howl's Moving Castle

    Kiki's Delivery Service

May I recommend "Whisper of the Heart" - it's my favourite Studio Gibli title ever. It's not as well renowned as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke or Totoro which is a crime itself but I rate it above all those.

  3. Can I quickly recommend Blood and Bone staring Michael Jai White on DVD - it's a MMA/street fighting type movie with amazing action choreography and memorable characters. Had no expectations about this and in my opinion this is one of the best movies of last year.

Also I defy anyone to find a more badass supercool villian than the one in this movie.:thumbsup:

Jai White's other movie, Black Dynamite is also out in a few weeks and I wholeheartedly recommend that as well.
